      "title": "THE THAI ISLAND THAT REMAINS PARADISE",
      "body": "<html>\n<p>It all started with two French girls. It was 2006, and I was five months into my first round-the-world trip. I’d arrived in Thailand two weeks before, run into a friend, and jetted off to Ko Phi Phi, a place I didn’t enjoy. Another friend emailed me about a beautiful, out-of-the-way, hidden island near the Malaysian border called Ko Lipe and suggested I come. It sounded perfect. “I’ll be right there,” I replied.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>But then I ran into those beautiful French girls with their seductive accents.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>A few nights before, I’d met them in one of the many bars on the island. I saw them again on the ferry back to the mainland; they were heading to Ko Lanta. I’d never heard of it, but when they invited me to come along, I put my Ko Lipe plans on hold and joined them.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>I can never say no to a French accent.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Arriving at Ko Lanta, we found ourselves on an island paradise that has since become one of my favorite places in Thailand.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Back in 2006, the island was rustic. It had few resorts, restaurants, or bars, and most bungalows had only cold water and fans. Air conditioning and hot water were a luxury. Even on its most touristy beach during high season, there was hardly a soul around. A bar was considered busy if it had more than five people in it. We spent four days biking the island, lying on the beach, gorging on cheap seafood, and watching some of the most unbelievable sunsets of my life.</p>\n<p><img src=\"http://media.nomadicmatt.com/kolanta3.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"400\"/></p>\n<p><img src=\"http://media.nomadicmatt.com/kolanta2.jpg\" width=\"674\" height=\"400\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Ko Lanta was paradise. A beautiful, seemingly unknown place located in a region known as the epicenter of Thailand tourism. How everyone managed to miss this paradise with its long and wide white sand beaches, cheap food, and sunsets (the island faces west) boggled my mind.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>But everyone’s loss was my gain, and those four days left a deep impression on me.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>When I returned to Ko Lanta in 2009, I was nervous. Three years had passed. That’s a long time in Thailand. Development happens like a sandstorm, and Ko Lanta’s name had been coming up more often on websites and among travelers. I feared the worst: my tiny little beach bungalows replaced by resorts and those quiet beaches filled with bars and overpriced restaurants. Gone would be the days of $6 bungalows.</p>\n<p><img src=\"http://media.nomadicmatt.com/kolanta6.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"400\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>I stepped off the ferry, took a depth breath, and…exhaled a huge sigh of relief. Yes, prices were higher, there were more people, and some resorts had popped up, but the low-key, relaxed nature of the island remained intact. The beaches hadn’t been overdeveloped, there wasn’t trash everywhere, it was still easy to get most of the beach to yourself, and cheap bungalows still existed.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Fast forward to February 2014 when I took my Thailand tour group to Ko Lanta. With its white sand beaches, delicious seafood, plethora of activities, and relaxed atmosphere, it was the perfect way to end the tour.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>But again I held my breath.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>It had again been years since I was last on the island, and even though recent pictures I’d seen illustrated that the island was still beautiful, I was worried nonetheless.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>But I was worried for nothing.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>The island was still paradise and, while more developed than before — with a few more high-end resorts, international restaurants, and higher prices — it still offered seclusion and serenity.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><img src=\"http://media.nomadicmatt.com/kolanta4.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"400\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Ko Lanta seems to buck every trend in tourism in Thailand. Despite its growing popularity, it hasn’t been overdeveloped like every other island in the country. There’s a lot of potential here, and with its beautiful beaches and sunsets, this place could easily become the next Ko Samui, Krabi, or Phuket.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>But it hasn’t.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>And that’s good for us. Uncontrolled development has ruined many islands in Thailand, but Ko Lanta has remained paradise for a few reasons. It’s pretty hard work to get there with the car ferries. Only so many people can be brought over at once. The government has focused its efforts on developing other parts of the region, and the local, tight-knit community has been quite coordinated in how they want the island to develop. This community collaboration (rare in Thailand) has allowed it to avoid the free-for-all development fate of other Thai islands.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><img src=\"http://media.nomadicmatt.com/kolanta5.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"400\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>I’m unsure how long this will last, especially as construction of a bridge from the mainland finishes. In Thailand, nothing is ever certain. Your island paradise could turn into your island hell within the span of a single season.</p>\n<p>However, for now, Ko Lanta remains one of the best islands in Thailand to visit and my island paradise.</p>\n<p>One day, I’ll find those two French girls and thank them for bringing me here all those years ago.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n</html>",

      "body": "The Firefox browser has had a rough go in the last few years.\n\nThe number of people using Mozilla's browser has dwindled as the world has embraced Google's Chrome and started using phones where Firefox has a small presence. In the last two years, Firefox's worldwide market share has dropped from 13 percent to 8 percent, according to analytics firm StatCounter.\n\nThe next update to Firefox, however, represents the first step in Mozilla's long-term plan to get you using its web browser once again. It hopes to rekindle the interest and influence it claimed a decade ago by revamping its core, which could make complex websites like Facebook snappier but make it more difficult for attackers to launch attacks over the web.\n\nFirst, though, Mozilla has some work to do.\n\nWith its initial step, announced Tuesday, Mozilla replaced one small part of Firefox with a new component written in Rust, an open-source programming language it invented. That first small change should arrive when Firefox 48 ships in August. In the long run, though, Mozilla plans to rebuild several parts of the Firefox core using Rust through a project called Servo.\n\nInventing new programming languages is fashionable among tech companies hoping to help programmers -- and themselves. Google's Go is designed to improve the company's core services, and Apple's Swift is geared to make it easier to build apps for Macs and iPhones.\n\n\nBut getting new programming languages to catch on widely is tough. For every success, like the Java language invented at Sun Microsystems and now managed by Oracle, there are lots that fizzle, like Sun's Fortress and Google's Dart. Programming languages change much more slowly than the rest of the tech industry. C and C++, the languages that Rust is designed to outdo, are decades old and deeply embedded.\n\nMozilla has won some fans with Rust. Online storage company Dropbox and network company OpenDNS are both using Rust in internal software projects. However, Mozilla's Firefox is the highest-profile effort involving Rust so far. Firefox's first Rust-built element, which handles video and audio files, runs as fast as the C++ component it replaces but isn't susceptible to memory problems that can result in security vulnerabilities, said Dave Herman, director of strategy at Mozilla Research.\n\nRust-built components will gradually replace more of Firefox, according to the nonprofit organization's plans. Those who want to try the technology can use a very rough Servo-based browser, though Mozilla cautions that it's not tested enough yet to be trusted with sensitive jobs like online banking.",

It was also the biggest day ever for Amazon device sales globally.\n\nThe company's release didn't offer specific comparisons to Cyber Monday or Black Friday sales, which kick off the year-end holiday spending blitz, but a spokesperson confirmed that the latest Prime Day surpassed all prior single-day sales for Amazon. Prime Day last year outpaced Black Friday sales, but Cyber Monday historically has remained Amazon's biggest sales day of the year.\n\n\"After yesterday's results, we'll definitely be doing this again,\" Greg Greeley, vice president of Amazon Prime worldwide, said in a statement.\n\nIt speaks volumes about Amazon's influence and reach in the retail world that the company could get people spending on a summer day when they're not usually conditioned to look for sales. Also, Prime Day becoming the company's biggest sales day yet shows how powerful Prime membership is for the company, since the sale was only available for people who pay $99 annually for the loyalty program.\n\nSigning up for Amazon Prime gets people more than just shopping perks and free shipping. Over time, the company has widened the scope of the program to include services like streaming video and music, upping the ante for powerhouses ranging from Apple to Netflix and Walmart. Instead of a screen confirming the digital monster is mine, I get a white Poke ball-like icon in the top left-hand corner that spins and spins and spins.\n\nLater that day, I encounter two men taking turns posing for photos next to a Pokemon, which is superimposed on their phone's screen, layered on top of the real-world background caught by the camera. I ask if they've had problems actually catching the creature, and they nod.\n\nIt's the latest mobile equivalent of the Mac \"spinning wheel of death\" or the Windows hourglass. This one's inside Pokemon Go.\n\nPokemon Go, released last week, is already a cultural phenomenon. It has garnered more users than Tinder and is closing in on Twitter. Its success added $7.5 billion to previously irrelevant Nintendo's market value in just two days. Heck, even the decades-old Pokemon theme now dominates Spotify.\n\nThe concept behind the game, which turns people into Pokemon trainers using their phones to hunt for digital creatures in the real world, is certainly strong.\n\nBut the undercurrent to all it's success is that execution is weak.\n\nServer issues have kept folks staring at that spinning ball, and the game continually crashes. Nintendo and developer Niantic have struggled to keep up with demand.\n\nSo take this as a warning to Nintendo and Niantic. These kinds of early hiccups bode poorly for the longevity of Pokemon Go. The game benefits from a wave of curiosity, nostalgia and a genuinely unique mobile experience. But these problems, as well as headlines that the game can access more of your Google account than you would like, could quickly sour gamers.\n\nAnd this isn't like Nintendo's traditional console business, where gamers plunk down money for a physical system and game. Pokemon Go is free to download, and gamers have little investment or reason to stick around.\n\nJust ask Rovio, the company behind the Angry Birds games. The once-killer app for the iPhone is virtually forgotten as a game and lives on as a movie instead. The App Store is littered with high-flying apps that quickly falter. Ingress, the augmented reality mobile game from Niantic that Pokemon was based on, was a flash in the pan. People, after all, have short attention spans, and the next hot app is always around the corner. Just like Pokemon Go, that next hot app will likely be free.\n\n\"It's had by far the fastest rise of any game, but it's building off nostalgia from those who played other versions earlier in life, and it's also a fairly time-intensive pursuit,\" said Jan Dawson, an analyst at Jackdaw Research. \"It's hard to imagine that being sustainable, especially once we get past the summer and people's lives get busier again.\"\n\n\nTechnical glitches kneecapped the prospects for another game riding on a wave of nostalgia. Remember the debut of Simcity in 2013? The highly anticipated reboot of the classic game fizzled after Electronics Arts failed to provide the necessary server support, leaving people disconnected and unable to play.\n\nNintendo and Niantic weren't available for comment. But to its credit, Niantic told Business Insider that it was delaying the global rollout of the game until it got a handle on the demand.\n\nThe good news is it's not doom and gloom just yet.
