I had expected a porter or light stout, but was pleasantly surprised when I smelled a powerfull helping of hops when I was pouring the beer.\n\nThis was an example of the much more elusive black IPA. (IPA stands for Indian Pale Ale, a bitter style of beer, dating back to the 19th century when it was made for export from England to the Indian colonies.\n\nNormally IPA's are blond, but the black IPA, when done right (as in this case) mixes the bitterness, and hoppiness with a well balanced toasty flavour profile.",

What I had always considered to be a stuffy old-fashioned product all of a sudden became an interesting subject I couldn't help but want to learn more about. \n\nLater that year, actually during the summer holidays, I went off to Portugal, and spent some days in Porto, visiting some of the houses, and liberally indulging. \n\nIn honour of that year and that holiday I decided to have a ten year old Tawny today. \n\nRegular tawny needs to have spent at least 2 years in wooden barrels, which are not completely filled, so that there is some air, allowing for oxidation of the wine (This is the difference with late bottled vintage and vintage port, which are aged in full barrels, producing no oxidation.)\n\nThere are also age statement tawny's, 10, 20, 30 and 40 years old, although this does not mean that every drop in the bottle needs to be at least that age. \n\nPrices rise steeply with age, but a 10 year old is easily affordable for, most. If you've never had a decent Port before, and find yourself having 1 bottle in the cellar, brought out twice a year for use in a sauce, treat yourself to a 10yo tawny, or a late bottles vintage, and open your palate to a new world!",

A time to relax, and a time to take our time. \n\nLooking around my whiskycase, I found that I had three different whiskies which where wine barrel aged (although the Bruichladdich classic laddie only partly so). So I decided to compare the three side by side and decide on which is best. \n\nThe Teeling Single grain (46ABV) came out on the bottom. \n\nThe Arran Amarone cask finish (50% ABV) (a type of Italian red wine) is quite good, but to my taste somewhat on the sweet side. \nThe Bruichladdich classic laddie (50%ABV), is the best to my taste.\n\nComparing whiskies side by side is always a great experience, since it allows you to compare notes, and more clearly identify exactly what you like and don't like in a certain whisky (or other drinks).",
