| title | Decentralised Think-Tank |
| body | Some very brief thoughts on decentralisation and think-tanks. I'm a big proponent of free speech and I've found that often there's a lack of diverse opinion represented in the media and university. I recently began a platform (www.kazingram.com) that attempts to solve some of this problem by seeking to fairly represent both sides of debate, but I wanted a place where people could organically discuss ideas on a high level. Over the past year and a bit, I've started to see the benefits of decentralisation. So, it made me wonder whether it would be possible to have something like a think-tank that is decentralised, where the level of discussion is high but at the same time not exclusive. I say this because I find that places that allow for a (somewhat) free discussion, the discussions often lead to a shouting match or name calling. Prime examples of this being twitter and facebook. Of course, this is not to say that all discussions that take place on those platforms are like that. Back to the decentralised think-tank. This decentralised think-tank will work on all areas of human knowledge--science, philosophy, history, law, policy, and et al. The only limitation here is the human mind. Imagine then this platform where you have access to cutting-edge research (if you're a big physics person), or you're discussing with a scholar on their research, or you can get involve in a topic you're interested in and at the end of the month or year this group puts together a conference on developments and improvements within the conversation--all self-funded with no external funding like the government et al. Or, say, there is a brilliant scholar who you think is doing tremendous work but their time, efforts, and skill put into their speciality does not correlate to with their book sale and grants they receive. Imagine that you're both part of this de-centralised think-tank. You could personally fund their research and know that you won't be scammed and will get your moneny's worth. (Something like ICOs) This is would something like a smart contract. This decentralised think-tank (DTT) would be able to influence public-policy by the fact that many of a nation's citizens will be part of the think-tank. Not only that, this DTT would be immutable to human corruption and bias "idea" curation since no one person controls the feeds, groups, the funding, discussions. So I'm experimenting this on LinkedIn groups to see if there are people on LinkedIn (the business world) who'd be interested. If you're on linkedin it's called (De)Centre for Rational Dialogue. If you have thoughts or questions, please let me know! |

| title | What to Cook During Exam week (not a philosophy post) |
| body | It's tough finding time to cook when you have exams to write, friends to hangout with, 15 page essays to write. And add to all that figuring out what to cook! It's like juggling chainsaws. Mess up and, zip, your hand is gone. When I was in university, and especially during exam week, I had to figure out cheap, healthy?, and filling meals. The three meals below can be made by a ten-year old who can follow instructions. What you need are some basic spices, and some pots and pan. The first is the simplest one. Noodles. Or Ramen as is called here in Canada. When grocery shopping make sure to NOT buy Mr. Noodles. It's the worst noodle out there. https://images.pexels.com/photos/698549/pexels-photo-698549.jpeg?w=940&h=650&auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb My friend and I found this out the hard way. We stayed on campus during our first Christmas break (reason being it was too expensive to fly to our family) and since we were on a tight budget we bought a box of Mr. Noodles. And for the next 20 or so days that's all we had breakfast, lunch, and dinner. By the end of it, my throat was felt like it had layers of wax. Disgusting. So don't do that first of all. Second, buy better noodles if you are planning on doing it. Suggestions are: Korean noodles (Nonghim Shin Ramyun, Chapagetti, Samyeng Ramen); Thai noodles (Mama noodles, especially, shrimp flavor); Indian noodles (Top Ramen, Maggi, Wai Wai). You'll find them in any major grocery stores. To make them you need a pan and some water. Boil water, add the noodle and spices that come with it. Wait for 5-7 minutes and your noodles are ready. If don't have a stove, then you just need boiling water. Do the same thing, but wait a little longer for the noodles to cook. The second is rice. Rice goes with almost anything. It's cheap. You can buy eight kilos for $10 or so. Cooking rice can be daunting especially if you've never cooked rice or had rice before. https://images.pexels.com/photos/674574/pexels-photo-674574.jpeg?w=940&h=650&auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb What you first need is a pot. Put how much ever rice you want to eat into the pot, but I'd suggest starting with 1/2 cups (just use your drinking cup to measure). Fill the pot up with water until it is an inch and bit above the rice. This is the perfect amount of water. It makes sure that the rice is cooked but not overly sticky or soggy, or too dry. Then turn up the stove to medium heat and it should take 20-25 minutes to cook, if you have a lid on it. The third is chicken. Chicken is a great deal! Lots of protein, cheap, and very versatile to cook with. The easiest recipe is stir-fry without the veggies (if you have veggies even better). https://images.pexels.com/photos/262973/pexels-photo-262973.jpeg?w=940&h=650&auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb So buy yourself a pound or so of boneless chicken breast, some garlic and ginger. You'll need a frying pan for this, if you don't have one use a pot. Cut up the breast into slices just slightly bigger than MacDonald fries. Season it with salt and pepper. Cut up a few cloves of garlic. Peel half an inch of ginger and chop it up. Heat up the pan (medium-high flame), then add the oil. Add the garlic and ginger into the pan. Cook until they begin to brown (if you have chilli flakes add it now), then add the chicken slices. Stir it around for four minutes. (If you have veggies add 'em now). Then add a spoon-full of your soya sauce. Stir some more. Turn down flame to medium for six-to-ten minutes and boom you're done. Three cheap and easy meals to help you through your exam week. |

I study philosophy, but I'm still trying to figure at what point I become a "philosopher". Am I a "philosopher" only after I finish my phD, or after my first journal article is published, or once I start graduate school? If you have thoughts on this, let me know. I'm the editor and founder of Kazingram Magazine (the link in my profile). At Kazingram we love ideas that are well argued. And one reason, I wanted to join the STEEMIT community was to discuss ideas rationally in the pursuit of truth. I'll be writing philosophical things in the area of ethics, philosophy of religion, and metaphysics. Finally, this is me being caught in a bow and arrow move during an in-house Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament. |

| title | Rowe: The fallacy the Cosmological Argument doesn't commit |
| body | William L. Rowe in his paper, "The Cosmological Argument," makes the point that the proponent of the cosmological argument (CA) does not commit the fallacy of composition as is often assumed. The CA Rowe is concerned with is the argument from dependency or contingency of being to a necessary being. Rowe is not defending the CA but rather he is clarifying what the argument is. (To be sure, Rowe is not a theist; I think he considers himself an agnostic). https://static.pexels.com/photos/110854/pexels-photo-110854.jpeg Often the criticism is that this CA makes an invalid inference. Going from 'all dependent beings of a collection have an explanation for their existence' to 'the collection of dependent beings has an explanation for its existence'. Thus committing a fallacy. This inference, Rowe argues, is not made by proponents of the CA. Instead the argument relies on the Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR), which is that every existing being has a reason for its existence either within itself or in another. Given the PSR then, a collection of dependent beings must have an explanation for its existence. Now, this is very different from committing a fallacy of composition. Rowe goes on to challenge the PSR and thinks that it doesn't work, even if it is modified (which he does, thrice), implying that since PSR fails so too does the CA. I'm not convinced that PSR doesn't work, but it is worth the read. |

| title | Rowe: The fallacy the Cosmological Argument doesn't commit |
| body | William L. Often the criticism is that this CA makes an invalid inference. I'm not convinced that PSR doesn't work, but it is worth the read. |

| title | As a Pro-Lifer Should I Take My Friend to an Abortion Clinic? |
| body | Yesterday, I was asked if I, as a pro-lifer, would drive a friend to an abortion clinic. Or whether I'd be willing to lose a friend over this. I'd never thought about it, but immediately, two questions crossed my mind: first, do I have a duty as a friend to take them to the clinic? Second, if I took her isn't that a form of approval and wouldn't that go against my belief that abortion is wrong? Now, as a friend, I'm under certain obligations to not harm my friend, gossip about them, steal their car, etc. But I'm under no duty to comply to any of my friend's requests, whatever they may be. So I don't have to pick them up from their late night escapade or take them to the grocery store; whatever my friend asks, I'm not obligated to do it. Of course, if I wanted to, I can—though that should only be when there is no moral conflict or when the request is not immoral. There are cases where the requests are not in moral conflict but are immoral. Imagine you're an Aryan back in 1940 Germany. You know exactly what is going on in the concentration camps: people are being gassed by the 1000s. And you're completely against the Nazis and the concentration camps. One day, your friend, Bitler, an SS officer, shows up at the door asking you to drive him and a 14-year-old Jewish girl to the camp. Bitler tells you that the girl will be gassed within an hour of arriving at the camp--so, no need to worry about her suffering due to starvation, fatigue, or diseases. And once the girl is dead, then you and Bitler can go home. What should you do? The answer is you shouldn't drive Bitler to the camp. You should instead try to convince him of the immorality of his actions. Or you can help the girl escape. None of them is mutually exclusive. There is no moral conflict between helping your friend and helping your friend kill another human being. The right thing to do, ipso facto, is not to drive him to the camp in order to save the girl's life. Bilter's request is immoral, hence any submission on your part will make you guilty of the 14-year-old girl's death. And in one sense, if you drove to the camp, you would be approving of the Nazi's actions and it would go against your belief that the camps are committing wrongful actions daily. It would be a different situation if you didn't have knowledge of the surrounding circumstances, but you do. And I bet most people would be willing to lose Bitler as a friend. Some might even think that it's impossible to remain friends with someone who willingly subjects himself into carrying out evil acts. Similarly, then, in the case of driving your friend to an abortion clinic, there is no moral conflict between that of helping your friend and that of helping your friend kill another human if the foetus at whatever stage is an innocent human being. There's a conflict only if the two options are morally equivalent, which they aren't. The fact is at conception a new organism is created, which is wholly distinct from the sperm and egg. And there's difficulty in a drawing line between what is human and what is not from conception till death by old age. Even with the consideration of the primitive streak appearing around 14 days after conception, it cannot be established that the embryo is not human. More specifically, it cannot be shown that there is not an individual human being: that what is born nine months later is the same one that has developed over the nine months. So since embryos are members of the species homo sapiens whose paradigmatic members are capable of free will and of purposely pursuing the good given that they are allowed to develop or sober-up, they have a right to life. Hence, abortion is immoral because it is the intentional killing of an innocent human being. The right thing to do is not take my friend to the abortion clinic. Her request--to be driven to the clinic to have an abortion--is wrong, to begin with. But suppose someone says, as if often by feminists of all stripes, that there's a moral conflict between my friend's right to her body and the foetus' right to life. And that her right to control her body outweighs the foetus' rights. Thus, it is permissible to abort the foetus even if granted that it was an innocent human being. Well, for one thing, the foetus is not one of my friend's bodily parts like her heart or stomach. It is a distinct living human organism. So she can't abort solely by appealing to her right to do as she pleases with her body since the foetus is not a bodily part. You can't kill an infant just because you're currently holding her at this moment. That would be murder. But what if my friend's reason was that the foetus was an aggressor, could she kill it? No, not any more than Bilter can kill the girl because he has to feed her once a day and she takes up space in the car. It is never permissible to intentionally kill an innocent human being under any circumstances at any point of development. So, yesterday, what my answer should have been was that I wouldn't take my friend to the abortion clinic any more than I would help Bitler take the life of a 14-year-old Jewish girl. I'd be willing to lose a friend over this, but I wouldn't stop trying to convince her that her action is wrong. What do you think? Do you agree? |
