memoHi @roji.abraham. STEEM blockchain is recovering a hostile takeover. Details: https://cointelegraph.com/news/steem-community-stands-its-ground-amid-tron-takeover. Community is fighting back to put community witnesses back to the top20. I see you have free witness vote slots, please vote for our community witnesses. https://steemd.com/witnesses page highlights sockpuppet witnesses, we should ignore them and push the human witnesses in top50. body![74411236_10156689629802546_571249543929135104_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmT6vv5Wv9gtHY55ZRhjQ7gXKstRK6gonG4xQJERUZ3qbQ/74411236_10156689629802546_571249543929135104_n.jpg) I held Louie close and rubbed his head to console him. His heart was thumping hard and fast and the fear was evident in his eyes. His ears down and tail flat on the ground when I picked him up. Earlier with every loud burst he sprinted to under the nearest couch or what he with his little kitten brain thought was the safest place for him to be. The night before, he had peed in 4 different places out of fear. Louie never pees outside his litter box โ€“ unless heโ€™s immensely distressed. Louieโ€™s not just a 4-month-old kitten for us though weโ€™ve had him for just a couple of months. That little furball is often the fulcrum of our emotional stability โ€“ even at times when itโ€™s not evident to others around. When my wife breaks down and cries in the middle of the night, Louie would come close, lick her forehead, place his front paw on her face, and then would lie down next to us, he canโ€™t speak (in fact he hardly mutters a sound even when in pain โ€“ we sadly feel heโ€™s got a vocal disability because of which he canโ€™t mew like other kittens), and yet he gives us a feeling that he understands โ€“ heโ€™s been our emotional support even when our โ€˜humanโ€™ family wasnโ€™t around. They said cats donโ€™t sense emotions or never get attached to people โ€“ I believed them of course - I preferred dogs too for that reason. They were so wrong. Louie was the living proof of that for us. Iโ€™ve seen people make fun of those who keep pets - they just donโ€™t realise that for โ€˜hoomansโ€™, those four-legged creatures arenโ€™t just animals โ€“ they are family. There is a parental investment in raising them and today we ourselves realise how much of a bond we can, as humans, share with a โ€˜catโ€™ (or a dog). Perhaps thatโ€™s why people these days who keep them close are called โ€˜pet parentsโ€™ and not โ€˜ownersโ€™ as they were once called. Right now, Louie needs our support so we take turns and hold him and keep him close to us till the loud crackers outside stop. Heโ€™s confused and scared and looks at us as if to ask why? We just rub his head; wish we couldโ€™ve explained. No point criticising them โ€“ itโ€™s a festival after all. And besides, you donโ€™t want to criticise anybody anymore โ€“ lest you be seen as oppressors of religious freedom (hey, if they can do it, so can we). Itโ€™s nothing to do with religion I want to tell them โ€“ those family members of ours who have tails just donโ€™t distinguish religion or occasion โ€“ all they know is that those loud noises scare them โ€“ a lot. Louieโ€™s gone to sleep now โ€“ right next to us because the noises have come down. An unusually loud burst startles him, but then heโ€™s reassured weโ€™re around now and calms down. Tomorrow he should be back to being himself, and should forget what happened. Iโ€™m sure he wonโ€™t hold a grudge against us for his distress. Heโ€™s not human to hold a grudge.

Of course, there is the occasional frog-in-the-well who staunchly believes oneโ€™s own life experiences will be better than what is taught in any book (Iโ€™ve actually met a few whoโ€™ve made remarks akin to this and without surprise, they were among the most unremarkable people I have come across). What such people unfortunately donโ€™t realise is that in our really short lives, we simply do not have the time to experience and learn enough on our own and books teach us perspectives and experiences of others that would otherwise never have found their way to us. Remember the saying, 'Only a fool learns from his own mistakes; the wise man learns from the mistakes of others'? # Leaders Read.
Great leaders have always been readers. The best of the CEOs and thought leaders today still make time in their busy schedules to read and constantly learn โ€“ and in fact, it would be one of those key attributes of theirs that actually made them reach the lofty heights they did in the first place. Bill Gates has said that he reads an average of 50 books a year. Barrack Obama is an avid reader who once remarked, โ€œReading is important. If you know how to read then the whole world opens up to you.โ€ Jeff Bezos, yet another voracious reader, had revealed in an interview how he often recommended books to his senior executives (I got to know these books were: The Effective Executive by Peter Drucker, The Innovatorโ€™s Solution by Clayton Christensen and The Goal by Eliyahu Goldratt) and Apple CEO, Tim Cook, is known to regularly gift copies of one of his favourite management books to his colleagues. Great leaders being readers is not a recent phenomenon. Napoleon Bonaparte, who lived over 200 years ago, had a personal librarian and was said to have carried his personal library wherever he travelled (now imagine the inconvenience of doing that when youโ€™re busy waging wars). He had once said, โ€œShow me a family of readers, and I will show you the people who move the world.โ€ Explaining the joys of reading to a person who doesnโ€™t read is probably similar to explaining how vision is to a person who was born blind. It has to be experienced to be understood. So, if you are somebody trudging up the stairs of leadership, are you sold on the need to read yet? # It changed my Life tooโ€ฆ
I picked up reading really young and it was when I turned 11 that an incident (that put me in bed for months) really cemented this habit in me (I wrote about this in a blog post 8 years ago). 27 years since then, I have consumed books in hundreds and while my tastes have changed over the years (I read mostly non-fiction these days), the habit of reading has become a part of my very nature. Reading, undoubtedly, has helped me in every facet of my life โ€“ it helped me improve my my vocabulary and my comprehension ability during my school days, it helped me uncover my creative side (which I leveraged later as a writer), and it was also responsible for helping me build relationships with people (thank you, Dale Carnegie). The knowledge I gained from reading even played an instrumental role in helping me successfully lead my first team 10 years ago (thank you Jack Welch for writing 'Winning' and especially for that chapter on candor). Take out all the books I read from my life, and I know I would have turned out a much poorer man โ€“ figuratively, and in all probability, literally too. # Want to read but just canโ€™t find the time?
I have often heard the laments of my colleagues or friends who say they really want to start reading but simply are not able to find the time to do so. And living in a city like Bangalore, thatโ€™s perfectly understandable โ€“ the average corporate employee (doesnโ€™t matter the grade or designation) spends 2 hours in commuting to and from office (amidst the cacophony of the gazillion vehicles blaring their horns to glory), in addition to spending 9 or 10 hours in office itself. At the end of his/her work day, the said person has barely 12 hours to eat, sleep and attend to all his/her personal chores (and family matters) before starting all over. So where could he/she make time for reading? A while ago, this was my precise dilemma โ€“ after starting a new job, I was off for work every morning at 7.30 am and returned tired around 7.00 pm. And since I catered to customers in different time zones, it was not uncommon to see the odd email or two that I had to reply to even after that. I was barely finding time to do a brisk run or walk 3-4 times a week, so where was I going to find time to read? Back then, the only time I found at first was about 20 minutes before I went to bed. But then I discovered something that resulted in me making more time for books and eventually it led to me completing about 24 books in 2018 alone (despite my office schedule). That something was - audiobooks. # Audiobooks to the rescue!
Listening to audiobooks isnโ€™t technically reading, but nevertheless, it is still the equivalent of reading a book โ€“ audiobooks are a godsend to people like me. I started listening to audiobooks only last year and realised how effective (and useful) they were for somebody with a schedule like mine. Once I latched to the idea of audiobooks, I started downloading and listening to them on my phone while on my way to office and back. Before I knew it, that part of the day I hated the most โ€“ the time spent in commuting between office and home โ€“ turned out to be my favourite part of the day. So irrespective of whether I chugged to office slowly on the side of the road on my motorcycle or hitched a ride in somebodyโ€™s car using โ€˜Quickrideโ€™ (the ride sharing app), I would be plugged in and busy listening to Neil de Grasse Tysonโ€™s Astrophysics for people in hurry, or Simon Sinekโ€™s โ€˜Leaders eat Lastโ€™, or Noah Harari's 'Homo Deus', or some of the popular podcasts I had downloaded earlier (Tony Robbinsโ€™ Unshakeable is one of the best ones I heard last year). I stopped complaining about Bangaloreโ€™s unruly traffic too (and that's an achievement in itself), because, hey, when you are busy enjoying the ride to office and back, whoโ€™s got time for getting mad at the crazy people on the road? # In Summary... and Recommendations.
Audiobooks have been around for a while but like any great idea, it is taking its own sweet time to catch on (remember the time when eBooks and Kindle were almost unheard of?). However, companies are realising the potential in audiobooks and Amazon has now come out with their audiobook platform called **[Audible](https://amzn.to/2FwJfYL)** which they are promoting extensively. So, it might just be a matter of time before itโ€™s as common as, say, digital books. While I used different phone apps for audiobooks at first (even tried audiobooks in mp3 formats which were cumbersome), I finally moved on to Amazonโ€™s Audible (thanks to a free trial they had offered). Now, after having used Audible for over 3 months, I am completely hooked on it because it's user friendly, has a great collection of audiobooks, and is affordable (at least for a basic subscription that gives you 1 credit a month). PS: If you donโ€™t have an Audible account, **[click here](https://amzn.to/2FwJfYL)** and join now for a free 1 month trial (you also get free credits to download a couple of complimentary audiobooks). Give it a try, and if youโ€™re just not using it enough, you can cancel before the subscription kicks in and still keep the free audiobooks to listen to as long as you want. Since Iโ€™m writing this blog post on a professional networking platform, let me give you my picks of two great books every leader-in-waiting must read (both are available as audiobooks in **[Audible](https://amzn.to/2FwJfYL)** and are part of my library too). 1. **[Simon Sinekโ€™s Leaders Eat Last](https://amzn.to/2II8DNr)** -> One of the best books on leadership Iโ€™ve read on leadership - extremely insightful as well as engaging. 2. **[Dale Carnegieโ€™s How to Win Friends and Influence People](https://amzn.to/2NbMU4s)** -> Strictly not a book on leadership but on relationship building; this is an all-time classic that no leader should miss reading. So thatโ€™s it! Reading is that one habit that's common to all successful leaders and if youโ€™re one of those people, whoโ€™ve always had regrets about not having time to read, this is your chance to make amends. Using audiobooks you could adopt that habit in a way few people even think of today! Start listening to audiobooks, make the best of those long frustrating commute to work, and most importantly start experiencing the joy and contentment of learning from a great book, even if have never been a regular reader! > โ€œToday a reader, tomorrow a leader.โ€ โ€“ Margaret Fuller **Note: This blog post has also been featured as a [Linkedin Post](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/one-common-habit-successful-leaders-how-you-could-adopt-roji-abraham/) by the author.**

bodyVery inspiring article.... I am actually in my mid 20s and thinking of switching my career paths. Not only am I terrified of the thought that I may not achieve desired success in my new venture but also worry that the experience I have gained in my current role will amount to nothing further in my career. body Dear Friend, I understand what you are going through is hard but come to think about it. As working-class middle-aged office-goers, it is unlikely that we will get an opportunity like what we have today, while still in reasonably good health, to take that much needed break - a break that is completely free from office obligations, without us having to worry about deadlines, emails or escalations. If we look back on the many years from the time we started working as young graduates, how many times did we take a time out for living an experience that we could cherish for the rest of our life? Even those rare vacation breaks we had had been plagued with office phone calls and we've rarely been a day away from our office emails. When we were working our full-time jobs, we couldnโ€™t wait for the day to end and heave a sigh of relief and when we were between jobs, we were frantically searching to get into one - applying to any and every mediocre company that could take us in - because we are scared of the bills that would pile up otherwise. We let the best years of our twenties slip away trying to build a career with perhaps just a few stolen weekend hours to enjoy a beer or a game on TV. We let most of our thirties slide away while still running the endless corporate rat race - our stakes were now raised because we started our own families for whom we became the primary breadwinners. And we know that in all probability, when we slither into our forties, weโ€™ll still be slaving away โ€“ after all, weโ€™re up the hierarchy now and it is very competitive on the top! All through these years, we stifled our creativity and opinion and put up with bad bosses, mediocre colleagues, and office politics thinking about the bigger picture โ€“ the one-line statement in our bank account that said โ€“ โ€˜salary creditedโ€™ โ€“ because there were rent or bills to be paid, tuition fees for children and whatnot. Caught in the trivialities of everyday life that we forgot to actually live one. And in the end, we'll probably say, we did it all for our children - an excuse we console ourselves with and one that most probably our children will tell theirs one generation down the road. For most of us, that life and perspective changing backpacking journey or road trip that we promised ourselves never happened and may never will. That great novel we wanted to write, will remain words lost in our heads. For the musicians among us, the songs we wrote and performed to little crowds of people years ago, are already fading from memory and probably will never be sung or heard again. Every little talent we nourished in our youth more often than not die a slow death. And one day we will wake up, stare at our 65-year-old faces in the mirror, feel the pain of our aching arthritic backs, and will be wondering how life passed us by. Some of us will be grandparents living off our meagre savings or on the goodwill of our children, and others might still be working to still make ends meet. All we can know for certain is that we'll reach old age eventually unless of course we die young. It is said that one the greatest regret of those on their deathbed is that they wished they hadn't worked too hard. The religious ones among us will of course pray - we'll get a chance again in our after-lives they will say. Today, we really need to look at ourselves and think about where we stand - despite all the effort we put in, all the years of our lives we gave that we'll never get back, we are faced with the uncertainty of unemployment today without having much of idea of what lies ahead. Or if we look at it differently, maybe it's just life giving us one more chance to try shooting that hoop we missed - to do the things we couldn't or have been putting away for years, to experience life far moved from that dog-eat-dog world, to hone those long forgotten little talents, or to try something different for a while. Tomorrow, we may probably start working for another corporate, living from pay-check to pay-check, in exchange for the remaining good years of our lives, and we'll be so busy with it that we'll probably not have time to give life another thought - maybe till we're in the same situation again - or worse - far older, without the luxury our youth (or whatever is left of it) even. Letโ€™s not fool ourselves, despite all our years in a corporate, not all of us will become CEOs (and not everyone wishes to be) - most of us will remain just loyal foot soldiers - useful till we get old and leave on our own or are replaced by younger more enthusiastic pawns. Today we are at that idiomatic โ€˜crossroadโ€™ of our lives. Without a job, we probably donโ€™t have enough money in the bank that weโ€™re comfortable with, and we may have apprehensions about what we do next โ€“ take time out or jump into a job immediately as soon as the opportunity lands or try something different? Perhaps you may have a different view, but I know I want to do something that I can proudly look back on when Iโ€™m old and tell myself โ€“ despite all the shit that life threw at me, it did give me that one unexpected chance, and I took it โ€“ for better or worse, and I am glad that I did. After all, a job is something thatโ€™s certain to come along sooner or later, but life โ€“ thatโ€™s something that happens just onceโ€ฆ
With Warm Regards,

Your Good Old Office Friendโ€ฆ
Note: Also published on the author's blog at https://sixstringsforsupper.wordpress.com
