There will be further simple and obvious truths pointed out in this article, but let&#x27;s start with that one. </p>\n<p>We are living in a time where if you say that A is true, but B is ALSO true, then somehow you are denying or minimizing the seriousness or veracity of truth A.  </p>\n<p>The George Floyd case has been a recent flashpoint and the impact of that terrible event is ongoing, and I believe that we still haven&#x27;t reached the summit of the protests.  However, this is a good example of where multiple things can be true at the same time.</p>\n<p>Let&#x27;s go through a few of them, shall we?</p>\n<p>What happened to George Floyd was heinous.  It was more than just murder.  It was almost 9 minutes of torture which led to his murder.  Derek Chauvin, the scumbag police officer that took George Floyd&#x27;s life should go to prison for the rest of his life.  True.</p>\n<p>The protests which followed were unsurprising and necessary.  The peaceful protests across America and in cities around the world were good to see.  I will defend the right of anyone to protest publicly because that freedom is what our Western society is based on.  </p>\n<p>BUT</p>\n<p>What is also true is that those that used the George Floyd murder and the subsequent, legitimate anger surrounding it to riot, to loot, to destroy, while invoking the name of George Floyd was disgusting.  In many cases, these rioters - I will not use the word protestors to describe them - were nothing more than extremists from groups such as Antifa looking to use this terrible event as a way to push their agenda by causing as much havoc as possible.</p>\n<p>Two things can be true at the same time.</p>\n<p><img src=\"http://scottygee.com/riots.jpg\"/></p>\n<p>How about another one?</p>\n<p>I am fully behind the statement Black Lives Matter.  Of course.  There is no reasonable person that would disagree with the statement.  There is also no reasonable person that would disagree with the fact that there are many black communities in America (and indeed in Canada) where the people that live there are behind the 8-ball from the start in terms of opportunity.  I&#x27;m not smart enough to know what the solutions are, but I do know that our leaders must find a way to help these communities lift themselves up so that as a group they have the same access to opportunity and prosperity that the rest of us have.</p>\n<p>BUT</p>\n<p>Black Lives Matter, the organization, has time and time again supported BDA (\rBoycott, Divest, and Sanction) Israel, which accuses Israel of genocide against Palestinians as well as labeling Israel an &quot;apartheid state&quot;.</p>\n<p>Why Black Lives Matter is involving themselves and backing an organization and a cause which has nothing to do with their own struggle and mission statement defies explanation.  Furthermore, their calls to Defund the Police are shortsighted and was bring nothing but further misery to their communities.</p>\n<p>So, while I can back the STATEMENT and the HUMAN SENTIMENT behind Black Lives Matter, I will not back the ORGANIZATION.</p>\n<p>Two things can be true at the same time.  \r<br/><br/>Want more?  Building on what I stated earlier.</p>\n<p>Policing in America (and again, in Canada as well) must change.  There must be massive reforms to the way that police officers are hired, trained, evaluated, and disciplined.</p>\n<p>The training must be much more rigorous.  To become a Navy Seal you must go through over a year of formal training.  Police officers in Minneapolis undergo 16 weeks of training and then further field experience and training.   I believe police officers should undergo at least a year of training as well as rigorous psychological evaluation before they are even allowed to interact with the public.  They should be trained in as many different scenarios as possible and re-evaluated on a yearly basis.</p>\n<p>The police should also be &quot;de-militarized&quot;.  Police forces do not need the level of military-style equipment and weaponry that they have with the exception of very specialized units in a very limited capacity.  Seeing armoured personnel vehicles rolling down the street and heavily armed police pouring out of it does nothing but amp up tensions and the idea that the police are there to do more than just serve and protect.</p>\n<p><img src=\"http://scottygee.com/police.jpeg\"/></p>\n<p>BUT</p>\n<p>I believe this calls for MORE funding for the police, not defunding the police, and certainly not ABOLISHING the police.  </p>\n<p>We have already started to see what happens in the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) with the absence of police.  Murders, rapes, assaults, people dying because paramedics can&#x27;t get in to help because they can&#x27;t enter the area without police protection.  CHAZ is going to further degenerate into chaos as time goes on.  </p>\n<p>Now imagine more major American cities with a greatly diminished or even disbanded police force. Nobody should and would feel safer than they do now, and allowing the people to take the law into their own hands is a recipe for carnage.</p>\n<p>So &quot;Defund the Police&quot; is a terrible idea.  More funding and MUCH more intensive training and evaluation is part, although not the entire answer.</p>\n<p>Policing MUST change, but defunding them is not the answer. Both can be true.</p>\n<p>I am convinced that most people agree, perhaps not with my statements here, but that two things can be true at the same time and can foster discussion, compromise, or at least agreeing to disagree, shaking hands, and continuing to work out our problems. I will defend the right of anyone to protest publicly because that freedom is what our Western society is based on.  </p>\n<p>BUT</p>\n<p>What is also true is that those that used the George Floyd murder and the subsequent, legitimate anger surrounding it to riot, to loot, to destroy, while invoking the name of George Floyd was disgusting.  In many cases, these rioters - I will not use the word protestors to describe them - were nothing more than extremists from groups such as Antifa looking to use this terrible event as a way to push their agenda by causing as much havoc as possible.</p>\n<p>Two things can be true at the same time.</p>\n<p><img src=\"http://scottygee.com/riots.jpg\"/></p>\n<p>How about another one?</p>\n<p>I am fully behind the statement Black Lives Matter.  Of course.  There is no reasonable person that would disagree with the statement.  There is also no reasonable person that would disagree with the fact that there are many black communities in America (and indeed in Canada) where the people that live there are behind the 8-ball from the start in terms of opportunity.  I&#x27;m not smart enough to know what the solutions are, but I do know that our leaders must find a way to help these communities lift themselves up so that as a group they have the same access to opportunity and prosperity that the rest of us have.</p>\n<p>BUT</p>\n<p>Black Lives Matter, the organization, has time and time again supported BDA (\rBoycott, Divest, and Sanction) Israel, which accuses Israel of genocide against Palestinians as well as labeling Israel an &quot;apartheid state&quot;.</p>\n<p>Why Black Lives Matter is involving themselves and backing an organization and a cause which has nothing to do with their own struggle and mission statement defies explanation.  Furthermore, their calls to Defund the Police are shortsighted and was bring nothing but further misery to their communities.</p>\n<p>So, while I can back the STATEMENT and the HUMAN SENTIMENT behind Black Lives Matter, I will not back the ORGANIZATION.</p>\n<p>Two things can be true at the same time.  \r<br/><br/>Want more?  Building on what I stated earlier.</p>\n<p>Policing in America (and again, in Canada as well) must change.  There must be massive reforms to the way that police officers are hired, trained, evaluated, and disciplined.</p>\n<p>The training must be much more rigorous.  To become a Navy Seal you must go through over a year of formal training.  Police officers in Minneapolis undergo 16 weeks of training and then further field experience and training.   I believe police officers should undergo at least a year of training as well as rigorous psychological evaluation before they are even allowed to interact with the public.  They should be trained in as many different scenarios as possible and re-evaluated on a yearly basis.</p>\n<p>The police should also be &quot;de-militarized&quot;.  Police forces do not need the level of military-style equipment and weaponry that they have with the exception of very specialized units in a very limited capacity.  Seeing armoured personnel vehicles rolling down the street and heavily armed police pouring out of it does nothing but amp up tensions and the idea that the police are there to do more than just serve and protect.</p>\n<p><img src=\"http://scottygee.com/police.jpeg\"/></p>\n<p>BUT</p>\n<p>I believe this calls for MORE funding for the police, not defunding the police, and certainly not ABOLISHING the police.  </p>\n<p>We have already started to see what happens in the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) with the absence of police.  Murders, rapes, assaults, people dying because paramedics can&#x27;t get in to help because they can&#x27;t enter the area without police protection.  CHAZ is going to further degenerate into chaos as time goes on.  </p>\n<p>Now imagine more major American cities with a greatly diminished or even disbanded police force. Nobody should and would feel safer than they do now, and allowing the people to take the law into their own hands is a recipe for carnage.</p>\n<p>So &quot;Defund the Police&quot; is a terrible idea.  More funding and MUCH more intensive training and evaluation is part, although not the entire answer.</p>\n<p>Policing MUST change, but defunding them is not the answer. Both can be true.</p>\n<p>I am convinced that most people agree, perhaps not with my statements here, but that two things can be true at the same time and can foster discussion, compromise, or at least agreeing to disagree, shaking hands, and continuing to work out our problems. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.” - George Orwell, from 1984.</p>\n<p>\r\rStatues being torn down.</p>\n<p>Movies being removed from platforms.</p>\n<p>Street names being changed.</p>\n<p>People being harassed, threatened, and losing their jobs for not going along with the &quot;party&quot;.</p>\n<p>Welcome to 1984.</p>\n<p>Let me preface this by saying that I am firmly in support of the PEACEFUL protests that have been happening across the United States and Canada after the death of George Floyd.  The right to protest is a cornerstone of our democracy and the protestors that are out there campaigning for justice for George Floyd and racial equality deserve to be heard, commended, and beyond that, they deserve to see results.</p>\n<p>However, there is a very obvious element that isn&#x27;t ready to settle for justice and equality.  They want to burn the whole thing down.  They want to remove every statue, every book, every movie, and more frighteningly, every PERSON that they feel are &quot;problematic&quot;.  This is where we begin to enter the realm that George Orwell described in his quote above.</p>\n<p>This is the first of a series of posts depicting our descent into 1984.</p>\n<p><strong>Gone With the Wind Removed From HBO Max</strong></p>\n<p><em>&quot;\rGone with the Wind has been taken off HBO Max following calls for it to be removed from the US streaming service.</em></p>\n<p><em>HBO Max said the 1939 film was &quot;a product of its time&quot; and depicted &quot;ethnic and racial prejudices&quot; that &#x27;were wrong then and are wrong today&#x27;.&quot; -  BBC News</em></p>\n<p>Gone With the Wind is one of the classic films in the history of films.  The film is set during the American Civil War and tells the story of Scarlett, O&#x27;Hara, the daughter of a Georgia plantation owner, and details her romantic pursuits.</p>\n<p>The film is controversial for its depiction of slaves as being almost content with their lot in life and loyal to their owners even after slavery is abolished.</p>\n<p>The movie, which is based on a 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell, was made in 1939.  Let&#x27;s not lose sight of the fact that both the novel and the movie were created when attitudes about race relations were much different than they are now.  </p>\n<p>Would a movie with such depictions of slavery be made now?  Definitely not, but you cannot judge works of the past in the same way that we do currently.  Applying today&#x27;s standards to works from 80 years ago or more is not possible.  It was a different time with different mentalities.</p>\n<p>What should be done with Gone With the Wind as well as other works from that time is dissect the work and discuss why the depiction of slavery is wrong and educate people on what slaves actually went through, and felt.  Getting rid of such works does nothing other than to erase the ability to discuss, dissect, and learn about the past and actively hinders us from changing the present.</p>\n<p>This is why the horrors of Nazi Germany and the bloody history of Communism must be taught as well.  The fact that so many young people openly support Communism shows that we have not done enough to educate our young people about an ideology that caused the deaths of over 100 million people.</p>\n<p>Covering our eyes and pretending that something never existed does not make it so, and only increases the possibility that we will repeat the horrors of the past.</p>\n<p>--</p>\n<p>I appreciate your taking the time to read this and all of your upvotes and follows.</p>\n<p>\r<br/>\r<br/></p>\n<p></p>\n</html>",
