In wingsuiting, that matters, because they need to leave the aircraft at a different spot from everyone else.\n\nFor anyone outside skydiving,  a 'spot' is the point in the sky where you leave the aircraft so you open in the right area and stay separated from other groups.\n\n**So the plan should have been simple:**\n\n•\tThe regular freefall groups exit first\n•\tI exit with them as the lone wingsuiter\n•\tThen the pilot flies to a different spot\n•\tThe 2-way wingsuit team exits after that\n\n\n*That’s how it should have happened.*\n\nIt didn’t.\n\n\nThe moment it went wrong\n\n\nAfter the freefallers exited, I moved into the door to leave the aircraft.\n\nAt that point, I was meant to go.\n\nThe green light was on (see middle left of the photo).\n\nThat means, from my side of exaggerated near miss.\n\nThis was the kind of mistake that can kill multiple people at once.\n\n\n**Why this should never have happened**\n\n\nSomeone, somewhere in the chain, got it badly wrong.\n\nBecause the pilot should have known that:\n\n1.\tI was not part of the 2-way team\n2.\tI was exiting with the regular groups\n3.\tThe aircraft should not accelerate until I was gone\n\n\n**So one of a few things must have happened:**\n\nThe pilot wasn’t properly briefed.\nThe Jump master didn’t clearly explain the exit order.\nThe 2-way team’s separate spot plan wasn’t communicated properly.\nThe pilot assumed that because I was in a wingsuit, I must have been part of that team.\n\n\nWhatever the exact cause was, the result was the same:\n\nA completely avoidable situation that nearly turned catastrophic.\n\n\nWhat pissed me off most was what happened after.\n\nWhen I got to the ground no one took responsibility for it.\n\nNo proper ownership.\nNo clear explanation.\nNo real accountability.\n\nAnd that, to me, is almost worse than the mistake itself.\n\nBecause mistakes can happen in aviation and sky diving.\n\nBut when something goes that wrong, something that could have taken out an aircraft, the response should never be silence, deflection, or shrugging it off.\n\nThat’s how people get hurt the next time.\n\n\nSkydiving is dangerous enough without stupidity.\n\n\nPeople outside the sport already think skydiving is reckless.\n\nThe truth is, most of the time it’s actually built on systems, discipline, communication, and procedure.\n\nThat’s what keeps it safe.\n\nNot luck.\n\nSo when something like this happens, it isn’t “just one of those things.”\n\nIt’s usually a breakdown in communication and responsibility.\n\nAnd in wingsuiting especially, little mistakes become very big, very quickly.\n\n\nI walked away from this one.\n\nBut it could have ended very differently, not just for me, but for everyone on that aircraft.\n\nThat’s why I’m sharing it.\n\nNot for sympathy.\nNot for drama.\nBut because these are the moments people need to talk about honestly.\n\nA green light means go.\n\nAnd The air was freezing, and every time we touched the cold metal, it burned through our site gloves. Even the smallest knock or bang carried through the quiet streets, alerting late night dog walkers and anyone in nearby houses. We moved carefully, without using any lights 😈\n\nSometimes, the wind or the way the boom was facing meant we landed on the green, which was a trickier angle than the beach, but we always made it down safely. We sessioned this crane for months and with with zero drama 🤘🏼\n\nCranes are one of my favourite objects to BASE jump from, as they are temporary structures in unique spots and always present a nice challenge. There are various different types of BASE jumping...some jumpers like the mountains, enjoying a long freefall, but I really enjoy urban jumps. Part of the fun for me is working out the access, and then the sneaky peaky of evading security and not getting caught. I find it makes the jump a lot more rewarding.\n\nAccessing sites like this, is 'Civil Trespass', and holds little to no weight here in the UK.\n\nWe never damage anything when gaining access. Without going in to the finer details...a telescopic ladder is usually enough, and some decent gloves. If any site managers are reading this, anti climb fences don't really work ;-)\n\nThis site did have a security guard, but he was in cabin. The window was open, but as he had the light on, he had little chance of seeing us. Thankfully this site is near a hospital, so it was constant sirens, which meant we could move further up the crane very quickly with all that background noise.\n\nI can't tell you how many times we jumped this crane, but it was a lot. It was just too easy. We had access dialled, and two landing areas. We just had to wait for the right conditions. \n\nWhat amazes me, is how many people take their dog for a walk at 2am...I mean, I find it bizarre. Almost every time we go to jump off, there is a dog walker, which we have to wait for.\n\nWe had to static line jump off this crane due to its height and where it was. I walked along the blade of a wind turbine then made a BASE jump after the blade started to move. 😨\n\nAs BASE jumpers, we are always looking to find new experiences. This night was an 'almost' perfect evening for it. There was very little wind, and I was very current, meaning I had been actively making a lot of BASE jumps at the time, particularly from wind turbines.\n\nThis evening felt right for me to try a blade walk. I had been thinking about doing it for a little while, but this night felt like the one. There was a lot of dew on the blade, so it was slippery, but the blade does have an ever so slight sandpaper like feel to the top of it. If you looks closely at the photo you might be able to make out the slightly darker part on the top side of the blade. Either side of this surface was pure gloss, and I had to make sure I didn't push off this when I made the jump, otherwise its a guaranteed slip.\n\nMy intentions were to walk as far as I felt comfortable, then make the jump, however, the further I got, the further I thought I could make it to the very end. After a few missed takes, something massive strikes… a Pike that stalks the lure three times before finally attacking. The hit is explosive and heart stopping. I honestly jumped out of my skin. Easily one of the scariest moments I’ve ever had fishing. \n\nI have a membership to certain sections of this UK river, but I don't often fish this particular section as the area floods easily, so it was nice to roll the dice and check it out again before the rain comes back and makes it unfishable. \n\nI've fished for Pike for years, but its been a while since I caught a decent size one, so was a little out of touch. I've spent the last few years focused on Sea Bass and Carp fishing.\n\nTypically anglers will start Pike fishing using dead baits after the first frost, but I believe that to be a bit of an old wives tale. I start on the 1st October, always before the first frost and I seem to do alright with dead baits. Although I prefer to catch on a lure, the chances of catching on a lure as the Winter sets in become slimmer. The Pike want to conserve energy, and don't want to be chasing lures. You can still catch on a lure, but often you'll need to get the lure very close to where they are, and they may go for a one-ff strike if it requires little effort for them.\n\nIn this instance, this Pike chased the lure and made multiple attempts at chasing then striking it. Finally got around to editing and uploading this one! 🧡\n\nFull of love, adventure, and moments that made this trip truly special. 🧡\n\nThis type of BASE Jump is called a 'Rollover', or a 'McConkey' if you're old school!\n\nNil wind is required for this type of basejump as you have an unpacked parachute, that you are letting hang down in front of you, so the last thing you need is the wind creating a sway in the parachute and lines.\n\nYou jump out and over your lines, to maintain as much line tension as possible, as if you dont, you will get slack, and the more slack you have, the harder you will slam when the slack is taken up by your body weight.\n\nSo just a big dive out forwards and in to a somersault, so you flip all the way around and can fly away looking cool.\n\nThere are quite dire consequences if you were to just step off and not clear the lines below you, you could gift wrap yourself, and that will ruin your day a bit...you might end up paying the ultimate price, so it is mandatory that you do these in nil wind and really get a good push off the object.\n\nI am not a base jumping instructor and this is not a tutorial, there is actually a lot more that goes in to this type of jump, and how to organise the parachute for this type of jump. Please do not go and attempt a rollover because your saw this post.\n\nAnyway, this was a 2-way base jump, I did a side float from the bridge, so I could capture my mate Gary doing this rollover. It was extremely cool to watch from this angle, as I got to see him fly away after the rollover, while I continued into freefall, yew! 🧡",
