| body | Over the years, I've conducted extensive research on health topics such as obesity, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. I have also studied theories of behavior change. What jumps out at me the most is how many of these conditions are preventable. Yes, there are non-modifiable factors however, it is our behaviors that are causing damage to our health and wellness. Essentially, we are all aware of our unhealthy behaviors and the consequences associated with them. I feel like I'm a misfit in society because I actually enjoy physical activity, going to the gym and pushing my body to its limits. I was also criticised heavily because it took me nearly two weeks to finishing watching the third season of Stranger Things. Let that sink in. We live in a society where it is the norm to watch an entire season of a television series over a weekend, let alone one day and this is completely acceptable, even encouraged. I feel like I have to justify why I don't binge watch television, why I wake up early to exercise and why I restrict processed foods (among many other ingredients) from my diet. My reason is simple, I do it for my health. Health is a priority to me and I want to face the daily challenges of life with the least amount of pain, discomfort and illness as possible. I'm not a machine, I get sick on occasion and I have a history of injuries. I watch television and movies and I'm known to indulge in a meal or snack of the unhealthy variety on occasion. I try to keep my immune system optimal and reduce my risk of injury through strength and flexibility training. Let's examine exercise. Most of us know that it is beneficial to our health, not just physically but emotionally as well. Increased levels of physical activity have the potential to lower the risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease (among many more) according to multiple sources. We know that being inactive increases the risk of the mentioned conditions, yet many of us choose to do nothing about it. There is a disconnect between what we know and what we do. Do we not prioritize our health and quality of life? Do we get distracted with the ease of technology and everything available at the touch of a button? Do we know how many deaths can be prevented each year by modifying our behaviors? So much of what we experience is preventable if we take the necessary precautions. We don't have to wait until we get diagnosed to make a change. We can make changes so that we don't get diagnosed. We do have the time if we make it a priority. We can find a plethora of excuses why we don't exercises of we can focus on reasons why we should. I can honestly say that I am 100% responsible for all of the injuries I've sustained in my lifetime. Whether it was negligence, ignorance or ego, I was at fault and I take full ownership of that. Now let's take ownership of our health and strive for progression.  |

Severe cases can lead to serious respiratory disease, and even pneumonia. On January 30, 2020, the WHO declared the Covid-19 outbreak a global health emergency. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared it a global pandemic. Risk factors - The following are the risk factors that are likely to predispose the people to Covid-19 infection - Age 65 years and older - People, who are 65 years and older, are at a higher risk of Covid-19 infection due to their decreased immunity. They are more likely to have some associated co-morbidities like diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Also, the course of disease tends to be more severe in them resulting in higher mortality. However, its transmission among the elderly population can be reduced by taking appropriate preventive measures. Chronic lung disease and asthma - People with asthma are more likely to catch Covid-19. The hospital data shows that respiratory patients are more likely to experience severe complications. As there is still no cure for it, the best action that people can take is to protect themselves from infection. The same is the case with other chronic lung diseases. Serious heart conditions - Covid-19 causes direct damage to the lungs and triggers an inflammatory response, which places stress on the cardiovascular system in two ways, viz. by infecting the lungs the blood oxygen levels drop and the inflammatory effects of the virus itself cause the blood pressure to drop as well. Researchers found that among individuals with Covid-19 aged less than 60 years in New York City, those with a BMI between 30-34 Kg/m2 and greater than 35 Kg/m2 were 1.8 times and 3.6 times more likely to be admitted to critical care respectively than individuals with a BMI lesser than 30 Kg/m2. A new study published in 2020 in Diabetes Care concluded that patients with Covid-19 are two and a half times more likely to have severe pneumonia if they are obese than if they are not. Obesity brings with itself a chronic inflammatory state. Whether obesity is an independent risk factor for susceptibility to infection requires further research. Diabetes - Diabetes is a risk factor for hospitalization and mortality of the Covid-19 infection. Diabetics have impaired immune response to infection concerning cytokine profile and changes in immune-responses including T-cell and macrophage activation. Poor glycemic control impairs several aspects of the immune response to viral infection and also to the potential bacterial secondary infection in the lungs. Poor glycemic control is a risk factor for Covid-19 infection and its adverse outcomes. Hence the importance of tight glycemic control in diabetics cannot be overlooked. Chronic kidney disease - People with chronic kidney disease are at an increased risk of the infection. People on dialysis can have weaker immune systems, making it harder to fight infections. | body | It has been over a year since the Covid19 Pandemic struck the world. What should you do now? First, I am not a Doctor, I do not even have a background in the medical field. My background is in the security and lock business. I do have a lot of common sense and I can separate the hype from reality. Unfortunately, it was an election year when this virus hit. That made it political. Both parties should be ashamed of themselves. I honestly believe that if politics were not involved less people would have died. Decisions were made based on politics not what was the best for the American people. That continues today. The news outlets have also turned political. I remember a time that when you tuned into the news you felt that you were getting the truth with no bias. Today that is also very different, and that difference has also cost American lives. The news media is very quick to report anything without doing their own research. This causes them to give the wrong information to people, again costing lives. Fortunately, people have caught on to this and now get their news form multiple sources that they trust. Therefore, newspapers are closing down, and people are "cutting the cord" going to what they want to watch by streaming. So, what should you do Now? Well, it seems that infections, hospitalization, and deaths are going down. The consensus from the Medical Experts is that by fall we should be back to normal, whatever that is. You should do what seems right to you. Use your common sense. Get your news from as many different sources as you can. In my opinion everyone should get the vaccine. I realize that there has been some resistance from some people. I think that this resistance is age related. Older people over 60 were quick to get the vaccine when offered, after all they were the age group that was dying. The younger generations not so much. Think of it this way over 95% of every American as been vaccinated against Polio, measles, mumps, and other childhood diseases. How many Children and Babies would have died if their parents refused to get them vaccinated. As adults getting a vaccine is your choice, do your research, make sure you research multiple reputable sources. Look for sources that DO NOT agree with your position, so you can get a clear picture of the other side. Then make the decision that is best for you. | body | Setting a goal to lose weight has its drawbacks. It is hard to measure unless of course you set a goal to lose xxx amount of kilos in xxx number of weeks or months. The problem with a goal such as this is that it lacks definitive action. It is easier to set a healthy living goal. Then you can decide on the steps you are going to take to achieve your goal. A healthy living goal means eating more healthy foods and becoming more physically active. That does not mean that you have to go all out and become a fitness freak overnight. It is important to take small bite sized steps so that your body can get used to the changes. Focus on the healthy lifestyle rather than your waistline. Which task is easier? To lose weight or to change your diet. Focus on actions rather than the outcome as the outcome will be a product of the actions. When I was involved in athletics and training, I had my goals such as to beat my personal best times in the middle distance and road races but my focus was on what I had to do to achieve those goals. I was not going to achieve personal best times unless I trained for it. The elite athletes performing at their best at the olympics make it all look so easy but what you see is the results of years of hard work and sacrifice. It all requires focus. The key to all of this is passion. No one can put their bodies through all of this discipline unless they have passion for what they are doing. It is passion which powers perseverance. As an athlete I was not blessed with an abundance of talent but made the most of what ability I had to perform at my best. What has all of this got to do with losing weight and living a healthy lifestyle? It is about living your best life. An unhappy, unfulfilled life is going to sabotage your efforts to lose weight because you will always find an excuse to comfort eat if you are trying to lose weight or miss a day's training if you are involved in sport. The bottom line is this: If you do not look forward to getting up in the morning then changes need to be made. Think about what you used to enjoy doing when you were younger. Is it possible to take up some of these old interests? Getting involved in something you are passionate about will get you off the couch and away from the TV and that can undermine your healthy living goals if you don't keep it in check. Remember the old saying "Use it or lose it." Taking a balanced approach to life is the way to go when working on living a healthy life. What is RDA? RDA is Recommended Dietary Allowance use for the average daily intake level that is sufficient to meet the requirement of nearly all healthy individuals in a particular life stage and gender group. The RDA by definition is the lowest level of nutrient intake necessary to prevent deficiencies. It's also clearly important for helping individuals avoid acute deficiency diseases, but it fails to redress the issue of optimal nutrition. With RDA, it's wonderful that have been so successful in reducing acute diseases. However, another questions arise is the RDA level of vitamins and mineral is enough to prevent degenerative diseases? Many degenerative diseases and chronic illness develop over a lifetime, striking otherwise healthy individuals when they least expected. Minimal intakes at this point may not be adequate to address modern lifestyle challenges. If I eat a healthy diet, do I still need supplements? Do note that eating a healthy diet is a necessary foundation for any program of optimal nutrition and there is no substitute for eating well. From the journal by American Medical Associations that publishes two articles separately in the year of 2002 and 2012 as follows: Article 1: "Vitamins for Chronic Disease Prevention in Adults". Through their research, these independent researchers concluded: "... sub optimal intake of some vitamins, above levels causing classic vitamin deficiency, is a risk factor for chronic diseases and common in the general population, especially the elderly. Suboptimal folic acid levels, along with sub optimal levels of vitamins B6 and B12, are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, neural tube defects, and colon and breast cancer; low levels of vitamin D contribute to osteopenia and fractures; and low levels of the antioxidant vitamins (vitamins A, E and C) may increase risk for several chronic diseases." Article 2: "Multivitamins in the Prevention of Cancer in Men". "A daily multivitamin supplement significantly but modestly reduced the risk of total cancer during a mean of 11 years of treatment and follow-up. Although the main reason to take multivitamins is to prevent nutritional deficiency, these data provide support for the potential use of multivitamin supplements in the prevention of cancer." From the two article that I have shared by American Medical Associations that supplements intake does reduce the risk of degenerative diseases and from my personal view that optimal nutrients from healthy diet may not be enough to prevent degenerative diseases that may occur to you. There are thousands of supplement brand selling from pharmacy to retail stores and you are definitely not sure which brand to go or the needs require for yourself.
