      "body": "Grid Layout is a CSS layout method that is wildly overlooked compared to Flexbox. Both tools aim at providing first-class support for vertical and horizontal alignment. The difference though is that while Flexbox is a **unidirectional** layout concept, Grid is a **multi-directional** one.\n\n## Come again?\n\nIn Flex you will most likely setup a container like so:\n\n```\n.container {\n    display: flex;\n}\n```\nYou will then either add\n\n```\nflex-direction: column;\n```\nif you want the items aligned in a column, or leave the stylesheet as is to align the items in a row (the default).\n\nAs you can see, a flexbox container will organize its items either vertically or horizontally. I imagine this simple unidirectional workflow is a big part of why Flex is so much more popular than Grid. With Flexbox you would need a couple more Flexbox containers.\n\nAs for CSS (SCSS), it’s fairly succinct as well:\n\n```\n.wrapper {\n  display: grid;\n  grid-template-columns: 250px 450px 200px;\n  grid-gap: 10px;\n  grid-template-rows: 300px 200px 200px;\n  .left-content {\n    grid-column: 1 / 2;\n    grid-row: 1 / 4;\n  }\n  .header { \n    grid-column: 2 / 5;\n    grid-row: 1 / 2;\n  }\n  .center-content {\n    grid-column: 2 / 4;\n    grid-row: 2 / 4;\n  }\n  .right-content {\n    grid-column: 4 / 5;\n    grid-row: 2 / 4;\n  }\n}\n```\nAlright, there are a few new CSS tools you’ll need to remember, but there’s plenty of documentation and, best of all, it was logically conceived.\n\nTake those slashes for instance. The slashes separate the ‘start’ values from the ‘end’ values. To understand what is happening, my approach is the following: I look at all the grid-column ‘end’ values. Whichever is highest denotes how many columns my grid has. In this case there are five. With the same logic, it becomes clear that there are four rows. With that understanding in mind, changing a Grid child’s placement becomes a fairly trivial task. Just change its ‘start’ and ‘end’ values relative to the 4 x 5 Grid.\n\n## The elephant in the room\n\n*But what about cross-browser compatibility?*\n\nI imagine this document regarding browser compatibility will update with time: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/CSS_Grid_Layout/CSS_Grid_and_Progressive_Enhancement. As of right now, however, all browsers are supported and most don’t need prefixes. IE and Edge will need the ‘-ms-’ prefix. The other major browsers should work out of the box.",

      "body": "The debate is constantly evolving as both ISPs (Internet Service Providers) and 3rd party groups like OpenDNS and Google Public DNS up their games. If your internet is unusually sluggish, that’s an easy one, try a different DNS provider. Domain Name Servers from Internet Service Providers like Comcast have a spotty record when it comes to DNS uptime.\n\n3rd party DNS providers can also potentially provide **heightened security** and **speed**. Who doesn’t want that, right?\n\n## Increased security\n\nOpenDNS uses *DNScrypt* to double-check that the page you’re trying to access is the one that you’re actually accessing. In other words, imagine going to *bankofamerica.com* and filling out your security credentials only to find out months later that the page you were trying to access was a fake website. Malware has been known to do that.\n\n## Increase your browsing speed\n\nOpenDNS uses geolocation software to find which DNS server is closest to you and connects you to it. This server may be closer than the one your ISP connected you to. If it is, you will notice improved browsing speeds.\n\n## What about Google Public DNS?\n\nWhile it provides similar features as OpenDNS, it also comes with extra data tracking. When the features of Google Public DNS far out-weight those of OpenDNS, I would recommend it, but until then I’m voting for OpenDNS.\n\n## Anyways, let's start!       "title": "UX Case Study: Designing an Audio Editing App (explained with Don Norman’s vocabulary)",
      "body": "I am going to walk you through some of the design considerations I took when designing an audio editing app. I will use the UX vocabulary Don Norman introduced in his book *The Design of Everyday Things* to make things a tad bit more scientific (and interesting). If you are unfamiliar with his book, hopefully this article will give you a sneak peak into his ideas.\n\nThe goal of this project was to create audio editing software with collaborative functionality. As with most software that requires a large number of features, key issues undoubtedly were:\n\na) space management.\n\nb) proper indication of what the user can do at a given moment; in Norman terms: *signifiers* signaling the app’s *affordances.*\n\n**Signifiers** are cues (visual or other) that tell the user what something can do. If you want a good example of a signifier, look at your keyboard. The elevated nature of the keys signals to the user that these keys are, in fact, pressable. Surprise, surprise, they are.\n\n**Affordances** are what an object can actually do. A mug can hold tea, a table can hold papers, a printer can print.\n\n## First steps\n\nOne of the first steps necessary in creating a prototype of the design was to decide which features were essential. Space is limited, so some features need to be prominent and others need to be stowed one or more clicks away. My decisions began with a simple question asked from the user’s perspective:\n\n*How do I get one of my audio files to playback?*\n\nThis task should be immediately clear even to first-time users.\n\nWhen the user first starts a project, only three tracks will be created in order to make room for blank space that reads *Drop audio tracks* here (Figure 1).\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaw6k2xNRy3k68QkJ6ixVrV2px3Nox3q27NTBKvyQ1ec3/image.png)\nFigure 1.\n\nThough a more experienced user may know that she can simply drop one of her files onto any of the three tracks, this option both tells the user that the app supports drag/drop capability and indicates to the user that dropping an audio track on that very spot will do *something*. It is not totally clear what, exactly, but it will do *something*.\n\nImmediate *feedback* is given to the user when she first drags an audio file over the tracks area.\n\n**Feedback**, in Norman terms, is exactly what the name suggests. When the user performs an action, the system responds with visual, aural, or some other form of feedback to help guide the user about the effects of her actions. Good UX methodologies have helped guide the user to use fairly complex feature. Inadvertently, the user has also gained a basic system image of how the app is actually working.\n\n**System image** is the user’s idea of how an app or technological device actually works. In our case, the user most likely understands that dropping an audio file will register the audio file and its current time placement. Clicking play triggers the playback machine to starting moving in time, and, when its current-time value matches that of the audio file’s, begins playing the track.\n\n### What’s so great about a system image?\n\nPeople, conscious or not, will try to formulate a system image of how a device works. It becomes useful when the user is troubleshooting. What if the user wants the playback to stop? If that user is aware that the play button triggers the playback machine to move forward in time and play the audio files back, she will most likely know that hitting the reverse operation stop will stop the machine.\n\nUsers that can fix their own problems are happy users.",
