| title | The Farce of NBN’s Technology Choice Program |
| body | **“I think (sic) would work out at around $3,000. So it is not $5000.” — Malcolm Turnbull.** *24 July 2013, Sky News.* This was the line of opposition communications minister Malcolm Turnbull on the election trail in 2013 regarding the minimal (to him) cost to upgrade an individual premises to FTTP. Another bald faced lie in retrospect was the claim that the multi-technology mix NBN Tony Abbott (Prime Minister for a time), Malcolm Turnbull (PM for a time) and the Coalition party said would be completed by the end of 2016. But what I’d like to focus on today is the Technology Choice Program instituted by the Coalition government which is a program to enable an upgrade path to certain technologies in the MTM to FTTH. The Whirlpool Forums have been [documenting](https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/2673949) the processes and costs involved in partaking in the Technology Choice Program since 2017. They have an excellent Google Sheets spreadsheet (pictured above) that you can [view here](https://goo.gl/YfbdSv) which outlines the costs to upgrade to FTTH. As you can see in the document the costs involved in upgrading are anywhere from $5,500 to $35,000. For one person on Fixed Wireless who doesn’t use Whirlpool the [cost quoted was $218,000](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-10-23/technology-choice-how-much-for-nbn-fibre/9076738). The main technology most of the Whirlpoolers are upgrading from is FTTN. Most seem to have copped the bad end of the stick in regards to the speeds they attained as well as the reliability. By most accounts in the Whirlpool thread the customers of the TCP were happy with the speeds and latency they achieved once completing their upgrade. And these are people who seem happy enough for whatever reason to have coughed up the cash for full fibre. This doesn’t do much for the digital divide and makes for a haves and a have nots scenario where those with the most money can get an effectively exponentially better service with fibre to the home when those lucky enough to have been a part of the Labor rollout pre-2013 attained what we all should have got as a part of a nation building infrastructure project. The answer that Labor are rumoured to be brewing up is more Fibre to the Curb (or FTTC) going forward. And with NBN [soon to offer an upgrade path to FTTC](https://www.itnews.com.au/news/nbn-co-will-add-fttc-upgrade-options-to-technology-choice-500310) this could be a compromise. And presumably the upgrade path from FTTC to FTTH under the TCP would be a lot cheaper than FTTN or Fixed Wireless to FTTH In an excellent [piece for Independent Australia](https://independentaustralia.net/business/business-display/will-it-be-third-time-lucky-for-the-nbn,12369), telecommunications analyst Paul Budde wonders whether it will be third time lucky for the NBN if Labor can win the upcoming federal election. He argues that the NBN should be seen as a national good and not so focused on being a hardline business to be sold off to private industry. This would allow more of the original plan for fibre to be built back into the network. I’ve already written on “[The Tragedy of Australia’s NBN](https://medium.com/@ants000/the-tragedy-of-australias-nbn-7264be18ee4f)” and this was before I actually had the NBN. I wrote on how much of a lottery receiving FTTN was. And sure enough I was on the receiving end of less than stellar speeds. I receive just under 23 Mbps down and just over 5 Mbps up on a FTTN connection that has deteriorated over time. And I’ve only had it around 8 months. Meanwhile others I know receive 95 Mbps down and 40 Mbps up. One unlucky person I know on FTTN receives 12 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up on a stability profile (a setting to minimize issues) after NBN couldn’t fix their constant dropouts. I’ve considered using the Technology Choice Program to upgrade to FTTP in the past but my Retail Service Provider Aussie Broadband claims I’m 1200 metres from the node. So going on the Whirlpool calculations I could be up for anywhere from $20K to $35K. Not something I’ll readily admit to being able to afford. But all I can think of is the feeling I’ll have knowing my line can be upgraded to basically massive gigabit proportions whenever NBN decides to “change their mindset” as [Aussie Broadband CEO Phil Britt put it in a recent reddit IAMA](https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/7hu0ld/hi_im_phil_britt_the_managing_director_of_aussie/) and offer gigabit+ NBN. I await both parties’ telecommunications policies in the lead up to the federal election but going on past promises from the Coalition I don’t hold much faith in them. In fact I think the Coalition, Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull should be hauled before a Royal Commission into the catastrophic mismanagement of Australia’s telecommunications’ future. Say what you will about Kevin Rudd but he is [dead right](https://thenewdaily.com.au/news/national/2019/01/10/rupert-murdoch-nbn-kevin-rudd/) about the need for this. I don’t know why I punish myself but I just finished [watching a joint committee into the NBN](http://parlview.aph.gov.au/mediaPlayer.php?videoID=437193&operation_mode=parlview) that happened this past Monday. The Liberal representatives were very soft on NBN CEO Stephen Rue and Labor got stuck in over whether NBN Co would admit that they had fudged the numbers in relation to the cost to continue building Labor’s full FTTH NBN as opposed to restarting it after the Coalition’s wrecking ball of the MTM. As many of you might know under a politically motivated Coalition NBN Co estimated an all-fibre fixed-line rollout would need funding between $74 billion & $84bn compared to $46bn to $56bn for a MTM model. But Stephen Rue would not admit that this wouldn’t have been the case if the NBN had been continued under Labor’s full fibre model. I thought it interesting that the Nationals representative asked about the Technology Choice Program. He got a run of the mill response from the NBN staff. I just think these upgrades from copper based technologies are going to play a larger role in the NBN going forward. I foresee Labor (if they get into power) subsidizing or lowering the cost of the TCP and working with RSPs to improve the access of the program. Unfortunately the MTM is here and it’s gonna take a lot to unscramble the copper wiring egg. I’ll leave you with this. The first CEO of the NBN Mike Quigley in Senate Estimates in December of 2018. He lays out the absolute destruction of the NBN by the Coalition government. It gets pretty feisty for a Senate Estimates video and has been viewed nearly 6,000 times on YouTube. I get the feeling people are very angry about the NBN debacle. Vent your anger by watching the masterful truth telling on #fraudband by Mike Quigley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWFvcl_imHc Anthony Eales is a media, news & tech junkie from Australia. | body | Thanks for reading the article. Everything Sucks! and The Impression That I Get are just wonderful. Thanks for listening to some of my favourite songs of the year. Not too many new tunes. I tried voting in the triple J Hottest 100 but only recognised 7 songs. Must be getting old. Haha. I know you experience this too. Each to their own news site I suppose. As for The Age we'll see how they fare in 2019 under Nine. And no I'm not an XYZ man these days. Although I do read one particular columnist. Thought you'd enjoy my apps list. I only really include what I use the most and unfortunately for Firefox I just don't open it enough. Thanks man! |

| body | I got the impression that The Impression That I Get — which you got from a mighty impressive TV show that didn't suck — would have impressed you enough to get on your Most Impressive list of 2018. I got impressed by that mighty mighty track an impressive 20 years ago. Definitely a fan of some of the other tunes in your Spotify playlist too. Of your TV list, I can vouch for Everything Sucks. Also looking forward to new Black Mirror, and will one day get around to Silicon Valley. Couldn't find much to like from your fave YouTube channels and podcasts. Well, aside from LinusTech and MKBHD. Ars Technica piss all over The Verge, and VICE are nothing but clickbait these days. As for your news websites, TorrentFreak have a well deserved spot. Crikey also publish some decent material, but are sadly behind a paywall. It's suspicious to see The Age — which have become a shadow of their former selves — at #2, as I thought you were of the belief they had now jumped the shark. New Matilda, Independent Australia and Michael West may be reading this wondering who paid you off to exclude quality journalism from your list. Also looks like your love affair with Guardian Australia has come to an end, while The Intercept appear unlucky to miss out. Huge fan of many of your fave apps, with a special mention to Pocket Casts, Spotify, LastPass, Telegram, SABnzbd and Sonarr. Poor form excluding Firefox in favour of Chrome though. In summary, interesting reading! |

| title | My Favourite Things of 2018 |
| body | As we approach 2019 I think it’s only fair to look back at 2018 and in particular my favourite things of this last year. 🎞 **My favourite movies:** 1. **Bad Times at the El Royale** — my favourite movie experience this year. Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) directs a brilliant ensemble cast about a hotel that shares land on California and Nevada. 2. **Sorry To Bother You** — Boots Riley directs Lakeith Stanfield in a masterful take on modern capitalism, race and so much more. 3. **Ready Player One **— Steven Spielberg directs the adaptation of the book. I really was engrossed in this tale of pop culture mixed with VR. 4. **Hereditary** — a brilliant horror with an amazing performance by Toni Collette. 5. **Bohemian Rhapsody** — I loved this tale of Freddie Mercury and Queen. Rami Malek portrayed Freddie in a spot on way. Watch out for the Live Aid scene. 6. **A Quiet Place** — John Krasinski (The Office (US)) directs, writes and stars in this quasi sci-fi thriller with a brilliant concept. 7. **Searching** — John Cho stars in this thriller that takes place all on screens. You’ve gotta see it to appreciate it. 8. **BlacKkKlansman** — Spike Lee directs. A black cop infiltrates the KKK in an interesting way. Says a lot about our current climate. 9. **Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse** — a late addition to my list. Probably my favourite Spider-Man movie ever. And I loved Spider-Man: Homecoming. 10. **They Shall Not Grow Old** — Peter Jackson respectfully brings WWI to life with a colour restoration. I saw this in the cinemas and it hit me hard. **Honourable mentions:** **Sicario: Day of the Soldado** — I enjoyed this sequel to Sicario (2015) but missed Emily Blunt’s involvement. **First Man** — the story of the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong. It’s really about the man himself. It’s quite bleak. But an amazing real life story. **Swinging Safari** — hilarious Australian coming of age comedy set in the 70s. **Blockers** — another hilarious comedy that flips genders expectations in how teen sex romps usually go. **Red Sparrow** — Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton put on great performances in this Cold War era thriller. **Boy Erased **— to think these gay to straight conversion camps still go on in massive magnitude is criminal. Lukas Hedges with a great performance as usual. As well as Nicole Kidman. 📺 **My favourite TV:** 1. **Who is America? season 1** — hilarious from Sacha Baron Cohen. Never have I laughed so much. Too bad it’s not coming back for season 2. 2. **The Fourth Estate season 1** — in depth look into the reporting at The New York Times in the Trump era. 3. **Silicon Valley season 5** — I love Mike Judge’s HBO Silicon Valley send up. I hope it keeps getting renewed but fear it’s near the end. 4. **Atlanta season 2** — Donald Glover can do no wrong. 5. **Big Mouth season 2** — Netflix puberty cartoon that is hilarious. From Nick Kroll. 6. **Silicon Valley: The Untold Story season 1** — this was an excellent history of Silicon Valley from the 50s to now. 7. **Last Week Tonight with John Oliver season 5** — John Oliver wins all the awards for this show and he deserves to. 8. **South Park season 22** — #cancelsouthpark. No don’t do that. I’d be devastated. 9. **Everything Sucks! season 1** — already cancelled by Netflix coming of age 90s dramedy. Too bad. 10. **Rotten season 1** — a look at the deficiencies of our modern food and agriculture system. **Honourable mentions:** **Black Mirror: Bandersnatch** — just watched this so it’s fresh. An interactive choose-you-own adventure special/telemovie from Charlie Brooker (creator of Black Mirror) and Netflix. Love the 80s setting and soundtrack. They probably saw how popular San Junipero was and ran with it. **Gogglebox Australia season 8** — I didn’t watch every episode of Gogglebox but when I did I really enjoyed myself. 🎙 **My favourite podcasts:** 1. **[Business Wars ](https://wondery.com/shows/business-wars/)**— my favourite podcast ever I’d have to say. It pits two businesses against each other in a radio documentary style format usually taking 6 episodes and then an interview. 2. **[Cordkillers](http://www.cordkillers.com/)** — the show for cordcutters turned 5 this year. Tom Merritt and Brian Brushwood shepherd cord cutters (people cutting out traditional pay TV) into the brave new world of Netflix and the like. 3. **[This Week in Tech ](https://twit.tv/shows/this-week-in-tech)**— Leo Laporte and the TWiT network have been going for over 10 years and This Week in Tech is always a must listen. 4. **[MacBreak Weekly](https://twit.tv/shows/macbreak-weekly)** — another podcast from Leo Laporte and TWiT, this one focusing on all things Apple. 5. **[The /Film Cast](https://www.slashfilm.com/category/features/slashfilmcast/)** — the flagship podcast of Slashfilm.com, it usually starts with what the hosts (David Chen, Devindra Hardawar & Jeff Cannata) have been watching, some movie news and than a featured movie review. This is great to listen to on trips to the movies. ▶️ **My favourite YouTube channels:** 1. **[Wendover Productions](https://www.youtube.com/WendoverProductions)** — focuses on topics to do with flying, planes and logistics but does it masterfully. 2. **[ColdFusion](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4QZ_LsYcvcq7qOsOhpAX4A)**— focuses on tech video essays. 3. **[Kurzgesagt — in a Nutshell](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsXVk37bltHxD1rDPwtNM8Q)** — all things science and explaining it in an accessible (and animated) way. 4. **[Company Man](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQMyhrt92_8XM0KgZH6VnRg)** — focuses on different companies in video essay form. 5. **[The Verge](https://www.youtube.com/user/TheVerge)** — the flagship YouTube channel of The Verge. Tech, pop culture, gadget reviews and much more. 6. **[Linus Tech Tips](https://www.youtube.com/user/LinusTechTips)** — great channel that covers all topics of tech. 7. **[MKBHD](https://www.youtube.com/user/marquesbrownlee)** — Marques Brownlee is a massive YouTube celebrity now and has got there in a deserved way. Tech reviews and tech commentary. 8. **[Late Night with Seth Myers](https://www.youtube.com/user/LateNightSeth)** — I love the A Closer Look segment that is uploaded every day when the show is on. Always seems to find a way to make Donald Trump look stupid. 9. **[The Late Show with Stephen Colbert](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMtFAi84ehTSYSE9XoHefig)** — Colbert is a hilarious satirist and I prefer him this way than on The Colbert Report. 10. **[VICE](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn8zNIfYAQNdrFRrr8oibKw) **— for how crap the website often is VICE’s YouTube channel is surprisingly good. **Honourable mentions:** **[VICE News](https://www.youtube.com/user/vicenews)** — more serious VICE content. **[JRE Clips ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnxGkOGNMqQEUMvroOWps6Q)**— The Joe Rogan Experience clips channel is hand when you don’t have time to listen to 3 hour podcasts 3 times a week. **[The h3 Podcast Highlights](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZZHPXsg6LopvdOKF7qM6cQ)** — similar to JRE Clips, this channel saves me from having to listen to a lengthy podcast when I can just get the best bits. **[Netflix](https://www.youtube.com/user/NewOnNetflix)** — love the trailers and bonus content. **[Movieclips Trailers](https://www.youtube.com/user/movieclipsTRAILERS)** — a great movie trailer channel that won’t let you down. 📰 **My favourite news websites:** 1. **[The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/)** — my favourite tech news website. 2. **[The Age](https://www.theage.com.au/) **— my favourite Australian news website with a Victorian perspective. 3. **[Stratechery ](https://stratechery.com/)**— Ben Thompson is the brainchild behind Stratechery. He releases a free article a week about tech business models and has a paid product 3 times a week extra if you want more. The Exponent podcast (which is like a spinoff of Stratechery) is excellent too. 4. **[WIRED](https://www.wired.com/)** — excellent tech long reads. 5. **[Variety](https://variety.com/)** — comprehensive reporting on Hollywood and the film industry. 6. **[The Hollywood Reporter](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/)** — paired with Variety you get a great coverage of Hollywood. 7. **[/Film](https://www.slashfilm.com/)** — a great film blog that seems to be on the pulse of what film fans want to read. 8. **[9to5Mac](https://9to5mac.com/)** — the loss of reporter Mark Gurman to Bloomberg was a big one but they still report quite well on all things Apple. 9. **[TorrentFreak](https://torrentfreak.com/)** — file sharing news. 10. **[Crikey](https://www.crikey.com.au/)** — paywalled but excellent Australian news source focusing on politics and media. **Honourable mentions:** **[Recode](https://www.recode.net/) **— think this is getting folded into Vox next year but Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg’s (now retired) baby has been wonderful while its been active. Shout out to one of my favourite media commentators, Peter Kafka. **[The Information](https://www.theinformation.com/)** — paywalled but second to none tech coverage. **[MacRumors](https://www.macrumors.com/)** — an Apple rumours and news blog. **[The Courier ](https://www.thecourier.com.au/)**— Ballarat news. **[The Bendigo Advertiser](https://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au/)** — Bendigo news. 📱 **My favourite apps:** 1. **[Pocket Casts](https://www.pocketcasts.com/)** — a fine podcast app that is on every platform. It’s my number 1 because I use it so much. 2. **[YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/) **— this one is self explanatory. 3. **[Netflix](https://www.netflix.com/)** — love my Netflix. Wonder how it’s going to compete next year with Disney+ & Apple’s content offerings. 4. **[Plex](https://www.plex.tv/)** — control your own content. A media management and player. 5. **[Spotify](https://www.spotify.com/)** — Spotify is my favourite music streaming service due to the playlists. 6. **[Telegram](https://telegram.org/)** — advanced messaging app. 7. **[Facebook Messenger](https://www.messenger.com/)**— keep in touch with friends. 8. **[Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/)** — I still use Facebook. Mostly for the news. I set 25 sources to see first and it’s pretty good. I sometimes get stuck in a time vortex though. I miss all the news organisations using Instant Articles. 9. **Apple Music** — I pay for two music streaming services because I use Apple Music on my Apple TVs. 10. **[LastPass](https://www.lastpass.com/)** — must have password management app. **Honourable mentions:** **[Google Chrome](https://www.google.com/chrome/) **— my favourite Internet browser. **[Google Docs ](https://www.google.com/docs/about/)**— I use this so much. I use it to manage my subscriptions. And o much more. **[Gmail](https://mail.google.com/)** — my go to email website. **[Nuzzel](https://nuzzel.com/)** — it’s great for aggregating news articles if you follow a lot of people on Twitter. Even if you don’t the Popular section has plenty of articles. **[Twitter ](https://twitter.com/)**— I feel bad and get panic attacks using Twitter too much. But it’s required in these troubled times. **[Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/)** — mainly stick to my chosen subreddits. **[IMDb](https://www.imdb.com/)** — brilliant movie and TV database. **[Medium](https://medium.com/)** — I’ve been able to reach new heights with readers this year. And it’s a pleasure to write on. And I also subscribe to Medium Membership to read any article on Medium at my heart’s content. **[SABnzbd](https://sabnzbd.org/)**— NZB downloader. **[Sonarr](https://sonarr.tv/)** — Internet PVR. **[NZBHydra2 ](https://github.com/theotherp/nzbhydra2)**— NZB indexer super search. **[Tautulli ](https://tautulli.com/)**— Plex activity monitor. It’s great for seeing what everyone using your Plex server is watching. **[Radarr](https://radarr.video/)** — movie collector. **[NZB360 ](http://nzb360.com/)**— an amazing Android app for the Usenet enthusiast. **[Transmission](https://transmissionbt.com/)** — my preferred BitTorrent client on the Mac. **[Private Internet Access](https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/)** — excellent VPN app. The beta version of the app for Mac is wonderful. **[Tor](https://www.torproject.org/)** — anonymous Internet browsing. 💿 **My favourite music:** **Spotify Wrapped 2018 playlist link:** http://bit.ly/AntsFavSongs18 📕 **My favourite book:** **[The Big Picture: The Fight for the Future of Movies by Ben Fritz](https://www.amazon.com.au/Big-Picture-Fight-Future-Movies/dp/0544789768/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1546024412&sr=8-3&keywords=the+big+picture)** — a comprehensive look at the past, present & future of the movie business. I listened to the whole thing on Audible. All based off of the hacked Sony emails. If you have any questions about any of the movies, TV, podcasts, YouTube channels, news websites, apps or the book included comment. Have a happy new year! 🍾 |

"title": "My Favourite Things of 2018",
"body": "\n\nAs we approach 2019 I think it’s only fair to look back at 2018 and in particular my favourite things of this last year.\n\n🎞\n\n\n\n**My favourite movies:**\n\n1. **Bad Times at the El Royale** — my favourite movie experience this year. Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) directs a brilliant ensemble cast about a hotel that shares land on California and Nevada.\n\n2. **Sorry To Bother You** — Boots Riley directs Lakeith Stanfield in a masterful take on modern capitalism, race and so much more.\n\n3. **Ready Player One **— Steven Spielberg directs the adaptation of the book. I really was engrossed in this tale of pop culture mixed with VR.\n\n4. **Hereditary** — a brilliant horror with an amazing performance by Toni Collette.\n\n5. **Bohemian Rhapsody** — I loved this tale of Freddie Mercury and Queen. Rami Malek portrayed Freddie in a spot on way. Watch out for the Live Aid scene.\n\n6. **A Quiet Place** — John Krasinski (The Office (US)) directs, writes and stars in this quasi sci-fi thriller with a brilliant concept.\n\n7. **Searching** — John Cho stars in this thriller that takes place all on screens. You’ve gotta see it to appreciate it.\n\n8. **BlacKkKlansman** — Spike Lee directs. A black cop infiltrates the KKK in an interesting way. Says a lot about our current climate.\n\n9. **Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse** — a late addition to my list. Probably my favourite Spider-Man movie ever. And I loved Spider-Man: Homecoming.\n\n10. **They Shall Not Grow Old** — Peter Jackson respectfully brings WWI to life with a colour restoration. I saw this in the cinemas and it hit me hard.\n\n**Honourable mentions:**\n\n**Sicario: Day of the Soldado** — I enjoyed this sequel to Sicario (2015) but missed Emily Blunt’s involvement.\n\n**First Man** — the story of the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong. It’s really about the man himself. It’s quite bleak. But an amazing real life story.\n\n**Swinging Safari** — hilarious Australian coming of age comedy set in the 70s.\n\n**Blockers** — another hilarious comedy that flips genders expectations in how teen sex romps usually go.\n\n**Red Sparrow** — Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton put on great performances in this Cold War era thriller.\n\n**Boy Erased **— to think these gay to straight conversion camps still go on in massive magnitude is criminal. Lukas Hedges with a great performance as usual. As well as Nicole Kidman.\n\n📺\n\n**My favourite TV:**\n\n1. **Who is America? season 1** — hilarious from Sacha Baron Cohen. Never have I laughed so much. Too bad it’s not coming back for season 2.\n\n2. **The Fourth Estate season 1** — in depth look into the reporting at The New York Times in the Trump era.\n\n3. **Silicon Valley season 5** — I love Mike Judge’s HBO Silicon Valley send up. I hope it keeps getting renewed but fear it’s near the end.\n\n4. **Atlanta season 2** — Donald Glover can do no wrong.\n\n5. **Big Mouth season 2** — Netflix puberty cartoon that is hilarious. From Nick Kroll.\n\n6. **Silicon Valley: The Untold Story season 1** — this was an excellent history of Silicon Valley from the 50s to now.\n\n7. **Last Week Tonight with John Oliver season 5** — John Oliver wins all the awards for this show and he deserves to.\n\n8. **South Park season 22** — #cancelsouthpark. No don’t do that. I’d be devastated.\n\n9. **Everything Sucks! season 1** — already cancelled by Netflix coming of age 90s dramedy. Too bad.\n\n10. **Rotten season 1** — a look at the deficiencies of our modern food and agriculture system.\n\n**Honourable mentions:**\n\n**Black Mirror: Bandersnatch** — just watched this so it’s fresh. An interactive choose-you-own adventure special/telemovie from Charlie Brooker (creator of Black Mirror) and Netflix. Love the 80s setting and soundtrack. They probably saw how popular San Junipero was and ran with it.\n\n**Gogglebox Australia season 8** — I didn’t watch every episode of Gogglebox but when I did I really enjoyed myself.\n\n🎙\n\n**My favourite podcasts:**\n\n1. **[Business Wars ](https://wondery.com/shows/business-wars/)**— my favourite podcast ever I’d have to say. It pits two businesses against each other in a radio documentary style format usually taking 6 episodes and then an interview.\n\n2. **[Cordkillers](http://www.cordkillers.com/)** — the show for cordcutters turned 5 this year. Tom Merritt and Brian Brushwood shepherd cord cutters (people cutting out traditional pay TV) into the brave new world of Netflix and the like.\n\n3. **[This Week in Tech ](https://twit.tv/shows/this-week-in-tech)**— Leo Laporte and the TWiT network have been going for over 10 years and This Week in Tech is always a must listen.\n\n4. **[MacBreak Weekly](https://twit.tv/shows/macbreak-weekly)** — another podcast from Leo Laporte and TWiT, this one focusing on all things Apple.\n\n5. This is great to listen to on trips to the movies.\n\n▶️\n\n**My favourite YouTube channels:**\n\n1. **[Wendover Productions](https://www.youtube.com/WendoverProductions)** — focuses on topics to do with flying, planes and logistics but does it masterfully.\n\n2. **[ColdFusion](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4QZ_LsYcvcq7qOsOhpAX4A)**— focuses on tech video essays.\n\n3. **[Kurzgesagt — in a Nutshell](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsXVk37bltHxD1rDPwtNM8Q)** — all things science and explaining it in an accessible (and animated) way.\n\n4. **[Company Man](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQMyhrt92_8XM0KgZH6VnRg)** — focuses on different companies in video essay form.\n\n5. **[The Verge](https://www.youtube.com/user/TheVerge)** — the flagship YouTube channel of The Verge. Tech, pop culture, gadget reviews and much more.\n\n6. **[Linus Tech Tips](https://www.youtube.com/user/LinusTechTips)** — great channel that covers all topics of tech.\n\n7. **[MKBHD](https://www.youtube.com/user/marquesbrownlee)** — Marques Brownlee is a massive YouTube celebrity now and has got there in a deserved way. Tech reviews and tech commentary.\n\n8. **[Late Night with Seth Myers](https://www.youtube.com/user/LateNightSeth)** — I love the A Closer Look segment that is uploaded every day when the show is on. Always seems to find a way to make Donald Trump look stupid.\n\n9. **[The Late Show with Stephen Colbert](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMtFAi84ehTSYSE9XoHefig)** — Colbert is a hilarious satirist and I prefer him this way than on The Colbert Report.\n\n10. **[VICE](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn8zNIfYAQNdrFRrr8oibKw) **— for how crap the website often is VICE’s YouTube channel is surprisingly good.\n\n**Honourable mentions:**\n\n**[VICE News](https://www.youtube.com/user/vicenews)** — more serious VICE content.\n\n**[JRE Clips ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnxGkOGNMqQEUMvroOWps6Q)**— The Joe Rogan Experience clips channel is hand when you don’t have time to listen to 3 hour podcasts 3 times a week.\n\n**[The h3 Podcast Highlights](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZZHPXsg6LopvdOKF7qM6cQ)** — similar to JRE Clips, this channel saves me from having to listen to a lengthy podcast when I can just get the best bits.\n\n**[Netflix](https://www.youtube.com/user/NewOnNetflix)** — love the trailers and bonus content.\n\n**[Movieclips Trailers](https://www.youtube.com/user/movieclipsTRAILERS)** — a great movie trailer channel that won’t let you down.\n\n📰\n\n**My favourite news websites:**\n\n1. **[The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/)** — my favourite tech news website.\n\n2. **[The Age](https://www.theage.com.au/) **— my favourite Australian news website with a Victorian perspective.\n\n3. **[Stratechery ](https://stratechery.com/)**— Ben Thompson is the brainchild behind Stratechery. He releases a free article a week about tech business models and has a paid product 3 times a week extra if you want more. The Exponent podcast (which is like a spinoff of Stratechery) is excellent too.\n\n4. **[WIRED](https://www.wired.com/)** — excellent tech long reads.\n\n5. **[Variety](https://variety.com/)** — comprehensive reporting on Hollywood and the film industry.\n\n6. **[The Hollywood Reporter](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/)** — paired with Variety you get a great coverage of Hollywood.\n\n7. **[/Film](https://www.slashfilm.com/)** — a great film blog that seems to be on the pulse of what film fans want to read.\n\n8. **[9to5Mac](https://9to5mac.com/)** — the loss of reporter Mark Gurman to Bloomberg was a big one but they still report quite well on all things Apple.\n\n9. **[TorrentFreak](https://torrentfreak.com/)** — file sharing news.\n\n10. **[Crikey](https://www.crikey.com.au/)** — paywalled but excellent Australian news source focusing on politics and media.\n\n**Honourable mentions:**\n\n**[Recode](https://www.recode.net/) **— think this is getting folded into Vox next year but Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg’s (now retired) baby has been wonderful while its been active. Shout out to one of my favourite media commentators, Peter Kafka.\n\n**[The Information](https://www.theinformation.com/)** — paywalled but second to none tech coverage.\n\n**[MacRumors](https://www.macrumors.com/)** — an Apple rumours and news blog.\n\n**[The Courier ](https://www.thecourier.com.au/)**— Ballarat news.\n\n**[The Bendigo Advertiser](https://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au/)** — Bendigo news.\n\n📱\n\n**My favourite apps:**\n\n1. **[Pocket Casts](https://www.pocketcasts.com/)** — a fine podcast app that is on every platform. It’s my number 1 because I use it so much.\n\n2. **[YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/) **— this one is self explanatory.\n\n3. **[Netflix](https://www.netflix.com/)** — love my Netflix. Wonder how it’s going to compete next year with Disney+ & Apple’s content offerings.\n\n4. **[Plex](https://www.plex.tv/)** — control your own content. A media management and player.\n\n5. **[Spotify](https://www.spotify.com/)** — Spotify is my favourite music streaming service due to the playlists.\n\n6. **[Telegram](https://telegram.org/)** — advanced messaging app.\n\n7. **[Facebook Messenger](https://www.messenger.com/)**— keep in touch with friends.\n\n8. **[Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/)** — I still use Facebook. Mostly for the news. I set 25 sources to see first and it’s pretty good. I sometimes get stuck in a time vortex though. I miss all the news organisations using Instant Articles.\n\n9. **Apple Music** — I pay for two music streaming services because I use Apple Music on my Apple TVs.\n\n10. **[LastPass](https://www.lastpass.com/)** — must have password management app.\n\n**Honourable mentions:**\n\n**[Google Chrome](https://www.google.com/chrome/) **— my favourite Internet browser.\n\n**[Google Docs ](https://www.google.com/docs/about/)**— I use this so much. I use it to manage my subscriptions. And o much more.\n\n**[Gmail](https://mail.google.com/)** — my go to email website.\n\n**[Nuzzel](https://nuzzel.com/)** — it’s great for aggregating news articles if you follow a lot of people on Twitter. Even if you don’t the Popular section has plenty of articles.\n\n**[Twitter ](https://twitter.com/)**— I feel bad and get panic attacks using Twitter too much. But it’s required in these troubled times.\n\n**[Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/)** — mainly stick to my chosen subreddits.\n\n**[IMDb](https://www.imdb.com/)** — brilliant movie and TV database.\n\n**[Medium](https://medium.com/)** — I’ve been able to reach new heights with readers this year.
