Below I have listed a few of the most common ways that expats generally make a living whilst living overseas, so hopefully this may give you a few ideas on how you can afford to make the move.\n \n \nWork Online\n \n \nThis is probably one of the most simplest ways to get started with, in the fact that you don't need to get any kind of work permit in your new country, any kind of special visa, or any other kind of approval. You can do this simply as a tourist with a laptop and internet access.\nDon't get me wrong though, it's easy to get setup, but that doesn't mean it's easy to actually make money with. A few different things to look into here might be some of the following:\n \nYoutuber/Vlogger\n \nThis could involve you uploading videos to YouTube on a regular basis and making money off the advertising. The niche in which the videos are based is entirely up to you, so there endless potential, but a lot of competition so be warned, you won't be making the big bucks over night!\n \nBlogger\n \nSimilar to the 'Vlogging' idea, is the more commonly known 'Blogging' one. Same sort of thing except instead of uploading videos you are writing your posts. Other than that all the principles remain the same.\n \nFreelancer\n \nThis is a very broad way to describe people who offer a service online on a more casual basis, as opposed to a consistent workload. This may include being a website developer, digital marketer or freelance photographer just to name a few. This might include having an online store, or offering a certain service online. Again the good thing about this is that you don't have to worry about the registration process in Sri Lanka, as you can just register the location of the business in your own country since it's all online!\n \nWork For Your Old Company Online\n \nThis one is probably only applicable to certain industries, but if you are lucky enough to be apart of one of those industries, then this may be an opportunity for you. This being, to keep your regular day job but simply do your work online instead of in the office. This will then offer you the consistent paycheck you are used to, while living in another country (Thank god for the internet!)\n \n \nStart A Local Business\n \n \nThis one may be a little harder than the other options, specifically in getting things actually up and running, and that being to actually start a registered local business in the country. This can be done quite easily, provided you do things the right way, but be sure to read the rules and regulations in place for your specific situation. This will also require things like government approval, certain visas etc, but certainly worth it if this is the avenue you want to take. By investing that much money and with the low cost of living here, living purely off the interest shouldn't be too difficult (provided there are no significant crashes of course!)\n \n \nWork For A Local Business\n \n \nThe last option is to really just get a job like anyone else that lives here. Not being a citizen you obviously cannot just walk up to a shop, hand in a resume and be working there that very same week, however the opportunity is still there if you want it. To do this the company wanting to hire you will need to sponsor you and handle getting your work visa sorted and such. The best bet here is to come over on a tourist visa, then once here speak to the owner of the business you are wanting to be employed by and see if they are willing to hire you and do the leg work to make it all legal.       "body": "This is actually something i found quite challenging when I first moved here I must admit.\n\n \nI always found it bizarre when I would visit a country such as Sri Lanka, and ask someone a question in regards to purchasing something or getting some kind of service organised (tuk tuk driver, carpenter, laborer for example), and  no matter what I needed or who I asked, the person would ALWAYS know someone who could take care of it. Whether it was a family member, a friend, a friend of a friend or who knows who else, the fact is they always knew someone who could handle the job!\n \nIt wasn't until I moved here that I realized how much making connections with things like that was just a part of the life style.\n \nBack in Australia it was easy to just jump on google and look up the closest plumber or electrician and give them a call and get them to come and do the job I needed. In Sri Lanka however, I hate to tell you but your old pal google isn't going to be as helpful as he once was back in your home country. You can't just google the closest timber shop, car dealer, restaurant and have a million options pop right up to ring and compare prices between. It all comes down to word of mouth and knowing the right person here.\n \nIt is going to be tough when you first get here i'm not going to lie, not based on the fact that you are limited on who to ask (seriously, there will be random locals walking up to you on the street asking you where you are going and telling you to follow them to their friends shop), but finding someone TRUSTWORTHY to ask, now that's a different story....\n \n \nFacebook\n \nOne thing I can advise you to do would be to join some of the Sri Lankan Facebook groups in your area for expats and foreigners. The people in these from my experience have been very helpful to newbies with any questions and advise they can give. Remember, everyone was in the same position at one point! You can post what you are looking for on here and in what area you are looking for it, and more often than not you will get a quick response from someone who can give you a name to go by with their personal recommendation. I have used these groups many times with great success.\n\n Trail And Error\n \nThis one is going to seem pretty obvious, but it's something that is going to go hand in hand with moving to a new area. That being, just trying new places in your area and seeing what you think of the service they offer.\n \nI hate to say this, but at some stage you probably will get ripped off a little here and there no matter how cautious you are, its just a part of being in a new country i'm afraid. But until you have someone else you trust's advice to go by, I think it's best to literally just walk around and check out the area of where you are now living and see what it has to offer. Speak to the locals, the shop owners (if you can) and see what advice they can give. They are always very friendly and willing to help foreigners. Go with your gut instinct and trust your judgement on the people you speak to. You can generally tell straight up if someone is genuinely trying to help you, or they just see an inexperienced foreigner and an opportunity to take advantage. Hopefully you will be able to tell the difference between the two, but if not you will learn fast! \n \nIt will take you a little while to adjust if you are from a country where business is very much online based and you can just search online for whatever you need, but you will get the hang of it, plus making connections is a good way to become apart of the community and meet some lovely people in the process!",

      "body": "One thing to consider when moving to a new country is how easily you will be able to communicate there on a day to day basis. Whether it be with locals, at restaurants, with bus drivers, shop attendants, and so on.\n \n \nSo it is easy to communicate here if you don't speak Sinhalese? Well it depends....\n \nAlthough the main languages in Sri Lanka are Sinhalese and Tamil, the majority of locals will also be at lease semi fluent in English, and the ones that aren't will usually know at least enough words to enable you to get your point across (with a few hand gestures here and there to help...)\n \nSo if you are from a country that speaks English fluently you should be able to get by here with that alone (with the occasional misunderstanding here and there, but for the most part it should be fine). However if you are neither fluent in Sinhalese OR English (or less commonly Tamil), this could pose a bit of a problem for you.\n \nIf you are just coming here for a holiday it won't be a huge deal for you, you can easily get a tour guide that knows your native language, and they will be able to communicate for you with anything you need done. However to live here permanently, I would highly recommend you get at least semi fluent in Sinhalese or English (or ideally both if you can). Without this you are definitely going to find it very hard to get by, even with just day to day activities I am afraid to say.\n \nAs someone from an English speaking country as it is, I wanted to learn Sinhalese to be able to speak with the locals anyway, I love seeing that shocked look on their face when I reply in Sinhalese when they ask me something in English, and just for the sake of learning a new language.\n \n\nSo if you are serious enough about making the move here, I think making the investment in yourself and spending the time and energy learning the local tongue is definitely a great idea. You'll be glad you did!\n \n \nFor those wanting to learn Sinhalese online, I highly recommend downloading one of the E-books here, they are very cheap and very helpful.
