While it is most commonly found when utilizing exchanges, it can be found in almost every aspect of blockchain processing.\n\nIn essence, MEV is a small amount of money miners or validators receive for [ordering the blocks](https://info.arkm.com/research/beginners-guide-to-mev) in the “waiting room” during the transaction process. You’ve probably experienced it; if you’ve ever executed a transaction and received a few cents or bytes less than you expected, it is likely [due to paying MEV](https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5178798.0;wap).\n\nWhile MEV isn’t always bad, it is a way that miners and validators are able to extract a little bit more money from users. Some of it is necessary, but unfortunately, many individuals have built bots to focus on extracting MEV to maximize their bottom lines.\n\n## How Does MEV Work?\n\nMEV is complicated to explain if you don’t understand blockchain, but we are going to try our best. If you find yourself still confused, we recommend reading about [how blockchain works](https://www.mintdice.com/blog/how-does-crypto-mining-work) and  then returning to read this article again.\n\nFirst, there is a user who clicks “submit” on their transaction, typically on an exchange, though MEV can also be extracted from [crypto wallet](https://www.mintdice.com/blog/crypto-wallets-how-to-choose-one-for-you)-to-wallet transfers. Regardless, the transaction is then sent to a “waiting room” called a [mempool](https://www.ledger.com/academy/what-is-a-mempool)(often found via [blockchain explorers](https://www.mintdice.com/blog/what-is-a-blockchain-explorer-and-should-you-use-one)). It is not private, and anyone on the blockchain can see your transaction there waiting.\n\nBlocks on the blockchain are built by [grouping these transactions together](https://www.binance.com/en/academy/articles/what-is-maximal-extractable-value-mev) into a single block. This process is performed by miners on some blockchains ([Bitcoin](https://bitcoin.org/)) and [validators on others](https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/10hqnfm/how_does_a_transaction_goes_through_on_ethereum/) (Ethereum).\n\nBasically, these miners and validators are in charge of picking which transactions go through with their block. While you might think they would always pick those who paid the most to prioritize their transaction, this is where MEV comes in. Sometimes, miners and validators will [group and order transactions in a specific way](https://www.binance.com/en/academy/articles/what-is-maximal-extractable-value-mev) to take home more money for themselves.\n\nAs you can imagine, this isn’t something the human mind can decipher in time to catch and order the transactions. As such, many miners and validators utilize bots to watch for these opportunities, manipulating the system to ensure they can process these transactions and take home the MEV.  \n\n## Who Benefits From MEV?\n\nIn general, it is the validator or miner that benefits from MEV; however, the prevalence of MEV is increasing, and some individuals have started specific types of bots for the purpose of collecting MEV. It is a natural occurrence in many instances and simply part of doing business. That being said, there are some types of MEV that are considered harmful because they are deceptive to consumers and users. Below, we will go through the types of MEV as well as whether or not they are viewed in [a positive or negative light](https://www.esma.europa.eu/sites/default/files/2025-07/ESMA50-481369926-29744_Maximal_Extractable_Value_Implications_for_crypto_markets.pdf).  \n\nIt is important to remember that while MEV is naturally occurring, the entity behind the bot matters too. If a malicious actor creates these bots to use the money for a malicious purpose, even if the process of collecting the MEV may be good, it can be inherently bad for users and society.\n\n### 1\\. Arbitrage\n\nArbitrage is considered a neutral type of MEV. It naturally occurs in both the fiat and crypto worlds, and there will always be individuals taking advantage of arbitrage opportunities, and this process actually keeps markets efficient, so most professionals don’t mind it.\n\nThese MEV opportunities are usually spotted by bots and occur when a token [is cheaper on one exchange than another](https://chain.link/education-hub/maximal-extractable-value-mev). The bot will spot the difference, buying the tokens from the cheaper exchange and selling them to the more expensive one, pocketing the difference.\n\n### 2\\. Sandwich Attacks\n\n[Sandwich attacks](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yifD9y_Eo8) are considered a negative type of MEV, as they harm regular users. They occur via bots, and typically happen when an especially large transaction is pending in a mempool.\n\nFor this attack, the bot spots your buy order, and [rushes to purchase the token ahead of you](https://www.coinbase.com/learn/advanced-trading/what-are-frontrunners-and-mev-when-it-comes-to-crypto-trading), driving the price up. Then your transaction executes at a higher price, costing you more. Once your transaction is processed, the bot sells the token, gaining money for itself. While some individuals argue that there is nothing preventing bots from doing this, it does result in the user paying a higher price just so a third party can net positive.\n\n### 3\\. Liquidation\n\n[Liquidation MEV](https://github.com/flashbots/mev-job-board/blob/main/specs/liquity-liquidations.md) is necessary for the blockchain to function and is seen as a positive form of MEV. Liquidation MEV requires an individual to borrow funds on a DeFi platform, putting up a token as collateral. As we all know, tokens fluctuate often, and there may be an instance where the token that the collateral is placed in drops in value, requiring the protocol to sell the token to cover the cost of the loan.\n\n MEV comes in, because bots watch for this, rushing to trigger the liquidation as they receive a return for doing so. Although this sounds mean, this is required for a lending protocol to save solvent, and that is why these bots exist, to ensure this process happens quickly when the conditions are met.\n\nOverall, there are so many ways to look at MEV, and while we don’t want anyone sandwich-attacking you, MEV bots are a necessity for DeFi lending protocols and are required to keep trading markets efficient. Before you get too excited, however, let’s look into the details of what cryptocurrency insurance covers and whether or not it is worth it.\n\n## What is Cryptocurrency Insurance?\n\nCryptocurrency insurance, at a base level, is [an insurance plan](https://www.britannica.com/money/insurance) that protects cryptocurrency purchases. But the actual options for coverage actually go far beyond just covering your purchases. Rather, there are a multitude of options for those involved in mining, research, and at an institutional level.\n\nWe were honestly surprised by the large number of cryptocurrency insurance options we found available during our research, but cryptocurrency insurance doesn’t function the same way as your health insurance, though, so don’t go out and buy a policy just yet.\n\n## What Does Cryptocurrency Insurance Cover?\n\nThere are many different types of cryptocurrency insurance, and we will discuss them each briefly.\n\n### Mining Hardware\n\nAs the title indicates, this type of cryptocurrency insurance is only for miners and allows them to protect the tech they use to mine crypto. Similar to renters’ insurance, this is a specific policy with a dollar amount attached to expensive pieces of [mining equipment](https://www.mintdice.com/blog/is-cryptocurrency-mining-still-proftiable-2025) in case of theft, loss, or damage.\n\n### Platform Failure/Digital Asset Protection\n\nPlatform failure and digital asset insurance is specifically designed for institutions and is intended to pay out if their platform is lost or damaged. We believe it includes coverage for damages [caused by hackers](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c2kgndwwd7lo), but each policy we reviewed was a bit different.\n\n### Crime Theft/Loss\n\nFor the average cryptocurrency investor, there is crime [theft/loss insurance](https://cointelegraph.com/explained/what-is-cryptocurrency-insurance-and-how-does-it-work), which will pay out in the case that your [crypto is stolen or lost](https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2025-05-22/crypto-crime-is-the-future-bank-heists-are-history). To be clear, it will not protect you in the case that you lose part of your investment due to a token declining in value—this is only if you lose access to your cryptocurrency through a fault that is not your own.\n\nWe are not 100% certain of the ins and outs of these types of policies, but they may be a good idea if you have a large amount of assets and are worried about them being stolen.\n\n### Digital Property Protection\n\nSimilar to the type of insurance you would purchase for expensive jewelry, digital property insurance is taken out for a specific digital property, such as an [NFT](https://www.investopedia.com/non-fungible-tokens-nft-5115211), usually for a specific value. Below, we listed some of the companies that you can consider for cryptocurrency insurance should you feel so inclined.\n\n·Evertas\n\n·CoinCover\n\n·Canopius\n\n·[Munich Re](https://www.munichre.com/en/solutions/for-industry-clients/crypto-cover.html)\n\n·[Howden Insurance](https://www.howdengroup.com/uk-en/sector/financial-services/digital-assets-and-cryptocurrency-insurance)\n\n·Superscript\n\nTo be clear, we have not vetted any of these cryptocurrency insurance providers. All vetting must be done on your own terms and, as always, be cautious of scams and read all the fine print before buying.\n\n## Can Anyone Buy Cryptocurrency Insurance\n\nThere are many different types of cryptocurrency insurance, but while some types are limited to institutions, theft/loss protection and digital property protection can generally be purchased by anyone. We don’t think that everyone needs to buy cryptocurrency insurance though—more on that below.\n\n## Should You Purchase Cryptocurrency Insurance?\n\nJust because something exists doesn’t mean you need to purchase it. Especially when it is something new to the industry, like cryptocurrency insurance. In our opinion, only those who own very expensive NFTs or work with cryptocurrency on an institutional level should consider cryptocurrency insurance.\n\nWhy? Well, like we said above, cryptocurrency insurance is [new to the industry](https://www.financemagnates.com/cryptocurrency/innovation/cryptocurrency-insurance-the-pros-and-cons-of-protecting-your-assets/), and we don’t exactly trust all the names of companies that offer it that we found during our research. At this point, we think acquiring [insurance for cryptocurrency](https://content.naic.org/insurance-topics/cryptocurrency) might be just as risky as holding cryptocurrency in the first place. This is especially true in countries without strict regulations governing insurance companies.\n\nAdditionally, the major risk of buying cryptocurrency isn’t theft or loss, but rather losing your investment due to [market fluctuations](https://www.mintdice.com/blog/what-is-permanent-loss-and-how-does-it-affect-crypto). While, yes, there is still risk of being robbed or losing your private key, in general, you can mitigate that risk by [upping security practices](https://www.mintdice.com/blog/security-tips-crypto). You cannot mitigate the market risk.\n\nThis means that even if you buy the best insurance, you could still [watch your asset lose value tomorrow](https://www.bankrate.com/insurance/cryptocurrency-insurance-options-remain-limited/). If you absolutely want cryptocurrency insurance, just be sure you proceed with absolute caution and vet the platform before buying.\n\n## Is Cryptocurrency Insurance Worth It?\n\nIn our opinion, cryptocurrency is too new to truly be worth it. While there might be some value to it for platforms and individuals holding [very expensive NFTs](https://opensea.io/blog/articles/most-expensive-nfts), the average investor should skip it and rather spend their time and money ensuring they have implemented some basic security practices for keeping their crypto safe.\n\nOverall, cryptocurrency insurance is a viable option, but it is still too new for us to recommend it at this time.
