      "body": "Great work. Have you tried water resistant mdf? you can get a good crisp finish and a depth of about 4mm because it has been treated. Also I strongly recommend you use limewood,( really sort but close grained so you can go very fine). Holly is very hard and close grained and good for miniature pieces. And if you can get it english walnut for crisp work. It will make all the difference and wont blunt your chisels like mdf. Thanks for sharing.",

      "body": "Thanks Elvis. MDF is not really ideal to do carvings like this, at all. It indeed splits. The thing that happens to me more is that the fibers will slowly tear apart after cutting. It gets really fickle, almost impossible to get really sharp and clean cuts if you want to go into detail. One of the reasons I'm switching over to basswood and birch. I wan't to go smaller, but MDF doesn't allow me anymore.",

Even though I think this piece turned out pretty good, I’m not a professional woodworker. I’m still learning and that is the sole reason why I would like to share my woodworking process and progress with you Steemers.</p>\n<h3><p><strong>Process.</strong></p></h3>\n<p>All of my previous pieces had their carvings centered. This time I wanted to try something else. I wanted to get a story going, something more like a painting. To play around with the composition of how and where I could place the figures. Hence the flying whales and the floating astronaut.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DMfnp40X0AAbcpq.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(3) </strong></em><em>Like every other carving I began with getting the design on the wood and carving away the outlines.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DMkvI0VWkAA1ab2.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(4) </strong></em><em>My focus was to get the astronaut done first. I started to play around with the planets as well.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DM0MDAiX0AA0_f1.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(5) </strong></em><em>Before I started on the outlines of the whales I wanted to get the details done on the moon man.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DM5WR1tXUAABj6M.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(6) </strong></em><em>I wanted to get as much detail in there as possible. Wrinkles, straps, everything. The MDF did not allow me to go much further. It was way to fickle in the end.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DM-g4tlX4AEFq4C.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(7) </strong></em><em>Now it was time to get the space whales going. Outlines and layers first. The details came later.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DNDqvcPXkAADO2l.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(8) </strong></em><em>I had some troubles making the smaller whale look less clunky. In hindsight I shouldn’t have carved his front flipper so deep.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DNEWEY7W0AEesgX.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(9) </strong></em><em>After finishing the big guy I did sandpaper the piece. As you might have noticed I used another coating this time.</em></p>\n<h3><strong>Next.</strong></h3>\n<p>At the moment I’m not really sure what my next project is going to be. Some days ago I got myself some basswood and birch. It will be my first time carving in real hardwood so I have to keep that in mind. This is also why I got the other coating. Even though I think this piece turned out pretty good, I’m not a professional woodworker. I’m still learning and that is the sole reason why I would like to share my woodworking process and progress with you Steemers.</p>\n<h3><p><strong>Process.</strong></p></h3>\n<p>All of my previous pieces had their carvings centered. This time I wanted to try something else. I wanted to get a story going, something more like a painting. To play around with the composition of how and where I could place the figures. Hence the flying whales and the floating astronaut.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DMfnp40X0AAbcpq.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(3) </strong></em><em>Like every other carving I began with getting the design on the wood and carving away the outlines.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DMkvI0VWkAA1ab2.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(4) </strong></em><em>My focus was to get the astronaut done first. I started to play around with the planets as well.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DM0MDAiX0AA0_f1.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(5) </strong></em><em>Before I started on the outlines of the whales I wanted to get the details done on the moon man.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DM5WR1tXUAABj6M.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(6) </strong></em><em>I wanted to get as much detail in there as possible. Wrinkles, straps, everything. The MDF did not allow me to go much further. It was way to fickle in the end.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DM-g4tlX4AEFq4C.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(7) </strong></em><em>Now it was time to get the space whales going. Outlines and layers first. The details came later.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DNDqvcPXkAADO2l.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(8) </strong></em><em>I had some troubles making the smaller whale look less clunky. In hindsight I shouldn’t have carved his front flipper so deep.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DNEWEY7W0AEesgX.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(9) </strong></em><em>After finishing the big guy I did sandpaper the piece. As you might have noticed I used another coating this time.</em></p>\n<h3><strong>Next.</strong></h3>\n<p>At the moment I’m not really sure what my next project is going to be. Some days ago I got myself some basswood and birch. It will be my first time carving in real hardwood so I have to keep that in mind. This is also why I got the other coating.       "body": "<h3><strong>TimTheTatman Tribute.</strong></h3>\n<p>Relief carving is a type of woodcarving in which figures are carved in a flat panel of wood. Even though I think this piece turned out pretty good, I’m not a professional woodworker. I’m still learning and that is the sole reason why I would like to share my woodworking process and progress with you Steemers.</p>\n<h3><p><strong>Process.</strong></p></h3>\n<p>Who the hell is TimTheTatman? Well, with over a million followers, Tim is one of the bigger streamers on Twitch. There is a reason for that. He’s in my honest opinion more entertaining than most comedy shows. I’ve been watching him for years and for all that I want to thank him.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DKuTC0xX0AIcFGC.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(3) </strong></em><em>After transferring Tim’s logo using some carbon paper, I started working on the bear. It being the most prominent part of the logo, I wanted to start on it first instead of doing the outlines.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DLNKvbiWsAAyt1A.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(4) </strong></em><em>His upper lip and cheeks were actually a pretty good challenge.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DLXcu8wX0AEJaVh.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(5) </strong></em><em>To get a better picture of how to get the different layers done I started on the outline. </em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DLsFbxPX0AAByEN.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(6) </strong></em><em>After getting the outline done I began on the letters in the logo. This actually took me a very long time since I wanted to make the cuts as sharp as possible.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DLxQklnWAAEQeLb.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(7) </strong></em><em>The outer line was important to expose.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DL7iO7OXcAA00V5.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(8) </strong></em><em>In the beginning I was a bit afraid of carving the claws, but luckily the outer line was thick enough for it not to just break away.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DMAv9OJWAAAObKD.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(9) </strong></em><em>After exposing the outer line I started working on the details. I tried making the letters more pop and the wings more elegant.</em></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DMBVOZIUMAA6aae.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\"/></p>\n<p><em><strong>(10) </strong></em><em>I finished the carving and all the details and did sandpaper the piece just slightly.</em></p>\n<h3><strong>Next.</strong></h3>\n<p>You might be wondering. Tom, what are you going to make next? At the moment I’m planning to do one more carving in MDF. This carving will contain a scared astronaut looking at space whales.
