He is looking to collect all six Infinity Stones and obliterate half of the universe so that balance will be restored. It's up to the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and other superheroes we have encountered in the last 10 years via 18 movies, to stop him.\n\nReview:\n\nEverything about Avengers: Infinity War is big. Budget, props, cast, crew, visual optics, and the expectations. The build-up to this movie over this decade was delivered in serialized blockbuster entertaining movies. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo now create a cohesive narrative to finish this story arc of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that meets those expectations but never quite pushes the envelope. \n\nWriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely get to play with the fan-favourites -- be it individual souls like Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) or the groups like Guardians of the Galaxy or Team Cap. They split these supers into mismatched, yet interesting teams and make them face harrowing situations. Working together to figure out their next plan to stop Thanos' mayhem and the friction generated because of this makes up the core of Infinity War's fun side. Doctor Strange and Iron Man/Tony Stark go head to head in the battle of wits, insults, intellect, and stylish goatees. Spider-Man (Tom Holland) uses his knowledge of pop culture to find ideas to defeat the Black Order. Two of the Chris-es (Pratt and Hemsworth) get into one-upmanship the instant their characters meet. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) delivers quite some laughs with his Hulk performance anxiety issues. But when Gamora (Zoe Saldana) has to deal with her adopted father Thanos on her own or when the rest of the Avengers on Earth -- Captain America, Black Panther, Black Widow etc -- have to rally around The Vision to protect the Mind Stone, the scenes make for emotional fodder. MCU catharsis also takes place. Marvel boss Kevin Feige, the directors, writers are ruthless when their purge adds to the casualties on both sides of the war.\n\nThe punchlines, zingers, fun situations, bad pickles arrive like clockwork. The movie tells you when it's okay to laugh or feel bad. The Russo brothers have to maintain the pace of the movie while juggling these multiple plotlines. A lot has to be crammed into very little time. It's like a butter-laden mixed paratha -- there is only so much you can stuff in. The fun elements act as the butter keeping it tasty, while friendship, love, and pain remain undercooked. There are several poignant moments that fail to peak because the story has to move on. The change of scenery or realm undercuts the development of the character arc. Yes, even when it's Thanos.\n\nThis movie is about Thanos. You get to know where he is coming from and what he is now. Josh Brolin, from the beginning of the movie, takes charge of this purple menace. From delivering authoritative, philosophical monologues, to feeling pain after losing someone close to him, Brolin brings the Mad Titan to life. Thanos thinks he is being merciful when he is inflicting genocide spanning the entire universe. You want to understand where he is coming from because we have seen this Hydra tendency in Captain America: The Winter Soldier before. But the crammed plotline undercuts the audience emotional response. The Russo brothers assume that viewers have kept up with all the MCU movies, therefore, a lot of emotional moments between two superheroes feel rushed and underdeveloped. This is why characters like Captain America, Black Widow, Black Panther feel gravely underutilised. Others like Shuri, Winter Soldier/White Wolf, M'Baku, Falcon, War Machine, provide cameo service. That's the price one pays when the scales of production and story are of mammoth proportions like this.\n\nHaving said that, the movie delivers a fun experience. It takes you to places it hasn't gone before. Elements like seeing a Game of Thrones cast member being larger than life; instant bonding and solidarity between female members of the Avengers (while the men are busy with their dick measuring contest); Bruce Banner behaving like a PhD student in front of Shuri, only add another layer of entertainment. Opulence is the buzzword and the movie presents a polished product. It meets expectations and that's about it. The last half an hour of the movie is spectacular in every way. Twists and turns hit you full speed and a massive cliffhanger (a rather hopeful one, if you are damn convinced about the 'Dread it. Run from it. Destiny still arrives' sentiment) leaves you wanting.\n\nThe film follows the Marvel formula to the T. Towards the end of Infinity War, we reach the breaking point when the hero (so many of them here) of the story is brought face to face with his inadequacy. The next Avengers ride promises to be a thrilling one, packed with the redemption journey and ultimate win.",

In one week’s time, we would have seen Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel’s grand answer to anyone who ever doubted we’d get tired of superhero movies. In 10 years, Marvel has gone from suggesting that side characters such as Iron Man and Thor could carry films of their own, to fielding demands from those very fans for spin-off films featuring other characters even further down the list.\n\nWe live in an era when a Black Panther movie could become one of the most successful films at the box office in history - nothing is written in stone any longer. No story is too small, no small actor is worth less than anyone else and no filmmaker’s passion can be overlooked. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is, beyond a shadow of doubt, the greatest cinematic experiment of our times. It is the highest-grossing film series in history, overtaking the likes of Harry Potter, Star Wars and James Bond.\n\nThis is no small feat. I still remember the first time Samuel L Jackson took to the hallowed stage of Hall H at the San Diego Comic Con, and introduced the characters we’d spend the next decade of our lives with. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Scarlet Witch, The Incredible Hulk and others. The roster has expanded since that momentous day, and it will continue to expand for decades to come.\n\n\n\n\nBut it all began with Nick Fury’s words, spoken for the first time in The Avengers. “There was an idea.The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people, to see if they could become something more, to see if they could work together when we needed them, to fight the battles we never could.”\n\nWith these words in mind, let’s undertake the most difficult (and masochistic) endeavour any fan could, and let’s rank the 18 films of the MCU, in descending order.\n\nThor: The Dark World\n\nPerhaps the only Marvel movie that doesn’t warrant a second viewing, if only to quell fears that it simply isn’t up to the mark. The Dark World came at a moment of flux for Marvel, when they couldn’t really decide in which direction to take their characters - this tonal inconsistency has since been addressed. It was also one of the few times that Marvel openly aped another property - on this occasion it was Game of Thrones. They even brought veteran GoT director Alan Taylor onto the project after Patty Jenkins (who later went on to direct Wonder Woman) departed due to creative differences. Taylor later became the first filmmaker to publicly denounce Marvel. More would follow suit.\n\nAnt-Man\n\nAnt-Man (2015)\nThe story behind Ant-Man is easily more intriguing than the film itself, which is a jarring clash of two opposing styles and tones. When original director - and firm fan favourite - Edgar Wright dropped out of the project just weeks before filming was scheduled to begin - once again, creative differences were blamed - Marvel quickly hired their least auteuristic filmmaker, Peyton Reed. The final film retained much of Wright’s inputs, particularly the cast he had assembled and the action sequenced he had pre-visualised, but couldn’t help but feel incredibly slight.\n\nThe Incredible Hulk\n\nThe Incredible Hulk (2008)\nIn hindsight, The Incredible Hulk isn’t as inconsequential as you might have initially thought. But in what seems to be a common thread between my least favourite Marvel movies (with one major exception), it too was bogged down by creative troubles. The Incredible Hulk was Marvel’s second film, back when they weren’t under the umbrella of Disney and made movies for different studios. In the end, The Incredible Hulk felt like a compromised vision, between opposing studios, and a lead actor who began taking over director Louis Leterrier’s film. Edward Norton was not invited back.\n\nIron Man 2\n\nIron Man 2 (2010)\nOthers would probably rank Iron Man 2 lower on their lists, but there are several things to enjoy in the movie. For example, how can we not collectively celebrate the presence of Mickey Rourke, hamming it up as a wronged Russian who only seemed to be interesting in one thing - his burrrd. Also somewhat forgotten is Sam Rockwell’s cocky supporting performance as Justin Hammer, who was, in many ways, a stupider version of Tony Stark.\n\nDoctor Strange\n\nDoctor Strange (2016)\nDoctor Strange is one of the most disappointing entries in the MCU, simply because unlike so many of the other films they’ve made, it actually looked like it was aiming higher. Director Scott Derrickson was a unique choice for the material, Benedict Cumberbatch inspires confidence in whatever he touches, and those trailers really did look amazing, if a little derivative. But it ended up being exactly what Marvel movies at the time were being accused of - bland, unoriginal and as generic as Cumberbatch’s American accent.\n\nCaptain America: The First Avenger (2011)\nThis is the precise moment in the list when there is no longer any room for bad movies. The First Avenger could have easily been ranked higher on another day, the fun throwback to the good old days of Lucasfilm that it was. And under the direction of Lucasfilm alum Joe Johnston, who previously made the underrated The Rocketeer, it was a surprisingly moving period picture, traditional in its sensibility and style - and it featured one of the best post credit scenes of any Marvel movie.\n\nSpider-Man: Homecoming\n\nSpider-Man: Homecoming (2017)\nSpider-Man: Homecoming is what Ant-Man should have been, an offshoot of the larger MCU about characters that felt real and stakes that didn’t feel overblown. Without pushing the envelope in any way, Homecoming achieved exactly the vibe it set out to achieve - it doesn’t hide the fact that it’s a tribute to the coming-of-age films of John Hughes - and for that, it must be appreciated.\n\nGuardians of the Galaxy\n\nGuardians of the Galaxy (2014)\nThe first Guardians movie was one of the biggest gambles Marvel ever undertook, but it paid off. Director James Gunn was untested in blockbuster territory, and even though they mostly managed to keep it from being reported, Guardians of the Galaxy was massively over-budget. It was, however, the most offbeat of any MCU film to that point - Gunn brought much needed visual flair to the increasingly uniform MCU, and even Marvel knows that if you give people of Star Wars, they have an almost Pavlovian response to it.\n\nCaptain America: The Winter Soldier\n\nCaptain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)\nWhen Marvel hired Joe & Anthony Russo to take the helm of Captain America 2 - their previous credits included episodes of Arrested Development and Community, both sitcoms, and both great misdirections from the film they were about to deliver - no one expected them to be the ones who would help Marvel grow up. The Russos made a movie that seemed to respond to real-world problems, and they more than made up for their lack of finesse in directing action with a dense, character-driven plot.\n\nCaptain America: Civil War\n\nCaptain America: Civil War (2016)\nThe immense success that the Russos had with Winter Soldier earned them a promotion. Civil War was very much an audition for the Avengers movies they would go on to direct, and they nailed it. It was, if it’s even possible, a more layered movie than the Winter Soldier, and is a great example of the long-form storytelling that Marvel has perfected. The Captain America movies feel like they belong in the same world, which doesn’t sound like too much to ask for from a series about the same character, but look at the Thor and Iron Man trilogies.\n\nAvengers: Age of Ultron\n\nThere was no way that Avengers: Age of Ultron was going to come close to the majesty of the first Avengers (more on that later), but director Joss Whedon, despite his complaints, came so very close. Age of Ultron wasn’t like the first Avengers film at all, and perhaps that is what took fans aback - instead of being a colourful romp, it was a more toned-down exploration of these superheroes’ psyches, their fears and insecurities. Not that it didn’t come through with the action, but it felt like an evolution, it felt risky - and that’s not something that can be said of too many Marvel movies.\n\nThor\n\nThor (2011)\nAlright, so here’s the first controversial choice. It’s safe to say that Kenneth Branagh’s Thor is no longer a part of any conversation - inside and outside the MCU - especially since the Thor series has been routinely redefining itself with every new film, and Ragnarok’s cartoonishness has little in common with the Shakespearean tone that Branagh brought to the original Thor film. But before Joss Whedon’s Avengers made fun of Thor for being a stoic, stuck-up prude, that’s exactly who he was, and who he should have been. On a side note, Patrick Doyle’s score is uncommonly good for an MCU film, a fact that director Taika Waititi recognised and revisited in Ragnarok.\n\nGuardians of the Galaxy Vol 2\n\nGuardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (2016)\nLike Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 isn’t what fans of the original would have expected - it’s more sombre, less light-footed and more emotional. Watching it reminded me of some of the best Pixar movies - like those classics, Vol 2 was a movie that wasn’t afraid of tackling serious themes. When all is said and done, we will look beyond Marvel’s razzle dazzle and appreciate the MCU for boldly telling stories that no one really acknowledges, stories about parents and children - be it Howard and Tony Stark, Thanos and Gamora, Odin and Thor and Ego and Peter Quill.\n\nIron Man (2008)\nThe one that started it all, all the good and bad - everything from Marvel’s ongoing problem with making their villains evil versions of their heroes, to the unique tone that has now become synonymous with their movies. And to think that they were hesitant to cast Robert Downey Jr in the role. We can’t really imagine a Marvel Universe without him, let alone the character of Tony Stark. \n\nThor: Ragnarok (2017)\nIt’s no secret that after the lukewarm response to The Dark World, the Thor series was in need of a strong reboot, and Marvel, harkening back to the early days of Phase I, when they used to appoint filmmakers with a unique voice to lead the charge, went and brought Kiwi Taika Waititi into the mix. And like their appointments of Branagh, Whedon and Favreau; and later, Ryan Coogler, it was an inspired choice. Raganarok went on to become the highest-grossing (and highest-rated) film of the Thor trilogy, which means that it has set the tone for the character’s future.\n\nIron Man 3 (2013)\nAnd speaking of strong directorial voices, for precisely one glorious moment in their decade-long history, Marvel gave the impression that they’d cut someone a blank cheque to do whatever they wanted. There is no other film in the MCU that feels like it is the product of one vision than Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black. It’s unthinkable that Marvel would have the courage to pull a Mandarin ever again, but that reveal remains, to this day, the single most surprising moment in any Marvel film. It counts, of course, if the Mandarin isn’t sacred in your eyes.\n\nBlack Panther (2018)\nTo quote my review of the film, “There is not enough that can be said about what director Ryan Coogler has achieved with this film. Better minds will continue writing about it for years. They will make videos about this movie, it will be discussed among friends of all ages, all races, all shapes and sizes; it will be taught in school, debated among intellectuals, it will be seen as the moment everything changed.”\n\nThe Avengers (2012)\nThe great critic Roger Ebert would often recall the impact the first Star Wars movie had on him. He would bring it up, almost reverentially, when referring to modern blockbusters who aspired to its greatness. I believe that for our generation, that difficult-to-describe feeling can be likened to watching the Avengers team up for the first time, of the Hulk telling Cap that he’s always angry, and listening to that wonderful theme for the first time, as the camera performs a waltz around them. You’re humming it now.",

He could very possibly end the lives of some of, if not all of, the Avengers.\n\nHis name, as the Avengers: Infinity War marketing blitz has already seared into your brain, is Thanos.\n\nFor 10 years, Marvel Studios has been pumping out superhero movies — 18 successful ones, to be exact. In that span of movies, we’ve seen the beginning of Iron Man and Captain America, the end of Ultron, Thor’s redemption, Ant-Man’s offbeat adventures, new additions like Scarlet Witch and Black Panther, and the weird birth of Vision.\n\nBut it’s Thanos, this ultimate, world-destroying villain, who marks the occasion that is Infinity War. The biggest, baddest Marvel villain of the past decade is the core of the biggest, baddest Marvel movie ever made.\n\nYet for all the hype, we actually haven’t been told very much about Thanos beyond his penchant for universe destruction. He’s amassed a whopping four minutes of actual screen time in those 18 movies, and the last we actually saw of him was in a post-credits scene in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.\n\nA villain this mysterious is necessarily going to raise some questions.\n\nWhy is he coming to Earth? Is purple his real color? What’s he like in the comic books? Does he have friends? What does he like to do for fun? And most importantly, what makes him different, and more important, than all the other villains the Avengers have faced together and apart?\n\nSince Marvel hasn’t screened the movie yet, we don’t have all the answers. What we do have is what Marvel has shown us so far of its cinematic universe, and the comic book source material the film is loosely based on. Here, then, is a brief guide to what to expect from Thanos in Infinity War:\n\nCan Thanos have it all (the Infinity Gauntlet)?\nTo fully understand Thanos, you have to understand the Infinity Stones. The Marvel cinematic universe has focused more on what Thanos wants than his own backstory, resulting in a characterization defined in large part by his desire to possess the stones.\n\nIn the mythology of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Infinity Stones are six “ingots” of immense power. We learn this in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, when the Collector explains to the Guardians (and the audience) why they’re such a big deal. He says:\n\n\nThe Collector goes on to say that the gems are so powerful, the people who hold them eventually blow up and die. (YouTube)\nA new video that highlights the ten-year journey of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the highest grossing film franchise in history, has been released one week ahead of the release of Avengers: Infinity War, the 19th film in the series and in many ways Marvel’s biggest movie ever.\n\nThe 4.5-minute video begins with an interview with Jon Favreau, the original architect of the MCU, who directed the first two Iron Man movies starring Robert Downey Jr, the man Marvel didn’t initially want to cast. Speaking three weeks before the release of the first Iron Man, Favreau seemed to be a loss for words. “It’s a very interesting time right now,” he said, “and boy, you don’t know what’s going to happen. I know that I am proud of it. I know that we have done everything we can. I really don’t know how people are going to react to it.”\n\n\nIron Man, released in 2008, and as we all know now, kick started the MCU. Downey Jr became a fan favourite for his portrayal of Tony Stark, and has become the de facto leader of the movies, both in front of and behind the camera.\n\n\n\nBut 10 years on, the MCU is not the same series we became fans of. It has branched out into new directions - it has even travelled to realms beyond our understanding. And through the course of the video, we hear from the men and women who took us there. Kevin Feige, the man who dreamt it all up, says that in the beginning, all he wanted was for the first Iron Man to succeed, and when it did, to bring different heroes together in one movie.\n\nThat movie was the first Avengers, released in 2012 and directed by Joss Whedon. Several of the people who speak in the video mark the release of the first Avengers as the turning point for the MCU. The film made over $1.5 billion at the box office, and validated everyone’s faith in these characters and films. As Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Chris Evans (Captain America) say, it was the moment they first believed that they were a part of something that meant a lot to fans.\n\nAnd now all these characters will come together - some for the first time - in Avengers: Infinity War, the third Avengers movie and easily Marvel’s most ambitious film yet. “I don’t think this has ever happened before in cinematic history,” says Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch in the films.\n\nWith the success of Black Panther, all eyes are turned towards Infinity War.
