| body | Here's my two cents for the evening. An athlete needs a coach. Hitting that level of performance, just isn't possible without some external voice pushing him further. And not only that, can one really reach high levels of performance while having an engaged executive mind? Maybe, or maybe not. I don't think most people can. Sure there are flow states, but flow does not involve high level strategies. At best it involves short term to mid term tactics. Now extrapolating this to life, peak performance requires coaching. And even basic performance requires coaching. Could a child athlete make it above the basics without a coach? 80% could not. So why do we put ourselves in these impossible positions as adults? I gave sales an earnest attempt, twice. The first time I had a good 5 day training, but zero coaching beyond that. The second time I had mediocre to bad coaching for several weeks from management, but ultimately I fell flat. Now, did I fail? Yes. Was there more that I could have done? Obviously, but the array of activity I could have done to get that success was rather narrow. I'm not sure I could have seen it without more time to learn, or without an actual coach. Anyways that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Cheers! |

| body | Alright, well. Since I'm going to be taking these notes anyways, I figure it'd only make since to take them down here. What this legal research thing really comes down to is freelancing. There are two skills or pursuits that must manifest. The first is legal research. I must become good at this skill before my name gets out there and before I can even consider making money. The second is freelancing, and all the self-promotion, networking, and time management which that requires. # Working for Free I empathize with both sides of this coin. Any projects which take more than an afternoon, should be projects which I leverage. Either for traffic or for money. That said, there is likely a place for small tidbits of research that I share for nothing in return. # Who Now here's one that just came up as I started to write this: guest blogging, duh. Law blogs of professionals and students are a dime a dozen, for both videos and written mediums. Twitter, hive, mastodon, etc. So why not leverage those as well? # What An obvious challenge is that the person with a larger budget can always out-perform me. At least in quantity of research and the "turnkey" quality of that research. However, we are always on a level playing field with the matter of depth of understanding. Communicating this understanding may not be hard (while avoiding 'legal advice') but it needs to be considered. Whether the tidbits are put together with visual cues (as in a mind map) or whether I summarize my findings in a "Personal Opinions and Conclusions" section. For now I will be sticking to topics within the context of North Carolina. I don't want to get bogged down with the process of various jurisdictions. So that part of these topics will only become quicker and more polished. Which is great, it'll make it much easier when I can map out the potential directions a case may take. # Making Sense Based on the previous thought about conclusions, how do people best absorb legal information? Better yet, how best to present this stuff to someone who's going to use it as defense or offense? One option is to lay it out as a unidirectional map, another is a web of possibilities, and perhaps there are other structures. With these options, the best way to do it is probably like video game designers handle their storytelling. And in this case I can cater it to the capabilities of the reader. Like if I got contacted by a serious pot-head: No matter how much effort I put in, or how earnestly I try to help him with some bogus charge, if he's in the clouds all the time, what can I do? Then again, if the necessary solution isn't straight forward, and the defendant lacks the capability, I should probably just walk away. So, back to the structures, we have unidirectional set of instructions, a web of possibilities, a tree that branches with the major choices, a set of potential plays, or just an educational dive into the laws surrounding a topic. Those are all equally valid. # Credibility At least this part of things is pretty straightforward. Either I get some form of certification(s) or I get a lot of reviews and testimonials. There may be a middle ground. If a general and inexpensive research certification exists, I might bite. For the most part though, I think this has to be handled by referrals. Now I may try to augment generic reviews by being transparent about my process. Because, if I want to keep stepping up my game, having standards is necessary; and they can't just be qualitative standards. At some point there must be very specific and quantifiable ways of doing this work. # Prospecting as a Freelancer One of my larger challenges will be getting my face in front of people. Once I've cut my teeth on smaller projects, I won't feel out of place going to law firms to state what I do and how I can help. Until then, I'm going to make money off of confused individuals who need some guidance through the minefield of law. So how the heck do I connect? There are the obvious registries of criminals and listings of people in prison. The only problem with those, is that 80% of them are people I don't want to work with. Then again, there will still be diamonds in the rough. Public facing businesses are easy to pick out, the biggest challenge with them is that their challenges are much more complicated than those of a typical person. I still have the option of posting to physical bulletin boards and linking back to my website. Mass email campaigns are also an option. Time-consuming, but not impossible. As are physical mail campaigns. What if I put business cards next to the statutes in a library? Meh, that doesn't seem so potent either. Bulletin boards at courthouse? Oh wait! Visit court on my off days and leave business cards in the court room, make small talk, or pass it to people who would benefit. Not a perfect strategy, but that's something. # Prospecting an an Attorney This is the real truth of the matter. Because of the local nature of what I'm trying to do, I'm not prospecting as a freelancer per se. # Networking This one is harder for me to wrap my head around, yet possibly a bigger payoff. Could start with just emailing all the law offices in a 10 mile radius, state that I'm a newbie who is interested in the field, offer my time. | body | *Consider this a journal entry which I'm posting online instead of in private. Not unlike my other posts.* # Steps To Getting The Commission ### ( In North Carolina At Least ) 1) $70, 8 hour class. Scheduled. 2) Notary handbook, $30. Done. 3) Take the test. 4) Compile and Submit the Application, $50. 5) Buy a Stamp/Seal and a Journal of Notarial Acts. That's pretty much it. So the real question is what do I need to add in order to provide a polished service from day 1? Or rephrased, What tools to I need to prioritize so that I may push the scales in my favor and not come across as a chump on the first few jobs. # Restrictions. At the start I am only going to be available on the weekends, and in the evenings. But this may work in my favor. Getting traction with such limited time could be the limitation I need to get creative. # More Complete List of PreRequisites (To Match my Standards) 1) A high quality digital calling system. Supports mobile and home use, has great voicemail options. 2) Quality email service with programmable responses. Mostly needed for inquiries of people I haven't met, to assure them that their email went through and an expectation for when to expect a response. 3) A simple laptop to load with Linux, that has a very long battery life. Chromebook? 4) A decent wardrobe of understated business casual. Briefcase. 5) A clipboard with storage space inside, folder(s) for various paperwork. 6) A Virtual Private Server which is synced with my computers, and loaded with my [CRM](https://github.com/evandibona/dictionary-crm) software. 7) Go through and correct any obvious bugs with the CRM scripts 8) Determine what functions I need in a website. Try to set it up to be able to run for 2 years on autopilot. $60 + $45. 9) Finally, price it all out. # Digital / Copper Call System Well this is simple, the more advanced options are really only necessary for doing lots of cold calls. Which may have their place, but may only be leaving voicemails in various offices on the weekend. So for now, I think a Residential plan with Vonage is the way to go. $15 a month. # Email With Programmable Responses Proton Mail has an autorespond feature which can be combined with a filter to target certain emails, which is all I need. $55 a year. Under $5 a month. # Simple Laptop, With Battery Looks like Asus and Dell Latitudes are still near the top. Something used will be 200 to 300, luckily this is a secondary concern. This PC is still fine for doing stuff from home. Will revisit this once I have some more cash in hand. # Wardrobe Now this one is a bit less clear cut. I'll use pages like [this one](https://theadultman.com/fashion-and-style/business-casual-men/) for inspiration, but the reality is a bit more narrow. I can start hitting up thrift stores in the better areas and see if some good clothing pops up. The biggest challenge is heat. Whether I'm walking to/from my car in a neighborhood, or dealing with the temperature in my car that lacks AC. Perhaps investing in some linen items would be a worthwhile investment. Certainly will need to have fresh clothing before each job, and some decent v-neck tshirts. But ideally, I could avoid the button up shirts for now. Stick to classy polos, invest in [quality shoes](https://www.lemsshoes.com/products/mens-nine2five?variant=23655205306426), or visit a shoe store and try some desert boots, and try to find various items at thrift shops. Then a few choice purchases to fill in the gaps. Either way, start with a few outfits, and keep them organized in my closet, set aside from everything else. $250. Never mind, I can't squeeze new Lems shoes into this budget right now. Drop those, swap for thrifting/target shoes. $250 # VPS Could easily just use the one I've already got, just load up the CRM and get everything synced and configured. $5 a month. # Bag & Organizers Simple briefcase, clipboard, folders. $150. # Website. Now this topic needs a bit of thought, what do I actually need a website for? My contact information should certainly be cloaked somehow, it always surprises me how active those crawling bots are. Have a virtual / visual business card. Maybe as an svg to further confuse crawlers. But my purpose isn't only to offer a virtual business card. I want this website to offer a modicum of value to those whom I want to work with. Perhaps a tree of organized references for various topics. Eg, sorted links to advice on writing a will. Might be the simplest way to point people in the right direction without making myself liable as a private person or as a public official. Could also throw together a quick javascript calculator for estimating the cost of a document. Like a checklist. And then just stylistically replicate what other notary sites have. "body": "*Consider this a journal entry which I'm posting online instead of in private. Not unlike my other posts.*\n\n# Steps To Getting The Commission\n### ( In North Carolina At Least )\n\n1) $70, 8 hour class. Scheduled.\n2) Notary handbook, $30. Done. \n3) Take the test. \n4) Compile and Submit the Application, $50.\n5) Buy a Stamp/Seal and a Journal of Notarial Acts.\n\nThat's pretty much it. So the real question is what do I need to add in order to provide a polished service from day 1? Or rephrased, What tools to I need to prioritize so that I may push the scales in my favor and not come across as a chump on the first few jobs. \n\n# Restrictions. \n\nAt the start I am only going to be available on the weekends, and in the evenings. But this may work in my favor. Getting traction with such limited time could be the limitation I need to get creative. \n\n# More Complete List of PreRequisites (To Match my Standards)\n\n1) A high quality digital calling system. Supports mobile and home use, has great voicemail options. \n2) Quality email service with programmable responses. Mostly needed for inquiries of people I haven't met, to assure them that their email went through and an expectation for when to expect a response. \n3) A simple laptop to load with Linux, that has a very long battery life. Chromebook?\n4) A decent wardrobe of understated business casual. Briefcase.\n5) A clipboard with storage space inside, folder(s) for various paperwork. \n6) A Virtual Private Server which is synced with my computers, and loaded with my [CRM](https://github.com/evandibona/dictionary-crm) software. \n7) Go through and correct any obvious bugs with the CRM scripts\n8) Determine what functions I need in a website. Try to set it up to be able to run for 2 years on autopilot. $60 + $45. \n9) Finally, price it all out. \n\n# Digital / Copper Call System\n\nWell this is simple, the more advanced options are really only necessary for doing lots of cold calls. Which may have their place, but may only be leaving voicemails in various offices on the weekend. So for now, I think a Residential plan with Vonage is the way to go. \n\n$15 a month. \n\n# Email With Programmable Responses\n\nProton Mail has an autorespond feature which can be combined with a filter to target certain emails, which is all I need. $55 a year. Under $5 a month. \n\n# Simple Laptop, With Battery\n\nLooks like Asus and Dell Latitudes are still near the top. Something used will be 200 to 300, luckily this is a secondary concern. This PC is still fine for doing stuff from home. Will revisit this once I have some more cash in hand. \n\n# Wardrobe\n\nNow this one is a bit less clear cut. $250\n \n# VPS\n\nCould easily just use the one I've already got, just load up the CRM and get everything synced and configured. $5 a month. \n\n# Bag & Organizers\n\nSimple briefcase, clipboard, folders. $150.\n\n# Website. \n\nNow this topic needs a bit of thought, what do I actually need a website for? My contact information should certainly be cloaked somehow, it always surprises me how active those crawling bots are. Have a virtual / visual business card. Maybe as an svg to further confuse crawlers. \n\nBut my purpose isn't only to offer a virtual business card. I want this website to offer a modicum of value to those whom I want to work with. Perhaps a tree of organized references for various topics. Eg, sorted links to advice on writing a will. Might be the simplest way to point people in the right direction without making myself liable as a private person or as a public official. \n\nCould also throw together a quick javascript calculator for estimating the cost of a document. Like a checklist. \n\nAnd then just stylistically replicate what other notary sites have. An about section (perhaps with a generalized resume), faq, spot for testimonials. \n\nProbably around the same price as stated above, $120. \n\n# Totaling It Up\n\n$30 a month in the beginning. Possibly creeping towards $50 a month if things scale up. Or including business supplies. \n\nInitial investments are closer to between $520 and $850. \n\n\n",

| body | # Thoughts To Expand On * Craigslist? * Physical letters to community leaders or title holders. I'm sure that many people at courthouses or small businesses rarely receive handwritten correspondence, let alone from a private citizen about something positive. * In the same vein, I could cold DM a bunch of people online. # On Influencers Search around a 30 mile radius for every influence, person of title, employee, or node in the community. Start a spreadsheet and try to hit 1000. Ideally these are people, not entities, who I can write to or dm. This first series of letters would be simply to get a response, and then to gauge the sentiment after I get some. If I write letters to 1,000 people that comes to $500 of standard postage. Plus $40 of stationary, and 20,000 minutes of time. 330 hours or 150 days of letter writing in my spare time. Not really the best use of time, though perhaps I could profile these contacts once I've scraped them. ## Who Should I Try To Contact? I think librarians of any kind would be worth writing to. Particularly university ones. Somewhere on the list would be small business owners. Successful private people should be sought out for questions as well. Whatever reading and scholarship habits they have (or want to foster) would really be valuable to shape my plans around. Scraping as many relevant posts from instagram would be another good source. Noting the ones that are particularly relevant. Shoot, even relevant newspaper articles would be great for the authors and any other names mentioned. Any politicians involved in library or education reform. Local writers of all kinds would be interesting to hear from. # Online Surveying ## Professional Company On a quick search I can't really find any good examples of companies that operate this service. ## Ad-Based Funnel I can't imagine this being a good use of money for anything other than an email list. Who wants to be forced into a survey? <hr> So letter writing it is. |

| body | I know from listening to my Grandparents' stories about being young adults during the Great Depression most, if not all, arms length transactions between people were goods and services for goods and services and very little money exchanging hands. Move forward 92 years and we are fast approaching similar situations. Thanks for timing time out to read and look at my posts. Have a great weekend and safe Holiday! |

| body | really nice write up. I was completely unaware of this metric. It would be interesting to study what medium of exchange has replaced these spending habits. I've definitely seen (in more blue collar areas) lots of services being exchanged with little or no money changing hands. Wonder how far that goes in various places. |

| body | # Thoughts To Expand On * Craigslist? |
