      "body": "**The 19.6 million acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is in the line of direct fire by the hungry oil industry and the shortsightedness of US Congress.** \n\n*Over 400,000 acres of pristine American tundra is in under the threat of oil wells and drilling. According to what the administration has projected, there would be sales of around 400,000 acres, (designated as the 1002 area) at nearly $3000 an acre. \n\nIt is surprising that this is the estimate that has been projected, seeing as the lease sales in the region have been on an average, less than a tenth of the $3000 estimation. Recent top bids have been $15 per acre. This has to be number that offers breakeven for drilling in ANWR. The estimates by the United States Geological Survey are based on surveys from the 1980s. (1984-1985, to be precise). The re-analysis of this data has had the findings shifting each time.\n\n\n**According to the current estimate by USGS there is, in all likelihood, no large deposit at all. They are scattered all over ANWR’s coastal plain in small traps.** Of course, the only way to know is to drill. And so far, the wells that have been drilled have had disappointing results at best, and dry at worse. There has been only one well that has been dug in the 1002 area. The results have been kept secret for long, but it has recently been found that those results have been disappointing as well.\n\nhttps://www.adn.com/resizer/-UFHDGxgcWIR0tjB1hyR5Ra4OXI=/1200x0/s3.amazonaws.com/arc-wordpress-client-uploads/adn/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/19175910/Exxon-Mobil.jpg\n>Point Thompson Field Oil Base by Exxon Mobil.\n\nThe only notable exception is Point Thompson Field, located right next to ANWR. Point Thompson is a huge deposit of natural gas. It only started pumping a few thousand barrels of natural gas and liquids through the Trans – Alaskan pipeline. All of this natural gas income has provided a trickle of revenue to Alaska.\n\n\n\nIS IT WORTH IT?\n--------\n\n\nThe technology of today makes the oil industry an incredible technology based industry. But with all of that, oil exploration is still like playing a lottery. Oil major Shell discovered it the hard way when it pumped $7 billion to drill a hole in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska in 2015, only to dig a dry hole.\n\n\n\nWhat are the environmental impacts?\n-----\n\nhttps://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2000/1*r7SOiEE1yWcKwgIOLEOXIw.png\n\n- ANWR is one of the country’s largest wildlife refuges and the environmental costs are currently uncertain.  Let’s take a look at what the ANWR holds in terms of natural and wildlife reserves and what past outcomes have been.\n\n- ANWR coastal plain holds the highest density of Polar Bear dens in Alaska.\n\n- Caribou have raised their offsprings in the 1002 area, most notably the porcupine caribou herd. They are also the essential source of food for many native Alaskans and First Nations People in Canada.\n\n- It is a large carbon sink.\n\n- When the first ever oil well was drilled in ANWR (unsuccessfully) in the 1980s, the oil companies did remove their equipment from the site. **Satellite imagery has shown that the Tundra forest is yet to recover, 30 years later. It is clear that whatever drilling is done in the ANWR will have long term effects.**\n\n- It is unlikely that any oil and gas infrastructure will be completely removed from ANWR or the land would be restored, due to the enormous costs associated.\n\n\n\nThe Local opinion\n-\n\n\n\nWhile nearly 80% of Alaskans have been in support of drilling in ANWR, there has been vehement opposition in the past and present.\n\n\n-    The government of Canada issued a statement opposing drilling in the refuge, and reminding the Trump administration that the two countries had signed a 1987 agreement to protect porcupine herd and its habitat.\n\n-    For Native Alaskans, the issue is not about money or oil. The Gwich’in community have always depended on the Porcupine Caribou herd that raise their offsprings in the 1002 area. To them, the 1002 area is *“the sacred place where life begins.”* They have opposed drilling in the refuge for decades.\n\nAccording to the Gwich’in Steerling community; *“We stand firm against development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This is going to have a huge impact on our way of life and is a violation of our human rights. This is definitely the beginning of the fight, it is definitely not the end. Today, there is hardly any place left on the planet that remains untouched and unscathed by the heavy footprint of the human civilization.\n\n![ak09-02076.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRr5VVv5vrdz7fN1GDRNc8ym3E6f9CEuc4wmfPkeUMHZV/ak09-02076.jpg)\n\n**Now, the 19.6 million acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is in the line of direct fire by the hungry oil industry and the shortsightedness of US Congress.**\n\nANWR is a vast stretch of primordial wilderness, stretching from the Spruce Forests in the South, to the Brooks range, onto the sloping wetlands that flow into the icy cold Beaufort Sea. The Refuge is the breeding ground of over 200,000 Caribou, the winter habitat of Polar Bears, and the place where millions and millions of migratory birds gather, after having flown in all the way from many parts of North America.\n\nhttps://breakingenergy.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2013/09/1607181.jpg\n\nBut if the Republican Tax Reform bill is passed, all of that would be replaced by oil wells, gravel roads, airfields,  oil camps and the infrastructure they invariably entail. And should they become sufficiently large enough (which they will, considering mankind’s enormous need for oil and the money-hungry oil companies and economies) very soon, the ANWR will be under serious threat.\n\nWhen the bill is passed, it would open ANWR’s long contested coastal plain to oil rigs.\n\nAccording to estimates by the US Geological Survey, the estimate is that the area holds between 4.3 billion to 11.8 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil. With oil money gushing into the states since the Trans-Alaska pipeline started carrying oil from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez, many Alaskan republicans have tried to open up ANWR to drilling and failed. The 19.6 million acre refuge has been largely protected for the last 35 years with no development allowed. \n\n*But with the American Congress having refused to take action over the ultimate fate of ANWR and always leaving it for future congresses to decide, ANWR has been the hotbed for one of the longest running environmental controversies in Modern American History.*\n\nThe Present...\n----\n\nAlaska has *80% of its budget coming from oil and gas taxes and royalties*. Most government jobs, schools, health clinics and infrastructure have been largely funded by property taxes on oil industry. Hence, it is not surprising that most – but not all – of the 10,000 residents favor opening ANWR to drilling.\n\nThe Arctic Slope Regional Corporation says “A clear majority of the people of the North slope support responsible development in ANWR; they should have the same rights to economic self-determination as people of the United States.”\n\n\n**But as we know, responsible development when it comes to oil is a far-fetched idea.**\n\nStay tuned for more on the Arctic Refuge’s Oil Drilling crisis.
