What I am arguing is that feminism has found new ways to emerge as a movement that encompasses both men and women and is not anymore based on a contraposition between the two genders. This is exactly why feminism has stopped (or is stopping, perhaps?) to be a \"threatening\" or even \"shameful\" word, to reach instead its core: which is equal rights for women and men.  What I am saying is that this TV series, although very well-directed, stands against these new trends and brings feminism back to the \"fight against the man\" concept.",

I actually feel bad for them. \n\nAlmost without question, every single man in every generation, before the last couple, busted ass for his family, whether you agree or not with the structure, they did it, and they sacrificed a lot to make it happen for you to now live your Western plushy life.  Instead of pointing out toxic masculinity in your neighbours, why not go to the real source of this...the bankers and the politicians...that's where we could use your energy, instead of attacking your fellow man, attack the real head of the so-called 'toxic masculinity' snake. \n\nIf that's too much for your brain to grasp, then go travel somewhere little mouse and grow up. I'm sure the world of feminism looks very attractive when you're 14 years old, soft, and living life like a princess admiring her selfie wall, but before offering the world your little opinion...here's the advice that will save your life (and your brain) if you take it...travel little kitten, travel. By yourself, no mommy, expose yourself to real dangers, where you don't know the language, where you don't know what's what, where there's no Wifi. What will you do when there's trouble? Cry? Only one of two things will happen, either you'll become a man, or you'll be happy when a man comes by to save you - and see if you still hold your little feminist opinions, while you're cradled in his arms. His philosophy seems to seduce them much the same way the hero of a Barbara Cartland romance novel, with his smouldering good looks, will make the female protagonist go weak at the knees with a passionate kiss.\n\nHitler famously appropriated his work and turned him into a paragon of white supremacist philosophy.\n\nIt's been much the same again lately with the alt-right & alt-light using Nietzsche's name and texts for their own pretentious virtue signalling.\n\nI’ve always found Nietzsche to be a tiresome bore. I have made the effort to read some of his work in the past though and there’s a fabulous quote in the Antichrist that neatly illustrates Nietzsche's obliviousness to what drives men. (Or his wilful misrepresentation of it). \n\nHe describes the end game in what the church is trying to achieve with the concept of sin. It was fabricated, says Nietzsche, to undermine science and to prevent the emancipation of man from priest: “Man shall not look outside, he shall look into himself; he shall not look into things cleverly and cautiously, like a learner, he shall not look at all – he shall suffer.”\n\nFrom what I've seen of men throughout my life (the working class, blue collar ones I've largely been surrounded by) this is completely the opposite to what they do. Sin has never played a role in what drives men, their ego does. And they decidedly do not look into themselves when they consider things, such as their antagonism toward women.\n\nGreat swathes of the male population lie to themselves and say it’s woman that drives and defines the real politic between the sexes, that it’s external. It is not, it is internal. It is inside his own head. The fragile male psyche that is well aware of its own sensitivity but still blames women for a man’s own failings.\n\nWitness Elliot Rodger, sitting at the extreme end of this male phenomenon. He killed six people and wounded several others in an arbitrary act of revenge for his sexual rejection by women. Not long before the shooting he posted to youtube telling of the impending retribution he was about to inflict:\n\n<em>\"I don't know why you girls aren't attracted to me but I'm going to punish you for it. I'm the perfect guy and yet you throw yourselves at these obnoxious men instead of me, the perfect gentleman.\"</em>\n\nIf you're the kind of guy that will resort to inflicting wanton violence on the opposite sex it's probably not an inexplicable outcome when they ignore you. Most likely your social skills aren't the best.\n\nAnd remember Freud's little theory: woman’s problem is penis envy? This famous, and incredibly stupid, little nugget from Freud is man’s neuroses inverted and turned back on women. I find it far more plausible that men are afflicted with a terrible case of superiority complex at woman’s role in bearing newborn life. Hesiod described it vividly when Kronos swallowed his own children in a stunningly ridiculous case of uterus envy.\n\nWe are being reminded in the era of Trump and the surging conservative populism that the confused, flailing stupidity of misogyny and toxic masculinity knows no bounds and history is largely the unfolding of male delusions and neuroses which refuse to bow in the face of an unyielding reality.",

Protecting our bias and not wanting to admit fallibility is always far more important than accepting we’ve fallen short and willingly embraced a moral failing. (Note the breathtakingly hypocritical behaviour of the Evangelical Christian community in America toward Donald Trump).\n\nHarvey Weinstein’s behaviour is an excellent case study. His modus operandi is so clearly pre-meditated & calculated and he has practised it for years.  He approached his encounters with planning and preparation to orchestrate situations that would leave him alone with a trapped, vulnerable victim. He also had willing enablers and a support network to protect him.\n\nBut there's now an enormous queue of women shouting that they spoke up and nothing happened to this degenerate.\n\nAfter being assaulted by Harvey Weinstein Ambra Battilana Gutierrez went to the police, made a report, wore a wire, got Weinstein on tape admitting his assault (and appears to be trying a repeat performance attempting to bully her into the room with him), and then the NYPD sent it to New York District Attorney Cyrus Vance. He did nothing.\n\nIt’s an isolated and highly concentrated example of patriarchy at work.\n\nA powerful man sexually assaulting a woman followed by another powerful man refusing to acknowledge the criminal nature of his behaviour. Instead of using the law to protect the women within his community the Attorney protects the sexual abuser.\n\nThat’s patriarchy stripped bare. Men put themselves in charge and create an entire legal framework to institutionalise their power.\n\nUp until the 20th century the crime of rape was not a crime against a person but a property crime. The rapist hadn’t committed a \"theft\" of a woman's sex and body but violated another man’s property rights. The woman was largely irrelevant – apart from being inconveniently caught between the two men. It goes to the heart of how our world has been run for almost three millennia.\n\nWomen were only elevated above their non-status of non-citizen and non-person last century when the suffragettes successfully agitated for female enfranchisement. But we’re now well into the 21st century and the old guard are still doggedly hanging on to the age-old patriarchal ways of doing things.\n\nThe floodgates have been opened this year through the revelations around Roger Ailes, Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein. Their previously unassailable positions and the infuriating inability of anyone to make so much as a dent, as well as the countless other unknown men abusing their authority, appears to be finally starting to give way.\n\nWomen are becoming more emboldened to fight and whilst change takes time there is evidence that the culture of denial is finally changing for the better.\n\nThe other important aspect of this is that for some time there’s also been no recognition in the mainstream media that feminism still has a pitched battle to fight against patriarchy and misogyny. The mind-numbingly predictable response came right on cue with online trolls throwing some misogynist abuse, according to regular trolling S.O.P's, and media outlets dutifully reported said misogynist abuse, as they do.\n\nI appreciate what Arvida is doing but does it not highlight the futile nature of the whole thing. What passes for feminist debate these days is really just a neverending loop whereby a woman does something relatively innocuous, generally on social media, and the anti-feminsts yell vitriolic white noise at no-one in particular. With the article about Arvida I looked at the picture, scanned the comments, shrugged my shoulders, got a little frustrated, then shrugged my shoulders again.\n\nIt's a prime example of what defines the modern world: a pointless little ritual repeated ad infinitum in the online space where none of the participants have any intention of genuinely trying to engage with anyone else and obviously don't expect to influence others or achieve something that may resemble an outcome. (Violent clashes in Charlottesville and Berkeley not withstanding).\n\nThe only upside is that the woman-haters can only form a metaphorical mob these days, as opposed to the good old days when they could make a genuine example of a woman who had dared to challenge the patriarchical stereotypes; Hypatia being stabbed to death by a virulent pack of rabid christian men and literally torn limb from limb; and Joan of Arc - whose behaviour so scared the shit out of the church that she was tied to a stake and burnt alive, a precursor to the epidemic of witch burnings that came afterwards in the 16th & 17th centuries. Mercifully things have improved.\n\nOne would think the first thing the feminists should do is take control of the discussion but they've never proven very good at this. And it's only going backwards as it gets mixed up inextricably with pop culture and the corporate world sets the terms of the debate. Throughout the twentieth century it was Emmeline Pankhurst, Gloria Steinem & Germaine Greer throwing their intellectual heft and passion into the contest, stirring things up with their natural flair for dissent and disruption. Compare that to what's actually going on with Arvida Bystrom - a highly paid model, being paid a rather handsome sum for an endorsement contract, by a large international fashion label, the campaign being orchestrated by a phalanx of advertising professionals. These days feminism in the English speaking world largely just revolves around the vacuous goings on of Lena Dunham, Kim Kardashian & and their ilk. Frankly, it's incredibly depressing.\n\nWe appear to be reaching a stage though where if we leave it up to women to drive the feminist agenda on their own we're going to be waiting forever and I'm too enamoured with the idea of the 3000 year old patriarchal status quo - and the shitty masculine stereotype that accompanies it - going the way of the Dodo to put up with that. If Beyonce and Anita Sarkeesian are at the vanguard I'm adamant men need to start piling in and telling the alt-right/gamergate crowd to go and fuck themselves. It's probably not really in the spirit of things - and a little counter-productive - to have a dig at the feminists, but when a snivelling little fool like Milo Yiannopoulos is your main opponent and you're not making progress you really need to call for reinforcements. I'm just saying.\n\nThe project we call western civilization has been rolling on for at least two and a half thousand years, making relentless cultural progress in every aspect, except one; misognyny has never budged and after more than two millennia remains completely undiminished. Whilst we don't burn women alive anymore the role women should be playing in society evidently still isn't happening. We need to see men being far more proactive with this and as a starting point we just need to commit to making concrete contributions in the workplace, the sporting clubs and anywhere else that men are trying to perpetuate the patriarchal status quo. Don't just make meaningless comments on twitter and facebook or post selfies wearing t-shirts. Because that's not what a feminist looks like, it's what a lazy, cynical dipshit looks like.",

What is patriarchy?\n\nIt's a system within communities, organisations and governments in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it. It's men removing women’s personal agency and subordinating them. Controlling their sexual, reproductive, economic and civil circumstances. Patriarchy means that men control women and decide how women can behave in every facet of their lives.\n\nSo it revolves around a very distinct power imbalance which many men often exploit ruthlessly, specifically to the detriment of women. (And often men as well, but mainly women).\n\nMany no longer appear to connect this with the feminist movement. We live in an era where feminism has been co-opted and made to be synonymous with consumer capitalism, and the word 'feminism' has largely become interchangeable with the word 'empowerment'. Most would seem to assume that what passes for a feminist ethos is to buy whatever product or trinket you desire and then, when the resulting feeling of satisfaction ensues, because it's a woman doing the purchasing, she's empowered and hey presto, that's feminism.\n\nBut of course it's not. And the revelations of Harvey Weinstein's decades long rampage of predatory sexual assaults should be bringing that into stark relief for anyone who still requires to get up to speed on this. Weinstein, like countless other men, understands the power imbalance he occupies well and he has exploited it relentlessly and without conscience for years.\n\nAt the core of the feminist philosophy is being able to recognise that the fight is against the men who are forever looking to perpetuate a one-sided status quo that gives men the power and keeps it away from women - at both the personal and institutional level.\n\nAfter Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial ended in a mistrial his publicist gloated “Mr Cosby’s power is back. It’s back. He has been restored.” Why wouldn't he say that? It's so depressingly true. Several dozen women have made compelling, detailed allegations against Cosby and he once admitted in a deposition that he drugged women with Quaaludes. He has still never faced justice.\n\nGo ahead and make yourself blissfully happy with as much retail therapy as you can afford. Don't confuse it with feminism though. That means treating these men for the criminals that they are and making sure women can speak up when they're harassed and abused, not left to shut up while he keeps doing it to other hapless victims. That's our job incidentally, not the victims, and we've all been failing miserably.",
