There was a challenge given to my statements around it that brought up that Paul did away with those commands in 1 Corinthians 8. Paul talks about how that meat sacrificed to idols really isn't anything because those idols aren't anything. That we should only not eat it if we are going to cause someone else to stumble. \n\nHowever, that isn't where Paul finishes his thoughts on the subject. If we move forward to chapter 10, Paul explicitly states to NOT eat that meat if we know that it has been sacrificed to idols. Because it has been sacrificed to demons, and you cannot take part of demons and Christ at the same time. \n\nI have pointed out in several comics over the years, context is everything. One big issue with using Paul to say that this, or any command, is no longer valid or not valid for Gentiles is it takes Paul out of context with the rest of Scripture. Many, including myself several years ago, read the New Testament without any knowledge of what the Old Testament says. We read the NT without any context. One HUGE key of context that is missing is Deuteronomy 13. In that chapter, God gives the instructions on how to know if someone is a false prophet. \n\n\"3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him\"\n\nMany look at the first two verses that talk of the signs and wonders, but God also gives us further detail in these verses above. Anyone that takes us away from keeping God's commands, that is a false prophet. If Paul was teaching against God's commands, Paul would be a false prophet. However, we know Paul isn't a false prophet as have Scripture to let us know Paul isn't speaking against God's commands. Paul was accused of the teaching the same thing during his time, but that account was settled in Acts 21:17-23 and shown to be a false accusation. \n\nhttps://thestraightandnarrow.cfw.me/comics/613",

While it isn't mentioning it in the comic, this is based on Acts 15. A lot of folks out there will point at Acts 15 to say \"The Jerusalem Council settled the issue of the Gentiles. They only have to follow those four commands listed.\" While there are food related commands mentioned (eating blood, food sacrificed to idols, or things strangled) there is no mention of the clean and unclean, so their defense is that it doesn't apply to Gentiles.\n\nThere are two major issues with using Acts 15 in this way. The first is the hypocrisy of using Acts 15 to say that because it doesn't mention certain commands, they are not to be followed, but in the same breath not following the commands that ARE listed in Acts 15. If you have ever used Acts 15 to say you do not follow OT Law because that wasn't given to the Gentiles, when was the last time you checked on the meat you ate to make sure it wasn't strangled? Or that all the blood was drained out? Or that it wasn't sacrificed to a false god? My assumption here is never, because I know in all my years in church, I never once heard a sermon talking about these points. I didn't even start thinking about checking for these things in my food until AFTER I started following God's Laws. \n\nThe second is that in verse 21, the Jerusalem Council gives the Gentiles a pamphlet. \"For Moses from generations of old has in every city those who preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.” Homework. These new converts weren't just going to follow four random commands and then just live their lives. They were going to learn from Moses (the Torah, the first 5 books of the Bible) every Sabbath. What do those books teach? God's Laws. \n\nA side point I thought of while writing this. Out of the four commands given in Acts 15, three are food related.       "body": "Peter's vision is often used as another objection to being able to eat unclean animals. We all know part of the vision. Peter has a dream. God shows a sheet of animals that included unclean animals. God then tells Peter to kill and eat. This is usually where someone stops the story to \"prove\" that we can eat whatever we want now.\n\nHowever, there are three major points that are overlooked by taking this stance. The first, Peter tells God \"NO!\". \n\nActs 10:14 NIV “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”\n\nThis is Peter, the most zealous of the disciples. If God told Peter something, don't you think he would do it? Something wasn't right about what God was telling Peter. It was something that went against what Peter knew of God's character. Which leads to the second point, and the point of the comic: Peter is confused.\n\nActs 10:17a NIV While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision\n\nWe just run with the dream to mean what it literally sounds like: God is telling Peter to eat animals God said not to eat. Peter did not take this interpretation though. He knew some of those animals that were shown were not for food, he would never eat them. If you have ever read the Maccabees, you know how serious those in the faith took not eating those animals, even in the face of death. Peter is showing no different here and knows that this dream isn't a \"plain text\" reading, but something to be interpreted much like Joseph's dreams. Which leads to the last point, Peter tells us the interpretation, and it's not about food.\n\nActs 10:28 NIV He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.\"\n\nPeter's vision is all about people. The Jews of the time had a man-made law that forbid them to associate with Gentiles. We even see Peter later going back into following this law later when Paul confronts him in Galatians 2. \n\nContext is important when it comes to forming our Theology. We can't take a verse or two out of context and make it mean what we want it to mean. I know there are a lot of folks out there that like hearing a good conspiracy theory. I am in no way saying anything against that. However, I have run into people that this seems to be all they do. For example: I had a conversation with someone close to me recently that during our conversation had some new theory they had heard. Only with this person, it is never a theory, it is the \"truth\"! Even if it has been debunked and you can physically see that the theory is wrong, it is the \"truth\" and I am just blind.\n\nI had challenged the fact that whenever we spoke, the conversation always goes down this path. Especially if anything Biblical is brought up, it is usually derailed by moving to these theories. I was of course the charged with being willfully blind and not wanting to expose what is going on in the world. Then I had described to me a video they watched on some of this evilness that they have been researching so they can \"wake the world\". It was so horrific I do not want to recount what was going on in it. Let's just say it was a public figure doing some type of ritual that ended up harming someone else. \n\nMy question that I posed then and still now: why does it matter? I've looked through my Bible. I can find no instance that anyone was given charge by God, or even did on their own, that went through and found all the evil things that a group of people was doing and then went to another group and told them all about it to \"bring them to God\". All the examples we are given people are going out and calling for repentance and speaking the good of God. They aren't focusing on the evil of the world.
