Teniendo claro el conocimiento básico acerca de los Tiristores, podemos diseñar circuitos con mayor eficiencia, cabe destacar que estos dispositivos pertenecen a la familia de los semiconductores de varias capas, además, presentan una acción de conmutación biestable, debido a su inherente realimentación regenerativa. Los tiristores son como una especie de interruptores, abre y cierra de manera eléctrica, pero hay algo que los diferencia de los transistores. Este puede trabajar con corrientes de unos 100 amperios, cuando el trasistor sólo trabaja con corrientes que rondan los micro y los mili amperios. \n\nAdemás, los tiristores son conocidos tambien por ser componentes semiconductores con dos estados estables cuyo funcionamiento se basa en la realimentación regenerativa de una estructura PNPN. El TRIAC o también conocido como el DIAC, posee una terminal de compuerta para controlar las condiciones de encendido del dispositivo bilateral en cualquier dirección. Normalmente los tiristores son dispositivos usados en diseños donde hay corrientes o voltajes muy elevados. También se suelen usar para controlar corriente alterna donde el cambio de polaridad de la corriente revierte en la conexión o desconexión del dispositivo. \n\nEl tiristor también se puede usar como elemento de control en controladores accionados por ángulo de fase, esto es una modulación por ancho de pulso para limitar la tensión en corriente alterna. En circuitos digitales también se pueden encontrar tiristores como fuente de energía o potencial, de forma que pueden ser usados como interruptores automáticos magneto-térmicos, es decir, pueden interrumpir un circuito eléctrico, abriéndolo, cuando la intensidad que circula por él se excede de un determinado valor. A comienzo de los 70’s se usaron los tiristores para estabilizar el flujo de tensión de entrada de los receptores de televisión en color. Se suelen usar para controlar la rectificación en corriente alterna, es decir, para transformar esta corriente alterna en corriente continua (siendo en este punto los tiristores onduladores o inversores), para la realización de conmutaciones de baja potencia en circuitos electrónicos. \n\nInclusive, los tiristores también se usaron en el área de la fotografía, su primer uso en este campo se dio en los años 80’s. cuando un flash era disparado, este perdía toda su carga y había que esperar unos 10s aproximadamente para que se volviera a cargar y así poder tomar la siguiente fotografía.
