Knowingly or unknowingly, we are all searching for happiness, joy, and satisfaction, and we base the choices we make on what we feel will create the most gratification for us. However, despite living in an era where things are more convenient and accessible than ever, we often find ourselves feeling more discontent, disconnected, and unfulfilled than ever. It is becoming increasingly common for us to see ourselves lacking in physical comfort, mental calmness, and a positive outlook on life, three fundamental components that promote a happy, fulfilling life. Today I would like to explore deeper into these qualities and how we can improve them to enjoy an elevated natural state effortlessly all the time. # Physical Comfort # ![importance-of-yoga.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaUr1TcFTLguGbqXiQeAaFMt4CpMjMZ2QAFB1q9YP5PUJ/importance-of-yoga.jpg) Physical comfort comes from having a healthy body that has adequate rest, regular exercise, and a healthy diet. We must create healthy habits such as sleeping early, walking or moving frequently, and eating more fruits and drinking enough water because a healthy body plays such a significant role in our overall morale and emotional state. The most important thing we must do is to identify our unhealthy habits and slowly replace them with healthier habits, by either changing the environment or changing our attitude and how we perceive them. Another key influence on our physical comfort is our posture and comportment. Whether walking, standing, or sitting, we should always engage in the right posture. This means our back is straight, and our shoulders slightly rolled back so that pressure on our muscles and joints are evenly distributed. When our breaths are long and deep, our heart also works more efficiently, and our resting heart rate decreases to around 50-60 beats per minute. The natural law of cause and effect tells us that all effects have a cause, and all causes will lead to an effect. This being the case, everything in this very moment is exactly the way it is supposed to be because of all past causes and conditions, and by acknowledging this, we learn to make peace with what is. When we identify certain thought patterns that are unconstructive such as thoughts of anger, hatred, jealousy, arrogance, selfishness and ignorance, we must first realize, through contemplation and introspection, their destructive nature. Only then can we inspire the desire to replace them with more wholesome qualities such as thoughts of patience, kindness, empathy, humility, gratitude, and generosity. When we take on the task of transforming our thoughts and perceptions, we have introduced a spiritual beauty to life that promises great joy and fulfillment because it completely changes our views of ourselves, our experiences, the people around, and the very world we live in. Then all life experiences serve to bring happiness and pleasure or to teach us a lesson that we need to learn. You never know what you’re going to get”. The thing is, we are continually reminded of the validity of this quote every single day. Life is full of ups and downs, highs and lows, happiness and heartbreak, the expected and the unexpected. It is natural for us to prefer the good times and to hope everything goes our way. In this article, I would like to suggest that we should all enjoy the good times, but also learn from the bad. That life is never going to pan out the way we expect it, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The perception of good comes from us liking something, and the perception of bad comes from what we dislike. It is not always possible to control the external environment to always get what we want, but we can most definitely manage our attitude and how we perceive things. Because when our attitude changes, our perceptions change, and that changes everything. For example, when we experience frustration and disappointment, problems and setbacks, instead of letting it bring us down, we can perceive them as precious opportunities that test our resolve and challenge our problem-solving abilities. Simply by making this one small change in attitude, these once negative situations now become tools for spiritual growth and personal development. It’s not to say that such moments won’t still be challenging, but they will be confronted with positivity, hope, and enthusiasm. Over time, we will see the importance of having obstacles and challenges in life as they provide us with so much wisdom, experience, and understanding. Then we naturally develop a mind that remains calm and optimistic regardless of the surrounding environment, and we learn to perceive the positive qualities of all circumstances. When that happens, we cannot help but feel stressed, anxious, and hopeless. But what if what we think is best for us is what is limiting us? That when we insist on one rigid path, we lose sight of everything else around us? I want to suggest that life may be more adventurous, meaningful, and vast if we were to maintain an open heart, a flexible mind, and a curious attitude. We must admit to ourselves that we don’t always know what’s best for us, because there is just too much we haven’t considered, too much we cannot see. It’s possible to remain positive in all circumstances, optimistic in the face of all challenges, and hopeful at all times, because there are always benefits, opportunities and precious lessons within all good or bad situation. We just need to know where and how to look, and it begins with developing a flexible, curious, and brave attitude. As with all phenomena, there is always another side, and it’s up to us to uncover it. For example, being sick at home may seem bad, but it gives you some time for reading, meditation, or introspection. You never know what you’re going to get”. The thing is, we are continually reminded of the validity of this quote every single day. Life is full of ups and downs, highs and lows, happiness and heartbreak, the expected and the unexpected. It is natural for us to prefer the good times and to hope everything goes our way. But despite so, that is never the case, and to be honest, I think life is better with a mix of everything; like a box of chocolate.\n\n![tx4aga7lwuu21.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmY6b7PvvYgaTvRzk4FUEdswsUSwrfKeacU34zuWCLxgtc/tx4aga7lwuu21.jpg)\n\nWould life really be that perfect if everything always went the way we wanted it to? Do we always know what’s best for us? Or do good things sometimes arise from seemingly adverse circumstances? And is it actually better to also experience a degree of hardship and obstacles?\n\nIn this article, I would like to suggest that we should all enjoy the good times, but also learn from the bad. That life is never going to pan out the way we expect it, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. That everything is teaching us something we need to learn, and all of life’s imperfections are what makes life perfect just the way it is.\n\n# Enjoying the good and learning from the bad #\n\n![learned-optimism-4174101-5c047424c9e77c0001ad2ad2.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPMwxyn9LwBWLRWAfvyy6BeE9WnyUwENcxmDZFJ5TY1fn/learned-optimism-4174101-5c047424c9e77c0001ad2ad2.png)\n\nIt is inevitable that life will always be a mixture of good and bad. The perception of good comes from us liking something, and the perception of bad comes from what we dislike. It is not always possible to control the external environment to always get what we want, but we can most definitely manage our attitude and how we perceive things. Because when our attitude changes, our perceptions change, and that changes everything.\n\nFor example, when we experience frustration and disappointment, problems and setbacks, instead of letting it bring us down, we can perceive them as precious opportunities that test our resolve and challenge our problem-solving abilities. Simply by making this one small change in attitude, these once negative situations now become tools for spiritual growth and personal development. It’s not to say that such moments won’t still be challenging, but they will be confronted with positivity, hope, and enthusiasm.\n\nOver time, we will see the importance of having obstacles and challenges in life as they provide us with so much wisdom, experience, and understanding. Then we naturally develop a mind that remains calm and optimistic regardless of the surrounding environment, and we learn to perceive the positive qualities of all circumstances. All it takes is a change in attitude and suddenly all situations, good or bad, become learning moments and opportunities for growth; we become open to all the valuable lessons life is trying to teach us.\n\n# Life is an adventure full of mysteries and the unexpected #\n\n![hope-in-career-development-750x450.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaCzhsNbFB8ieK2kyQey2J3trQVpVVzfW2mNC4SyRFPiT/hope-in-career-development-750x450.jpg)\n\nWe all have an ideal we want to follow. A path we think will lead us to happiness and fulfillment. And we want nothing more than for things to go the way we plan. However, life is never straightforward, throwing all sorts of mysterious possibilities and unexpected scenarios our way when we least see it coming. When that happens, we cannot help but feel stressed, anxious, and hopeless.\n\nBut what if what we think is best for us is what is limiting us? That when we insist on one rigid path, we lose sight of everything else around us? I want to suggest that life may be more adventurous, meaningful, and vast if we were to maintain an open heart, a flexible mind, and a curious attitude. We must admit to ourselves that we don’t always know what’s best for us, because there is just too much we haven’t considered, too much we cannot see. It’s possible to remain positive in all circumstances, optimistic in the face of all challenges, and hopeful at all times, because there are always benefits, opportunities and precious lessons within all good or bad situation. We just need to know where and how to look, and it begins with developing a flexible, curious, and brave attitude.\n\nAs with all phenomena, there is always another side, and it’s up to us to uncover it. For example, being sick at home may seem bad, but it gives you some time for reading, meditation, or introspection. Losing your job may appear to be a great misfortune, but it’s also a good chance to choose something else you really enjoy, to reignite your passion, and to start a fresh new chapter. Being constantly busy at work may seem too much to bear, but it’s a unique opportunity to cultivate patience, concentration, and empathy and become a master of your trade. When something bad happens, it is up to us to uncover its positive side, change its label from disaster to opportunity, and turn anxiety and despair into gratitude and optimism. Over time, we will see the light within all seemingly dark situations, we realize that life has a perfect blend of mystery, adventure and opportunity, and that’s what makes life perfect just the way it is. What is it? That’s entirely up to us. It is not surprising that optimistic and grateful people are generally happier and more fulfilled because they perceive the positives in life. Similarly, closed-minded and negative people tend to suffer more stress, anxiety, and misfortune because they habitually focus more on the downside. With a flexible, open mind and a curious, brave attitude, we will realize that our family, friends and colleagues all have experiences we can learn from, that our schools and workplaces are places for growth and development, and that all of life’s ups and downs, highs and lows are valuable lessons that serve to teach us something we need to learn. When we live life with such a mindset, every day is full of potential, every moment is a miracle, and every experience is uniquely profound. Below, I discuss three practical and effective ways to deal with anger and how we can transform it into patience, kindness, and insight. **Patience against Anger** Like all feelings and emotions, anger arises from conditions and will inevitably pass away. Instead of trying to suppress it by pushing it away, or reacting to it with destructive actions, we can simply observe it, remain calm and gentle-minded, and let it pass away on its own. When a person is calm, his energy affects all the people around, bringing others an air of comfort and peace by making them feel that everything is going to be okay. A calm person is relaxed, assured, and stable, making him better capable of dealing with stressful situations and solving problems effectively and efficiently. Consequently, he gains the respect of others, is pleasant to be around, and abides joyfully in this world. Today, I’d like to share two main ways to develop our inner calmness by highlighting how to increase our physical calm as well as our mental stillness. **Physical Calm** ![AN32-Heart-Plate-Jumprope-732x549-thumb.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmT5LTyCxRzA4DfXruPxgcULdpYaCWBpMZsCaYwaG21ZmZ/AN32-Heart-Plate-Jumprope-732x549-thumb.jpg) Healthy lifestyle concept with diet and fitness on blue boards Because of our mind-body connection, the condition of our physical well-being has a significant influence on our feelings and emotions. If we can maintain a healthy body, our mind will benefit immensely, and we will feel an elevated sense of joy, calm and confidence, and overall positivity. We must always be mindful of the three basic yet vital aspects of a healthy body and monitor them daily. These three pillars of good health are: eating healthy, resting adequately, and exercising frequently. When we can manage these three things well, we will see a significant change in our mental well-being that in turn, leads to inner calmness. Furthermore, it is important to maintain good posture throughout the day to ensure the tension on our joints and muscles are properly distributed and that we keep our body parts in their rightful positions to minimize stress. Whether we are sitting, standing, or walking, our backs should always be upright, our shoulders should be pulled slightly back, and our necks should be comfortably rested with our gaze just a little lower than horizontal. We should always assume relaxed comportment and avoid tensing up our shoulders, jaws, necks, or legs. We can do this by practicing several rounds of mindful breathing every hour or whenever we can remember. We take a deep breath and fill our lungs up with a good dose of oxygen. Then on our out-breath, we send our body into relaxation by letting go of all the tension throughout our body that we have been carrying unconsciously. You can try it now for yourself to uncover just how much strain your body is carrying. Over time, when our sleep, diet, and exercise is well managed, our physical posture is realigned, and we have regained mindfulness of our breathing, we will notice a sharp increase in our body’s physical comfort. We will feel calm and relaxed wherever we are, whatever we are doing. **Mental Calm** Because we cannot physically see our minds, it is easy to forget that it also needs taking care of. However, not everyone knows how to care for our mental well-being, and so in many cases, we end up doing things that instead bring it harm and suffering. When we witness with mindfulness that wholesome qualities lead to inner peace and happiness, we will naturally begin doing more good and less bad. We learn to live life more harmoniously, generously, and lovingly. By having the trust of our family, we can focus on providing for them and enjoy every moment with them. With the trust of our colleagues and managers, we can have more energy to focus on our work and maximize productivity, which leads to greater morale in the workplace. And by gaining the trust of our friends and acquaintances, we create an aura of ease and positivity that others enjoy being around. To earn the trust of the people around us, it is important to develop a deep trust in ourselves, cultivate a great forgiving mind, and have the benefits of others in mind. Today, I’d like to discuss how easy it is to do this, once we make a few simple adjustments to our attitude and the way we think. **Trusting Ourselves** ![shutterstock_1027589116.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRY82zRBUEbCMqmcZgwZhbdKDMneKP73dCnQwHAcAMd9L/shutterstock_1027589116.png) We must first learn to trust ourselves before we can expect others to do the same towards us. When we ourselves are not assured about the things we do, say and think, how can we expect others to feel assured about us too? The first adjustment we must make is to develop the habit of keeping our word, even to ourselves. When we say we are going to do something, we must do it; otherwise, don’t say it. When we create the habit of constantly going against what we say or making excuses for ourselves, we will do the same to others, which takes away the strength of our word. Consequently, others’ trust in us diminishes. Not only should we trust what we say, we must also trust how we think; our values, principles, and thought processes. When we are consistently unsure of ourselves and always full of doubt, we will have no confidence in our decision making, which can be sensed by others through our body language, speech, and energy. When we do not have the confidence of others, it will influence the effectiveness of everything we do. To trust how we think, our mind must encompass the interests of others. A person who only thinks for themselves has a small mind, very inward-focused energy, and will not feel considered by others; he will not have the trust of others. However, if a person thinks beyond just themselves, their mind expands, their energy is vast, and others will feel within that person’s care and consideration. Such a person can trust their thinking because they have others at heart. It is unavoidable that as imperfect human beings with differing views, we will sometimes create misunderstandings, make mistakes, and have disagreements. To firstly forgive ourselves is the only way to move on from pain to pleasure, from darkness to light and from negativity to positivity. To do so, we must have a deep understanding in what we’ve done and how we feel, to acknowledge that we cannot change the past, to learn from our experience, and to use them as tools for spiritual growth and personal development. With such an attitude, we can truly make peace with our past, practice self-love, and feel that no matter what, we will be okay. However, developing a mind of benefiting others can be a very daunting and difficult task because we may ask, “what’s in it for us?” But once we experience just how much joy and happiness we create for ourselves and those around by generating such a mind, wanting to benefit others will come naturally. In the beginning, it may seem challenging to expand our sphere of contemplation beyond a limited circle. How can we think of everyone when we cannot even properly take care of ourselves or our immediate family? It is okay to begin with ourselves and our family, but we must have the intention to want to grow it outwards. It benefits us immensely to think about the wellbeing of our colleagues, acquaintances among others, because having their trust, creating healthy and happy relationships, and promoting a relaxed and harmonious environment, establishes the type of love, joy, and fulfillment that money cannot buy.
