Ahlakçılar bilimciler tarafından duygusallıkla, bilimciler de ahlakçılar tarafından acımasızlıkla suçlanır. Genelde konu her açıdan değerlendirildikten sonra ortaya atılan şu sorudan sonra derin bir sessizlik olur : ‘’Sen bir insan olarak hayatta kalmak istiyor musun, istemiyor musun?’’ Takdir edersiniz ki bu soru hayvan deneylerini destekleyen bilimcilerin sorusudur.  Hiç şüphesiz hepimiz birer insan olarak hayatta kalmak için yaşıyoruz. Hayatta kalmak tüm canlıların temel güdüsüdür ve her şey ama her şey sadece hayatta kalmak içindir. Bu uğurda da her yol mubahtır. Öyle mi?\n\nBu sorunun tıkadığı yeri açmaya çalışmaya başlamadan önce bir sorunumuz daha var : söz konusu insan sağlığı olduğunda Hipokrat yemini edilirken kol kola girip gayet samimi pozlar veren bilimciler ve ahlakçılar neden hayvan deneyleri dendiğinde birden bire karşı karşıya gelirler?\n\nÇünkü bilimciler bilimin sadece insana değil, doğaya hizmet etmek için olduğunu unutur ve hiçbir ahlakçı bunu hatırlatmak girişiminde bulunmaz çünkü az önce bilimcilerin sorduğu insanın hayatta kalma arzusu üzerine derin düşüncelere dalmışlardır. Onlar düşünedursunlar biz biraz ilaç ve kozmetik sektöründen bahsedelim.\nİlaç sektörü, gerek üretim hacmi gerekse ticaret kapasitesiyle ekonominin en kritik sektörlerinden biridir. İlaç şirketleri için rekabet gücü büyük ölçüde geliştirilmiş orijinal ilaçlar ile bu ilaçlar için alınmış olan patentlerle belirlenmektedir. Bu patentlerden elde edilen gelirler o kadar yüksektir ki bir ülkenin ekonomik olarak gelişimine de azımsanamayacak katkıları olur. Fakat söz konusu ilaç olduğunda koskocaman bir sektörün kar amacını bir kenara bırakır ve sadece bu ilaçların iyileştirici özelliklerine odaklanır bilimciler ve bunu yaparken de ahlakçıları duygusallıkla suçlarlar. Oysa ki günümüz teknolojisinde bilgisayar sistemleri ve yapay hücre gibi bir çok yöntem kullanılarak hayvan testleri tamamen bitirilebilir. Firmaların hayvanlar üzerinde deneyler yapmaya devam etmesinin nedeni maliyetinin daha düşük olmasıdır. Zaten hayvan deneylerinden elde edilen veriler değerlendirildiğinde de deneylerin oldukça kullanışsız olduğunu görüyoruz. Sonuçların yüzde 90ı, insanlar için kullanılamaz bilgilerinden ibarettir. Dr. Austin, hayvan deneyleri ile ilgili şunu der : ‘’ Birçok nedenden ötürü, bilim insanları da birçok olgu üzerinde çalışırken hayvan denekler yerine başka bir yol kullanabilmeyi istiyorlar.’’ Bu sorunun çözümü için çığır açacak adımı ise Harvard Üniversitesi Mühendislik Enstitüsünden Dr. Donald Ingber attı. Bir İnsan akciğeri imar etti. Gerçeğinden neredeyse ayırt edilemeyen ve insan akciğerinin tüm fonksiyonlarını bir mikroçip yardımıyla yerine getirebilen bu yapay organın ilaç üretiminde kullanılması, kullanışsız hayvan deneylerinden çok daha etkili olacakken çok daha pahalı bir yöntem. Fakat ilaç geliştiren şirketlerin amacı insanları daha fazla yaşatmak değil daha fazla kar etmektir. Yine de bu noktada bilimcilerin objektif değerlendirme ölçütlerinden şaşmaları anlayışla karşılanabilir olsa da durum kozmetik sektöründe çok daha vahimdir. Burada ahlakçılar hayatta kalma sorunu düşüncelerinden uyanırlar çünkü ortada bir hayatta kalma sorunu yok. Artık sorun saçlarını boyamanın, yaşlanma karşıtı kremlerin, rujlar, ojeler sürmenin gerekliliğidir ve ahlakçıların eli ilaçlar hakkındaki tartışmada olduğundan çok daha güçlüdür. \n\nTıkanma noktası : Hayatta kalmak istiyor musun?\n\nBilimcilerin ortaya attığı hayatta kalma sorunsalı en ilkel güdümüze göndermede bulunur. Bu güdünün en belirgin olduğu yer hiç kuşkusuz ölümle burun buruna geldiğimiz yerdir. Her halde gündelik hayatımızda ‘’bunu yaparsam ömrüm kısalır’’ deyip yapmayı istediğimiz şeyden vazgeçtiğimiz çok azdır. İnsan kendi ölümünü bile yeterince yaklaşmadan kabullenemezken, bir gün ömrümüzü uzatmak için ihtiyacımız olacak düşüncesi ile işkence laboratuvarları kurulmasını makul karşılamak ikiyüzlülük değil de nedir? Kaldı ki hayatta kalma güdüsü sadece insana ait değildir. Fakat demek bazı bilim insanları kendilerinden bir okyanus uzaklığında yaşayan insanların hayatta kalma güdülerini tatmin etmek için yoğun çaba harcarlarken hayvanların hayatta kalma güdülerini unutmuş olmalılar. Aslında denek hayvanlarının ölmesi onlara yapılan işkenceleri düşündükçe her halde kurtuluştur. Galiba bu yüzden onların hayatta kalmasını umursamıyorlar (!)\n\nPeki hayatta kalma arzusunu biraz daha genişten alıp neslini devam ettirme arzusuna uzanalım. Hayatta kalmak sadece nefes alıyor olmak değil elbette. Soyunu devam ettirme isteğini de içine alır. Basit bir sıra izleyerek en ilkel olandan günümüzün gündelik ihtiyaçlarına varabiliriz. Soyumuzu devam ettirmek için çiftleşmemiz gerekir. İlkel hayatta gayet kolay:  topluluğun en sağlıklı bireyini seç ve topluluğun en güçlüsü olduğunu ispatla ve onunla çiftleşerek topluluğa yeni bireyler kazandır. Günümüzde ise çiftleşip yeni bireyler üreteceğimiz insanları seçerken çok çeşitli parametreler var önümüzde. Çünkü artık sadece sağlıklı ve güçlü bireyler değil; bunların yanında, zeki, güzel, refah içinde başarılı bir hayat sürmesini istediğimiz bireyler dünyaya getirmek istiyoruz. Bunları dünyaya getireceğimiz zeki, güzel, başarılı ve sağlıklı bireylerin bitmek tükenmek bilmeyen ihtiyaçlarını karşılamak zorundayız ki toplumun modern anlamda en iyisi olduğumuzu ispatlayalım. Hal böyle olunca hayatta kalmak için sadece ömrümüzü uzatacak ilaçlara değil her şeye ihtiyacımız var. Öyle ki evlilik teklifi etmek üzere çıktığınız romantik akşam yemeğinizdeki 1. Kalite şarabın hayvanlar üzerinde denenmesi pek ala makul karşılanabilir. Son model telefonunuzun yapılmasında kullanılan kimyasalların hayvanların derilerinde denenmesinde de bir sıkıntı yok. Kozmetik ürünlerin ne kadar hayati değere sahip olduğundan bahsetmeye bile gerek yok şu durumda. Çünkü hayatınızın en özel gecesine makyajsız gitmeniz partnerinizin sizin yeterince bakımlı olmadığınızı ve topluluğa bakımlı bireyler kazandıramayacağınızı düşünmesine sebep olabilir. Bu durumda soyunuzu sürdüremeyeceksiniz. Hayatta kalamayacağınız düşüncesi ile eşdeğer. \n\nYani ki söz konusu hayatta kalmaksa, bizi toplumun seçkin bireyleri gibi gösteren her materyale, ilaçlara olduğu kadar ihtiyacımız var. Ama ‘’hastalık’’ demagojisi yapmak çok daha kolay. Bu nedenle ‘’hayvan deneylerinin ilaç dışındaki şeylerin üretiminde kullanılmasına ben de karşıyım’’ denir. Böyle bir yaklaşım olamaz.
