texnukepublished a new post: creating-your-own-personal-strategic-plan-the-mission
| author | texnuke |
| body | As a long-term corporate executive, I’ve been involved in the generation of many strategic plans, and frankly, I’m a believer. Properly done, the strategic plan provides clarity and focus to an endeavor, and can be the basis to define meaningful measures and milestones to accurately measure progress towards success. More than once a strategic plan has allowed me to achieve much more than I initially thought possible and it is very satisfying to look back and say “Wow! We really did what we said we were going to.” So it’s no surprise that awhile back I started wondering why individuals didn’t create strategic plans for themselves, to help focus and guide them in achieving what they want out of life. And so I created one for myself. I’m not going to bore you with all of the details, although I will share some along the way as I lead you through the process for yourself. But I will say it produced marvelous results and I’m happier now than I’ve ever been. So I’d like to help you do the same. Creating a good strategic plan takes some time and effort, though, so I’m not going to cover it all in one post. Rather I will break it down into a few individual steps. This first one will focus on what a strategic plan will provide for you, what are the key elements, and what you need to do to complete the first one, The Mission. First, let’s answer the key question: why bother? People typically don’t have difficulty filling their time. In fact, I noticed long ago that if you hired someone, but did not assign to them specific duties (or did not assign them sufficient duties to fully occupy their time), they would create activities to fill their time (like I’m doing now!). And, in fact, everyone does this. We will always create something to occupy our attention (even if it’s just staring at a computer or watching tv). However, the question is whether the activities we are doing are producing the outcomes we desire. Furthermore, when we are facing an important decision on whether to do something different (like take a new job or move to a new location), how do we know what’s the right thing to do? In fact, at an even more basic level, how do you know whether or not you’re successful? I’ve never met someone (yet) who told me they were a failure, but few seem happy with where they’re at and surely if you’re successful, you must be happy! A good strategic plan will help you with this. It will provide clarity on what you should be doing and whether or not what you’re doing is producing the results you desire. And it will allow you to measure how you’ve progressed and grown along the way. So what goes in the strategic plan? It can be broken into 4 parts: 1. The Mission – What you do. 2. The Vision – Where you want to be 3. Success measures – How do you objectively measure your progress towards The Vision 4. Strategies – What actions are you going to take that you expect will directly impact the success measures. Now you can find a lot of different books and theories on strategic plans, but in my opinion, if it doesn’t at least have the 4 elements above, it will not have the full functionality it needs. And done correctly this plan will be something you use ALL THE TIME, so you want it to fully meet your needs. So let’s start with The Mission. It sounds simple enough, it’s just what you do, which is why most companies don’t spend a lot of time thinking about the proper definition of The Mission. But it actually is the most important piece of your strategic plan because it is the only part that is going to be a constraint. Your Mission is going to define what you do, and by inference, what you should not be doing. Defined too broadly it is not going to help in your decision making (e.g., if your mission is just to “Make Money”, how do you know whether you should be a Doctor or an Investment Banker?). Defined too narrowly, it is going to be overly limiting (if your mission 30 years ago was to program FORTRAN, what the heck would you be doing now?). And your Mission should be energizing…because if it is correct it will go to who you truly are. In many ways we define ourselves by what we do…what do YOU do? So my Mission is “To improve the lives of others.” I know, sounds like altruistic hogwash. But it actually came out of me analyzing what was driving some of my more self-destructive behaviors (like continually giving away more money than I was making). Once I was able to figure out what I was really trying to do, I was able to better define actions that would produce better (and more sustainable) results. It felt “right”, and helped me get much better focused on enabling activities (like making money) that before didn’t seem very satisfying. It also helps me focus any new activities I want to try (like putting together these posts) so I’m not out doing something counterproductive. So your Mission can be anything at all. It doesn’t need to be altruistic. It just needs to speak to you. It needs to be something that you will continually say “Yes, that is what I am going to do” while simultaneously rejecting any actions that are not aligned with your mission. If you can’t succeed without doing something outside of your defined Mission, you have the wrong Mission. And you are going to use it to make decisions. That is why it is so important to get correct. Get it wrong, and you risk making some very bad decisions. So think about your Mission and write it down. Come back to it over the next few days and see if it still makes sense. Test it against what you like to do and don’t like to do and what you think you want out of life. Once you are truly comfortable with it we can move on to The Vision which will be covered by my next post. Good luck! |

| body | Are you unhappy? If so, you’re not alone. Only about 50% of the population describes themselves as happy, and while those living in higher-income countries that are better off financially rate a bit higher on the happiness scale, the disparity is only a few percentage points. So why is this? Since most of us are arguably better off than the vast majority of people who lived throughout human history, why are we not more happy? The answer, and the secret to happiness, can be found in simple economic theory. First, what creates happiness? There are many ways to answer this, but the simplest is we are happy when we have what we value. By “have”, I mean relationships, health, finances, etc. It doesn’t have to be a physical possession, but it could be. Everyone is different. You can prove this by just asking anyone what makes them happy. They will always answer with things they want to have either control of, or readily available. So if “children” make you happy, you don’t want children that live somewhere else in the world that you never interact with, you want children that are available and part of your life. But if happiness is having things of value, what determines the value we place on something? Again, this can be different for different people, but in this case we are all subject to the laws of economics. And in economics, scarcity creates value. If there is less of something, it tends to be worth more. A natural diamond is worth more than a synthetic diamond (even though most of us can’t tell the difference) and both are worth more than coal (even though all are just made of carbon). The ironic thing is that once you have something, it is no longer scarce to you. Therefore, you tend to value it less than things that are not available. Think about air and water. For those who cannot breathe, or those who have no water, these are incredibly valuable resources. For many of us, we don’t even give them a thought. And it’s why things you wanted so badly often don’t seem so important once you get them…whether it’s a spouse, a great job, or that new car. We’re off focusing on other things we don’t have that now seem more valuable because they are what is scarce in our lives, not what we have. So how do you change this? The answer is surprisingly simple: focus on how scarce what you have is. Think of all the people throughout human history who would love to be in the same circumstances as you. By doing so you will create value in your current conditions. It is often quoted that gratitude is one of the common characteristics of happy people, and this is because gratitude is expressing value for the current conditions you have in your life. So create a habit in your life of consciously acknowledging all the good things you have, and how valuable they are. I think you will be surpised at how this makes you feel. Did this work for you? Let me know! |

| body | For years I struggled with an increasingly difficult weight problem the way most people do...by trying to diet and exercise. And by that, I mean focusing on diet first, and then trying to bring exercise along for the ride. But other than some short spurts of success, this never produced sustainable results. And then I tried something different...I forgot about the diet and focused on the exercise. This was a radical departure for me because I was not an "exercise" person. For years I doggedly refused to work out, stating that I was a "sports" person, not a work out person. That working out was painful and boring and I would never be able to consistently get myself to do it. Everything changed for me however when I saw a particularly unflattering picture of myself and then did something foolish: I ordered an extreme workout program off of an infomercial. It seemed foolish even at the time I was placing the order. The first time I tried the workout I didn't even make it through the warm up. But the next day I tried it again. And somehow I kept going, getting a little better each time. It produced good results. After awhile I wanted to know how many calories I was burning, so I bought a heart-rate monitor, learned how to convert this to calories, and measured the output. And I was crushed! My grueling, nearly 1-hour workout sessions were burning 400-500 calories. A couple of sodas worth. And then something crazy happened. I started eating better. Not because I was following any particular diet, but because I viewed every piece of food relative to how hard it was to work the calories off. All of a sudden that little bag of potato chips I ate with lunch every day wasn't just a tasty small portion of a meal, it was almost half my workout! And so I chose to eat something else. And since then I've never forbid myself from eating something...and I still eat things that aren't so healthy. I just find myself doing it much less. And so I lost weight. And I've kept it off...for 5 years and counting. In retrospect I tried to figure out why this worked so well when starting with diet worked so poorly and here's what I concluded: 1 - When you start with trying to change or reduce your diet, you are in an immediate state of deprivation and pain...and you must maintain this state continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until hopefully you just get used to it....which ultimately leads to backsliding and failure. This is just not a state you can maintain for the rest of your life. 2- When you start with exercise you only need to get yourself to do it for 30 minutes to an hour a day..and that's it! You can forget about it the rest of the time. It's much easier to get yourself to endure the pain when you know it's only going to be for a short time. And it is something you can see doing for the rest of your life (even if you may not enjoy it.) because it takes up so little time of your day. 3- Exercise produces much more immediate visible results as your body will get much toner even before you lose much weight....thus you get near immediate positive reinforcement 4 - Exercise then gives a reference to weight diet choices against...so it's not about changing everything you eat...it comes down to one choice at a time and allows you to adjust your choices over time. There is no deprivation because there is nothing you are not allowed to eat. You just choose to eat differently. So the bottom line is that diet and exercise is not the best way to lose weight...but exercise and then diet is. It sounds like semantics, but it truly is a much different reality. Let me know if this works for you too! |
