It has been almost twenty-five years since my grandfather passed away and it feels a bit surreal thinking how fast the time has gone.  I remember my grandmothers passing so well because it was less than a month after I was married that her health rapidly declined.  I remember returning from our honeymoon to a call that we should come straight away to see her.  She was a very resilient woman.  She seemed like the type that would live forever; never sick, never made much fuss about anything and likely didn't give sickness or death much thought at all.  My grandfather, who was an engineer, designed and built their home and as a child I remember thinking that their home was full of all things old!  My grandparents had a few items that were left to them by their parents. One of those items was a dining table left to my grandfather by his mother.  It had been refinished a few times that I was aware of and during my lifetime, was a dark oak stain.  After my grandma passed away, the family prepared to sell her house which meant cleaning the house.  As items were claimed by family members, the table sat and sat with no takers.  At the time, I was living in a 400 sqft apartment in the West end of Toronto, certainly not enough space for a vintage dining table but I asked if my parents would hang onto it until I had space to take it.  Fast forward four years and it now sits in our dining room and is used as our everyday dining table.  Besides a good clean, it hasn't been changed.  It certainly could use some reinforcement and refinishing but for now, it is being used as is.  It is an oval table and when we took it, it came with two leaves, however only one seemed to fit.  On a trip this summer, I found some cute anchor shaped hooks and since I have a small obsession with nautical things, I decided to scoop them up.  Using the extra table leaf as a backing for the hooks, I figured I could create an interesting piece of functional wall art that had a bit of a meaningful story behind it.  Here’s the step by step on how my husband and I made it.  \nSome initial notes: You’ll want to make sure you measure on the wall where you’d like your wood to hang and decide wether to drill into stud or use drywall plugs.  We opted for drywall plugs as the spacing fit better this way.  \n\nWhat you’ll need:\nDrill with various bits and a counter sink bit\nlong screws and short screws\nheavy duty dry wall plugs (if using)\ntape measure\nlevel\npensil\nhooks\nwood plank (distressed or vintage)\n\nStep 1\nMeasure and mark where to drill the holes to mount the wood plank and drill. It has been almost twenty-five years since my grandfather passed away and it feels a bit surreal thinking how fast the time has gone.  I remember my grandmothers passing so well because it was less than a month after I was married that her health rapidly declined.  I remember returning from our honeymoon to a call that we should come straight away to see her.  She was a very resilient woman.  She seemed like the type that would live forever; never sick, never made much fuss about anything and likely didn't give sickness or death much thought at all.  My grandfather, who was an engineer, designed and built their home and as a child I remember thinking that their home was full of all things old!  My grandparents had a few items that were left to them by their parents. One of those items was a dining table left to my grandfather by his mother.  It had been refinished a few times that I was aware of and during my lifetime, was a dark oak stain.  After my grandma passed away, the family prepared to sell her house which meant cleaning the house.  As items were claimed by family members, the table sat and sat with no takers.  At the time, I was living in a 400 sqft apartment in the West end of Toronto, certainly not enough space for a vintage dining table but I asked if my parents would hang onto it until I had space to take it.  Fast forward four years and it now sits in our dining room and is used as our everyday dining table.  Besides a good clean, it hasn't been changed.  It certainly could use some reinforcement and refinishing but for now, it is being used as is.  It is an oval table and when we took it, it came with two leaves, however only one seemed to fit.  On a trip this summer, I found some cute anchor shaped hooks and since I have a small obsession with nautical things, I decided to scoop them up.  Using the extra table leaf as a backing for the hooks, I figured I could create an interesting piece of functional wall art that had a bit of a meaningful story behind it.  Here’s the step by step on how my husband and I made it.  \nSome initial notes: You’ll want to make sure you measure on the wall where you’d like your wood to hang and decide wether to drill into stud or use drywall plugs.  We opted for drywall plugs as the spacing fit better this way.  \n\nWhat you’ll need:\nDrill with various bits and a counter sink bit\nlong screws and short screws\nheavy duty dry wall plugs (if using)\ntape measure\nlevel\npensil\nhooks\nwood plank (distressed or vintage)\n\nStep 1\nMeasure and mark where to drill the holes to mount the wood plank and drill.  We used a counter sink bit to prevent screw heads from sticking out.\n\nhttps://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/28/dabddfcbc2d445946b1e34acf7fad3e2.jpg\n\nStep 2 \nDrill in wall anchors into wall\n\nhttps://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/28/8c4db4f1f9f059f0ea7a9177da786669.jpg\n\nStep 3\nDrill screws through wood and into drywall plugs to mount the plank to the wall. For different style hooks, you may need to screw the screw into the wood then hook the hook onto it. Like every year before, we headed west to our family farm house not far from Kincardine on Ontarios West Coast, home of the most beautiful beaches.  This isn't your average cottage though; it is my father in laws grandfathers house and I'm guessing that it hasn't been touched for at least 50 years.  Our week away each year isn't just a week away from our routine at home, it's a week back in time.       "body": "This summer marks 4 years of marriage with my husband. \nhttps://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/08/7d3d5b5efec745c58998c57fcdb66bc2.jpg \nWe've got 2 lovely boys and we've lived in 3 different homes.  Prior to making the choice to stay home, I was a veterinary technician.  I loved it, most days.  \nhttps://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/08/820e6e0f03a26687128b0a8f2036aab4.jpg\nMy special interest was anesthesia and I loved learning and teaching future veterinarians the intricate balance between life and death, how to keep a critical patient alive during life saving surgery and the rewarding feeling of bringing a pet back to their family, healed and ready for more love.  That being said, I looked forward to my last day of lifting 40kg dogs and wrestling with an angry beast while trying to get an IV catheter in.  I certainly wouldn't miss the daily clean ups of various bodily fluids, the angry owner feeling entitled to free vet care or the loss of life that happened all too often.  Being pregnant and 2 weeks from my due date, I was DONE!  Just over a week from my last day at work, our firstborn arrived.  He was hairy.  Hairy shoulders, hairy back and a head full of hair most women coveted.  \nhttps://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/08/IMG_136420853.jpg \nJust over a year and a half later, another little boy would be born to us.  https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/07/27/d7c889ba3410fde63820034e06b6110c.jpg\nSo started my new job, my new role and the job that would stretch me and grow me like none had before.  There certainly were similarities; bodily fluids, lifting squirming things and the inevitable exhaustion, but the best change was the new love for a little human that nine months ago, didn't exist.   That love is something that keeps me in the job still today but more so, it is the responsibility I have to raise these little humans into responsible, self controlled, gracious and loving men.  The job isn't easy but who else will do it?  Who will love my children like I do?  Who will give up themselves for them like I will?  Who will invest in their good like I will?  I can't think of a name.  Not only am I the only mom these boys will ever have, but I'm their greatest advocate, the voice they don't yet have, their teacher, their leader, their mentor, their friend.  Who will create an environment like I have for them where they can feel safe to explore, learn, be themselves and make mistakes?  I can't think of anyone.  See the reality is that for this life,  these are MY boys, entrusted to ME by their perfect Creator.  They don't have another person to call mom and so I do this homemaking job because I'm the only one who can do it and that gives me great thankfulness and joy",
