      "body": "![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmPd3qhHe42NJ3F2LRXZWszgmhjhBmzKiwMjQqjqSmJHL7/image.png)\n\nBy definition, an [oligarchy](https://www.britannica.com/topic/oligarchy) is a \"government by the few\" where there is a chance that despotic power is displayed and utilized by a small, privileged bunch of people - usually for corrupt and selfish purpose. This word comes from a term used by the Greek philosopher Aristotle where he used the term oligarchia to designate a rule by a few bad people who are set apart from the rest of society by factors like religion, kinship, financial status, prestige, or language. These elites will act in the interest of their own class at the expense of other groups in society. As mentioned in Encyclopedia Britannica, the term oligarchy is very important in the contemporary United States of America since some political scientists argue that the modern version of the USA is an oligarchy since great wealth inequality allows corporations and particular financial elites to influence public policy to their advantage against the preferences of the majority.\n\nThere is a [study](http://www.princeton.edu/~mgilens/Gilens%20homepage%20materials/Gilens%20and%20Page/Gilens%20and%20Page%202014-Testing%20Theories%203-7-14.pdf) by Princeton University Prof Martin Gilens and Northwestern University Prof Benjamin I Page that says the United States is a civil oligarchy. The work Oligarchy by Jeffrey A. Winters also describes the United States today as such an entity & describes what a civil oligarchy [is](https://www.jstor.org/stable/23327068?read-now=1&refreqid=excelsior%3Af2ceff0ac9973c5b232fa6cba6822b23&seq=2#page_scan_tab_contents): a system where the guaranteed security of property does not stop wealthy people from gaming the political process to protect their sources of wealth and to give themselves massive economic advantages. They can also work on imposing economic burdens and responsibilities onto the poor and middle class while lowering their own responsibilities for the nation's problems.\n\nWhat is the main issue with all of this? Well, like I have discussed before, many modern countries seem to be returning to a modern form of feudalism some political scientists and experts refer to as neofeudalism. In a previous article, I discussed how working gigs where you depend on corporations for clients and do some unpaid work and pay a fee for the 'privilege' of doing a job is similar to the concept of peasant work during feudalism. On top of that, many corporations are buying up land and renting it out to people to create a work of corporate landlords where only wealthy corporate elites and their children are able to own private property. Now, having countries that are supposed to be democratic become indirect oligarchies helps in the process of bringing back modern feudalism. You create a world where the wealthy have power to influence our laws while giving people enough of an illusion that they still have a say in governance to keep them docile is a decent way to subtly bring back the feudal era. The rich get to have more and more of a say in government while reducing economic opportunities to a dying middle class and claim that people just 'work hard enough', they could wealthy too - something that becomes nearly impossible as issues like the rise of civil oligarchies pop up! Plus, plenty of oligarchs now have more access to [data](https://theconversation.com/elon-musk-and-the-oligarchs-of-the-second-gilded-age-can-not-only-sway-the-public-they-can-exploit-their-data-too-181936) that allows them to better shape public discourse and propaganda to shape their own interests. Plus, the oligarchy grows as [more](https://theconversation.com/the-slippery-slope-of-the-oligarchy-media-model-81931) of them purchase media companies that allows them to have control over the news & information that common people had - similar to how information in the feudal age was shaped by the ruling families. However, this article (and some of the articles that I am planning on writing in the future) is about primitive technology that might be useful in any survival scenario where all you have access to are the materials you can locate in nature. One of the primitive technologies I want to mention is primitive shelter building. Imagine, for one reason or another, you are lost in the middle of the forest and you need to quickly build yourself a new place to stay in order to survive. There are plenty of simple shelters you can create, but no shelter is simpler than the [fallen](https://scoutlife.org/outdoors/3473/taking-shelter/comment-page-1/) tree shelter. In fact, according to scoutlife.org it is pretty much the simplest shelter you can build if you are in any environment with plenty of trees around (forests, jungles,savanna,swamp, etc.) and you can find one of said trees fallen over. \n\nHow do you build a fallen tree shelter? Well, first you need to find a tree that has fallen over and make sure it is still, despite falling over, structurally stable enough to lean branches against it & make sure it won't fall down/collapse on top of you anytime soon. If you are building a fallen tree shelter under a very large fallen tree with a large trunk, it might not be best to use this as a structure. If you have to use something like this to make a fallen tree shelter, you might want to jump on the trunk a few times to see if it is about to decay to the point where it can fall over at any moment. If the trunk remains stable and doesn't fall down after you jump on it a few times with your full weight, then it might make sense to use it for a fallen tree shelter. If you are building under a large enough tree trunk, this checking process is very important. A fifty foot hardwood tree weighs around two thousand pounds and if it falls on you, you will be injured at best or, at the very worst, killed. If you are building under a small tree that has fallen over, this will be less of a problem, but you will still need to make sure the tree that is the center of the structural integrity of your shelter does not fall over.\n\n![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmPQTGiH4QPvNEuiKEfQHsVgiEHgkjunQpGm9JjdwHxpdt/image.png)\n\nAbove is a picture of a large tree that could be used as a shelter, but you might need to jump on it a few times to make sure it is stable enough & won't collapse to the ground on top of you. Once you find a stable enough tree to create a fallen tree shelter,you will want to collect branches and lean said branches against the windward side of the tree (so the wind will be blowing into your shelter and not against it). This will create the 'wall' of your shelter. You need to make the wall thick enough to keep the wind out and not have said wall collapse if the wind blows very hard. You can then add more branches, large leaves, brush, and other materials to help cover the wall. On the open side of the shelter you can create a fire to help keep you warm. If you are being hit by the elements from both sides, you can use branches to build walls on both sides of the fallen tree to produce an 'A-frame'-style shelter.
