| body | Regulations in the crypto currency eco-system is something rather confusing. I'll clarify the aims of the regulations first, explain why they could work or not, then dive into the "interesting" country regulations (I won't cover countries that have minor impact on the crypto eco-system). Note: this is a work in progress but I still posted it since there is still a lot to research ## Clarifications ### Clarification: regulation of exchanges The regulation of exchanges is typically designed to try to protect the users living in the same country. As in, I doubt people writing laws for exchanges based in New York state care about users based in Japan. However, even if users are based abroad, they will still benefit of some of the advantages of trading on a regulated exchange: more control by a non-corrupted (well, let's say "less corrupted") government. Why could it work? We all like to know our money is safe, having your a part of your life savings in crypto can be stressful enough, so having it on a regulated exchange can take some of that pressure off. Why could it fail? A given country/state can only try to regulate the exchanges that are based in their own country/state. So nothing stops everyone to stop using those regulated exchanges (use only the ones located outside that country/state) ### Clarification: regulation on crypto currencies So that's the thing about crypto currencies, if you read the previous point on "Clarification: regulation of exchanges" then you will understand that unless there is worldwide ban on crypto exchanges, there is no way to stop people from trading crypto currencies. And soon enough (there are many projects in the makings), there will be many decentralised crypto exchanges: exchanges that are not running on a server, but simultaneously on each computer of users of the exchange. This will make crypto currency trading truly unstoppable. ### Clarification: regulation on companies launching ICOs That's a funny one since it has very meaningful economical impact. Each country deciding to ban ICOs to happen in their country prevent a huge amount of money to pour into their economy. In the opposite way, each country legalizing/regulating ICOs is opening the door for truck loads of money and hundreds of talented cutting edge companies who are dying to find a decent jurisdiction to launch their ICO. ICOs have been completely disrupting the VC model and are challenging the way people think, not only about money, but about the value attached to a stock. Stock is something very regulated and formatted, while ICOs have "no set format", they challenge every pre-conception about "how should holders be rewarded, should they have any power at all, and so on". The ICO world is wild and it does come with a lot of excitement, confusion and risks: not something every government likes. ### Clarification: regulation on persons participating in ICOs Nowadays you see many ICOs putting warnings such as "citizens from USA & China are not allowed to participate". Although it seems to work since users participating to ICOs often need to go through KYC/AML verification, it does not stop people from those nations to trade the relevant tokens once it is released on crypto currency exchanges. ### Regulation per country #### Japan [businessinsider.de/bitcoin-price-spikes-as-japan-recognizes-it-as-a-legal-payment-method-2017-4](http://businessinsider.de/bitcoin-price-spikes-as-japan-recognizes-it-as-a-legal-payment-method-2017-4) - April 2017 - Bitcoin spikes after Japan says it's a legal payment method Japanese regulated exchanges: * quoine.com - Quoine (Quoinex and Qryptos) * bitflyer.jp * bitcoinbank.co.jp - Bit Bank Corporation * sbivc.co.jp - SBI Virtual Currencies * bittrade.co.jp - Bit Trade * btcbox.co.jp - BTC Box * bitpoint.co.jp - Bit point Japan * fisco.co.jp - Fisco Virtual Currency Exchange * techbureau.jp - Tech Bureau * coin.z.com/jp/index.html - GMO coin * moneypartners-group.co.jp/english - Money Partners Japanese regulated exchanges: https://www.techinasia.com/japan-approved-crypto-exchanges Japanese regulated exchanges: https://cryptocoinmastery.com/japan-just-licensed-11-cryptocurrency-exchanges #### USA New Yorks state Granted licenses and charters: "After rigorous review, DFS has approved five firms for virtual currency charters or licenses, while denying those applications that did not meet DFS’s standards. "body": "Regulations in the crypto currency eco-system is something rather confusing. I'll clarify the aims of the regulations first, explain why they could work or not, then dive into the \"interesting\" country regulations (I won't cover countries that have minor impact on the crypto eco-system).\n\nNote: this is a work in progress but I still posted it since there is still a lot to research\n\n## Clarifications\n\n### Clarification: regulation of exchanges\n\nThe regulation of exchanges is typically designed to try to protect the users living in the same country. As in, I doubt people writing laws for exchanges based in New York state care about users based in Japan. However, even if users are based abroad, they will still benefit of some of the advantages of trading on a regulated exchange: more control by a non-corrupted (well, let's say \"less corrupted\") government.\n\nWhy could it work? We all like to know our money is safe, having your a part of your life savings in crypto can be stressful enough, so having it on a regulated exchange can take some of that pressure off.\n\nWhy could it fail? A given country/state can only try to regulate the exchanges that are based in their own country/state. So nothing stops everyone to stop using those regulated exchanges (use only the ones located outside that country/state)\n\n### Clarification: regulation on crypto currencies\n\nSo that's the thing about crypto currencies, if you read the previous point on \"Clarification: regulation of exchanges\" then you will understand that unless there is worldwide ban on crypto exchanges, there is no way to stop people from trading crypto currencies.\n\nAnd soon enough (there are many projects in the makings), there will be many decentralised crypto exchanges: exchanges that are not running on a server, but simultaneously on each computer of users of the exchange. This will make crypto currency trading truly unstoppable.\n\n\n### Clarification: regulation on companies launching ICOs\n\nThat's a funny one since it has very meaningful economical impact.\n\nEach country deciding to ban ICOs to happen in their country prevent a huge amount of money to pour into their economy.\n\nIn the opposite way, each country legalizing/regulating ICOs is opening the door for truck loads of money and hundreds of talented cutting edge companies who are dying to find a decent jurisdiction to launch their ICO.\n\nICOs have been completely disrupting the VC model and are challenging the way people think, not only about money, but about the value attached to a stock. | body | This is the first beginner trader question. That's a good one, in the sense that it brings up a LOT more questions. "What makes a good/bad exchange?" is probably a better question actually. I will here tackle a few important points that I think will help you decide what is a good exchange, for your style (i.e. conservative or risk taker). ### Heads Up: Registration on exchanges Registration on crypto exchanges goes in 2 steps: 1. Sign up with email, password and other security setup (always activate 2FA) 2. KYC/AML verification: full name, passport picture, proof of address, and so on The 2nd step (KYC/AML verification) takes between 2 days and ... 3 weeks! So better sign up and do the KYC/AML verification as soon as you can. ### Regulation In a nutshell: only use regulated crypto exchanges if you want to be on the safest side of thing Most countries do NOT regulate crypto currency exchange (almost no laws restricting them on what they can do). It is very surprising in the sense that any bank or exchange to trade stock/bonds (and other traditional financial instruments) is always very regulated: it must follow many strict rules imposed by law. Users of the regulated exchanges are much more protected: - the CEO and all the employees are known - funds have to be insured - and so on In the USA, the state of New York is regulating crypto currency exchanges, it includes [CoinBase.com](http://www.CoinBase.com) (hence GDAX, since belonging to the same company). Japan also decided to regulate exchanges and gave licenses to 11 crypto currency exchanges, such as Quoine (who owns [Quoinex](http://www.Quoinex.com) and [Qryptos](http://www.Qryptos.com)). So if you are conservative, and want to be on the safe side of thing, you probably want to only trade on regulated exchanges at first. ### Company history Age: an old exchange is a usually a good sign, but "old" only means around 5 years old since the crypto space is so new. Hacking: double check (via quick googling) the hacking history of the exchange you consider using. If hesitating on signing up, it'll probably help you decide. ### Reputation & reviews Crypto exchange do get reviews. For instance, [digiconomist.net](https://digiconomist.net) reviews exchanges with a clear list of rating criteria. Reputation can be hard to track via googling since you often get a lot of "noise", forums with 20-pages long threads with angry users complaining. But if you have time to clear that up, you might be able to find very valuable information. ### Fiat deposit: Processing time Funding a crypto exchange account with fiat currency via bank transfer is slow, very slow. It can take from 2 to 5 working days. Each exchange seems to have different processing time according to which country you send your money from. Some things that increase slowness: - you send your fiat currency money to an exchange located on the other side of the planet - banks only work 9 to 5, Monday to Friday, and when there is no public holiday - the exchange you go through needs extra time to process fiat deposit for safety reasons You'll quickly learn that funding your account can take a lot of time. One way to go around it if you're not funding with much money is to use a bank card instead of doing a bank transfer. You will be limited by the amount and the fees will be high (around 3%!) but you will have an "instant experience", which is sometimes worth it. Unfortunately, often the only way to find out how long it takes to fund an account on a crypto exchange from a bank account in a given country is to try it yourself. ### Fiat withdrawals: Processing time Withdrawing fiat currency from a crypto exchange via bank transfer is slow, very slow. Each exchange seems to have different processing time according to which country you send your money to. Unfortunately, often the only way to find out how long it takes to withdraw from an account on a crypto exchange to a bank account in a given country is to try it yourself. ### Crypto deposits: Processing time As far as my experience goes, the processing time for receiving crypto currencies is always very fast. ### Crypto withdrawals: Processing time Usually, all exchanges execute transactions instantly: you send any crypto via the relevant network and only the speed of that network determines how much time the transfer takes. However, there are exceptions such as Quoinex and Qryptos who have a 24h processing time. They say it is for safety reasons, as the funds of their clients are on cold storage. ### Fees for trading, deposit Fees across exchanges can change a lot. Some have flat fees: same percentage fee regardless of the type of trade. Some have different fees according to the type of trade. My tip: you may not want to focus too much on fees since it can get quite time consuming to look into that, and taking certain trading decision "just" based on the fact that it'll make you save trading fees might not be the best Quick explanation about "taker" and "maker" (mentioned below) on [money.stackexchange.com/questions/63044/maker-taker-fees-can-somebody-explain-in-plain-english](https://money.stackexchange.com/questions/63044/maker-taker-fees-can-somebody-explain-in-plain-english) But here are a few examples of fee structures: - GDAX: [zero “maker” fee but “taker” fees of 0.25% if BTC involved and 0.3% if ETH involved](https://www.gdax.com/fees/BTC-EUR); deposits are free, [withdrawal in fiat via SEPA costs 0.15 cents](https://support.gdax.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2430101-how-to-deposit-and-withdraw-eur) and [withdrawal in crypto are free](https://support.gdax.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2425097-what-are-the-fees-on-gdax-) - [Quoinex](https://quoinex.com/): [trading in base currency pair has zero fee, other trades costs 0.25% (BTC and BCH pairs) and 0.1%(ETH pairs)](https://www.quoine.com/fees); deposits in fiat are supposed to be free but sometimes Quoinex does have partnership with a 3rd party bank to receive your fiat deposit so this 3rd party bank takes a fee (around 4 usd); [withdrawing fiat costs around 5 USD, but the price changes according to country](https://quoine.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115004931207-Fiat-Withdrawal-Fee-Structure) ### Volume By volume, we mean the value of all the transactions being processed in a given time. For instance, how many bitcoins, ethereums and Litecoin were traded on GDAX during the last 24h, and what is the USD equivalent worth? If an exchange has very low volume, then you can send your fund to that exchange, but there might not be enough other users on that exchange to exchange your currencies with. ### Fiat currencies listed If you are injecting money into the crypto world, then you want to find the exchanges that support the currency you send your money from. Note: you might consider contacting your bank to set up accounts in different main fiat currencies (EUR, USD, else) in order to be able to send/receive to/from different fiat currencies (hence to/from as many exchanges as possible) ### Crypto currencies listed You're a beginner, maybe, but you will quickly want to have access to many different crypto currencies that you discovered and developed an interest for. So you might want to sign up to those exchanges that offer these currencies. ### User Interface Although not a major factor of decision, over time, one gets to experience many different styles of trading platforms and develops a preference one style over another. As a beginner, you probably should try to aim for the simplest one, or experiment the complex ones with micro-money to avoid bad surprises. |

That's a good one, in the sense that it brings up a LOT more questions. \"What makes a good/bad exchange?\" is probably a better question actually. I will here tackle a few important points that I think will help you decide what is a good exchange, for your style (i.e. conservative or risk taker).\n\n\n### Heads Up: Registration on exchanges\n\nRegistration on crypto exchanges goes in 2 steps:\n\n1. Sign up with email, password and other security setup (always activate 2FA)\n2. KYC/AML verification: full name, passport picture, proof of address, and so on\n\nThe 2nd step (KYC/AML verification) takes between 2 days and ... 3 weeks! So better sign up and do the KYC/AML verification as soon as you can.\n\n\n### Regulation\n\nIn a nutshell: only use regulated crypto exchanges if you want to be on the safest side of thing\n\nMost countries do NOT regulate crypto currency exchange (almost no laws restricting them on what they can do). \nIt is very surprising in the sense that any bank or exchange to trade stock/bonds (and other traditional financial instruments) is always very regulated: it must follow many strict rules imposed by law. \n\nUsers of the regulated exchanges are much more protected: \n - the CEO and all the employees are known\n - funds have to be insured\n - and so on\n\nIn the USA, the state of New York is regulating crypto currency exchanges, it includes [CoinBase.com](http://www.CoinBase.com) (hence GDAX, since belonging to the same company).\n\nJapan also decided to regulate exchanges and gave licenses to 11 crypto currency exchanges, such as Quoine (who owns [Quoinex](http://www.Quoinex.com) and [Qryptos](http://www.Qryptos.com)).\n\nSo if you are conservative, and want to be on the safe side of thing, you probably want to only trade on regulated exchanges at first.\n\n### Company history\n\nAge: an old exchange is a usually a good sign, but \"old\" only means around 5 years old since the crypto space is so new.\n\nHacking: double check (via quick googling) the hacking history of the exchange you consider using. If hesitating on signing up, it'll probably help you decide.\n\n### Reputation & reviews\n\nCrypto exchange do get reviews. For instance, [digiconomist.net](https://digiconomist.net) reviews exchanges with a clear list of rating criteria.\n\nReputation can be hard to track via googling since you often get a lot of \"noise\", forums with 20-pages long threads with angry users complaining. But if you have time to clear that up, you might be able to find very valuable information.\n\n### Fiat deposit: Processing time\n\nFunding a crypto exchange account with fiat currency via bank transfer is slow, very slow. It can take from 2 to 5 working days.\n\nEach exchange seems to have different processing time according to which country you send your money from.\n\nSome things that increase slowness:\n - you send your fiat currency money to an exchange located on the other side of the planet\n - banks only work 9 to 5, Monday to Friday, and when there is no public holiday\n - the exchange you go through needs extra time to process fiat deposit for safety reasons\n\nYou'll quickly learn that funding your account can take a lot of time. \nOne way to go around it if you're not funding with much money is to use a bank card instead of doing a bank transfer. You will be limited by the amount and the fees will be high (around 3%!) but you will have an \"instant experience\", which is sometimes worth it.\n\nUnfortunately, often the only way to find out how long it takes to fund an account on a crypto exchange from a bank account in a given country is to try it yourself.\n\n\n### Fiat withdrawals: Processing time\n\nWithdrawing fiat currency from a crypto exchange via bank transfer is slow, very slow. \n\nEach exchange seems to have different processing time according to which country you send your money to.\n\nUnfortunately, often the only way to find out how long it takes to withdraw from an account on a crypto exchange to a bank account in a given country is to try it yourself.\n\n\n### Crypto deposits: Processing time\n\nAs far as my experience goes, the processing time for receiving crypto currencies is always very fast.\n\n\n### Crypto withdrawals: Processing time\n\nUsually, all exchanges execute transactions instantly: you send any crypto via the relevant network and only the speed of that network determines how much time the transfer takes.\n\nHowever, there are exceptions such as Quoinex and Qryptos who have a 24h processing time. They say it is for safety reasons, as the funds of their clients are on cold storage.\n\n\n### Fees for trading, deposit \n\nFees across exchanges can change a lot. Some have flat fees: same percentage fee regardless of the type of trade. Some have different fees according to the type of trade.\n\nMy tip: you may not want to focus too much on fees since it can get quite time consuming to look into that, and taking certain trading decision \"just\" based on the fact that it'll make you save trading fees might not be the best\n\nQuick explanation about \"taker\" and \"maker\" (mentioned below) on [money.stackexchange.com/questions/63044/maker-taker-fees-can-somebody-explain-in-plain-english](https://money.stackexchange.com/questions/63044/maker-taker-fees-can-somebody-explain-in-plain-english)\n\nBut here are a few examples of fee structures:\n\n - GDAX: [zero “maker” fee but “taker” fees of 0.25% if BTC involved and 0.3% if ETH involved](https://www.gdax.com/fees/BTC-EUR); deposits are free, [withdrawal in fiat via SEPA costs 0.15 cents](https://support.gdax.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2430101-how-to-deposit-and-withdraw-eur) and [withdrawal in crypto are free](https://support.gdax.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2425097-what-are-the-fees-on-gdax-)\n - [Quoinex](https://quoinex.com/): [trading in base currency pair has zero fee, other trades costs 0.25% (BTC and BCH pairs) and 0.1%(ETH pairs)](https://www.quoine.com/fees); deposits in fiat are supposed to be free but sometimes Quoinex does have partnership with a 3rd party bank to receive your fiat deposit so this 3rd party bank takes a fee (around 4 usd); [withdrawing fiat costs around 5 USD, but the price changes according to country](https://quoine.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115004931207-Fiat-Withdrawal-Fee-Structure)\n\n\n### Volume\n\nBy volume, we mean the value of all the transactions being processed in a given time. For instance, how many bitcoins, ethereums and Litecoin were traded on GDAX during the last 24h, and what is the USD equivalent worth?\n\nIf an exchange has very low volume, then you can send your fund to that exchange, but there might not be enough other users on that exchange to exchange your currencies with.\n\n\n### Fiat currencies listed\n\nIf you are injecting money into the crypto world, then you want to find the exchanges that support the currency you send your money from.\n\nNote: you might consider contacting your bank to set up accounts in different main fiat currencies (EUR, USD, else) in order to be able to send/receive to/from different fiat currencies (hence to/from as many exchanges as possible)\n\n\n### Crypto currencies listed\n\nYou're a beginner, maybe, but you will quickly want to have access to many different crypto currencies that you discovered and developed an interest for. So you might want to sign up to those exchanges that offer these currencies.\n\n\n### User Interface\n\nAlthough not a major factor of decision, over time, one gets to experience many different styles of trading platforms and develops a preference one style over another.\nAs a beginner, you probably should try to aim for the simplest one, or experiment the complex ones with micro-money to avoid bad surprises.",

| body | So you thought Bitcoin was private? Well, you're in for a lot of surprises. The truth is, it "intended" to be private but didn't succeed. Don't get me wrong, Bitcoin has achieved incredible goals and opened up the door to what is now called "the coolest thing since the invention of the internet". However, Bitcoin is not private and you should probably understand what this means: the limitations of the technology, the possible solutions and how can Bitcoin so-called privacy be removed. Bitcoin uses a public ledger, what it means is that all the bitcoin accounts are publicly visible. In simple word: all the transactions of all the accounts a public, so if I find out an account belongs to a given person, I can trace all the transactions linked to this account. Now the trick is to find a way to identify an account to a person, given that: a) this public ledger is here forever, b) spying agencies are constantly recording and analysing our data, c) this data analysis is only getting easier as our computing power increase exponentially. So yeah, acting as if bitcoin is private/anonymous means that you're betting on the fact that spying agencies with some of the most greatest processing power in the world will never want to find out anything about you. Which, maybe is the case, maybe not, all in all it's a bet, do you want to take it? that's your choice to make. As a result, we see articles popping up such as: - “Regulators Start To See Bitcoin As “Prosecution Futures”" [themerkle.com/regulators-start-to-see-bitcoin-as-prosecution-futures](https://themerkle.com/regulators-start-to-see-bitcoin-as-prosecution-futures) - “Sandia National Laboratories Reveal More Details on Bitcoin De-anonymization Tool” [livebitcoinnews.com/sandia-national-laboratories-reveal-more-details-on-bitcoin-de-anonymization-tool](http://www.livebitcoinnews.com/sandia-national-laboratories-reveal-more-details-on-bitcoin-de-anonymization-tool) |

| body | Note: I wrote "embracing crypto currencies", I meant "Distributed Ledger Technology" Just like many getting familiar with crypto-currencies, I went down the rabbit hole for some time. It was so much to take in. Weeks after weeks, spending many hours every day researching the field. Trying to grasp what it all meant. Even if you like the tech, who else can give more credit than banks? national banks? governements? even better: the IMF and the World Bank. So I went down the rabbit hole and searched for answers. | body | First thanks for the tip @stephcurry You made a small mistake in your tutorial, it's actually on the **"DEPOSIT"** button that you want to click, you can then select the "Coinbase Account" where the the text says "Select a Coinbase wallet and the amount you wish to transfer **TO** your GDAX trading account". Something else to clarify: You ONLY get free conversion from fiat to crypto (USD to BTC in this case) on GDAX if and only if you are a **"maker"**. That means if you ask for a price below the currently listed price (your trade request stay "stuck" until that price is matched). Sources: * **GDAX fee page on [gdax.com/fees/BTC-EUR](http://gdax.com/fees/BTC-EUR)** * "Maker taker fees in plain english" on [money.stackexchange.com/questions/63044/maker-taker-fees-can-somebody-explain-in-plain-english](https://money.stackexchange.com/questions/63044/maker-taker-fees-can-somebody-explain-in-plain-english) --- **More about GDAX** GDAX belongs to CoinBase, it's just "one of the 2 products" of CoinBase Inc. GDAX acronym stands for Global Digital Asset Exchange. It's the kind of pro trader version of CoinBase exchange. It's backed by the New York Stock Exchange & venture capitalists like Andreesen Horowitz. It was the first regulated crypto exchange in the US (since 2015). "All digital assets held in online storage are fully insured" they claim. "98% of customer digital assets are stored entirely offline” they claim. Preety huge volume: in Sept 2017 "day trade volume record of 650 millions USD across BTC, ETH & LTE" [twitter.com/GDAX/status/908757856513441793](http://twitter.com/GDAX/status/908757856513441793) See also [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coinbase](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coinbase) So yes, it does seem like a very decent platform and company behind it. --- But as always, don't trust everything you read from unknown individual (me!) so do your homework before using any exchange. |

Pourquoi devrais-je aller en Thailande apprendre l'anglais ? Steem on en effet. Et bienvenue sur Steem. |
