      "body": "What happens to businesses that don't report their earnings and or losses properly in their financials?  Often times nothing.  In the majority of cases where companies commit financial  happens until it is too late and the damage is already done for those who invested in the company.  Once the company is past the place of no return, investors usually find out the truth of a companies true financials like we saw with one of the most famous financial scandals of all time in Enron.  Enron was able to hide billions of dollars in losses and debt by using deceptive accounting practices.  One of those deceptive accounting processes was to count future project projections into their profit and writing in possible income from projects that weren't even started yet on their current financial statements.  \n\nWhile accounting practices like these have been revised and made highly illegal the idea behind deceptive financial practices is still being used today at a large scale.  One of the practices that is currently starting to be found in many businesses around the world is Reverse Factoring.  What is Reverse Factoring?  Reverse Factoring is a process where a financial entity like a bank becomes a middle man between a supplier and a buyer.  Instead of the buyers paying for the supplies directly to the supplier, the financial entity pays the supplier immediately and bills the buyer at a later date.  \n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdcyn6gaxNdDtVNbTxZBPMzp6UczMPg5khGmzXR3nWept/image.png) \n\nThis process benefits the buyers and suppliers in multiple ways:\n\n- Improved relationship between Buyer and Supplier \n- Buyer can purchase supplies at a discounted rate as the Financial Entity will pay the invoice to the Supplier immediately\n- Supplier will receive payment at the earliest of opportunities so will not be cash strapped\n\nThis seems like a legitimate business practice that has little to no downside for the corporations right? Well like all good things some people have to take advantage of the opportunity and ruin it.  Just recently a UK based company called Carillion was found to have hidden around 400 to 500 million pounds using deceptive practices like reverse factoring.  On Carillion's balance sheet they had their net debt at 219 million pounds however, over a 4 to 5 year stretch they were able to hide the remaining 400 to 500 million pounds in other \"payable\" accounts.  During this stretch of time there was no press release or any news about the companies increasing debt to their investors and the public.  While those outside Carillion believed the company was doing well, it was actually falling deeper and deeper into debt and finding ways around the system to hide that debt from their investors.\n\nWhy is this an issue?  Companies are realizing they can tie up large amounts of debt in \"payables\" accounts and increase the length between payments in order to hide money for longer stretches of time.  Because the financial institutions are making deals with the buyer they are often times allotting the buyer a longer period of time to make good on the payment.  Where the supplier might have demanded payment within 60 days, the financial institution often times will give the buyer 120 or even 180 days.  Not only are they extending the length between payment periods, they are using these accounts payable to hide massive amounts of debt that should not be put in these accounts on a balance sheet in the first place.  \n\nFitch ratings, one of the big three credit rating agencies started investigating this problem and has found this problem with reverse factoring to be running rampant throughout the US and Europe.  If companies are able to push the time out of their debt owed they might need to come up with millions of dollars that they do not have and are often times just buying more time as we saw with countless companies right before they collapse and file bankruptcy.  This is an extremely dangerous business practice that hurts the shareholders and creditors of the companies involved.  While more light is being shown on this topic it only looks like these type of practices are increasing in popularity as Fitch reported that out of 337 companies they looked at in 2017 \"parables increased by 6%\".  While this can't be directly connected to reverse factoring it is easy to assume that a majority of businesses are using some sort of practice like this in order to get a better deal on goods or to hide some of their ever growing debt.  \n\nFor those out there looking to invest in companies and buy stock always remember to do your research on the companies financials and look at their debt, cash flow, cash reserves and payable's.  \n\nIf you have any questions regarding reverse factoring or any comments you would like to add please share them below.       "body": "The banking industry has been a staple of our financial economies since the age of man.  Starting around 2000 BC, the first banks were simple and gave grain loans to farmers and merchants to trade or grow.  As civilization evolved so did the banking industry as they started to accept deposits and perform money lending.  This helped spur business and grow economies as it gave people more financial opportunities to grow.  \n\nLooking at the banking system now, it looks like that of an impenetrable fortress.  Banks nowadays have their hands in nearly everything and are supported by nearly every government.  While they look simple from the outside once you dive a little deeper and start looking under the hood at how they work the questions as to how is this right start to appear?  This last year I started my journey into researching the financial industry and discovered a lot of interesting and deeply disturbing issues that plague our current financial system.  \n\n![snb-swiss-national-bank-office-730x438.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmX1MrKTN8wdrW532r7YFHPymcyt9DLbNeDSFANX7BHPKG/snb-swiss-national-bank-office-730x438.jpg)\n\nThe issue I will be bringing up today covers the Swiss National bank and their involvement in the FAANG stocks.  If you don't already know what a National Bank is, it is a bank owned by the state or nation that it resides in or a private bank which operates at a national level.  These banks have a right to create money which they do by printing more or by using fractional reserve banking (I can dive into this in a later post if people are interested).   These methods help grow the economy by bringing more money into the economies of the world however, it comes with a price.  That price is called inflation.  Inflation is defined as, \"a general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money.\"  This occurs when more money is being created and each dollar, yen, Euro or Ruble is worth less than the year before.  We have seen inflation occur within the last couple decades as you could purchase a candy bar for $.25 in the year 2000 and now those same bars are $1.50.  There have been extreme examples called hyper inflation occur in Zimbabwe and Venezuela where the value of the currency has dropped to almost nothing and the paper it is printed on is worth more than the actual value printed on the note. \n\nSince these banks can control the creation of money, they can also control the inflation rate of a country.  The United States tries to keep a target of around 2% inflation which they have as a target in the Federal Reserves  statutory mandate.  So the banks can in essence control the value of our currencies by the creation of money.  Now if banks can print as much money as they want with the only drawback being that each dollar is worth less, there is little consequence for them to continue to push the inflation rate higher as they don't see much if any of the actual loss in value.  The loss is felt by the normal consumer that saves their money in the bank each year.  \n\nAs an example lets say John has $10,000 he has been saving in a savings account that is earning .5% interest each year.   Now at the end of the year that $10,000 has grown to $10,050.  Some might say John has gained $50 dollars by smartly saving his money in the bank, however this couldn't be further from the truth.  Last year the inflation rate in the US was 2.1%.  Now that means that Johns $10,000 dollars lost 2.1% of it's value just for being money.  So in actuality john didn't gain $50 he actually lost $160, that $10,000 he had at the beginning of the year is now only worth $9,840.  Now where did that value go to one might ask? Who printed the money to cause the inflation? That's right the banks took Johns $160 value.  \n\nThis is a little disturbing to think about how our society has been tricked into thinking saving our money in banks is a smart investment.  But in reality we are just making the banks richer and ourselves poorer in the process. It is a battlefield where only the smart or lucky survive.  Now since 2010, we have seen 5 stocks in particular grow at astounding rates, these are the FAANG stocks which I spoke about earlier.  These 5 stocks are comprised of Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google.  Now we have seen these stock climb in price since the recession of 2007 thru 2009 and the numbers are absolutely absurd.   \n\n(Rounded numbers)\nFacebook: 2013 - $28 / 2018 - $183\nApple: 2010 - $30 / 2018 - $173\nAmazon: 2010 - $130 / 2018 - $1200\nNetflix: 2010 - $7.8 / 2018 -  $200\nGoogle: 2010 - $308 / 2018 $1100\n\nSo the growth of each of these stocks has been:\n\nFacebook: 653.5%\nApple: 576.6%\nAmazon: 923%\nNetflix: 2564%\nGoogle: 357%\n\nFor an 8 year span those numbers are ridiculous (5 years for Facebook).  Now one might argue that that is because these companies have been the most innovative in the last decade so they should grow at such an astounding rate, and to be fair they really have been and deserve a lot of the the growth they have received.  But, these stock didn't grow that high by their own they had a lot of help.  \n\nAn article I was shown last year brought insight into what could helping these 5 corporations push their stock higher and higher and that is banks, more specifically the Swiss National Bank (SNB).  This article showed that on the SNB balance sheet there is close to $88 billion in a portfolio for US equities which is roughly .3% of the US stock market.  They are the 35th largest investor in the US stock market. \n\nCompany\tValue (in millions)\tShareholder rank\nApple\t$2,967\t27th\nAlphabet\t$2,190\t39th\nMicrosoft\t$2,031\t33rd\nFacebook\t$1,516\t34th\nAmazon\t$1,440\t35th\nJohnson & Johnson\t$1,401\t26th\nExxon Mobil\t$1,353\t21st\nAT&T\t$995\t24th\nProcter & Gamble\t$941\t23rd\nPfizer\t$844\t32nd\n\nNow while they don't own a commanding position in any of the companies they own enough to push the price higher and affect the value of the stock.  What I have great issue in is that this is a bank that can create as much money as they want and is using this money to directly influence the stock market let alone a selected few stocks.  While I find this grossly wrong it is the current system we live in and one we need to change or else those in positions of great power and wealth will continue to thrive and those below them will continue to whither and fall deeper into poverty.  \n\nIf you have any questions or comments please leave them below.       "body": "An interesting article that caught my attention today from Zero Hedge talked about a potential massive change in the political landscape within Europe.  In recent past, Europe has been largely dominated by socialist movements, leaders and policies. In total they have given away $32 billion since it's inception.  \n\nBannon's goal is to create a \"\"populist stronghold within European Parliament\" hoping to gain a third of lawmakers.  If this were to occur we could see a major shift in the political landscape of Europe from the current socialist policies they use now to something more populous geared.  \n\nSome of the major issues brought forward by \"the movement\" is to oppose the unchecked human trafficking of migrants across European countries.  This has been a major issue enveloping not only Europe but the western world as many elections have been decided by this problem.  Just look at how the English people responded to the Brexit and wanting to close their borders.  \n\nNow this movement which is Trump and the Wests populist push into Europe is still well within it's infancy stage and has yet to make any major headway, however there has been a lot of positive support and feedback which has led to the creation of positions within the NGO already.  \n\nWithin Europe there has been a massive opposition to the movement with many including EU Parliament Udo Bullmann describing the movement as \"an attack on freedom and democracy in Europe\".  Many of these critics are aligning this movement with already hateful feelings towards a Trump policy and will say and do whatever they can to sway those against it.  While this is quite a popular opinion within the leftist mindset, it will be interesting how much traction this movement will actually make on a continent largely dominated by the left.",
