      "body": "I am a big fan of Proof of Stake (PoS).\n\nPoS is going to become a major topic over the next year as more people realize that Bitcoin's Proof of Work (PoW) is fueled by fossil fuels, mostly coal, and is horribly unsustainable. \n\nI thought up with this article because distribution is vital to the security and value of PoS coins.\nI have included a few PoW coins for comparison.\n\nFor those of you that are not familiar, PoS is an alternative consensus protocol for securing a blockchain. \nBitcoin uses a PoW consensus protocol. Because of popularity of Bitcoin the PoW protocol is the most well known and understood of protocols. There are others which are not yet common and I will save their mention for another day.\n\nEthereum is trying to move to PoS (in order to lower fees and increase speeds), but has not been able to manage it so far.\n\n\n---\n\nLet's look at #Bitcoin (BTC) to get an idea of what a good distribution looks like.\nRegardless of any criticisms, there are many good reasons that make BTC the market leader.\nA great distribution is one.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbjWbX1XawJTQMe39bTWYXavpTX9etBjHveYfqTaxoYVR/image.png)\n \nThe other chart that I would like to show you is not loading....\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPf19gkPpfX7JySyy468MhcrzPn5uEQLptSQ4ghSoboEA/image.png)\n\nAh! Bitcoin! \nSlow!\n\nThis chart is less pretty, but will suffice.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVotz8ji2irmVeJTunNH95yeWGnyvnFfCS924b9oiVy6n/image.png)\n\nTop 2 addresses own about 2%\nThe top 110 addresses own roughly 19%\n\n---\n\n#BlackCoin (BLK) is the oldest pure PoS coin based on Bitcoin. \nIt has an even distribution and a strong community.\nI believe that at it's current marketcap it is one of the best buys available today.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdUQs6MjVJJELNn9TmAntQRAwyXMAK3ngxvnBWCyqZdu7/image.png)\n\nIt started with a PoW period, with no premine, in order to ensure that nobody could control 51% of the network (avoiding the dreaded 51% attack which you probably know about from BTC discussions).\nBut, it has since switched to pure PoS believing that PoW is wasteful and unnecessary.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVQEerwKoeZQshb2C6dmVDKCtaDFjdYA8QYWPt65APhGY/image.png)\n\nFrom the clustering of Bittrex and Poloniex wallets you can see the result of the mining pools selling to exchanges during the initial PoW phase.\n\n\nThis is the BLK equivalent chart that didn't load for BTC\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRvtmAqC2K9ERwK4UyoYiwXUwj7bsqfxavKpeBzJXbJZB/image.png)\n\nBTC is far more widely used and has many orders of magnitude more addresses.\nThe main difference in value between BTC and BLK is the fullness of the orderbook (past and present).\n\nI am not here however to show you why BTC is more valuable than BLK.\nBut, why BLK is undervalued on the market.\n\n---\n\n#NavCoin is a promising project in the privacy sector. [Apparently the large wallet is an investor](https://www.reddit.com/r/Digibyte/comments/6fsnw4/can_someone_bother_to_explain_the_ridiculous_coin/?st=jdgz4ruh&sh=529b71b5)...       "body": "Mostly I host tea parties, but since some of the tea parties I host are Cryptocurrency themed I am increasingly seen as an expert in the field.\nThat perception is not quite accurate, but I am not an idiot, and I've been interested in crypto for much longer than most of my friends making me relatively knowledgeable. \n\nI am writing this as a primer for friends who are just coming onto the scene.\n\nThis is not investment advice.\nThat would be an easy way to get into trouble. :P\n\n#Exchanges\n\nFirst thing you need to know is probably where to buy:\nIf you are a drug dealer and you want to remain anonymous than Bitcoin ATMs are probably your best bet, but otherwise you should probably use an exchange like [GDAX](gdax.com).\nI used to recommend Coinbase to super beginners, but the fees are stupid and if you can't manage GDAX you probably shouldn't put any money into crypto.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWkq4yYgTZeeTS68J6VcSzSCBjc59j1gcrqdX3N6RQnYa/image.png)\n\nGDAX is great because it has no market maker fees, but it is limited to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and now Bitcoin Cash.\nThis limitation is severe, but it's a good place to start.\nIf you don't know anything except the names than you should probably not get too involved in what you don't understand. \nMany good friends started with these four and used only the profits made off of these investments to diversify. I now think this may be the best tact because you will be taxed for exchanging these coins for other coins, and they are most likely to be the most stable of whatever is on the market because they have the best support all over the world. \n\n\n\nThe next thing you will need will be a more advanced exchange. The most popular options [can be found here](https://coinmarketcap.com/exchanges/volume/24-hour/).\n\nIn order of today's rankings:\n\n[Binance](binance.com) is great because fees are paid in BNB coin and because they have a great selection and high volume. Their Chinese name is 币安 (coin peace) and they have a lot of Asian projects that you can't get on Bittrex. I believe that it is for this reason that they have recently passed Bitfinex and Bittrex in volume.\n\n[Bithumb](bithumb.com) is Korean only. They have strict KYC/AML.\n\n[Bitfinex](bitfinex.com) is not allowing registrations right now because they are for pro traders and all of the small accounts are slowing things down. They are international, but Americans and Chinese are disallowed. \n\n[Bittrex.com](bittrex.com) is a California based company and one of the few legal options for New York customers. They have a great selection and volume but are somewhat limited in Asia based projects and coins which would run them afoul of the SEC.\n\n[OkEx](okex.com) was big in China before the most recent ban. Their primary address is in Belize, but they also have a correspondence address in Hong Kong. They do not allow customers from Hong Kong, China, or the USA.  \n\n[Poloniex](poloniex.com) is the old standard for US based traders. The selection may look limited to noobs, but I expect a resurgence in some of their selection which is being overlooked as so many new coins and tokens are released in a steady stream. Withdrawal limits are low in order to encourage KYC. \n\n[Huobi](huobi.pro) is another Chinese exchange that took a hard hit with the ban. They still have a strong Korean presence, and have recently made a partnership with SBI in Japan. (SBI is the Comcast of Japan)\n\n[GDAX](gdax.com) is way down to #8 in terms of volume because they only have USD trading pairs. Also, I bet some people are still sore about the handover of user info (20k+ transfers got narked) to the IRS after a subpoena. \n\nI'll skip two on the list to get to [HitBTC](hitbtc.com) who has a really comprehensive collection of coins and an ICO trading platform.\n\n---\n\nAside from these popular exchanges you should know about [Shapeshift](shapeshift.io), [Changelly](changelly.com), and [Evercoin](evercoin.com).\nThese trade out of your personal wallets in order to avoid counterparty risk.\nIf an exchange gets hacked you will loose a percentage of your holdings. Beware.\n\nAlso, many platforms now offer distributed exchange (Dex) for their own custom tokens, such as Waves and Bitshares.\n\n---\n\nThe third generation of exchange tech is coming on line as we speak.\nBitcoin's new Lightning Network makes \"Atomic Swapping\" possible for all segwit activated coins, and many ERC20 tokens as well.\nWhen this becomes accessible to the mainstream it will pose a serious problem to centralized exchanges, but we are still a few months away. [Altcoin.io](altcoin.io) has a testnet online as of last week.\n\n---\n\n#Wallets\n\nSince we haven't had a major exchange hack in a while people don't find out about wallets as quickly as they used to.\nBut, wallet tech is developing at a speed consummate to every other aspect of the crypto space.\n\nHardware wallets are still the best option for security, other than paper wallets. \n[Trezor](trezor.io) and [Ledger}(https://www.ledgerwallet.com/) are the most popular.\n\n[Jaxx](jaxx.io) is to my knowledge the first secure and popular multicurrency phone wallet.\n[Coinomi](https://coinomi.com/) has a very different selection of coins focusing more on pow coins and less on ERC20.\nSamourai wallet is supposed to be a good privacy focused phone wallet, but I don't understand why they need so many permissions and I've not looked into it enough to recommend them.\n\n#(Coin Market Cap)[https://coinmarketcap.com/all/views/all/)\n\nHere you will find almost everything you need to discover, assess, and keep tabs on new coins and tokens.\nBuy low and sell high isn't just for price. If you want to make the most of you money you also want to buy low marketcap. Sounds good, right?\nNot so fast! \nOnce you consider that they have a supply of only 59k coins a market cap of only 122m may be easy to collect from people who just see the volatility and want to make easy money on day trading without ever looking into the coin...
