| body | I lost my dad on July 5th of this year. Very suddenly, even though he had been sickish for about a year. I probably actually lost him a long time ago, when he was diagnosed with COPD and refused to quit smoking. When he was in ICU for a week on a vent because his lungs were only at 50% function and refused to quit smoking. When he was in ICU for low sodium and was caught smoking in the bathroom - OF ICU - and refused to quit smoking. I have never smoked, though I have been around it my whole life. My grandparents smoked; my parents smoked, and my siblings smoked. My sister and mother have stopped cigarettes and are now vaping. Vapeing. Whatever, using the hookah pipe thing that makes me think of the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland. The whole situation is still pretty surreal to me. My brother took him lunch and checked on him a few hours later to find him slumped over the side of the bed, already gone. My father also drank like a fish. Now, if you said that to him or my brother they would both deny it vehemently. He only drinks sometimes. A drink at the end of the day is no big deal. But a drink at 9am the day your son got out of alcohol detox...that's a big deal. I guess what I want to say is that, regardless of what you may think, drinking excessively and smoking IS bad for your health. It does cause problems, and it can kill. I can't tell you that I know what it feels like to quit either, because I've never had to. But I can tell you what it's like to be the daughter of someone who refused to. The daughter who is now writing out thank you cards for sympathy flowers and visits. The daughter who now has to go through his house and clean out, sell, or throw away everything. Then decide what to do with it. I can tell you that 68 is too young to die suddenly. And I can tell you that this sucks, and I hope no one else ever has to do this-but I know they will. Take care of yourselves. If not for you, for your kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. |

\n\nTake care of yourselves. If not for you, for your kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.",

But I followed that one with ‘Sorta’ if you’ll remember. This time, it’s done for real! I received in the mail on Monday a check. From none other than XYZ Supply Company! I was told that it would take 7-10 business days. This Thursday would have been business day 11… The explanation on the check stub reads: “A review of your account shows that you are entitled to a refund. Please contact us if you have any questions.” As much as I’ve already said about them, I’m leaving this comment alone. Review of my account my hind end. Ok, leaving it alone this time for sure. With it being such a small amount, I’m tempted to frame it rather than cash it…but no, I want my money back. I’ll just add it to my Sonic Happy Hour fund! That’ll buy me a few unsweet teas with blackberry flavor. (it’s yummy, no matter what my husband says) Peace out! |

She also tries to call the Insurance Billing Department of XYZ Supply Company. She actually gets through in just a few minutes and is able to speak with someone. She comes back on the phone with me; they have re-submitted my claim electronically (mmhmm…heard that before) and it will be processed as soon as it is received. I asked how long it typically takes to have a claim show on the website and she tells me that, if it is submitted electronically, the claim usually shows within 48 hours. Flash forward to today, 5 days later, and still no claim. Anyone surprised at this point? Some may say, at this point or any time in the past 2 months, that it’s not worth the eight dollars to keep fighting this. And honestly, the eight dollars probably isn’t worth it to me. Eight dollars isn’t going to break my budget. But sometimes, eight dollars is a lot of money. Sometimes it has to stretch until next payday. I’ve been there before, and just because I’m not there now doesn’t mean that I don’t remember the panic that you feel once you realize that truly is all the money you have left. The main reason that I refuse to let this go is that if this is happening to me, it HAS TO BE happening to other people too. As much as I joke about it, there cannot be some notation in my medical records that says to jack with my billing as much as you can. I mean, I guess there can be, but the likelihood of it is very very teeny tiny. And if there is some such notation, I will find the person who put it there and we are gonna have words. Big, ugly, nasty, words. Now, I have to wonder. Do they do this on purpose? Do companies do things like this and then try to wait out the patient? To see if putting the patient off long enough will cause them to get tired of fighting it, or just lose interest? Is it just me, or is that someone’s job? I am almost certain that supply companies employ whole departments whose sole purpose is to take the notes of what a doctor or facility did and assign it a number so that it can be sent to the insurance company. I would like to think that surely it’s just an error, someone had a bad day and I just happened to keep getting people who were having bad days, but after almost 3 months my faith is beginning to waver. I call XYZ Supply Company yet again. When the guy answers, I ask to speak to the person in charge of Insurance Billing. “I may be able to help you, what’s wrong?” *What’s wrong is that I ordered supplies in February; it’s May now and the order still hasn’t been claimed on my insurance.* “Oh I can look into that for you, what is your account number?” Sigh. Ok, let him try. I give him my information and he pulls up my account; he spends about 30 seconds looking at it, if that. “Well it looks like the insurance has been working on hit since we submitted it, so you will just need to wait-“ *Nope. Insurance has no record of this claim. Still. I want to talk to someone who can resolve this today. * “I can send you to a level 2 person and see if there is something they can do about it.” More hold music. Not even good hold music! “Hello, is this Sarah? I was just talking to rep and he was explaining what’s going on with your account. We show that this has been submitted to your insurance company and we’re waiting on response from them.” *I’ve heard that before. I’ve also heard that it’s been resubmitted three times and printed and mailed in. Every time I call I get a different answer on what’s going on so I have no idea what the deal is with this claim. I just want it filed and done.* “Well let me look here and see.” Dead air. There is nothing more annoying when you call in to customer service and get dead air. Argh. Another tip-don’t have dead air. Even if you just make a noise and halfway read notes to yourself, let the caller know you’re still there. Please. For the love of all that is Holy. “Oh I see here where it looks like they sent it up for a write-off adjustment. Not sure why they did that, but because of the small balance they’re just going to write it off” *What do you mean write it off, like not file it at all?* “Right, they are just going to write off the balance.” *Ok, then I want my money back.* “Um, what do you mean?” *I mean that when I placed the order in February I paid for it. If you’re going to write it off, I want my money back. Today.* “Oh yes it does look like there is a balance available for refund. Would you like that sent by check or returned to your card? A check would be faster.” *Cut me a check. Please.* I have to wonder though, if I had never called would the refund have been issued? Or just sat as a credit on my account? Interesting. I’m betting it would have just sat there and I never would have known that they wrote it off. How many times does that happen every week to some unsuspecting patient?? But alas, I have no way of knowing. Not that I’m upset about that, but still. I get curious. So now, 11 weeks and 4 days after the date I placed my order, it is finally done. Well it will be once I get the check from them. And rest assured, if I don’t receive it on business day 11 I will be calling again. Here’s hoping that this is the last time I have to deal with XYZ Supply Company. I have found another provider for my CPAP supplies and will be placing an order with them soon-their billing department can’t be as bad as what I’ve been dealing with since February. Not to mention, deductible season has to be over by now. Maybe XYZ’s billing department can get their stuff together. Tomorrow…final thoughts. |

I’ve been there before, and just because I’m not there now doesn’t mean that I don’t remember the panic that you feel once you realize that truly is all the money you have left.\n\nThe main reason that I refuse to let this go is that if this is happening to me, it HAS TO BE happening to other people too. As much as I joke about it, there cannot be some notation in my medical records that says to jack with my billing as much as you can. I mean, I guess there can be, but the likelihood of it is very very teeny tiny. And if there is some such notation, I will find the person who put it there and we are gonna have words. Big, ugly, nasty, words.\n\nNow, I have to wonder. I would like to think that surely it’s just an error, someone had a bad day and I just happened to keep getting people who were having bad days, but after almost 3 months my faith is beginning to waver.\n\nI call XYZ Supply Company yet again. When the guy answers, I ask to speak to the person in charge of Insurance Billing.\n\n“I may be able to help you, what’s wrong?”\n\n*What’s wrong is that I ordered supplies in February; it’s May now and the order still hasn’t been claimed on my insurance.*\n\n “Oh I can look into that for you, what is your account number?”\n\nSigh. Ok, let him try. I give him my information and he pulls up my account; he spends about 30 seconds looking at it, if that.\n\n“Well it looks like the insurance has been working on hit since we submitted it, so you will just need to wait-“\n\n*Nope. Insurance has no record of this claim. Still. I want to talk to someone who can resolve this today. *\n\n“I can send you to a level 2 person and see if there is something they can do about it.”\n\nMore hold music. Not even good hold music!\n\n“Hello, is this Sarah? I was just talking to rep and he was explaining what’s going on with your account. We show that this has been submitted to your insurance company and we’re waiting on response from them.”\n\n*I’ve heard that before. I’ve also heard that it’s been resubmitted three times and printed and mailed in. Every time I call I get a different answer on what’s going on so I have no idea what the deal is with this claim. I just want it filed and done.*\n\n“Well let me look here and see.”\n\nDead air. There is nothing more annoying when you call in to customer service and get dead air. Argh. Another tip-don’t have dead air. Even if you just make a noise and halfway read notes to yourself, let the caller know you’re still there. Please. For the love of all that is Holy.\n\n“Oh I see here where it looks like they sent it up for a write-off adjustment. Not sure why they did that, but because of the small balance they’re just going to write it off”\n\n*What do you mean write it off, like not file it at all?*\n\n“Right, they are just going to write off the balance.”\n\n*Ok, then I want my money back.*\n\n“Um, what do you mean?”\n\n*I mean that when I placed the order in February I paid for it. If you’re going to write it off, I want my money back. Today.*\n\n“Oh yes it does look like there is a balance available for refund. Would you like that sent by check or returned to your card? A check would be faster.”\n\n*Cut me a check. Please.*\n\nI have to wonder though, if I had never called would the refund have been issued? Or just sat as a credit on my account? Interesting. I’m betting it would have just sat there and I never would have known that they wrote it off. How many times does that happen every week to some unsuspecting patient?? But alas, I have no way of knowing. Not that I’m upset about that, but still. I get curious.\n\nSo now, 11 weeks and 4 days after the date I placed my order, it is finally done. Well it will be once I get the check from them. And rest assured, if I don’t receive it on business day 11 I will be calling again.\n\nHere’s hoping that this is the last time I have to deal with XYZ Supply Company. I have found another provider for my CPAP supplies and will be placing an order with them soon-their billing department can’t be as bad as what I’ve been dealing with since February. Not to mention, deductible season has to be over by now. Maybe XYZ’s billing department can get their stuff together.\n\nTomorrow…final thoughts.",

I check the page, and do a double-take. I look away and back, because SURELY I am seeing things! THERE IS A CLAIM FOR XYZ SUPPLY COMPANY!!! What?! I am all kinds of excited and curious, so I open up this claim. My insurance company has this really cool feature (they may all have it but this is the only company I’ve had for years so I choose to be impressed) where they display the date a claim was received. Amazingly enough, my claim was received by the insurance company THE DAY AFTER I called the billing department and told them that either they fix it or I’m calling the Insurance Commissioner. Interesting. I’m sure the timing is merely coincidence. Now, you would think that this would be the end of the story. But no, that’s not how things go in my world. Remember at the beginning when I placed my order? And I had to call back a few days later and place a second order for my humidifier tank because it got missed on the first call? Well…apparently because it was a second order it was a second claim. Surely, since I had to call and basically threaten them to get the claim sent in they would have made sure any and all claims for me were sent in together right? Or at least made sure all of them were sent in at all? Yeah. Not so much. It bears saying that the contracted cost of the humidifier tank that I paid when the order was placed is less than nine dollars. However, that’s nine dollars of my deductible that I have already met and shouldn’t have to meet again. Not that my insurance company knows that I’ve met that amount-small though it may be-because XYZ Supply Company never filed the second claim. I could just absolutely spit nails (Is that only a southern saying? Well just in case for all you non-Okies, it means I was pretty mad). So I call the insurance company to see if they have the second claim for the humidifier and it’s just not showing up on the website yet. And, as before, they have no record of that second claim. I make my Monday call to THE HAMMER. She was amazed as I was by the fact that there was finally a claim filed! And as unsurprised as I was that the date the claim was received by the insurance company was the day after I called them. I let her know that, while one of the claims has been made, I’m still missing one. She advises me that, even though it’s for such a low amount, I should definitely have them file it. Especially since I already paid the insurance-contracted rate. Once again, I start calling the billing department for XYZ Supply Company. I start asking about my claim, and they tell me that it’s already filed for this date of service. Well, I’m not calling about that one. I have that one on my insurance, I need the second date of service filed-the one for the humidifier tank. And again it starts. “Well it looks like we need a prescription” No, you have the prescription that you need; you used it to file the first claim. Look again. “Oh yes, I see that now. Well it looks like the claim was sent in to your insurance company; you will need to wait for them to process the claim.” Well when I talked to them this morning before I called you, they show no record of a claim for this date of service. “Well we sent it in so they have it somewhere.” Yaknow, I am not accepting that answer. I am not going through this again for an eight dollar claim. I want to talk to someone else. “Ok let me transfer you to a lead.” Lead comes on. Lead gives same story. I refuse to accept this answer again, because I know that it’s complete horse hockey. I want to talk to someone who can resolve this issue TODAY. This has been going on since February and I had to call and threaten to turn you in for INSURANCE FRAUD before the first claim was filed. I want to talk to whoever I need to talk to in order to get his issue resolved today. “Well I can send you to a Level 3 person.” Oh yes, please do. Level 3 person comes on. At this point, I’m 45 minutes into this call and just about as happy as you would think. So I, once again, explain to the person on the phone what has been going on and that I want it fixed today. “We’ve sent this to your insurance company twice, so they actually have this claim multiple times. You will need to wait on them to process it.” No. No, they do not have this claim twice. They don’t even have this claim once! Fix it. Get it filed, get it done and get it done now. “We sent the claim in to them electronically” Ok great. Do you have some sort of acknowledgement from the insurance company showing that it was received? Some kind of confirmation code that it went through, or did you just assume that it went through correctly just because you sent it? “No, I’m sorry; we don’t have any kind of confirmation code or anything. We won’t, because it was printed.” I’m sorry. Printed? My claim was printed in order to be filed with my insurance company electronically? “No, once it’s printed it’s sent in to the insurance company on paper. It can take up to 60 days for them to receive and process it. “ When was it sent? And who sent it? “It was sent in on the 23rd of March, by our Insurance Billing department.” I want to talk to that person. I want to talk to the person who physically put my claim in an envelope and mailed it to my insurance company, “I’m sorry, that’s not possible. They only talk to insurance companies. I am in patient billing, that’s why I’m talking to you. The Insurance Billing department will only speak with insurance agents.” I don’t care. I want to talk to that person. I pay for my insurance, I paid for my supplies, I want to talk to the person responsible for filing my claim. “Well that’s not possible. They don’t talk to patients,” Fine. I want to talk to your supervisor. Do you have a supervisor? I want to talk to them. “Ma’am, my supervisor can only see the same information that I have. They will tell you the same thing that I’m telling you.” Fine, then I want to talk to your supervisor’s supervisor. “The Manager? Oh well they have the same information and will give you the same answer that I’m giving you.” So what you’re telling me is that I can’t talk to your supervisor; I can’t talk to your manager; and I can’t talk to the Insurance Billing department because I’m a patient even though I’m the one paying for the insurance?? “I never said you couldn’t talk to my supervisor.” Well you didn’t transfer me when I asked, did you? You just told me that it won’t do any good to talk to them. So what you’re saying is that I need to call my insurance company so that they can call in and talk to Insurance Billing because they are the only people who can delve any further into this even though I’ve been calling for over two months trying to get this resolved and this is the first that I’ve heard about them? “What I said is that the Insurance Billing department will only speak with insurance agents.” Fine. Once again I will call my insurance company so that they can call your people and get ME the answer that I’ve been asking for since March. “Ok great. Is there anything else that I can help you with today?” …seriously? Just a little tip. When you have a cheesed off person on the phone and you haven’t resolved their issue, don’t finish with your standard closing. You already made them mad. Just end the call as pleasantly as possible. No, thanks. You’ve done enough. So not only does my insurance not have my claim, all the people who assured me, multiple times, that it had been submitted to the insurance company electronically either straight up lied or didn’t care enough to read through the-most likely epic-notes on my account. This makes me even happier than I already was to begin with. And I was already pretty flaming happy. I call my insurance company back, so that maybe they can get ahold of the Insurance Billing department and speak with someone to find out what in the world is happening with this claim. My friendly insurance rep answered quickly, and I asked if there was a claim for this specific date of service in February. Shockingly, they show no record of a claim for that date of service. I stand amazed. I start telling my rep about my conversation with XYZ Supply Company, and how I was told that the people I need to talk to won’t talk to me because I’m a patient; my rep, who is annoyed on my behalf, graciously offers to call. He gets on the phone with XYZ Supply Company while I’m on the phone with him; and we hear the pre-recorded message that the approximate wait time is 12 minutes. This surprises my rep. Not so much me, seeing as I’m used to waiting 40 or more minutes. He finally gets through after waiting, only to hear that the office is closed for the day-please call back tomorrow. Hey, at this point I’m glad it’s not just me. I was afraid they had my phone number pre-routed to a recording. Finale, coming up tomorrow! |

I’m sure the timing is merely coincidence.\n\nNow, you would think that this would be the end of the story. But no, that’s not how things go in my world. Remember at the beginning when I placed my order? And I had to call back a few days later and place a second order for my humidifier tank because it got missed on the first call? Well…apparently because it was a second order it was a second claim.\n\nSurely, since I had to call and basically threaten them to get the claim sent in they would have made sure any and all claims for me were sent in together right? And, as before, they have no record of that second claim.\n\nI make my Monday call to THE HAMMER. Especially since I already paid the insurance-contracted rate.\n\nOnce again, I start calling the billing department for XYZ Supply Company. I start asking about my claim, and they tell me that it’s already filed for this date of service. Well, I’m not calling about that one. I have that one on my insurance, I need the second date of service filed-the one for the humidifier tank. And again it starts.\n\n“Well it looks like we need a prescription”\n\nNo, you have the prescription that you need; you used it to file the first claim. Look again.\n\n“Oh yes, I see that now. Well it looks like the claim was sent in to your insurance company; you will need to wait for them to process the claim.”\n\nWell when I talked to them this morning before I called you, they show no record of a claim for this date of service.\n\n“Well we sent it in so they have it somewhere.”\n\nYaknow, I am not accepting that answer. I am not going through this again for an eight dollar claim. I want to talk to someone else.\n\n“Ok let me transfer you to a lead.”\n\nLead comes on. Lead gives same story. I refuse to accept this answer again, because I know that it’s complete horse hockey.\n\nI want to talk to someone who can resolve this issue TODAY. This has been going on since February and I had to call and threaten to turn you in for INSURANCE FRAUD before the first claim was filed. I want to talk to whoever I need to talk to in order to get his issue resolved today.\n\n“Well I can send you to a Level 3 person.”\n\nOh yes, please do.\n\nLevel 3 person comes on. At this point, I’m 45 minutes into this call and just about as happy as you would think. So I, once again, explain to the person on the phone what has been going on and that I want it fixed today.\n\n“We’ve sent this to your insurance company twice, so they actually have this claim multiple times. You will need to wait on them to process it.”\n\nNo. No, they do not have this claim twice. They don’t even have this claim once! Fix it. Get it filed, get it done and get it done now.\n\n“We sent the claim in to them electronically”\n\nOk great. Do you have some sort of acknowledgement from the insurance company showing that it was received? Some kind of confirmation code that it went through, or did you just assume that it went through correctly just because you sent it?\n\n“No, I’m sorry; we don’t have any kind of confirmation code or anything. We won’t, because it was printed.”\n\nI’m sorry. Printed? My claim was printed in order to be filed with my insurance company electronically?\n\n“No, once it’s printed it’s sent in to the insurance company on paper. It can take up to 60 days for them to receive and process it. “\n\nWhen was it sent? And who sent it?\n\n“It was sent in on the 23rd of March, by our Insurance Billing department.”\n\nI want to talk to that person. I want to talk to the person who physically put my claim in an envelope and mailed it to my insurance company,\n\n“I’m sorry, that’s not possible. They only talk to insurance companies. I am in patient billing, that’s why I’m talking to you. The Insurance Billing department will only speak with insurance agents.”\n\nI don’t care. I want to talk to that person. I pay for my insurance, I paid for my supplies, I want to talk to the person responsible for filing my claim.\n\n“Well that’s not possible. They don’t talk to patients,”\n\nFine. I want to talk to your supervisor. Do you have a supervisor? I want to talk to them.\n\n“Ma’am, my supervisor can only see the same information that I have. They will tell you the same thing that I’m telling you.”\n\nFine, then I want to talk to your supervisor’s supervisor.\n\n“The Manager? Oh well they have the same information and will give you the same answer that I’m giving you.”\n\nSo what you’re telling me is that I can’t talk to your supervisor; I can’t talk to your manager; and I can’t talk to the Insurance Billing department because I’m a patient even though I’m the one paying for the insurance??\n\n“I never said you couldn’t talk to my supervisor.”\n\nWell you didn’t transfer me when I asked, did you? You just told me that it won’t do any good to talk to them.\n\nSo what you’re saying is that I need to call my insurance company so that they can call in and talk to Insurance Billing because they are the only people who can delve any further into this even though I’ve been calling for over two months trying to get this resolved and this is the first that I’ve heard about them?\n\n“What I said is that the Insurance Billing department will only speak with insurance agents.”\n\nFine. Once again I will call my insurance company so that they can call your people and get ME the answer that I’ve been asking for since March.\n\n“Ok great. Is there anything else that I can help you with today?”\n\n…seriously? Just a little tip. When you have a cheesed off person on the phone and you haven’t resolved their issue, don’t finish with your standard closing. You already made them mad. Just end the call as pleasantly as possible.\n\nNo, thanks. You’ve done enough.\n\nSo not only does my insurance not have my claim, all the people who assured me, multiple times, that it had been submitted to the insurance company electronically either straight up lied or didn’t care enough to read through the-most likely epic-notes on my account. This makes me even happier than I already was to begin with. And I was already pretty flaming happy.\n\nI call my insurance company back, so that maybe they can get ahold of the Insurance Billing department and speak with someone to find out what in the world is happening with this claim.\n\nMy friendly insurance rep answered quickly, and I asked if there was a claim for this specific date of service in February. Shockingly, they show no record of a claim for that date of service. I stand amazed.\n\nI start telling my rep about my conversation with XYZ Supply Company, and how I was told that the people I need to talk to won’t talk to me because I’m a patient; my rep, who is annoyed on my behalf, graciously offers to call. I was afraid they had my phone number pre-routed to a recording.\n\nFinale, coming up tomorrow!",

No they did NOT just disconnect me after I’ve waited on hold for the majority of my lunch hour. AGAIN. Annoyed, but still trying to be patient, I call back. And I wait on hold. Again. And I head back to work, grabbing a sandwich on the way because I haven’t eaten yet even though my lunch hour is basically over, all while listening to the amazing hold music. Truly, it’s amazing. To the point that I want to stab my eardrums out so that I don’t have to listen to it. Sigh. I get back to work and am still oh hold. Finally after waiting about 30 minutes, I get a person! Yay!! Who then tells me that they don’t have the prescription. Well, my doctor’s office sent it in last week so…find it please. Oh wait there it is-they found it! So all the sudden it appeared after I told you that the doctor’s office told me that they had a fax confirmation? Again with the hinky. And I am assured that it will be submitted to my insurance company, post haste. The end is in sight! At last, 5 weeks after my order was filled and paid for, they have what they need and will submit a claim!! I’m very excited. I get my lunch hours back again! Or so I thought. I give it yet another week. I check the insurance website. No claim. And I have a mini breakdown-I mean seriously, what the hell is the problem?! This is your JOB. This is what you do all day every day. How in the hell an it be this difficult to press a button on whatever billing program that you use to submit my claim to my flaming insurance company?? I have used you before and never in my life had this much trouble just getting something sent in to the insurance company! < banging head on desk > I have finally had ENOUGH. I go to my HR person at work and ask if she has any connections with the insurance company or anyone who can help me out because I have been messing with this for 6 weeks and have gotten absolutely nowhere. Unless you count the rise in my blood pressure. I make contact with our insurance broker, who is the person I was given by HR. I love this woman. She is my favorite. I have nicknamed her THE HAMMER. I give THE HAMMER the rundown on everything that has happened since I placed my order. I point out that the only reason that I used XYZ Supply Company is that they are the preferred provider of my insurance company. I figured preferred provider meant knows their stuff and does it well. But apparently not in this case. THE HAMMER listens to my story and then I ask, am I being unreasonable? Because if I truly am then I can fix that. To which she replied, basically, hell no you’re not being unreasonable. This is stupid and has taken way too long to resolve. I was so relieved that someone who deals with this stuff on a daily basis was on my side. I felt so much better at this point. I had been talking to my friends, coworkers, and family about this since I started having trouble. They all told me the same thing, you are being too nice; you have to get forceful with them. I don’t like to do that; I prefer to start out being nice. Yaknow, more flies with honey and all that. (though what anyone would want with flies is beyond me). So I asked THE HAMMER, what should I do next? Something has to give, and I’m not getting anywhere. THE HAMMER is awesome. She has magic words, which she shared with me. Are you ready for this? They are powerful, but I will totally share them with you. I’m all about the sharing. The magic words are… INSURANCE FRAUD Gasp! Can’t you just hear the horror music in the background? DUN-DUN-DUUUUNNNNNNNNN!!!!! See, to me fraud is one of those BIG words that you don’t throw around. To me that ranks up there with talking about bombs in an airport. Not funny, even if you are joking. Not something you play around with, right? However, THE HAMMER explained to me that, since XYZ Supply Company is essentially refusing to file a claim with my insurance company, they are in fact committing INSURANCE FRAUD. I have insurance and I have it for a reason. This company is contracted with my insurance company to bill at a specific rate and then file an insurance claim. My mission; contact XYZ Supply Company’s billing office, again, and advise that if my issue is not resolved, TODAY, I will be contacting the Insurance Commissioner’s office and reporting them for INSURANCE FRAUD. Eek! Just saying those words to myself makes me a little twitchy. Fraud is something you hear about in gangster movies, or some crazy dude on Wall Street. Fraud isn’t something that happens to a small town girl, lonely world or not! I plot out what I plan to say, and psych myself up for being not nice. Now, my friends and family will tell you that typically I have no problem being not nice. One might say that I excel at it. I show my love with sarcasm. So it always surprises them to see me be nice to others. I find this amusing. But in my defense, they give as good as they get, so I figure we’re pretty even. Now, back to my planning my call. Am I the only one who does this? If I have to make a call and I need to make sure that I ask specific things or get specific information, I make an outline or a list. Always have. Same for leaving a message. For the longest time, if I had to leave a message; I would hang up, plan my message, and call back to leave it. Yes, I do know that I’m a great big dork-this is only a small thing on a long list of what makes me a great big dork. I’ve accepted it as my fate. I decide what all I need to say and have my list all ready. I’ve prepped myself to not take no for an answer and I’m ready to go! I call, fully prepared to wait on hold another 40 minutes, but by some miracle my call is answered in just a few minutes! I was pretty excited, but I refused to let it throw me off my game. I am here for answers, and by golly I’m getting them or heads will roll! I get a friendly rep on the phone, who asks how she can help. I go through my spiel, which by now I pretty much have memorized, and she says that she can see where a claim has been sent in to the insurance company. Imagine her surprise when I advise her that not only does my insurance company have no record of the claim, but that I have been assured on multiple occasions has indeed been submitted. And that I have been calling since the beginning of March without resolution, and I refuse to accept yet another person telling me something different than the last person that I spoke with. I did apologize to the rep for having to bear the brunt of my frustration, but I was done being nice about this situation and told her that in those words. I never raised my voice, I just explained that I was done being passed around. She said that my issue would be submitted to the insurance team for review, and that it would be resolved as soon as possible. And this is the point that I brought out the magic words. I told my friendly XYZ Supply Company billing representative that I wanted this issue resolved TODAY. She balked, I get it, they’re probably backed up. I’m sure they have a ton of things to review. Her answer was that reviewing billing issues could take a couple of weeks. To which I replied, “it’s been almost 2 months. This is either resolved today, or I get a call from someone on the team supposedly reviewing the issue no later than 5pm central time, or I will be contacting the Insurance Commissioner and reporting the company for INSURANCE FRAUD.” My friendly rep wasn’t happy about this turn of events. I wasn’t mean. I didn’t yell. I didn’t curse. I simply explained in no uncertain terms, using my “I’m done dealing with you” tone, that this was unacceptable and should have been resolved long ago. I will not take another answer that is meant to appease me just enough to get me off the phone so that I can wait and call again in a week as someone else’s problem. I don’t like being not nice. I can be not nice, but it’s not really my default (no matter what my friends or family say). After I told my friendly rep what I wanted and expected and got off the phone, I immediately felt bad. Bad enough that I called my sister and recounted the entire conversation and asked her if she thought I was too mean (she didn’t, she’s meaner than I am). Countdown to 5pm central time. Surely they can tell that I’m serious and over dealing with this, so they’ll at the very least call me and update me on the status of the ‘review’ of my issue (still not sure exactly what needed to be reviewed, I placed an order, and you file a claim. Seems pretty simple to me). Somewhere around 3pm I start thinking that they may really not call me. Maybe my magic words didn’t work and I’m going to have to actually report INSURANCE FRAUD (Yes, I do put that in all caps on purpose. I feel like it’s definitely an all caps worthy phrase). 5pm comes. 5pm goes. No call. Sigh. I decide that, because reporting INSURANCE FRAUD is a serious thing, I am going to talk to THE HAMMER one more time before I call the Insurance Commissioner. The next morning (Friday), I call her; only to find out that she is off for the weekend and will be back the following Monday. THE HAMMER’s officemate thought that, due to the history of this issue, it would be better to wait for her to be back on Monday as he didn’t have any background to go off of. Sounds like a plan; I set an alarm for Monday to make sure that I remember to call her on my lunch. …..More tomorrow! Stay tuned! |

And I head back to work, grabbing a sandwich on the way because I haven’t eaten yet even though my lunch hour is basically over, all while listening to the amazing hold music. Truly, it’s amazing. To the point that I want to stab my eardrums out so that I don’t have to listen to it. Sigh.\n\nI get back to work and am still oh hold. And I am assured that it will be submitted to my insurance company, post haste.\n\nThe end is in sight! At last, 5 weeks after my order was filled and paid for, they have what they need and will submit a claim!! I’m very excited. I get my lunch hours back again! Or so I thought.\n\nI give it yet another week. < banging head on desk >\n\nI have finally had ENOUGH. I have nicknamed her THE HAMMER.\n\nI give THE HAMMER the rundown on everything that has happened since I placed my order. I was so relieved that someone who deals with this stuff on a daily basis was on my side.\n\nI felt so much better at this point. I had been talking to my friends, coworkers, and family about this since I started having trouble. They all told me the same thing, you are being too nice; you have to get forceful with them. I don’t like to do that; I prefer to start out being nice. Yaknow, more flies with honey and all that. (though what anyone would want with flies is beyond me).\n\nSo I asked THE HAMMER, what should I do next? Something has to give, and I’m not getting anywhere. THE HAMMER is awesome. She has magic words, which she shared with me.\n\nAre you ready for this? They are powerful, but I will totally share them with you. I’m all about the sharing.\n\nThe magic words are…\n\nINSURANCE FRAUD\n\nGasp! Can’t you just hear the horror music in the background? DUN-DUN-DUUUUNNNNNNNNN!!!!!\n\nSee, to me fraud is one of those BIG words that you don’t throw around. To me that ranks up there with talking about bombs in an airport. Not funny, even if you are joking. Not something you play around with, right?\n\nHowever, THE HAMMER explained to me that, since XYZ Supply Company is essentially refusing to file a claim with my insurance company, they are in fact committing INSURANCE FRAUD. I have insurance and I have it for a reason. This company is contracted with my insurance company to bill at a specific rate and then file an insurance claim.\n\nMy mission; contact XYZ Supply Company’s billing office, again, and advise that if my issue is not resolved, TODAY, I will be contacting the Insurance Commissioner’s office and reporting them for INSURANCE FRAUD.\n\nEek! Just saying those words to myself makes me a little twitchy. Fraud is something you hear about in gangster movies, or some crazy dude on Wall Street. Fraud isn’t something that happens to a small town girl, lonely world or not!\n\nI plot out what I plan to say, and psych myself up for being not nice. Now, my friends and family will tell you that typically I have no problem being not nice. One might say that I excel at it. I show my love with sarcasm. So it always surprises them to see me be nice to others. I find this amusing. But in my defense, they give as good as they get, so I figure we’re pretty even.\n\nNow, back to my planning my call. I’ve accepted it as my fate.\n\nI decide what all I need to say and have my list all ready. I’ve prepped myself to not take no for an answer and I’m ready to go! I call, fully prepared to wait on hold another 40 minutes, but by some miracle my call is answered in just a few minutes! I was pretty excited, but I refused to let it throw me off my game. I am here for answers, and by golly I’m getting them or heads will roll!\n\nI get a friendly rep on the phone, who asks how she can help. I go through my spiel, which by now I pretty much have memorized, and she says that she can see where a claim has been sent in to the insurance company. Imagine her surprise when I advise her that not only does my insurance company have no record of the claim, but that I have been assured on multiple occasions has indeed been submitted. And that I have been calling since the beginning of March without resolution, and I refuse to accept yet another person telling me something different than the last person that I spoke with.\n\nI did apologize to the rep for having to bear the brunt of my frustration, but I was done being nice about this situation and told her that in those words. Her answer was that reviewing billing issues could take a couple of weeks.\n\nTo which I replied, “it’s been almost 2 months. This is either resolved today, or I get a call from someone on the team supposedly reviewing the issue no later than 5pm central time, or I will be contacting the Insurance Commissioner and reporting the company for INSURANCE FRAUD.”\n\nMy friendly rep wasn’t happy about this turn of events. I wasn’t mean. I didn’t yell. I didn’t curse. I simply explained in no uncertain terms, using my “I’m done dealing with you” tone, that this was unacceptable and should have been resolved long ago. I will not take another answer that is meant to appease me just enough to get me off the phone so that I can wait and call again in a week as someone else’s problem.\n\nI don’t like being not nice. I can be not nice, but it’s not really my default (no matter what my friends or family say). After I told my friendly rep what I wanted and expected and got off the phone, I immediately felt bad. Bad enough that I called my sister and recounted the entire conversation and asked her if she thought I was too mean (she didn’t, she’s meaner than I am).\n\nCountdown to 5pm central time. 5pm comes. 5pm goes. No call. Sigh.\n\nI decide that, because reporting INSURANCE FRAUD is a serious thing, I am going to talk to THE HAMMER one more time before I call the Insurance Commissioner. The next morning (Friday), I call her; only to find out that she is off for the weekend and will be back the following Monday. THE HAMMER’s officemate thought that, due to the history of this issue, it would be better to wait for her to be back on Monday as he didn’t have any background to go off of. Sounds like a plan; I set an alarm for Monday to make sure that I remember to call her on my lunch.\n\n…..More tomorrow! Stay tuned!",

| body | Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Mr. Big-my daughter's new lizard. Though she is quick to correct me when I call him a lizard, he's a Gecko. Which is a lizard. But I can't call him a lizard, that's not specific enough apparently. Not to mention that the only way to tell if it's a boy or girl is to squeeze and if something pops out, boy. If not, girl. At this point, I don't care enough to go squeezing looking for a tiny gecko penis. Not. Gonna. Happen. Sure is cute though...! |
