In fact, the readme in their Github repo starts with the famous quote by John. F. Kennedy:\n\n“We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.”\n\nTheir goal of developing fully autonomous cars by 2020 is equally ambitious. However, it is not new. The dream for completely autonomous cars is decades old. To remind you, it has been ten years since DARPA unveiled the Urban Challenge in 2007. With a massive increase in computing power and AI capabilities, this goal is all the more realizable.aidu Research has released its Open Source Autonomous Driving platform called Apollo. It believes that open sourcing poses a win-win situation; community development is faster for testing and deployment, therefore, pacing the project, forbye more participants implies more travel data.  Armed with massive collaboration with other institutions, Apollo is ready to transform the Autonomous Driving Industry.\nFeatures of Apollo\n\nDevelopers of Apollo have built a platform capable of supporting versatile tasks like intelligent control, precise sensing, and localization and cloud ecosystem in which the vehicle and the cloud are unified.\n\nApollo runs entirely on ROS (Robot Operating System) and supports C++ and Python; however, Python 3 support is currently unavailable. It provides localization and basic controls. As for the hardware, it supports GPS and IMUs (for locomotion and orientation).\n\nThe platform is clearly in its early days. The crucial elements of autonomous driving like perception and motion planning are still lacking. Furthermore, support for basic sensors like LiDAR, RADAR, Camera is still under development.",

The design and pattern of the system are very similar to the real brain structure. Its sensory processing power is equivalent of 64 million neurons and 16 billion synapses, while the processor component will consume the energy of merely 10 watts.\n\nIBM TrueNorth Neurosynaptic system’s 64-chip array will power the system. IBM believes that TrueNorth’s designs will be much efficient than the systems that develop conventional chips. TrueNorth system can convert data like images and videos into symbols in real time.\n\nThe system will facilitate ‘data parallelism’ and ‘model parallelism.’ The system is devised such that if one part stops working, other will continue without any disturbance. Though not entirely a brain, it is very similar.\nAs the right brain is for perception and the left for symbol processing, AFRL combines these two capabilities into the conventional computer system.  “AFRL was the earliest adopter of TrueNorth for converting data into decisions,” said Daniel S. Goddard, director, information Directorate, U.S. Air Force Research Lab.\n\nThis Neurosynaptic system will assist AFRL’s technological designings for Air Force because of such technical advances on its side.\n\nDharmendra S. Modha, chief scientist of this research, said that the advancement in IBM TrueNorth marks their possibility of leading in AI Hardware Innovation industry. He also mentioned that the company has increased the number of neurons per system from just 256 to 64 million, in last six years.\n\nTrueNorth Neurosynaptic System was initially worked upon under the authority of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’S (DARPA) ‘syNAPSE’ program.",
