How do trading markets work? Youtube had been my number one source of specialist knowledge for maybe 2 years. I’d been watching videos on Philosophy, Spirituality, and Psychology. If you don’t have money, adjusting your spirituality is a great way to survive the world a bit better. So naturally, to understand Crypto, I turn to Youtube. And it is here on Youtube that I discover what I call Crypto Bros.\n\nThey start their videos with “Whats Up guys!!” and end their videos with a Rap style “Peace!” only it’s not quite pronounced “Peece” though, more like “Peeeooce” somehow combining the “ee” and “oo” vowels in a way, that took me days to describe. They vary from the very cool, calm market analysing guys, to the life advice guys, to the ADHD/Bipolar over excited dudes, that I just cannot handle. No matter how good their advice is. It’s innocently macho, females are underrepresented, but it reflects the Wild West enthusiasm towards Cryptocurrency. It reminds me of the early 1994 days of the internet. We’ve just moved from Bulletin Board Systems to Netspace. The possibilities are amazing, uncharted and seemingly infinite.\n\nTruth is, they saved my life, they gave me ideas, helped me understand the markets, taught me some technical analysis, encouraged me to buy a hardware wallet, taught me about new coins… and then I found politics.",

      "body": "Funnily enough, after going from living on the bare bones of my arse, to having $150,000 dollars worth of ethereum available to me, my chief concern was one of identity. Who the fuck was I? I did not want anyone to know. My beloved friends around me also struggled to make ends meet. I feared dealing with their jealousy, and envy, feared that they would drag up old favours that I’d forgotten, feared that they would start hitting me up for loans. And none of my music scene friends knew what the hell Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Cryptocurrencies were. It was a strange place. I had to keep my head together, not go on any mad spending sprees, not tell anyone, and keep working, not because I needed the money, but to maintain a sense of normality and stability.\n\nThe problem was, If I wasn’t this broke arse musician, trying to build Melbournes music scene to the point where it could offer a good living to myself and others, then who the fuck was I? If I didn’t need to work for a living, then who was I. It was clear I was now in a whole new world. And I did not know another soul who had experienced such a radical transition. I knew people who’d been well off for their whole lives. I knew people who had struggled their whole lives. But few have made a single, savvy, investment decision that made 1000% returns. Not enough that I could buy a big house, and never work again, but enough to offer a path out.\n\nThe closest I had was my friend JY who owned the bar I worked in. He’d sold his share of an ad agency for an undisclosed possibly 7 figure sum. He’d traded stocks, betted horses, bought and sold property. I sought his advice, because I didn’t know who I was, I had an identity issue, and when I met him for lunch (my treat for the first time) and explained my situation, he told me to invest in bricks and mortar… property. not the advice I was after, but good advice nonetheless. A couple of days later, I think he’d realised my spiritual issue. That I needed to still be something to my community. Not disappear up my own arse playing the markets every day.",

      "body": "On the 5th of August 2014 I bought 400 ETH in the Ethereal pre-sale. Earlier that year I’d read an interview with Ethereum’s creator Vitalik Buterin, in Wired magazine. While reading the article I realised that the idea of doing contracts on a blockchain was a good one. I’d seen Bitcoin rise from a crazy idea 5 years before, to a viable form of nerd money. But never bought in. So when the pre-sale came along. I got $150 (AUD) together (what I could afford at the time), bought bitcoin via a broker by sending a bank cheque (seems so primitive now, seemed so underground and risky then.), and bought some ETH in the pre-sale. I didn’t know what would happen. I knew it would grow, I didn’t know by how much, I recorded my password, and then forgot about it, and put my thoughts elsewhere. I’d made many good predictions about ideas that take off, but this was the first time I’d laid money on it.\n\nEvery now and then over the next months I would check on CoinGecko what my ETH was worth. When my investment went up to $5000 I decided to try to access my wallet. I’d downloaded “Ethereum Wallet” A full node wallet still under development. I put in my wallet (public key), put in my password and received a “Wrong Password” error. I was shocked, humbled, worried. 18 years of being a computer tech, and I knew how to record a password. Especially when it came to financial matters. It didn’t makes sense. I made enquiries into password recovery, and then I just let it go. In reality it was $150 down the tubes. A night out. The rest was in my head. A missed opportunity. Let it go, don’t get bitter. Keep living from job to job. Fixing computers, mixing bands in bars, paying rent, cutting costs, maximising income. Tolerating unpleasant people, and situations. Every $10 counted.\n\nOver the next couple of months, I would occasionally try to sort out the password issue.\n\nAnd then earlier this year, I got a message from one of my IT clients asking about VPNs.He wanted to access Coinbase. Coinbase is geo blocked in Australia, and you need a VPN to buy and sell on it. We had a conversation about Crypto, I told him I had 400 ETH that I couldn’t get access to. He told me that it was now worth $120000. I gulped. Couldn’t believe it. As it was going up he would tease me with updates about the growing funds that I could not access.\n\nBut an idea had grown in my mind. What if I didn’t have the wrong password? What if it was just that stupid beta software. Well I downloaded a newer version. That version would error, and error, and error, until I realised I needed to let it download the entire 35GB Ethereal blockchain. I left my laptop running for days to download the entire chain. I tried again, it accepted my password. I had access to 400 ETH!! But the next issue was that stupid Wallet couldn't let me send. By the time I had accessed it it was early June. Ethereum was about to peak!!\n\nOver the next couple of weeks I started experimenting with how it worked. I discovered myethereumwallet.com and could now access my wallet without having to download the full blockchain. I experimented with moving my ETH around, sending it to exchanges, sending it to other wallets, making trades, turning it into FIAT so I could buy a holiday. I had roughly $150000AUD of ethereum. I was no longer living hand to mouth. I literally no longer knew myself. I could buy a fancy car if I wanted. All sorts of stuff. But what I really wanted was to never live on the bones of my arse again. Long term financial security and comfort was what i wanted. What I was about to discover in July though was that what goes up, must come down. TBC",
