A nice day for a change. Not that the weather changed much. It was usually cloudy and fairly gloomy, typical for Portland. It was a nice, warm day, but the rainbooms were still crashing in the thunderstorm lighting up the middle of the sky like a twisted birthday cake.\n\nThe door to the coffee shop swung open, followed by the chime of the sign on the door. A young guy stepped in, who nodded at Cassie. Cassie nodded back and went back to her sweeping.\n\nThe guy looked like he was in his early twenties. He had sandy hair, his hair combed back. His eyes were bold, but not cold. His features were open, and friendly. He was dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, but had a long trench coat on. His arms, under the sleeves of the coat were brawny and strong, but didn't look like they could break a pair of handcuffs, which worried Cassie.\n\nHe walked over to the counter, checking out the menu. \"What up, dude,\" he said to Cassie.\n\n\"What's happened?\" she asked, a tad nervously.\n\n\"They've got this special today. You want a coffee cake or like a chocolate candy baby?\"\n\n\"Baby,\" Cassie responded.\n\n\"That's never good. Anyways...\" the guy checked his pocket and found a wallet. He produced a few bucks to pay for the candy. \"I'll see you around.\"\n\nAs he was walking out, he turned to Cassie and remembered something. \"Oh yeah, what's your name?\" he asked.\n\n\"Cassie,\" she replied.\n\n\"Oh yeah, that's right. I just found out today.\"\n\n\"Found out what?\"\n\n\"Your name. I'm sorry... I'm pretty flaky when it comes to names and stuff. I may have forgotten it, but then again I may not have. Anyways, I'll see you around,\" he said with a smile, before going out the door.\n\nCassie quickly pocketed the money the guy had given her and went back to the counter. After a few moments of straightening things up, she saw that the order she had filled out for a guy before had been picked up, which was nice to see. She was about to leave and get some fresh air, when a young lady walked in. She had brown hair in a ponytail and brown eyes. She was wearing a small, black T-shirt and a pair of jeans. I was expecting it to be pretty exciting, I'd always been a good student, and I had a lot going for me. But, thinking about it now, I didn't stand out a whole lot. No one ever noticed how smart I was or that I could do any kind of magic (that I could tell my parents about), just enough to make them think I was 'a good kid'. I must have had friends, though, as I was never alone and I was friendly to everyone.\n\n\n\nThe first couple days of school were entirely normal, I had friends and played in the playground. After all, it was fifth grade and everyone had classmate friends. Then, the big day came. We were allowed to choose between two electives that year and today was when we would choose. One of them was Mr. Whiskers and Magic. I remember how nervous I was because I had multiple reasons to be worried. The first reason was that magic was hard, and I just wasn't a hard worker. I liked to play and have fun and do whatever I wanted, not sit in one place and work hard. The second reason was because I knew nothing about animals, and I wasn't great at handling cats. I didn't have one of my own, the cat from my house that I was closest to, was my mom's and she was a hunter. I knew how to hold a sword and how to aim an arrow but I didn't know the first things about magic or animals.\n\n\n\nWhen I chose the class I was pretty disappointed. I was going to have to work again, and magic was pretty hard. I didn't even know where to start, I hadn't done any research so how was I supposed to know how to do magic? Then again, I was in a class about animals, how hard could it be to learn about animals? Then again maybe I would have to find out about magic first, because animals and magic didn't necessarily go together. Maybe it only works with dragons, a thought that made me shiver.\n\n\n\nWe did have a lot to do that day at Mr. Whiskers and Magic. At the beginning we had to walk around the whole room with Mr. Whiskers, who was a medium size tortoise with a long bushy beard, and answer a few questions about the class. He made sure everyone knew that there were going to be a lot of assignments. He told us from the very first day that we had a lot to learn, and that we couldn't mess it up for ourselves or for the other students. Then our first lesson began. He called us up into small groups and each group was given a magical artifact which we were allowed to use to learn magic. Mr. Whiskers handed out goblin tokens, crystal goblets, beach glass, twinkling glowworms and more. We didn't know he was giving them to us for a reason, he just smiled and winked at us.\n\nTeachers named us our groups and we went to the front of the class where Mr. Whiskers was, our teacher. I was with two other boys, all from my class in my grade. Jay was the dog and he was with a nice girl, who I might've known had I been with long enough. Then there was a chubby boy with glasses who they called Sulu. He seemed nice but I didn't really get to meet him until a little later. Our teacher gave us each an assignment, we were to learn our assigned magic. Jay was to learn to be able to summon animals from the other world to help him, I was given goblin tokens, Sulu was to learn what to do with twinkling glowworms, and the girl was given beach glass and had to learn to make things out of them. I was a little concerned about mine but I didn't say anything. Then we were told that to learn our magic we had to use the artifacts, answer questions about them, and we would be able to do it. Looking back I think that was when it started getting bad, we all started learning at different paces. I'm sure it wasn't Mr. Whiskers' intention but learning to do magic was going to be harder than it sounded.\n\n\n\nIn the beginning of the week's class, I caught up with Jay. He told me about how he was learning about animals by summoning them and talking to them. I marveled at how easy it was for him and I laughed at the situation. \"Aww, you're so lucky!\" I said, teasing him. \"Yeah, and you don't even get what I'm talking about do you? It's fine though, I've got to finish up soon because I've got a new assignment, I'll explain when we go to lunch\". I was going to go later to talk to Jay because I had something to show him. I was a good magician, I could do what Jay could do, by using goblin magic, which is real magic, not like animals.\n\n\n\nAt lunch I found Jay right away, he was the most popular kid at school and the easiest to find. A group of boys seemed to be meeting him and almost at the same time, girls were ready to talk to him. I pushed in and got his attention first. \"Do you want to see what I can do? I can do goblin magic\". He looked a little surprised but then smiled, \"Sure!\". So, I opened my hand and showed him a coin. I didn't know how lucky it was or that it was special in any way. I just showed it to him and he was pretty impressed. I told him that I didn't know anything about magic, but I liked it. I tried to wave my hand above the coin and change it. Jay said that I could do it, so I did. I tried waving my hand and it worked. The coin swirled like the wand on a magic show, and then it was floating in the air. I didn't really know what to do next so I just stopped. I was scared that I would lose control of it, or that Jay would make fun of me or something. He looked at it and then waved his hand, it fell into his palm. Boy was I impressed. I showed him again and he just kept it. I was jealous because I wanted to keep it, but I didn't want to be greedy and ask for it back. I left the area after a few minutes and went to eat my sandwich.\n\nLater on in the week, everyone was getting better at their spells and we got to show off our spells to each other. People didn't really care that we had different animals, just that we could do amazing things. Jay wasn't bragging about his rabbits like he usually did, though he seemed to be enjoying more about the magic and his animals rather than just the experience with it. I on the other hand was getting bored, we were still learning the same stuff. We were barely passing each other's assignments. When it came to showing off I was terrible. I don't know what was wrong with me, but I was so unsure of myself. Then I saw Jay. He called me over and told me that he wasn't sure what he was doing well. He was impressed by my magic, and asked me if I would teach him. I agreed, and he asked me how to summon animals. So then I summoned a chicken and showed him how to make it track him. Then, once I left, I asked if he would teach me how to summon a rabbit. He nodded and said that he would. I had a feeling that he was going to be special because I had a feeling that he was going to be the only one with rabbits.\n",

A small, rectangular mirror hung in the corner of my bedroom for as long as I could remember. I had never bothered to remember the mirror’s story, but I guess it had been there, talking and advising for as long as I could remember.\n\n\n\nThe mirror always knew what I needed and when to tell me. I had a feeling I had been using it for years, and I had a drive to respect it too.\n\n\n\n“I wonder what my mother’s face looks like,” I thought to myself. “I’ll have to go and ask you one day.”\n\n\n\nI put my hands on the mirror, stroking its smooth surface. I had always thought the mirror knew what I needed and when to tell me. It was always right. It was always there when I needed it.\n\n\n\nThen came the day when it wasn’t, and I was left questioning what it wanted from me.\n\n\n\n“You are to find an orphan child and adopt them,” it said. “Don’t worry, you won’t have to leave home.”\n\n\n\nI had just turned 13, and I never really thought much about adoption. I thought it was unfair to give up a child like that. On the other hand, I always wanted to have a brother or sister and I thought that this was a great opportunity to do that.\n\n\n\nI was too young to adopt – but I did it anyway. I got a nanny for the time being and set off to find a child.\n\n\n\nAfter a long search and a lot of pain, I found my child.\n\n\n\nTom was 10 years old, born and bred in an orphanage. He suffered all sorts of abhorrent things at the hands of some disgusting people but he always looked up to the top of his bunk and dreamed.\n\n\n\nI knew it was him when I found him. I didn’t know he wasn’t an orphan but it was still him.\n\n\n\n“Here,” I said, dropping a letter on his cot. “Take this.”\n\n\n\nHe picked it up and opened it. He looked at me with wide eyes and a big smile. This was his ticket out of here.\n\n\n\nHe told me his story, but in a way that made me want to hear more. I was fascinated.\n\n\n\nHe came back with me that night, and we settled in the car. He told me everything the whole way home. I found out his entire life story, and he found out that I was rich. He had never felt so free in his life.\n\n\n\n“Here,” I said, handing him a small bag with a handwritten note from my mother. It had been with me since I was born. “This is for you.”\n\n\n\n“It’s from your mother,” I said.\n\n\n\nI watched as he read the letter eagerly – as eagerly as I as. He hadn’t got any of the sort in years and he couldn’t believe that I would leave him something. He couldn’t wait to meet her after hearing all my story.\n\n\n\nHe read the note and was shocked to hear who it was addressed to.\n\n\n\n“To Tom,” he read aloud. “It’s from your father.”\n\n\n\nHe started to tear up, and I patted his shoulder reassuringly.”It’s ok,” I said. “He died when you were young, didn’t you say?”\n\n\n\nHe nodded, and then went back to reading.\n\n\n\n“Don’t worry,” I said. “I was in an orphanage too, but I always had my dad, and now you will too.” This made him promise me to leave everything to me when he was older.\n\n\n\nWe settled in that car, and I let Tom talk for hours. He told me all about his life, his hopes, his dreams. I loved listening to him and felt like he was just my brother.\n\n\n\n“Do I have to leave again?” he asked.\n\n\n\n“Oh!” I was nearly in tears. “Of course you have to stay! I want you to be my brother.”\n\n\n\n“Wow,” he said. “I didn’t even know that.”\n\n\n\n“I didn’t think you would,” I replied. “Come on. What do you think of my mirror?” He smiled widely and excitedly at it. Then he turned around to me and said, “This is the best day of my life.”\n\n\n\n“Really?” I said. “What about the day you had ice cream?”\n\n\n\n“No!” he blurted. “That was the day I met you!”\n\n\n\n“Really?” I said. “I’ll get you some now, if you want.”\n\n\n\n“Thank you,” he said. “It’s too much.”\n\n\n\n“We can share it,” I replied. “Don’t worry about it.”\n\n\n\nWe drove away that night, but Tom couldn’t sleep, and neither could I.\n\n\n\nI tried to calm him down, but then I couldn’t sleep either. I woke up one morning and found out the news.\n\n\n\n“Your father tried to kill me,” I said. “Don’t ask.”\n\n\n\nI went to Tom and told him. He was sighing heavily.\n\n\n\n“It’s alright,” he said. “I have a lot to deal with. I’ve got to talk to my father.”\n\n\n\n“Are you sure?” I asked.\n\n\n\n“Yeah,” he answered. “This will be my chance. He did this, you know.”\n\n\n\n“Are you sure?” I asked again.\n\n\n\n“Yeah,” he answered. “I am. I can’t believe he would do this. I never thought he would. He was always my father.”\n\n\n\n“You know what?” I said. “I think he did it because he loves you.”\n\n\n\n“You can’t say that!” he exclaimed. “It’s not true!
