When I was researching tools to help verify customer feedback, I came upon various <a href="https://exact-data.pissedconsumer.com/review.html">exact data</a> reviews that praised its accuracy and comprehensiveness. This kind of precise information is invaluable for marketers looking to fine-tune their messaging and boost conversion rates. |

| memo | Hey there wcy. I hope you don’t mind this short message, but I wanted to quickly share this update with you on my Hive-related work. For the past 7 years, I've been deeply committed to Hive, working on projects like hive.io, vessel, dhive & more to strengthen our community, while providing reliable witness infrastructure to secure our blockchain. Recently, I've released an upgraded witness toolkit (peakd.com/@therealwolf/major-hive-witness-essentials-upgrade-v2) and celebrated 7+ years on Hive (peakd.com/@therealwolf/year-8). If you'd like to support my work, I'd be honored to have your witness vote. Thank you! PS: You can vote for me here: peakd.com/witnesses |

| memo | Hey @wcy I am launching a new solo witness and am looking for support. If you are unfamiliar with what I do, I wrote a post announcing my witness here: https://peakd.com/witness/@howo/annoucing-my-solo-witness. The tl;dr is that I've been on Hive for 6 years and for the past 4 I've been working as a core developer meaning I'm working directly on the blockchain code to add features. You might have interacted with some of them already like RC delegations, recurrent transfers or more recently I've been working on updating communities (new update soon !). If you want to support me, could you vote for me as a witness ? You can do it on this page https://peakd.com/me/witnesses. Thank you ! |

| memo | Hi ! I've been a core developer on hive for three years now, working on features that are now powering the chain and improving user experience like RC delegations or recurrent transfers and currently wrapping up some features that will go live in hard fork 27. I'm also hosting the monthly core dev meeting. I would like to carry on working for hive for a fourth year. I am looking for support on my renewed proposal as the current one will expire soon. It's the same deal as the last one. Could you review it and maybe vote on it if it's worth your support ? https://peakd.com/me/proposals/261 Thanks a lot ! |

| body | Harvey Mackay is quickly becoming an author and thinker that will be on my most formative books list (shameless plug, you can get my list of the ten most formative books in my life, culled from hundreds of non-fiction books, by [signing up for my newsletter](https://forms.aweber.com/form/52/1400977452.htm)). I first learned about Harvey from his book Swim with the sharks without being eaten alive, recommended to me from another great non-fiction book called The top 100 best business books of all time. Since I got into Harvey a bit late, I would liken him to Zig Ziglar, Jim Rohn and Seth Godin. He is like Zig because he offers a lot of knowledge on sales and that passes over into the areas of management, entrepreneurship and leadership. Through his advice, he often provides what he calls 'quickies' which are bite-sized chunks of knowledge or anecdotes that share an important lesson or takeaway. And he's like Seth Godin because each of his 'chapters' are short, meaning that they are immediately digestible and infinitely accessible to anyone that might not have large chunks of time to devote to reading. His book *Beware the naked man who offers you his shirt* offers numerous lessons categorized by different 'courses' on getting started, working your way up the company, selling, entrepreneurship, negotiating and more. It is a book that I wish I had read earlier in my life, but am still glad I got to it now. Here are the things that I enjoyed from Harvey Mackay: ### You can be shark-bait or you can be shark-proof You are shark bait for example if you are looking to buy a car and have no idea how much to pay for the car you want. Since the car salesman has that information, they know exactly how to juggle the payments, insurance, loans, trade-in, options, etc. so that he can come up with a figure that gives them the most profit. Once you get the information about how much the car is though, you cease being shark-bait and you become shark-proof instead. How do you become shark-proof? The trick is to educate yourself as much as possible and to never make the same mistake three times. Why three times? The first time is forgivable. The second time, it is because we are creatures of habit that we seem to not make new mistakes. Better yet is to learn from others (through education, seminars, classes, networking) so that you never make the mistake in the first place. ### What happens when you ask for a raise but get turned down You may know the advice already when asking for a raise. Keeping proof of your accomplishments. Keeping track of the exact amount of overtime or additional work you have done so that you can bring that to the meeting. Making sure you know how the company did (if they say that they had a lousy year and that their budgets don't allow for a raise, look at the annual report). But let's say that you get turned down, what do you do instead? Some of the advice here was new to me: * Ask for longer hours - You want to contribute your time and energy to those special projects that other people may not be willing to do or want to do. * Training - Will the company support you in gaining new skills or certifications? It does not have to be full tuition, even paying for a course or an exam can help. * Make a move - Maybe the raise and the additional responsibilities are not in your current department. Will management support you in making the move to another department where your salary requirements and career goals can be met? ### The ten thousand dollar rule Is there something that you cannot seem to do no matter what you try or do? Maybe it is waking up early in the morning or getting to meetings on time. Harvey suggests the ten thousand dollar rule (the amount of money should be big enough to get you motivated). Let's say that you have a problem getting to work on time. Imagine that you were offered $10,000 if you were never late to work once for the next year. Would you do it? Likely yes. Except that the company is not going to offer you $10,000, only you think that they will. In this case, you know that you can do it, it is really a matter of motivation of getting to work on time. ### Advice on starting up * You don't need a new idea - many businesses that take for granted are profitable. They're not seven-figure or eight-figure businesses like those in Silicon Valley but businesses such as plumbers, furnace technicians, flower shops, etc. are making decent six figures. * Who are your customers? The wrong answer is everyone. The right answer is big enough to be profitable, but small enough for you to be able to service it thoroughly. As Paul Graham says, do things that don't scale when you start out and then figure out how you can scale later. * Why buy your product or service? The wrong answer is everyone needs it. The right answer is related to the above question, figure out who your smallest audience is that you can serve and serve those people. * Who is my competition? If there isn't any competition, either you have a rare unicorn or there isn't a market for it. Which do you think it really is? * What advantages do I offer a customer over the competition? It's a good idea to know what your competition offers and how you can differentiate from them. * What advantages does my organization have over the competition? Related, but slightly different to the question above. McDonalds spends billions on advertising and promotion. You may be able to beat McDonalds in other categories (price, quality, cleanliness, store layout, service, etc.) but you won't be able to spend billions like McDonalds does and pull in customers. ### Learn from your competitors I thought this was an interesting anecdote. Harvey, when he started as a salesman, found the best salesman in the office and tried to get him to mentor Harvey. He would get him coffee, offer to do admin work, anything so that the salesman could share what he knew about selling to Harvey. One day, the salesman brought Harvey along on a car ride and they went to one of their competitors parking lots. They followed a truck along to one of the salesman's best customers. The salesman knew then that the customer was lying about their business and their budget and he went back to the office to create a new proposal based on the volume he now realized the customer used. ### Don't waste waste I remember a story about a lumber company who took saw dust, which they thought of as waste, and turned it into firewood. They took what other lumber companies at the time saw as 'waste' and decided to turn that waste into another business. This is a great lesson for your company. What do you think of as 'waste' at your company? And how can you turn it into something that can be profitable? ----- I'm excited to read more of Harvey's books. What do you think of his advice? How will you incorporate some of those lessons into your business or life? |

As Paul Graham says, do things that don't scale when you start out and then figure out how you can scale later. \n* Why buy your product or service? The wrong answer is everyone needs it. The right answer is related to the above question, figure out who your smallest audience is that you can serve and serve those people. \n* Who is my competition? If there isn't any competition, either you have a rare unicorn or there isn't a market for it. Which do you think it really is? \n* What advantages do I offer a customer over the competition? It's a good idea to know what your competition offers and how you can differentiate from them. \n* What advantages does my organization have over the competition? Related, but slightly different to the question above. McDonalds spends billions on advertising and promotion. You may be able to beat McDonalds in other categories (price, quality, cleanliness, store layout, service, etc.) but you won't be able to spend billions like McDonalds does and pull in customers. \n\n### Learn from your competitors\n\nI thought this was an interesting anecdote. \n\n### Don't waste waste \n\nI remember a story about a lumber company who took saw dust, which they thought of as waste, and turned it into firewood. They took what other lumber companies at the time saw as 'waste' and decided to turn that waste into another business. \n\nThis is a great lesson for your company. What do you think of as 'waste' at your company? And how can you turn it into something that can be profitable? \n\n-----\n\nI'm excited to read more of Harvey's books. What do you think of his advice? How will you incorporate some of those lessons into your business or life?",

| body | When Jim Rohn was young, he quit high school, jokingly because he said that he was smart enough. This, as it turned out, was one of the few major mistakes that he had made in his life. He was eager to start working and thought that it was easy enough to get a job and to make a living. Of course, there is a difference between making a living and making a life. He then got married, and he made a lot of promises to his wife which he felt was just around the corner. He was ambitious. He worked hard. Surely his success was coming. However, after working for a number of years, he was not getting the success that he wanted. He started to realize that hard work alone would not do it. Sound familiar? It does to me. His life turned around when he met a special person named Earl Shoaff. Earl taught him the seven strategies for wealth and happiness and this transformed his life. Jim learned from Earl, and now I share with you what I learned from Jim Rohn. ### Five key words Those five key words are Fundamentals, Wealth, Happiness, Discipline and Success. Let's break down each one in turn: * **Fundamentals** - Mr Shoaff told Jim that there are always a half-dozen things that make eighty percent of the difference. It is like the 80 - 20 rule. What are the 20% of the things in your life that make 80% of the difference? For me, that's exercise, writing, reading, sleeping well, eating right and improving by 1% every single day. What are the 20% activities in your life? * **Wealth** - Everybody has a different definition of wealth. In fact, it is up to you to define what being 'wealthy' means to you. You can be wealthy as in financial wealth, but you can also be wealthy in relationships, wealthy in love, wealthy in knowledge. What is key here is to have a clear vision of what wealthy means to you so that you have a clear goal to work towards. * **Happiness** - Happiness, like wealth, also has many definitions. What I like about how Jim defines it is it is not a general feeling or state of mind, but rather, it is a *method of thinking* that organizes feelings, activities and lifestyle. It is a way of interpreting the world and its events. That is, you can be happy in spite of what the world throws at you. * **Discipline** - Discipline is a key trait to have when achieving success of any kind. What are you committing to? What will you give up to achieve your goal? With discipline comes another key to success: action. Lots of people want to write a book or start a business, but what are they doing right now to get there? Ramit Sethi shared a story about one of his friends who wanted to run three times a week. Ramit told her that she should instead run once a week. Her friend then gave him a strange look and said "why would I want to do that?" Rather than running once a week, she would rather dream of running three times a week. * **Success** - Success, like the other key words, has multiple layers and multiple definitions. Everybody has their own definition of success. What's interesting in how Jim defines success is that it is about turning away from something to turn toward something better. Success is moving from sitting on the couch to walking on the treadmill 10 minutes a day. ### Strategy 1 - Goals You're probably thinking what I thought when I read this first strategy. Goals? Who has time to write down goals? Let's get started now! But in fact, writing goals down is something that helps give you direction. I have both a goals list and a dreams list that I work towards every day. My goals are more short term (as it is hard to see that far ahead in the future) and my dreams are long term (10 year dreams). Have you ever heard that we often overestimate what we can do in a year, but underestimate what we can do in ten years? There's nothing wrong with having ambitious goals, but do now that you may be too ambitious and you might not achieve them. That's okay! The one thing that I would note is that when you are writing down your dreams, don't be afraid to make them big, huge. If you have your dreams written down, write down what it would look like if they were 10 times bigger. Want to make $1 million a year in ten years? Make it $10 million. Why not? Don't limit your dreams. ### Strategy 2 - Learn every day James Altucher, one of my favourite authors, shared his strategy for becoming an expert in something. He said that he would go to the bookstore or to the library and take out all the books he could find on a specific subject. He would read through and by doing this, he would be an 'expert' in a short period of time. He did this with investments before he started his hedge fund company. What do you want to be an expert in? Health? Wealth? Happiness? Books, podcasts, audiobooks are some of the best ways to learn from the experience of others. Any fool can learn from experience, but the people that shortcut their ways to success learn from the success and mistakes of others. ### Strategy 3 - Learn how to change Okay, you're listening to audiobooks every time you get in the car or do chores. Maybe you're even listening to podcasts as you walk around the mall or walk the dog. You're reading every chance you get while on the toilet, or during breaks at work, or at home after dinner. But what are you doing to change your life? If your answer is not very much, well, doing all that learning will do you no good. To have more than you've got, become more than you are. Unless you change how you are, you'll always have what you've got. Income rarely exceeds personal development. Quite frankly, that makes it easy to improve your income. All you have to do is to improve yourself every day. You might ask yourself how do you get more money at work? It all comes down to the value that you bring to a company. If you increase the value that you bring to the company you work for, in due time, you will get more money. What are you doing to increase the value you bring to work? Are you developing new way to delight customers? Are you bringing in more customers? Are you making the company operate more efficiently? ### Strategy 4 - Control your finances What did I learn from Jim about finances? * Use the 70 / 30 rule - Jim talks about applying a 70/30 rule to your finances. This means that you should live off of 70% of what you earn. What do you do with the other 30%? 10% goes to charity or church. 10% goes to your investments. Finally, the last 10% goes to your savings. You can of course, take this further and save more money or devote more money to your investments. * Figure out where you are financially - Do you know what assets and liabilities you have? How much your monthly or annual expenses are? What you earn every month? Having a handle on these items will help you figure out where you need to be. * Taxes and other must-pay items - Is it annoying to have to pay taxes on your income and other assets? Yes. But Jim argues that these are necessary things that you have to pay for to make your city or country a better place. Who pays for hospitals? Schools? The roads? Yes that's right, your taxes pay for these things. Rather than bemoaning the fact that you have to pay taxes, why not change your perspective? The next time you have to send in a payment, be happy that you have the chance to do so. ### Strategy 5 - Master your time Some people drift through life. Come what may they just do whatever. Other people are 9 - 5 managers. They work from 9 - 5, come home, eat dinner, watch some TV and then sleep and repeat. Yet others are workaholics. They work from 9 - 5, come home, eat dinner, and then work some more. Their weekends are days spent in the office trying to 'catch up' or 'get ahead' on things they have to do. In fact, there is a fourth type of person. Jim calls this the 'enlightened time manager'. These individuals don't work harder, they work smarter. They leverage things other than their time to get things done. Maybe if they need to get more sales, they look at hiring more sales people. If they need to get some administrative tasks done, they delegate to others that can do the work. What are some other ways to control your time? * Figure out when you are the most productive - for most of us, it occurs within a few hours of waking up. This means that you shouldn't be wasting time on e-mails or meetings when you should be doing something that is really tough. Eat that frog as Brian Tracy would say! * Be disciplined - if you are at work, work. If you are relaxing at home, relax. Don't mix the two. You're not going to be as productive as you would be if you have divided focus. ### Strategy 6 - You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with Every few months, I think about who I am spending time with and whether it is adding to my life. It sounds a little harsh I know but I want to be very careful about what I am taking in all the time, whether it is the books that I read or the people that I talk to. I want to ensure that the things that are going into my life are positive and help me move forward in some way. I don't have time for negativity. I don't have time to wallow in the past. I don't have time for people that are not able to take actions in their life to get ahead. Just as I try to read the books that I am interested in, so should you also spend time with the right people. Are you interested in starting a business? Find those people that have started a business and spend time with them. Are you interested in getting ahead in your work? Find the people that are already way past where you are and learn how they did it. ### Strategy 7 - Live well Are you a one quarter or a two quarter person? Jim Rohn talks about his early discussions with Earl Shoaff who often told him that he shouldn't just be making a living, he should be making a life. Jim responds that maybe he should think about being well off financially before thinking about making a life, but Earl disagrees, saying that it is easier to develop this mindset when you are starting out. Imagine that you are getting your shoes shined and you are trying to decide whether you want to give one quarter or two quarters as a tip to the shoe boy. If you give one quarter, you might feel guilty all day or wonder whether you should have given them two quarters. If you give them two quarters though, you will feel happy, confident and abundant all day. Here of course, I assume that one or two quarters is equivalent to tipping $2 or $5 for a shoe shine. The difference is that it will make a huge difference to the person getting two quarters, and it will have a great impact on your own life as you see it. Be a two quarter person. ---- I'll be honest, I have read and shared my book notes in a previous post. I wanted to re-read this book though because I wanted to feed my mind with the right mindset and positive takeaways that I need to get ahead. What are you doing to get ahead? It's not enough to know what to do, heck we all know what to do. If it was a matter of knowledge, everyone would be rich and have six pack abs. It is a matter of applying that knowledge, so I'll ask you again, what are you doing right now to get ahead? |

He was eager to start working and thought that it was easy enough to get a job and to make a living. Of course, there is a difference between making a living and making a life. \n\n\n\n\n\nHe then got married, and he made a lot of promises to his wife which he felt was just around the corner. He was ambitious. He worked hard. Surely his success was coming. However, after working for a number of years, he was not getting the success that he wanted. He started to realize that hard work alone would not do it. Sound familiar? It does to me. \n\nHis life turned around when he met a special person named Earl Shoaff. Earl taught him the seven strategies for wealth and happiness and this transformed his life. Jim learned from Earl, and now I share with you what I learned from Jim Rohn. \n\n### Five key words \n\nThose five key words are Fundamentals, Wealth, Happiness, Discipline and Success. Let's break down each one in turn: \n\n* **Fundamentals** - Mr Shoaff told Jim that there are always a half-dozen things that make eighty percent of the difference. It is like the 80 - 20 rule. What are the 20% of the things in your life that make 80% of the difference? For me, that's exercise, writing, reading, sleeping well, eating right and improving by 1% every single day. What are the 20% activities in your life? \n* **Wealth** - Everybody has a different definition of wealth. \n* **Happiness** - Happiness, like wealth, also has many definitions. What I like about how Jim defines it is it is not a general feeling or state of mind, but rather, it is a *method of thinking* that organizes feelings, activities and lifestyle. It is a way of interpreting the world and its events. That is, you can be happy in spite of what the world throws at you. \n* **Discipline** - Discipline is a key trait to have when achieving success of any kind. Her friend then gave him a strange look and said \"why would I want to do that?\" Rather than running once a week, she would rather dream of running three times a week. \n* **Success** - Success, like the other key words, has multiple layers and multiple definitions. Everybody has their own definition of success. What's interesting in how Jim defines success is that it is about turning away from something to turn toward something better. Success is moving from sitting on the couch to walking on the treadmill 10 minutes a day. \n\n### Strategy 1 - Goals \n\nYou're probably thinking what I thought when I read this first strategy. \n\n### Strategy 2 - Learn every day \n\nJames Altucher, one of my favourite authors, shared his strategy for becoming an expert in something. He said that he would go to the bookstore or to the library and take out all the books he could find on a specific subject. He would read through and by doing this, he would be an 'expert' in a short period of time. He did this with investments before he started his hedge fund company. \n\nWhat do you want to be an expert in? Health? Wealth? Happiness? Books, podcasts, audiobooks are some of the best ways to learn from the experience of others. Any fool can learn from experience, but the people that shortcut their ways to success learn from the success and mistakes of others. \n\n### Strategy 3 - Learn how to change \n\nOkay, you're listening to audiobooks every time you get in the car or do chores. Maybe you're even listening to podcasts as you walk around the mall or walk the dog. You're reading every chance you get while on the toilet, or during breaks at work, or at home after dinner. But what are you doing to change your life? If your answer is not very much, well, doing all that learning will do you no good. \n\nTo have more than you've got, become more than you are. Unless you change how you are, you'll always have what you've got. \n\nIncome rarely exceeds personal development. \n\n### Strategy 4 - Control your finances\n\nWhat did I learn from Jim about finances? \n\n* Use the 70 / 30 rule - Jim talks about applying a 70/30 rule to your finances. This means that you should live off of 70% of what you earn. What do you do with the other 30%? 10% goes to charity or church. 10% goes to your investments. Finally, the last 10% goes to your savings. You can of course, take this further and save more money or devote more money to your investments. \n* Figure out where you are financially - Do you know what assets and liabilities you have? How much your monthly or annual expenses are? What you earn every month? Having a handle on these items will help you figure out where you need to be. \n* Taxes and other must-pay items - Is it annoying to have to pay taxes on your income and other assets? \n\n### Strategy 5 - Master your time \n\nSome people drift through life. \n\nIn fact, there is a fourth type of person. Jim calls this the 'enlightened time manager'. These individuals don't work harder, they work smarter. They leverage things other than their time to get things done. Maybe if they need to get more sales, they look at hiring more sales people. If they need to get some administrative tasks done, they delegate to others that can do the work. \n\nWhat are some other ways to control your time? \n\n* Figure out when you are the most productive - for most of us, it occurs within a few hours of waking up. This means that you shouldn't be wasting time on e-mails or meetings when you should be doing something that is really tough. Eat that frog as Brian Tracy would say! \n* Be disciplined - if you are at work, work. If you are relaxing at home, relax. Don't mix the two. You're not going to be as productive as you would be if you have divided focus. \n\n### Strategy 6 - You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with \n\nEvery few months, I think about who I am spending time with and whether it is adding to my life. \n\nJust as I try to read the books that I am interested in, so should you also spend time with the right people. Are you interested in starting a business? Find those people that have started a business and spend time with them. Are you interested in getting ahead in your work? Find the people that are already way past where you are and learn how they did it. \n\n### Strategy 7 - Live well \n\nAre you a one quarter or a two quarter person? \n\n---- \n\nI'll be honest, I have read and shared my book notes in a previous post. It is a matter of applying that knowledge, so I'll ask you again, what are you doing right now to get ahead?",

| body | When Jim Rohn was young, he quit high school, jokingly because he said that he was smart enough. Goals? |

"body": "When Jim Rohn was young, he quit high school, jokingly because he said that he was smart enough. This, as it turned out, was one of the few major mistakes that he had made in his life. He was eager to start working and thought that it was easy enough to get a job and to make a living. Of course, there is a difference between making a living and making a life. \n\n### Strategy 5 - Master your time \n\nSome people drift through life. \n\n---- \n\nI'll be honest, I have read and shared my book notes in a previous post. It is a matter of applying that knowledge, so I'll ask you again, what are you doing right now to get ahead?",

| body | My unofficial mentor and inspiration in Toastmasters is a man named Peter Kossowan. I have a great amount of respect for Peter because as one of the oldest members of Toastmasters at the club, he says that he is constantly learning new things every single meeting. Quite a feat for a Toastmaster who celebrated his 50 year commitment to Toastmasters in 2019! Every time we adjourned a meeting, he would often say something that nobody ever really thought about. Instead of saying "have a great day" which would be our typical response as we said our goodbyes to members in the morning, he would say "make it a great day". It was not until a few meetings later that he explained why he said it this way. "Have a great day" means that you are letting the day's circumstances affect whether you have a great day or not. In essence, a great day depends on whether or not things are happening TO you and whether those are good or bad things. In contrast, "make it a great day" assumed (correctly so I might add) that you have the power to make your day great. As opposed to having a great day, making it a great day means that YOU are in control of whether good or bad things happen to you and as Peter explained this at one of our Toastmaster meetings, a complete shift in how we perceived our life slowly started to take shape. Any day is ordinary until you make it extraordinary. From that point on, from the moment I woke up, I think about how I can live an intentional great life. If I can do ten of these things every single day, I consider a day well-spent. What ten things, you might ask? ### Exercise Do you get antsy if you have not exercised in a few weeks, for example, if you are on vacation (which really isn't an excuse) and you may not have easy access to a gym or any exercise equipment? I do! There's something about not doing anything active that gets my body revved up for something strenuous. I feel that humans are not meant to sit down and work on a computer all day and then to sit in a car and drive home from work, and then to sit down and eat, and then to sit down and watch TV until bed time. Action to take right now: Get up and get moving! ### Connecting with friends, family or loved ones I have had days where I did absolutely nothing social, where I did not speak with anybody else at all unless I had to. And I've had days where I called my parents or chatted with friends who I haven't connected to in a while. Between the two, I know which days I have felt much better at the end of the day. It is certainly possible to work from home, order groceries and anything you need to be delivered to your house, and be completely in self-isolation (may be a good thing these days with the corona virus), but not only can we accomplish more things together with others, I think there is a basic human need to connect with others. Action to take right now: E-mail a friend you haven't talked to in a long time. Ask them for a catch up session either through coffee or Skype. ### Writing I am a bit biased with this one given that I'm a writer and self-published author, but writing calms me down. I'm not talking about writing for a book or even writing to blog, it can be an extremely therapeutic experience to journal your thoughts and feelings every day (preferably in the morning when your mind is fresh and you have not been bombarded by social media or the latest news). For example, some of my journal prompts are: what are you thinking or feeling? what have you changed your mind about recently? What are your goals for the day? What are your dreams for the next decade? Over the course of a few months, I'll take a look back and 'audit' my thoughts and feelings. Here it is important not to censor yourself in any way as your journal is only for you and not for anyone else. Action to take right now: Get a notebook and write down what you are feeling right now. Make it a habit to write down your thoughts and feelings any time you feel that you need clarity in life. Writing will make it clear. ### Reading and learning Just as the body needs exercise to grow, adapt and strengthen itself, a mind needs books and educational content to expand. Ralph Waldo Emerson said that "the mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions". I get new ideas from reading the many books in my personal library. My approach is that I'll think about what I need in my life (say direction, personal growth, emotional mastery) and then look through the authors and books to find the right books to feed my mind. Jim Rohn says that you are the average of the five people you hang out with the most, and James Altucher says the same thing with books: your thoughts are the average of the five things you consume the most. What are you consuming the most these days? Is it social media? The news? Facebook feeds? Or is it books? Educational videos? Online courses? Action to take right now: Go to your local library and find a book to help you with something in your life right now. Don't have any problems in life? Find a book by Dale Carnegie, Stephen Covey or Tony Robbins to find out ways to add to your life. ### Laughing Have you ever heard that the average kid laughs 400 times a day and the average adult only laughs 15 times a day? Every day, I make it a point to laugh. Maybe I'll watch a comedy special on Youtube. Or I'll tell a corny joke to the people I'm connecting with. Or if I'm not able to do any of these things, I'll think about funny things that happened in my life. For example, in university, I joked with my friend that there was a japanese place that I would often go to that had stamp cards. Once you visit the restaurant ten times, I could get a free meal. My joke was that I would save up these stamp cards and then turn them all in at once, driving them out of business. After collecting a few stamp cards, I found out that the restaurant ended up closing down, leaving me with useless stamp cards that were not redeemable in any way. Action to take right now: What do you call an alligator detective? An investi-gator. ### Hydrate On most mornings, I like to brew myself some tea and usually it is one of the following: matcha, green tea, black tea or a milk tea powder. There's something about tea that is warm and fulfilling - I think it's in part from the many dim sum outings that I went to with my family when I was younger. It probably wasn't every weekend, but I felt that it was most weekends where we would venture out to a chinese restaurant for dim sum. If it is coffee, water or another beverage for you, make sure that you hydrate throughout your day. One cool trick I learned from a coworker was that if you are feeling hungry but you know that snacking on something would ruin your appetite or that whatever you eat would really not be that good for you, you can drink a glass of warm water. It will feel satiating and may help to curb your appetite until you get to meal time. Action to take right now: Fill a water bottle with water and drink it throughout your day. ### Sleep 8 hours My days are infinitely better when I get enough sleep at night. I don't feel tired. I don't feel like I need to take a nap in the afternoon after a heavy lunch. I am more productive in the mornings because I'm not trying to drink a lot of caffeine to wake myself up. Conversely, when I don't get enough sleep, I crash in the afternoons when things get really boring. I don't feel like I have the full energy to do the things I want to do. My discipline and motivation for doing anything is low. Of course, the funny thing is it is completely within our power the majority of the time to get a good night's rest. And the trick is to prioritize sleep, just like how you would prioritize anything in life. Set an alarm or a schedule and follow it to the tee. If something tries to pull you away from your schedule, really think about whether you need to do it right then and there or if it can wait in the morning. Action to take right now: Set an alarm for 9 or 10 PM (however much time you need to sleep plus the time you need to get ready for bed). Follow your schedule every day (including weekends). ### Silence and breathing Sometimes, when I can't sleep right away at night or if I wake up early in the morning, I'll lay in bed and focus on box breathing. Focusing on breathing means that I'm not focused on anything else and it is a fantastic way to assess how I am feeling, physically, mentally and spiritually. I'll notice what pains or aches may be in my body at the time. I'll hear what thoughts and feelings my mind is racing with. I'll realize how I am feeling about my life in general. All this with just taking a few moments of silence to focus on my breathing. Action to take right now: Take ten deep breaths. Focus on breathing and listening to your body, listening to what is around you, and listening to what life is telling you right now. ### Get something done on your to do list When I say your to-do list, I'm not necessarily talking about work. It can be something from your personal life too. Maybe it is one of the things on this list. Maybe it's writing a book. Maybe it's writing an algorithm for that tricky programming challenge you have. Do one thing to get your to-do list shorter. Don't have a to-do list? Make one today! Action to take right now: Make a to-do list. Or if you have one, look at which item on your to-do list will help you the most and work on it right now. ### Be kind Being kind can be incredibly difficult these days. It is taken for granted. It can be used against you to do things you don't want to do, or won't get anything in return for. Unfortunately, it is the right thing to do, even if others aren't kind or don't return your kindness. All you can do is trust that kindness is the right path to take and that even if others aren't kind, you can hold yourself up high knowing that you did the right thing. Action to take right now: Do one act of kindness to a stranger today. It could be holding a door open for someone as they make their way through. It could be letting a car into your lane when others don't. ---- How will you make today a great day? What actions do you take every single day to live a good life? |

"body": "My unofficial mentor and inspiration in Toastmasters is a man named Peter Kossowan. I have a great amount of respect for Peter because as one of the oldest members of Toastmasters at the club, he says that he is constantly learning new things every single meeting. Quite a feat for a Toastmaster who celebrated his 50 year commitment to Toastmasters in 2019! \n\n\n\n\n\nEvery time we adjourned a meeting, he would often say something that nobody ever really thought about. Instead of saying \"have a great day\" which would be our typical response as we said our goodbyes to members in the morning, he would say \"make it a great day\". It was not until a few meetings later that he explained why he said it this way. \"Have a great day\" means that you are letting the day's circumstances affect whether you have a great day or not. In essence, a great day depends on whether or not things are happening TO you and whether those are good or bad things. In contrast, \"make it a great day\" assumed (correctly so I might add) that you have the power to make your day great. As opposed to having a great day, making it a great day means that YOU are in control of whether good or bad things happen to you and as Peter explained this at one of our Toastmaster meetings, a complete shift in how we perceived our life slowly started to take shape. Any day is ordinary until you make it extraordinary. \n\nFrom that point on, from the moment I woke up, I think about how I can live an intentional great life. If I can do ten of these things every single day, I consider a day well-spent. What ten things, you might ask? \n\n### Exercise \n\nDo you get antsy if you have not exercised in a few weeks, for example, if you are on vacation (which really isn't an excuse) and you may not have easy access to a gym or any exercise equipment? I do! There's something about not doing anything active that gets my body revved up for something strenuous. I feel that humans are not meant to sit down and work on a computer all day and then to sit in a car and drive home from work, and then to sit down and eat, and then to sit down and watch TV until bed time. \n\nAction to take right now: Get up and get moving! \n\n### Connecting with friends, family or loved ones \n\nI have had days where I did absolutely nothing social, where I did not speak with anybody else at all unless I had to. \n\nAction to take right now: E-mail a friend you haven't talked to in a long time. Ask them for a catch up session either through coffee or Skype. \n\n### Writing \n\nI am a bit biased with this one given that I'm a writer and self-published author, but writing calms me down. \n\nAction to take right now: Get a notebook and write down what you are feeling right now. Make it a habit to write down your thoughts and feelings any time you feel that you need clarity in life. Writing will make it clear. \n\n### Reading and learning \n\nJust as the body needs exercise to grow, adapt and strengthen itself, a mind needs books and educational content to expand. Ralph Waldo Emerson said that \"the mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions\". \n\nAction to take right now: Go to your local library and find a book to help you with something in your life right now. Don't have any problems in life? Find a book by Dale Carnegie, Stephen Covey or Tony Robbins to find out ways to add to your life. \n\n### Laughing \n\nHave you ever heard that the average kid laughs 400 times a day and the average adult only laughs 15 times a day? \n\nAction to take right now: What do you call an alligator detective? An investi-gator. \n\n### Hydrate \n\nOn most mornings, I like to brew myself some tea and usually it is one of the following: matcha, green tea, black tea or a milk tea powder. | body | Recently, I was introduced to Michael Michalko and Roger von Oech who both have written a number of books on creativity. Michael Michalko is the best selling author of Thinkertoys and Roger von Oech is the best selling author of A Whack in the Side of the Head. I have to say that I have been thinking a lot about creativity and lateral thinking ever since I was engrossed in lateral thinking puzzles as a young child and I think it is an area where I have a specific strength even though it is something that I rarely used in my work. The interesting thing about management consulting is that even though we are paid to think for our clients, my experience on projects is that we rarely think of new ideas or strategies unless we are paid specifically to do so (which as I mentioned is rare because the client would likely already be the expert in their sector or industry). I strongly believe that creativity can be applied to many areas of our lives and I'd like to share ten ways that I have introduced creativity into my life: ### Cooking and recipes Naturally, cooking and adjusting recipes is an easy way to introduce some creativity into our lives. I am often combining different ingredients together in different ways to create new dishes. For example, I remember coming up with a so-called 'white' dish - it would be a dish of all white ingredients - scallops, chestnuts, rice cakes, white mushrooms. The ingredients would all look similar but each have different textures. I also had an idea of creating a menu where all the names were puns so I thought of a dish called "beard cream" where I would put white sauce on razor clams (simulating the white foam that often results from razoring your beard) or "bloody chicken" where I cook chickens in tomato sauce. ### Daily routines We are creatures of habit, and for good reason. Can you imagine having to take a different route to work every single day? It would be exhausting and would leave us exhausted by the time we get to work. Routines help us automate our thinking so that we are not constantly thinking and evaluating the things that we do. On the other hand though, routines are not very good. I have been watching The Office and there's an episode where Stanley is doing his crossword and not paying attention to anything around him, so his coworkers cook up more and more elaborate things to see whether Stanley notices or not, to the point where Dwight brings a pony into the office and Stanley leaves without even noticing. That's what routines can do to us! It can make us ignore things that have changed. What does this mean for you though? It means that if you always hang out at a specific coffee place or go to the restaurant where you know the food and service are good, change it up every once in a while. When you go grocery shopping, sometimes go to a different place to shop. Or if you go to work always taking the same route, change it up once in a while when you're not in a rush to see what is different. ### Sports In previous posts, I talked about trying out new sports, such as boxing. Even though I don't regularly go boxing, I was open to trying new sports because it teaches me new skills, hand-eye coordination and it makes me feel like a beginner again. As much as I like to go into something as an expert or to not look like a complete newbie, I also try to find ways to humble myself to make sure that I am constantly growing, learning and improving. New sports will definitely do that to me and I know it can do that for you. Here are some sports or exercises to try out that you may not have tried before: brazilian jiu jitsu, rock climbing, boxing, kettlebell exercises. ### Books and magazines I almost never struggle to find books to read (my home library and my bookshelves have many books I have not even opened, let alone read), but sometimes I do feel like I should go outside of the authors and books that I know to understand what other authors or books have to say on the subject. There's a certain amount of fear I have of not exposing myself to a wide breadth of thinking and topics that might make me narrow-minded, so every couple of months or so, I will head to my local library and browse the shelves for interesting books. This is also a great way of finding ideas for books, articles or blog posts and I will note down the things that have caught my attention as I walk through. The airport can also be a good way of finding new books, though typically the airport bookstores have books that are popular and more likely to sell rather than the obscure titles. ### Websites When [ProductHunt](https://www.producthunt.com/) came out, it became incredibly popular really quickly. There was something about a site that curated some of the best products, services and websites that was missing on the Internet and even though I have since not used the site for a while, I like to visit from time to time to see what is new. Another great way to find new and interesting articles is Reddit or other forums where people curate the top content for you. Maybe you always go to the same sites to look for the news or to find investment advice or whatever it is that interests you - try out something new, say every Friday, and maybe you will discover something interesting. ### Designs The tool of choice for management consultants is often joked about, but it is true, it is PowerPoint. One of the key strengths I had was that I was never complacent about PowerPoint slides. Even when the content was the same from client to client, I would always look for ways to improve on the design, messaging and the graphics that was presented and I would try to never present the exact same slide twice, unless I had to. One way to find new designs for PowerPoint: search on Google! My favourite ways to borrow (well steal) ideas was to google search for the topic that I was working on and then 'infographic' or 'cool slides' and to see what others have created or designed. Some ideas were directly related while others inspired new designs or ideas for my slides. ### Restaurants It is hard to be creative at restaurants, but when I was working a co-op term and having lunch with some of my fellow co-op students, I found that there is a way to be creative. We go into restaurants with food that we typically know and enjoy. Japanese food -> sushi or ramen. Chinese food -> dim sum or dishes that we like. Greek food -> souvlaki or lamb shoulder. Those are the things that I enjoy and the things that I would typically order about 90% of the time. So creativity in this case means ordering different things that you would not normally order. Tim Ferriss has an interesting suggestion on this. He says to go to a restaurant and ask the waiter to bring you the most popular food item on the menu and another dish that the chef thinks is good but is rarely ordered. Or you can do what my co-op coworker did which was to order straight down the menu one by one each time he went to the same restaurant. He would order #1 first. Then the next time he went, #2. And on and on. In this way, he did not have to make a decision on what to order and he was automatically exposed to new things he may not have normally ordered if he stopped and thought about it. ### Coffee shops The first thing here is to develop and establish a rapport at a coffee shop that you like to go to. This means going there on a regular basis, maybe even ordering the same thing each time. Over time, if the same staff work there, they will remember who you are and what you order. Once you have established that rapport, you can then ask them for recommendations. I like to ask them for what they think is good on the menu but that people rarely order (like how Tim suggests for restaurants). ### Dating Back when I was single, I thought about different ways to meet other people. The best thing that I found was to do the things that I liked doing normally. I liked playing badminton. I liked going to Toastmasters. I liked reading. I didn't want to go to something just so that I could meet someone (for example, one of my family friends recommended I go to church! Except I didn't like going to church so going to church just to meet someone could horribly backfire.) How do you find new people outside of your social circles? Dating apps can be a good way to find people that are outside of your social circles. They are people that you most likely would not normally meet or run into and can be a good way of 'injecting' some new people into your life. ### Events Do you do the same thing every weekend? Or do you do nothing on the weekends? Locally, we have a site where people can post different events that are going on, when they happen and where they occur. Events such as farmer's markets, speakers that may be flying in to give a talk, open conferences, outdoor events, family fun, and more. The events calendar can be a great way to find things that are happening in your city that you may not be aware of and to do something other than sitting on your couch in front of your TV on the weekend. ----- What about you? How do you inject creativity into your life? How do you get yourself out of your routines? How do you find new things to do and enjoy? |
