| body | Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@gooner?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash">Vitaly Taranov</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/person-holding-us-dollar-banknote-OCrPJce6GPk?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash">Unsplash</a> There’s something special about making money from selling a piece of your body. It’s an odd moment. It can feel dystopian, but freeing in a morbid way. The curtain of capitalism gets pulled away and you see its shriveled hands working the levers while it screams “Look away!” At the start of 2024, I was fresh in the working world and trying to find any way possible to generate extra money. For whatever reason, three side hustles that became available to me this year involved bodily fluids (mostly blood components). Not one to pass up an opportunity for a few bucks, I leaned into the body fluid theme and kept them going. I will use a scoring system based on each side hustle's potential for money, the time needed to profit, and the effort needed for each. **Plasma Donation** Money: $ Time: $$ Effort: $ I wrote about my qualms with plasma donation [here](https://medium.com/illumination/3-ways-to-cash-in-on-blood-784060b0400f). I started donating plasma while I waited for the local white blood cell donation company to call me back. Thankfully, the first month of plasma donation is the best month as that's when they pay out their big promotion prices. Plasma donation is a shady business as the payout is location-dependent, the more people willing to donate in an area, the less each person makes. Each location is full of propaganda saying “Donate today to save a life!” when the company pulling out your plasma is generating millions of dollars and paying you $25. They take out a rather large amount of fluid from your body so you will feel tired for at least the rest of the day (and they don’t even give you a snack on your way out!). I stopped donating as soon as I cashed in on the promotional first-month prices and never went back. If I really need the money in the future, I’d be hard-pressed to return to this. Between the low pay and the needle wounds that build up, there are better ways to make a few bucks. Not to mention the potential for adverse effects that can occur anytime you get blood drawn and returned to you. **White Blood Cell (WBC) Donating** Money: $$$ Time: $$ Effort: $ I feel a lot better about donating white blood cells. The compensation is substantially higher, around $100/hour, and after a solid meal, you should feel fine for the rest of the day (and as a big plus, they give you all the snacks you want during and after donating!) The facilities for WBC donating are substantially nicer than the plasma donation centers, the staff are nicer, and they have snacks and an iPad for you to watch shows while donating. I only donated twice at one facility before I had an allergic reaction to something in the donation process. The head nurse dismissed me from donating for my own safety. As annoying as that is for my wallet, I appreciate the preference for safety. Most white blood cell donation centers also offer two other paid “donations”: a bone marrow harvesting procedure and a superpowered white blood cell donation. The bone marrow procedure pays about $100 more than a WBC appointment and is only an hour-long appointment (versus 3-4 hours for white blood cell donation). The superpowered white blood cell donation requires taking a medication that tells your bone marrow to pump out more white blood cells than usual. Then you go into the donation center on back-to-back days to donate white blood cells. I don’t want to have my bone marrow harvested nor do I want to take a drug to push out extra white blood cells. With that said, the WBC donation checks are very sweet and I would jump back into a donation pool if I find a different company to sign on with (Fingers crossed I don't have another allergic reaction!) **Sperm** Money: $ Time: $ Effort: $ Every guy sees those “make money by selling your sperm!” ads and dreams about the great life he can fund by jerking off into a sanitary cup a few times a week. The reality is very different. Sperm banks are highly selective on who they accept as donors, and for good reason! Imagine spending a thousand dollars to buy sperm for your picture-perfect family, just to find out that the sperm bank paid some random guy to fill their freezers full of potential children. Not a great business model. I attempted to join several sperm banks and was rejected by two before I realized why I was being rejected. They ask about your family's medical and psychological history to weed out any potential for certain conditions. I guess something in my family history is a red flag for sperm donors! Not one to be easily deterred, I kept my eyes open for another way to profit off my swimmers (it was the year of the body fluid side hustles you know). When I saw an advertisement for a research company that buys sperm to test at-home fertility kits, my answer had arrived! I quickly jumped through the hoops to enter their candidate pool and started delivering samples to their corporate deaddrop. They pay $50 in Amazon gift cards per sample, which is great in a world where Amazon sells everything. After starting and stopping a few times, I ultimately stopped this side hustle. The drop location is about an hour away from me via public transit (in the opposite direction of my regular job), and most of the drop-off times available were between 8-9 am. So even though I’d get $50 for little work, with the dollar and time cost of transit included, it came out to less than minimum wage. This was a big help to me when I was starting my new job and money was tight. It allowed me to buy things for fun when my paychecks went entirely to surviving. For that, I’m grateful, but now that I’m not counting every penny hoping to pay rent, I want to move into side hustles that don’t require jerking off to start my day. **Looking Forward** Since this was the year of body-fluid side hustles, I will 100% be avoiding those in 2025. My goal is to move towards work-from-home, passive, or creative hustles. I’d like to start a YouTube channel, continue to grow as a writer, and delve more into the stock market. My ultimate goal is to live off my passive income. I’m far from that goal today, but when I consider a new potential side hustle, I decide if it has the potential to become passive (given time and effort), or if it is keeping me in the time-money exchange. What are your side hustle goals for 2025? What did you try for 2024? Thanks for reading, Emery |

Thankfully, the first month of plasma donation is the best month as that's when they pay out their big promotion prices. \n\nPlasma donation is a shady business as the payout is location-dependent, the more people willing to donate in an area, the less each person makes. Each location is full of propaganda saying “Donate today to save a life!” when the company pulling out your plasma is generating millions of dollars and paying you $25.\n\nThey take out a rather large amount of fluid from your body so you will feel tired for at least the rest of the day (and they don’t even give you a snack on your way out!). \n\nI stopped donating as soon as I cashed in on the promotional first-month prices and never went back. \n\nIf I really need the money in the future, I’d be hard-pressed to return to this. \n\nBetween the low pay and the needle wounds that build up, there are better ways to make a few bucks. Not to mention the potential for adverse effects that can occur anytime you get blood drawn and returned to you. \n\n**White Blood Cell (WBC) Donating**\nMoney: $$$\nTime: $$\nEffort: $\n\nI feel a lot better about donating white blood cells. \n\nThe compensation is substantially higher, around $100/hour, and after a solid meal, you should feel fine for the rest of the day (and as a big plus, they give you all the snacks you want during and after donating!)\n\nThe facilities for WBC donating are substantially nicer than the plasma donation centers, the staff are nicer, and they have snacks and an iPad for you to watch shows while donating.\n\nI only donated twice at one facility before I had an allergic reaction to something in the donation process. The head nurse dismissed me from donating for my own safety. As annoying as that is for my wallet, I appreciate the preference for safety. \n\nMost white blood cell donation centers also offer two other paid “donations”: a bone marrow harvesting procedure and a superpowered white blood cell donation. \n\nThe bone marrow procedure pays about $100 more than a WBC appointment and is only an hour-long appointment (versus 3-4 hours for white blood cell donation). \n\nThe superpowered white blood cell donation requires taking a medication that tells your bone marrow to pump out more white blood cells than usual. Then you go into the donation center on back-to-back days to donate white blood cells. \n\nI don’t want to have my bone marrow harvested nor do I want to take a drug to push out extra white blood cells. \n\nWith that said, the WBC donation checks are very sweet and I would jump back into a donation pool if I find a different company to sign on with (Fingers crossed I don't have another allergic reaction!)\n\n**Sperm**\nMoney: $\nTime: $\nEffort: $\n\nEvery guy sees those “make money by selling your sperm!” ads and dreams about the great life he can fund by jerking off into a sanitary cup a few times a week. \n\nThe reality is very different. \n\nSperm banks are highly selective on who they accept as donors, and for good reason! Imagine spending a thousand dollars to buy sperm for your picture-perfect family, just to find out that the sperm bank paid some random guy to fill their freezers full of potential children.\nNot a great business model.\n\nI attempted to join several sperm banks and was rejected by two before I realized why I was being rejected. They ask about your family's medical and psychological history to weed out any potential for certain conditions. I guess something in my family history is a red flag for sperm donors! \n\nNot one to be easily deterred, I kept my eyes open for another way to profit off my swimmers (it was the year of the body fluid side hustles you know). When I saw an advertisement for a research company that buys sperm to test at-home fertility kits, my answer had arrived! \n\nI quickly jumped through the hoops to enter their candidate pool and started delivering samples to their corporate deaddrop. \nThey pay $50 in Amazon gift cards per sample, which is great in a world where Amazon sells everything. \n\nAfter starting and stopping a few times, I ultimately stopped this side hustle. \nThe drop location is about an hour away from me via public transit (in the opposite direction of my regular job), and most of the drop-off times available were between 8-9 am. So even though I’d get $50 for little work, with the dollar and time cost of transit included, it came out to less than minimum wage. \n\nThis was a big help to me when I was starting my new job and money was tight. It allowed me to buy things for fun when my paychecks went entirely to surviving. For that, I’m grateful, but now that I’m not counting every penny hoping to pay rent, I want to move into side hustles that don’t require jerking off to start my day.\n\n**Looking Forward**\n\nSince this was the year of body-fluid side hustles, I will 100% be avoiding those in 2025. \n\nMy goal is to move towards work-from-home, passive, or creative hustles. I’d like to start a YouTube channel, continue to grow as a writer, and delve more into the stock market. \n\nMy ultimate goal is to live off my passive income. I’m far from that goal today, but when I consider a new potential side hustle, I decide if it has the potential to become passive (given time and effort), or if it is keeping me in the time-money exchange. \n\nWhat are your side hustle goals for 2025? What did you try for 2024?\n\nThanks for reading,\nEmery",

Many people want to begin a meditation practice, but they do not know where or how to begin. Meditation does not have to be difficult, it can be as simple as Meditation #1, “Follow the Breath”. Taking the time to focus on our most basic function of breathing helps us to slow down and remember the simplicity of being human. **Meditation can be as simple or complicated as you want it to be.** Begin with simple meditations for a short amount of time. Keep meditating a fun experience and slowly add more time or steps as you develop your ability to sit in concentration. By keeping it fun, you will be much more likely to practice. Do not punish yourself or feel down if you forget to meditate in a day. When you realize you have forgotten to meditate, make a mental note to meditate when you have open time. If you really do not have time to meditate, that is when you need meditation the most! An easy trick to include the meditative mindset into your day is to focus on your breath and the action you are performing in the moment. **For example**: You are painting a wall or mowing the lawn and you remember you have not yet meditated today. Focus on your breath and on your action. Connect your breath to the brush stroke or with your stride. Count out 10 inhales and exhales. Once you get to 10 inhales/exhales, notice how your mind feels a little clearer, and your actions feel a little more intentional. That is it! You have completed a moving meditation today. **Here are three daily meditations for better health, wellness, and memory:** https://i.postimg.cc/QMZ4vT1X/ale-romo-Tdr-UCJU6-VFs-unsplash.jpg Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@aleromophotography?utm\_content=creditCopyText&utm\_medium=referral&utm\_source=unsplash">Ale Romo</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/woman-in-white-bikini-sitting-on-red-chair-TdrUCJU6VFs?utm\_content=creditCopyText&utm\_medium=referral&utm\_source=unsplash">Unsplash</a> **Meditation 1: “Follow the Breath”** This is the most basic meditation. Everything begins from here and everything returns to this meditation. 1. Start from a seated or standing posture 2. As you inhale, draw your breath into your abdomen, filling every inch of your inner space. 3. Focus on the experience of breathing, allow any other thoughts to simply roll by without paying any attention to them 4. Once you are completely full of air, pause, then gently and completely exhale 5. When you are empty of air, pause for a second, then return to a deep inhale Follow this pattern for 10 breaths. The game is to remain fully centered on the breathing experience and to not become distracted by passing thoughts or things you may need to do. Give yourself a pat on the back when you can make it through 10 breaths without becoming distracted! **Benefits: Improves concentration, improves body awareness, and de-stresses the mind** **Meditation 2: Basic Pranayama** Pranayama is a whole class of yogic breathing exercises. Pranayama is for the breath as yoga is for the body. Historically, pranayama is practiced after yoga, so make sure to do your stretches before you practice this! I am in no way trained or certified in Pranayama so if you are interested in learning more, find a local yoga teacher that is well-versed in this practice! For each of these exercises, inhaling and exhaling is through the nose, with number 6 being the only exception. Take your time with each of these exercises, they should never be painful. Try to breathe from your abdomen. 1. Gentle Inhale – Pause- Gentle Exhale 2. Gentle Inhale – Pause – Forceful Exhale 3. Inhale through Right Nostril – Exhale through Left Nostril 4. Inhale through Left Nostril – Exhale through Right Nostril 5. Gentle Inhale – Exhale while gently pressing both Nostrils (should create a “buzzing” sound) 6. Gentle inhale – Pause – Exhale through Mouth while creating the “Om” sound (you should create the sound from deep within your chest, it should gently vibrate your throat and feel good) **Benefits: Improves lung function and capacity, reduces anxiety and stress, and can energize you for the day!** https://i.postimg.cc/XYLL1zjg/brian-mann-Qmbp26bep6k-unsplash.jpg Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@bmann?utm\_content=creditCopyText&utm\_medium=referral&utm\_source=unsplash">Brian Mann</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/woman-walking-on-shore-Qmbp26bep6k?utm\_content=creditCopyText&utm\_medium=referral&utm\_source=unsplash">Unsplash</a> **Night Meditation: “Walkthrough of the Day”** I have had a life-long journey of working to improve my memory. When I stopped smoking weed in college, I discovered that my memory was very weak. I started researching [herbs and foods](https://medium.com/@daoofliving/boosting-brain-health-foods-and-practices-to-enhance-memory-7bfb1043bedc) that could help me to regain my ability to remember. The supplements helped, but I realized that if I wanted a better memory, I needed to practice remembering! That is when I started practicing the following meditation every night, and my memory has improved by leaps and bounds. With this meditation, try to recreate your day in images, in sequential order. This will be difficult at first but the more often you practice, the easier it will become. Eventually you will be able to see your whole day on ‘fast forward’ with an increasing number of details included. 1. Settle yourself with some stretching or a “Follow your Breath” meditation 2. Picture what you did at the beginning of the day 3. Then picture what you did next, moment by moment 4. Start with the big events such as “First I got out of bed, then I made breakfast, then I got dressed” 5. As you practice, the smaller, in-between details will be included. 6. Take your time and remember the whole day up until you sat down for this meditation. 7. When you have arrived at the present, ‘close’ the day, put a mental period at the end, or an imaginary lid on the box. This final step will enclose the day into a mental box so that it is easier for your brain to catalogue it and remember it later. It will also help to prepare you for sleep. **Sleep is where all of the important memory-preserving functions happen.** By ‘closing the day’ you are telling yourself that the day is done and now it is time to relax and sleep. **Benefits: Improved memory! Better sleep, improved concentration, reduces anxiety and stress.** **Conclusion:** Meditation is a simple and fun practice that has a limitless number of applications. Practicing meditation can reduce stress and anxiety, improve concentration and memory, and even make sleeping easier! Start with short and easy meditations and see the benefits build over time. | body | **TLDR: Eating a small dinner two hours before going to bed will help you sleep deeper, resulting in health benefits.** “Eat Breakfast like a king, Lunch like a prince, Dinner like a pauper” https://i.postimg.cc/fb7zD7yZ/stephanie-mccabe-U3zasaq-WD-I-unsplash.jpg Photo by [Juliette F](https://unsplash.com/@julfe?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash) on [Unsplash](https://unsplash.com/photos/white-and-green-ceramic-plates-on-brown-wooden-dining-table-fb0_wj2MZk4?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash) [Sleep hygiene](https://medium.com/@daoofliving/4-ways-to-better-sleep-761637c00055) is the most important part of insuring deep, restful slumber. Our body craves regularity and will try to form a pattern out of the chaos of our daily lives. For example, **our digestive system loves regularity**. So much so that your body will start preparing for food at scheduled meal times by increasing stomach acid and making your ‘mouth water’ (there are loads of enzymes in your saliva!) This scheduling system of your body is called the circadian rhythm, I covered it in this article: [https://medium.com/@daoofliving/unlocking-the-science-and-wisdom-of-your-bodys-internal-clock-circadian-rhythms-and-chinese-14e836ee9455](https://medium.com/@daoofliving/unlocking-the-science-and-wisdom-of-your-bodys-internal-clock-circadian-rhythms-and-chinese-14e836ee9455) Keeping your meals on a schedule is so important that scientists have conducted [multiple studies](https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/proceedings-of-the-nutrition-society/article/meal-irregularity-and-cardiometabolic-consequences-results-from-observational-and-intervention-studies/1969DB83C64B09E221A4B8929B7D8A8C) and have found that eating regular meals for just two weeks: · Lowers peak insulin · Lowers total and LDL-cholesterol (From Proceedings of the Nutrition Society) **From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, sleep is not restful while digestion is occurring.** When we are digesting, a large amount of our blood and attention is focused on breaking down that food and assimilating it into the body. If we cannot digest and nourish our body, we will have a difficult time living and thriving. Because this is such a huge job, we should give it the respect it deserves. **“When walking, walk. When eating, eat.” – Zen Proverb** In our modern busy lives we think that we are operating at peak efficiency when we multitask. We watch tv while we eat or read a book while listening to music. This is not how our bodies work best. **Try this simple experiment**, next time you eat, resist the urge to scroll on your phone or be entertained by a show or book, just focus on the food, chewing it well. Notice how much fuller you feel much sooner this time! When we split our attention, we cannot fully reap the benefits of either activity, rendering the benefits of both activities useless. **The same is true for going to bed after digesting dinner!** Instead of eating right before bed, or falling prey to the dreaded ‘midnight snack,’ give yourself time (about 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your metabolism) to digest your (small) dinner so that your body can fully rest. When you go to bed after digesting, your body can restore itself. In Chinese Medicine, sleep is when our Yang (active) descends into Yin (inactive). With digestion done for the day, your Yang can fully descend into deep, rejuvenating sleep. Having a clear stretch of time between dinner and breakfast allows the body to make repairs, reduce [inflammation](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/fasting-benefits#how-to-start), and solidify memories. **Benefits of getting deep sleep:** · Improved immune system · Muscle repair and growth · Hormone regulation · Healthy heart · Memories are moved to long-term storage · Increased energy Source: https://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/deep-sleep-deep-clean **Conclusion:** Every system of our body runs on a cycle. Every organ-system has its job and performs their job better when they do not have to work at the same time as another organ. By separating digesting and sleeping, we can reap considerable benefits from improved assimilation and deeper sleep. Remember to eat “Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper” and to give yourself at least 30 minutes to 2 hours between dinner and bedtime. | body | Emery: “Hi good morning! What did you have for breakfast today?” Patient: “I wanted something healthy but light so I had one of those ‘Green Machine’ smoothies and some toast.” Emery: “I’m sorry, which part of that was healthy?” Patient: “The Green smoothie! It has all sorts of vitamins in it, and it is fruit and vegetables!” Emery: “Let’s talk about this a bit more…” **Juice is garbage.** **https://i.postimg.cc/D06HdZ6P/zlatko-duric-U4-Qk-DQW84sg-unsplash.jpg** Photo by [Zlatko Đurić](https://unsplash.com/@zladuric?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash) on [Unsplash](https://unsplash.com/photos/fruits-and-vegetable-in-clear-glass-jar-U4QkDQW84sg?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash) One of the most common current “healthy habits” is drinking juice, whether that is the classic OJ, a “juice cleanse,” or smoothies. Juice is all the addictive, yummy parts of fruit in one convenient glass. You get to jump past the labor of chewing the fruit to get to the sugar, how nice is that! “But Emery, juice has lots of vitamins in it. That makes it healthy!” Let us look at some facts and see how healthy it is. The American Heart Association, our largest investor in cardiovascular disease research, [recommends](https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/carbohydrates/added-sugar-in-the-diet/#:~:text=The%20AHA%20suggests%20a%20stricter,of%20sugar%29%20for%20most%20men.) no more than 24 grams of sugar per day for most women and 36 grams for most men. Compare those numbers with an **10oz bottle of apple juice** from the renowned company Welch’s: Calories: 130 **Total Sugars: 33g** Includes 0g added sugars Fiber: 0g Protein 0g Calcium 30mg Iron 0.8mg **Potassium 370mg** **Vitamin C 90mg** Source: https://www.welchs.com/juices/100-percent/apple/ At first you may be thinking “See Emery! There is so much Vitamin C in juice! That makes it healthy” I’m sorry, but nope. The vitamin C content in this juice, and in many juices, is added in as Ascorbic Acid. Ascorbic acid is a cheaply manufactured, synthetic version of Vitamin C that is derived from Genetically Modified Corn. There was a long battle to convince the public and the medical world that Ascorbic Acid is synonymous with naturally occurring Vitamin C. That debate is not the purpose of this article. **My point is that the above juice would contain zero vitamin C unless it was added in artificially in order to make the product seem healthier.** So what we are left with is a bottle of sugar that is well above the daily recommended limit for total sugar. You might as well throw 2.5 tablespoons of sugar straight into your mouth and save yourself the time it takes to drink the whole bottle of juice! **Because juice is a very high sugar-containing food, it plays havoc with your blood sugar.** In nature, the sugar in fruit is buffered by the fiber of the fruit. By removing the fiber during juicing, you are left with a straight shot of sugar which causes a huge blood sugar spike and crash. Over time, frequent and ongoing blood sugar spiking can lead to diabetes, with the issues that comes with that: neuropathy, loss of eyesight, heart, and kidney problems. Put your chompers to work and eat the apple instead! **Nutrition facts of one medium sized apple:** Calories: 104 **Sugars: 20.8g** **Fiber: 4.8g** Carbohydrates: 27.6g Protein: 0.5g **Potassium: 214mg** **Vitamin C: 9.2mg** **Vitamin A: 6mcg** Source: [https://www.verywellfit.com/apples-nutrition-facts-calories-and-their-health-benefits-4117992](https://www.verywellfit.com/apples-nutrition-facts-calories-and-their-health-benefits-4117992) Here we can see that by eating the whole apple, we can slow that huge blood sugar spike with the 5 grams of fiber that is already built in! Granted, fruit is still a very sugary food, but if we are going to eat sugar, it is better for us to eat the natural stuff. The fiber that comes with fruit feeds the bacteria in our gut microbiome so that our digestion is improved. The microbiome is incredibly complex and yet, incredibly simple. If you think of what “microbiome” means (a very small, living environment), we can figure out what it means to us. **A very small, living environment…like a garden!** What does it take to grow a successful garden? · You need to know the sunlight, water, and soil requirements of the plants. · You need to be on the look-out for bugs or weeds that want to take over the garden. · You need to be consistent with caring for the plants. All too often we treat our bodies like a machine, we put in whatever edible thing we can find and hope that it keeps the engine running. When we drink juice instead of eating fruit, we are choosing to feed the sugar hungry bacteria in our gut and ignoring the healthy, vitamin producing bacteria that needs fiber to thrive. Health is a moving target that is far easier to catch when we treat our bodies with the same gentle care that we give our plant gardens. Next time you are itching for a glass of orange juice, stop and ask yourself “What am I trying to grow in my microbiome? The weeds or the healthful plants?” _Nerd Corner:_ _Check out this super cool study on the Gut-Brain Axis, its all about how our microbiome affects our entire physiology!_ [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6469458/\_](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6469458/) Check out my store of silly takes on Chinese Medicine here: [TCM-Propaganda.redbubble.com](TCM-Propaganda.redbubble.com) [https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/healthier-gut-microbiome-eat-more-fruit-vegetables](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/healthier-gut-microbiome-eat-more-fruit-vegetables) [http://www.annclinlabsci.org/content/32/2/193.long](http://www.annclinlabsci.org/content/32/2/193.long) [https://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/beware-of-ascorbic-acid-synthetic/](https://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/beware-of-ascorbic-acid-synthetic/) |

"body": "Emery: “Hi good morning! What did you have for breakfast today?”\n\nPatient: “I wanted something healthy but light so I had one of those ‘Green Machine’ smoothies and some toast.”\n\nEmery: “I’m sorry, which part of that was healthy?”\n\nPatient: “The Green smoothie! It has all sorts of vitamins in it, and it is fruit and vegetables!”\n\nEmery: “Let’s talk about this a bit more…”\n\n**Juice is garbage.**\n\n**https://i.postimg.cc/D06HdZ6P/zlatko-duric-U4-Qk-DQW84sg-unsplash.jpg**\n\nPhoto by [Zlatko Đurić](https://unsplash.com/@zladuric?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash) on [Unsplash](https://unsplash.com/photos/fruits-and-vegetable-in-clear-glass-jar-U4QkDQW84sg?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash)\n\nOne of the most common current “healthy habits” is drinking juice, whether that is the classic OJ, a “juice cleanse,” or smoothies.\n\nJuice is all the addictive, yummy parts of fruit in one convenient glass. You get to jump past the labor of chewing the fruit to get to the sugar, how nice is that!\n\n“But Emery, juice has lots of vitamins in it. That makes it healthy!”\n\nLet us look at some facts and see how healthy it is.\n\nThe American Heart Association, our largest investor in cardiovascular disease research, [recommends](https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/carbohydrates/added-sugar-in-the-diet/#:~:text=The%20AHA%20suggests%20a%20stricter,of%20sugar%29%20for%20most%20men.) no more than 24 grams of sugar per day for most women and 36 grams for most men.\n\nCompare those numbers with an **10oz bottle of apple juice** from the renowned company Welch’s:\n\nCalories: 130\n\n**Total Sugars: 33g**\n\nIncludes 0g added sugars\n\nFiber: 0g\n\nProtein 0g\n\nCalcium 30mg\n\nIron 0.8mg\n\n**Potassium 370mg**\n\n**Vitamin C 90mg**\n\nSource: https://www.welchs.com/juices/100-percent/apple/\n\nAt first you may be thinking “See Emery! There is so much Vitamin C in juice! That makes it healthy” I’m sorry, but nope.\n\nThe vitamin C content in this juice, and in many juices, is added in as Ascorbic Acid. Ascorbic acid is a cheaply manufactured, synthetic version of Vitamin C that is derived from Genetically Modified Corn. There was a long battle to convince the public and the medical world that Ascorbic Acid is synonymous with naturally occurring Vitamin C. That debate is not the purpose of this article.\n\n**My point is that the above juice would contain zero vitamin C unless it was added in artificially in order to make the product seem healthier.**\n\nSo what we are left with is a bottle of sugar that is well above the daily recommended limit for total sugar.\n\nYou might as well throw 2.5 tablespoons of sugar straight into your mouth and save yourself the time it takes to drink the whole bottle of juice!\n\n**Because juice is a very high sugar-containing food, it plays havoc with your blood sugar.**\n\nIn nature, the sugar in fruit is buffered by the fiber of the fruit. By removing the fiber during juicing, you are left with a straight shot of sugar which causes a huge blood sugar spike and crash.\n\nOver time, frequent and ongoing blood sugar spiking can lead to diabetes, with the issues that comes with that: neuropathy, loss of eyesight, heart, and kidney problems.\n\nPut your chompers to work and eat the apple instead!\n\n**Nutrition facts of one medium sized apple:**\n\nCalories: 104\n\n**Sugars: 20.8g**\n\n**Fiber: 4.8g**\n\nCarbohydrates: 27.6g\n\nProtein: 0.5g\n\n**Potassium: 214mg**\n\n**Vitamin C: 9.2mg**\n\n**Vitamin A: 6mcg**\n\nSource: [https://www.verywellfit.com/apples-nutrition-facts-calories-and-their-health-benefits-4117992](https://www.verywellfit.com/apples-nutrition-facts-calories-and-their-health-benefits-4117992)\n\nHere we can see that by eating the whole apple, we can slow that huge blood sugar spike with the 5 grams of fiber that is already built in!\n\nGranted, fruit is still a very sugary food, but if we are going to eat sugar, it is better for us to eat the natural stuff.\n\nThe fiber that comes with fruit feeds the bacteria in our gut microbiome so that our digestion is improved. | body | Sciatica pain is both incredibly common and often incorrectly self-diagnosed. Sciatica is: _“pain affecting the back, hip, and outer side of the leg, __**caused by compression of a spinal nerve root in the lower back**__, often owing to degeneration of an intervertebral disk.” _(Oxford Dictionary) The key in this definition is “caused by compression of a spinal nerve root in the lower back.” Many people experience pain that radiates down their leg and automatically call it “Sciatica.” While sciatica is very common, there are many causes of back pain that range from simple muscle tension to true nerve compression. https://i.postimg.cc/MH6g3sbV/chuttersnap-Oij-Vd-M3-Zx4-I-unsplash.jpg Photo by [CHUTTERSNAP](https://unsplash.com/@chuttersnap?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash) on [Unsplash](https://unsplash.com/photos/white-pasta-on-white-paper-OijVdM3Zx4I?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash) **Let us first look at true sciatica.** Treating sciatica requires a multi-faceted approach, starting with sorting out why the nerve root is being compressed in the first place. Possibilities include: • Vertebra degradation • Herniated or slipped disk • Bone spur or abnormal growth • Injury ([Source](https://www.pennmedicine.org/for-patients-and-visitors/patient-information/conditions-treated-a-to-z/sciatica)) What can make sciatica worse/flare up: • Certain movements that put pressure on the nerve (i.e. bending over) • Sitting too long • Weight Gain • Pregnancy **A key to alleviating the pain of true sciatica is acupuncture.** Both distal and local acupuncture can alleviate the pain but also help the nerve to become un-pinched. Acupuncture in this situation works by activating pain-relieving endorphins and increasing blood flow to the area. A big concern with any pinched nerve is the eventual side-effects of nerve damage: neuropathy (nerve death). This is experienced as less sensation in the area, meaning that you could stub your toe and not feel it! This is dangerous as not being aware of your fingers and toes could cause you to get hurt, get an infection, and lose a digit. Thankfully, acupuncture helps with that too! Remember how acupuncture stimulates blood flow to relieve pain? In Chinese Medical theory, our blood contains our consciousness, so wherever blood flows, our awareness goes with it. Blood also warms and activates our limbs. So by receiving acupuncture, people with neuropathy can recover nerve function through the return of blood to the once-forgotten area. > _Nerd Corner_ > _Check out this _[_study _](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17355547/)_from 2007 where 76% of patients with peripheral neuropathy improved over one year with regular acupuncture treatment, while only 15% of the control group improved. _ > _Or this _[_study _](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7341378/)_from 2020 where patients with chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy had significant improvement while the control group, that was treated with gabapentin and vitamin B1, showed no improvement._ Low back pain is by far the most common complaint we treat as acupuncturists. There are dozens of points on the hands and feet that all work to alleviate low back pain. Not to mention the herbal prescriptions that can dispel the pain and continue the treatment long after you have left the acupuncture office. If you have sciatica pain, I highly recommend looking up your nearest acupuncture clinic, find one that is either covered by your insurance or a [community ](https://pocacoop.com/places/)acupuncture clinic. By receiving regular acupuncture, you can roll back the clock on nerve damage and relieve the pain of sciatica! **Things people call sciatica, but are not actually sciatica.** Often, people will have muscular imbalances in the glutes and hips from too much sitting and not enough exercise. This can cause strange activations and deactivations of muscles in this area, leading to pain that can radiate down the legs. Since many people are without health insurance, they never check to see if the pain they are experiencing is from a nerve root compression, so they call it sciatica and live with it. **Muscular imbalances are easy to relieve in the short term, and take a lot of work in the long term.** In the short term, an acupuncturist can needle some of the most common pain-relieving points in the glute/hip area to assess where the imbalance is located. At some point the acupuncturist will poke around for “Ahshi points,” which are points that make you say “Ah! Right there!” When these points are needled the muscle releases and resets, resolving the issue. That is until the muscle winds back up. In the long term, the patient should, with the guidance of a physical therapist, adjust their lifestyle and exercise in order to rebalance their muscles to avoid future pain. Doing this will lock in the adjustments that the acupuncturist has made on the offending muscles and extend the pain relief. If you are one of the 619 million people [worldwide ](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/low-back-pain#:~:text=In%202020%2C%20low%20back%20pain,expansion%20and%20ageing%20(1%29.)with low back pain, please do yourself a favor and walk, run, or crawl your way to your local acupuncturist and get some relief! | body | I'm very sorry to hear about your grandfather, I hope you and your family are doing okay. I agree with you about chemo not being a blanket remedy. The unfortunate reality is that clinics make a lot of money off of the medicine they sell people, even if its not the best medicine for that particular person. Medicine across all traditions in the modern world suffer from a severe lack of insight into the specific circumstances of the individual. There are stories of the ancient Feng Shi from 8,000 years ago that were so well versed in astrology, calendar science, feng shui, herbology and acupuncture that they would give their patients instructions like "stand on one foot while drinking this herbal tea at this time in the morning while facing north-east" and the patients tumors would disappear. Nowadays everybody gets the same medication for the same condition and we're surprised when it doesn't work.. |

| body | This is all so interesting!! I wish that acupuncture was more accessible to the public! I have a very conflicted opinion of chemo treatment, I don't even know if it should be called a therapy -- though I agree that it *can* save lives, I also feel that it is a blanket remedy that isn't suitable for everyone. My 88 year old Grandfather just died a few months ago from the side-affects of chemo treatment recommended by a private cancer center. In the end he had a very disastrous last few weeks and suffered several strokes, and the hospital we ended up taking him to thought that he should have never been treated with chemo to begin with at his advanced age. He of course would have died eventually but the chemo weakened him so much, caused the strokes, and he lost mobility and ability to take care of himself within months when previously he had been very active and fit despite (unknowingly) living with a slow growing cancer. |

| body | Procrastination is an endless habit that is easy to fall in to and difficult to climb out of. Despite its difficulty, procrastination can be defeated by learning why you keep putting off your goals. With a few easy adjustments, any task can be adjusted to better bring about its achievement. **First off, why do we procrastinate?** Procrastination occurs at either end of the bell curve used in the Yerkes-Dodson law of psychology. In this law/theory, optimal performance is achieved at the balance point between low stress and high stress (or arousal-motivation). Essentially, if a task is low stress or is boring to you, you will not be motivated to complete it. On the other end, if you are too stressed about a task, you will be in the fight-flight-freeze response and you will not be able to complete the task. https://i.postimg.cc/c1Q9ZTx7/599594-What-the-Yerkes-Dodson-Law-Says-About-Stress-and-Performance1296x728-header-body-202009210529.jpg From:https://www.healthline.com/health/yerkes-dodson-law#how-the-law-works **How to avoid procrastination?** Because procrastination occurs at both ends of this curve, the trick is to nudge the task towards the middle of the curve, into the optimal motivation zone, in order to accomplish what you want to do. In the low motivation zone, you can motivate yourself to complete your task by: • Give yourself a deadline • Have an accountability partner (a friend or peer that checks in to see if you have completed the task) • Increase the difficulty of the task • Delegate the task to somebody else In the high stress zone, you can reduce the task to make it more achievable by: • Breaking the task into smaller tasks • Spreading the task out over time • Adjust the expected result of the task • Outsource the entire task or parts of it to somebody else With these tips, you can adjust the motivation around a task in either direction and cut down on procrastination. **What does this look like in practice?** With any project or habit, at the beginning we may jump in with both feet and be excited with the novelty of the situation. Once we get past the honeymoon phase, we may feel that we are either doing too much, or the task has become boring. Instead of throwing out the whole project or habit, adjust it! For example, let us say you want to write your first novel. On the first day you are very excited and you spend three hours typing away. By the third day of this, you cannot see the finish line and begin questioning if this book will ever be finished. You feel like this project is too much and you contemplate burning all the evidence so no one knows about your abandoned novel. Before you light that match, **try spreading the work out over time**. Instead of writing for three hours a day, try writing for 30 minutes at the same time every day. By the end of a week you will have spent 3.5 hours writing consistently. As the weeks drag on you start to wonder again why you started this project and dream of the day it will be done. You start to lose your motivation for your daily 30 minutes of writing and it starts to dwindle down to 10 minutes a day. Do not give up! **Set a deadline** that you want to be done with the whole book (you can even set smaller deadlines for sections/chapters to keep yourself moving forward). Having this deadline as a tangible end point will motivate you to continue writing every day until it is done. By the end of this process, you will have conquered a feat that most people only dream of, your very own original novel! ___ Support the author and buy a coffee! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/emerycastex |

| body | The modern crusade against the scourge of cancer leaves much to be desired. Chemotherapy is lifesaving and has helped many people to become cancer-free. However, chemotherapy, by its very nature, is devastating to the body it is trying to help. https://i.postimg.cc/NFrg6ckh/katherine-hanlon-Qgcdt-M9r-A5s-unsplash.jpg Photo by [Katherine Hanlon](https://unsplash.com/@tinymountain?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash) on [Unsplash](https://unsplash.com/photos/person-holding-silver-and-white-pen-QgcdtM9rA5s?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash) Chemotherapy works to destroy the rapidly growing cells in cancer. However, the medications used in chemo do not know the difference between healthy or cancerous cells, so many people become sick while on chemotherapy. This can be seen in a range of side effects: • feeling tired most of the time • feeling and being sick • hair loss • an increased risk of getting infections • a sore mouth • dry, sore, or itchy skin • diarrhea or constipation ([source](https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/chemotherapy/)) While it may be necessary to undergo chemotherapy to become cancer free, facing the side effects can be daunting. With Chinese medicine, especially acupuncture, many of the side effects of chemotherapy can be turned down. Many popular insurance companies will now approve ongoing acupuncture treatments for chemotherapy related side effects. **Including these therapies into your treatment plan can be incredibly relieving and can make an unpleasant experience tolerable.** Acupuncture has been slowly entering the modern medical paradigm over the last few decades. As the tangible results of this ancient medicine become recognized by modern people, it is subjected to more scrutiny to better understand what it can do for us. **Randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that acupuncture is effective for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Research studies also suggest acupuncture may be helpful in managing cancer-related pain, chemotherapy-related low white blood cell count, cancer fatigue, and radiation-induced dry mouth** ([source](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2642987/)). How amazing is it that sticking small metal needles into specific points on a body can alleviate most (if not all) of the major side effects of cancer treatment? **Unfortunately, acupuncture in the United States is largely out of reach for most people.** Insurance companies are slow to change and typically only the more expensive policies cover acupuncture. And if they do cover it, they limit the number of visits to a few treatments per month, which is not how acupuncture works best. On the other hand, acupuncture education is expensive and the current mindset taught in schools is “white-coat acupuncture” wherein students are taught to find their place within the current medical professional -> insurance company cycle to make a lot of money from acupuncture. **The solution to this conundrum is to locate your local community acupuncture clinic.** Community acupuncture is centered on a sliding payment scale which reduces the financial barrier to accessing its benefits. Regular and consistent treatments is the best method to seeing long term effects from acupuncture. With community acupuncture, people can afford to get acupuncture every day of the week without going into debt or requiring the permission of an insurance company. If a patient undergoing chemotherapy can access a community acupuncture clinic, they can effectively wipe out the worst of their side effects. Thankfully, there is a nation-wide network of community acupuncture clinics that are devoted to providing regular and low-cost healthcare to their communities. **Find a clinic near you here**: [https://pocacoop.com/places/](https://pocacoop.com/places/) Support the author and buy a coffee! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/emerycastex ___ Sources: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/chemotherapy/ https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/cam/patient/acupuncture-pdq#:~:text=Fatigue%20is%20a%20common%20symptom,compared%20to%20standard%20care%20alone. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2642987/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7341378/ |
