      "body": "Life in the African bush has a certain stigma attached to it. Sunrise and sunsets, giraffe waltzing through the thickets, impala bouncing across the road, and zebra calling as the sun drops. \nThere is another side to it too though. Maybe a darker side. The hidden side. The side a tourist doesn't always see. \nInter-predatory competition. We've all seen it on tv, usually between lions and hyenas. But they aren't the only ones squabbling out there. The public seem ok with that battle, as more often than not the lions win, and there aren't too many tears from most people when it all goes down. \nBut... it's not only lions and hyena who fight. We have lost 12 cheetah  in the last few years, mostly as a result of lions (and some fighting amongst themselves), so it was with great excitement as we released a young female onto the reserve, who will hopefully find the lone male survivor, and then hopefully we will begin to see an increase in numbers as the new cubs learn from their lion-wise parents which felines to avoid. \nIt's early days, but it's nature, and things don't always go as planned. It's an on going struggle, and it's desperate times! \n\nBut it's not all doom and gloom, there are patches of light, streams of hope, shining through the clouds of despair. This young lady recently had a son, who is growing up well, and will no doubt, in time, charge me when he sees me driving by, as his father did before him. It's in their nature.       "body": "It's normally about 40 degrees at this time of the year, but today is a lot cooler. There are clouds in the sky, very low, and throughout the day so far there has been a light rain. \nIt's one of those days, where a comfortable couch, good company, and a movie is all that is needed.       "body": "We have many visitors, from far and wide. Some are locals who enjoy spending time in nature, listening to the morning chorus as the birds celebrate the rising of the sun breaking the dark, and some are from as far afield as Scandinavia or Australia, who usually cannot wait to see lions chasing a wildebeest across the plains. \n\nOf the many exciting things we get to see it here, one thing always seems to get the \"wow\" going amongst the guests, no matter where they are from. \n\n![IMG_1713.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQdNPmXYyjrXS853NfLPy36qpKjFXZbfg3CongMcx3yF2/IMG_1713.jpg)\n\nWhen we escort guests back to their rooms after dinner (there are no fences around the lodge, and all sorts of animals roam through the lodge), we are often asked what we come across on the pathways as we walk, but once they see the African sky at night, all the worry of bumping into a lion or buffalo seems to fade away, and we often just stand in awe as we stare at the numberless lights twinkling in the sky above. It's very different to the Northern night sky, and even Africans are surprised at how many stars are visible when you're far from the cities.\n\nA favourite thing to do for me is spend time with guests who are interested in photography, and try to get a few pictures of that night sky, and watch the sense of pride come over them as they see the photos they can get.       "body": "As a young boy I would watch many animated movies, and one of my favourite shows had animals as the characters. Foxes, bears, birds, all sorts of animals talking and singing and dancing. There were good guys and there were bad guys, and some of the bad guys were portrayed by vultures. Clumsy, incompetent and slow, they were quite charming though. However, vultures have always seemed to have a negative stigma surrounding them for some reason. Perhaps because they sit in the shadows, waiting for death? Perhaps because they only scavenge when other, more handsome animals have left a kill with full bellies? Who knows...but they seem to be typecast as a specific type of character.\n\nBut are they really the bad guys they're portrayed to be? \n![IMG_9884.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQxJWBwjB9cd2GaG7zbVHKFeV5MTqY3cJmQxNKGZ4fSux/IMG_9884.jpg)\n\nWhat is the role of the vulture anyway? \nVultures do not hunt live prey, but instead scavenge from carcasses, and as a result will clean up what would otherwise rot, spreading disease and death. A vultures digestive system is very strong. The acid in their stomachs is highly corrosive, facilitating the digestion of decomposing carcasses infected with diseases such as anthrax, cholera, botulinum toxin, and rabies that would be lethal to other scavengers. Unfortunately, it is not strong enough to withstand some of the poisons farmers put out to deal with other scavengers, and this has has a huge impact on the numbers of these birds over the past few years.       "body": "As a young boy I would watch many animated movies, and one of my favourite shows had animals as the characters. Foxes, bears, birds, all sorts of animals talking and singing and dancing. There were good guys and there were bad guys, and some of the bad guys were portrayed by vultures. Clumsy, incompetent and slow, they were quite charming though. However, vultures have always seemed to have a negative stigma surrounding them for some reason. Perhaps because they sit in the shadows, waiting for death? Perhaps because they only scavenge when other, more handsome animals have left a kill with full bellies? Who knows...but they seem to be typecast as a specific type of character.\n\nBut are they really the bad guys they're portrayed to be? \n![IMG_9884.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQxJWBwjB9cd2GaG7zbVHKFeV5MTqY3cJmQxNKGZ4fSux/IMG_9884.jpg)\n\nWhat is the role of the vulture anyway? \nVultures do not hunt live prey, but instead scavenge from carcasses, and as a result will clean up what would otherwise rot, spreading disease and death. A vultures digestive system is very strong. The acid in their stomachs is highly corrosive, facilitating the digestion of decomposing carcasses infected with diseases such as anthrax, cholera, botulinum toxin, and rabies that would be lethal to other scavengers. Unfortunately, it is not strong enough to withstand some of the poisons farmers put out to deal with other scavengers, and this has has a huge impact on the numbers of these birds over the past few years.
