By the time we’ve finished, would-be crypto investors should at least know what to look out for.&nbsp;</strong></p> <p><br></p> <h2>&nbsp;<strong>What makes a good cryptocurrency?</strong></h2> <p>https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQbsWTmqzDionwmPYez8Pyw7NfMf4VTvXMQFf2cNGvmHv/image.png<br> This is a tricky question to answer for two reasons. First, nobody can predict the future, so even the most encouraging looking cryptocurrency might end up failing. Second, what makes a cryptocurrency good depends on what you want to do with it.</p> <p>If you are looking to invest in a currency, then you will want a coin that will hold – and increase – its value. On the other hand, if you want to use the cryptocurrency, then you will need one that is widely accepted, or is at least accepted by the retailers you want to use.</p> <p>That usability is an important factor. The more uses a currency has, the wider its potential base of users, and the wider its user base, the greater demand. Demand, as in all economics, is crucial for driving price.&nbsp;</p> <p><br></p> <p>&nbsp;You will also want to look for a currency that is easy to acquire, whether through mining or buying. For some established currencies, mining is now restricted to those with access to expensive equipment, but buying them is still straightforward. For other, newer, cryptocurrencies, mining is easy but there are fewer in circulation for buyers.</p> <p>It is important to investigate the community around a cryptocurrency as well. The code that underlies cryptocurrencies sometimes needs to be updated to take account of new developments and close gaps in security. The larger and more active the community, the more likely it is that these changes will be dealt with promptly and effectively.</p> <p>The size of the community will also affect how widely it is supported by vendors and how easy it will be to find information and get help if you need it.</p> <p>You need to look for a combination of all these things to help determine a good cryptocurrency. It’s worth considering the example of investors who advocate a ‘portfolio’ approach, which means spreading your risk by investing in different assets, with a mix of risk profiles. For cryptocurrency investors, a portfolio makes sense. Other users might want to consider a portfolio approach in the sense of adopting different currencies for diverse needs.&nbsp;</p> <p><br></p> <p>&nbsp;<strong>Are cryptocurrencies the future?</strong><br> There are plenty of people who believe that cryptocurrencies are the future and will replace traditional currencies, shifting power away from central banks and governments. If this is the future it’s still some way away, with no cryptocurrency having established itself as a clear favourite even among those who are experts in the field. Also regulators are taking a very cautious approach to determining how cryptocurrencies can be used.The decentralised nature of the internet is one of its strengths.&nbsp;</p> <p>The network was designed so that the removal of one, or even several, nodes would not cripple the remainder. Cryptocurrency is designed to work in a comparable way. As the financial crash of 2008 revealed, significant financial disruption in one country, for example, the United States, can have a knock-on effect that harms economies around the world. As a decentralised, peer-to-peer tool, cryptocurrencies are intended to avoid that.</p> <p>However, their ability to do so in practice is debatable. The volatility of Bitcoin prices and allegations that the price increases were the result of market manipulation show that without a central bank in charge, catastrophic events can still affect the entire network.</p> <p>Even so, there is little doubt that a technological currency is a natural fit for the modern world. Most of our money exists virtually in any case, so the idea that a virtual currency could replace traditional money and allow us to spend the same currency anywhere in the world, doesn’t seem that far-fetched.</p> <p>Cryptocurrencies are also always-on, so that trading doesn’t cease when, for example, Wall Street closes for the night. This, too, seems like a more natural fit for our internet-enabled world.</p> <p>If cryptocurrencies are the future then it is possible that we have not yet seen the winner. Indeed, one possible scenario is that governments will simply launch their own cryptocurrencies and convert their citizens to those. Certain countries might choose to get together and share currencies, while others might settle for making it easy to trade between currencies. It’s possible that it won’t be governments that do this but retailers. We could see an Amazon Coin or an Apple Coin that becomes a currency used by customers of those businesses.</p> <p>There will be obstacles, however. Scientists have warned that the power demands of blockchain-based technology are unsustainable, so an alternative verification method might be needed if cryptocurrencies are to become truly global. Secondly, we’ve seen recently that networks can be compromised by attackers gaining control of more than 50 per cent of the network – something that was once thought unlikely. A currency with this kind of vulnerability clearly poses greater risks than traditional currencies, so this is a hole that will need to be closed before mass adoption is possible.</p> <p>Finally, cryptocurrencies are still not trusted by many technology experts, so getting them beyond the tech world and persuading the average person to use them in place of traditional currency is clearly a long way from happening. The researchers developed a technique, using platinum nanoparticles, to lower the impedance of graphene electrodes by 100 times while keeping them transparent. In tests on transgenic mice, the electrodes were able to record and image neuronal activity (calcium ion spikes) at of large groups of neurons and individual brain cells.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p>Graphene electrodes could enable higher quality imaging of brain cell activity thanks to new research by a team of engineers and neuroscientists at the University of California San Diego.</p> <p>The researchers developed a technique, using platinum nanoparticles, to lower the impedance of graphene electrodes by 100 times while keeping them transparent. In tests on transgenic mice, the low-impedance graphene electrodes were able to record and image neuronal activity, such as calcium ion spikes, at both the macroscale and single cell levels. The advance brings graphene electrodes a step closer to being adapted into next-generation brain imaging technologies and various basic neuroscience and medical applications.</p> <p>Over the past five years, researchers have been exploring graphene electrodes for use in neural implants that can be placed directly on the surface of the brain to record neuronal activity. They have several advantages over the traditional metal electrodes used in today's neural implants. They are thinner and flexible, so they can conform better to brain tissue. They are also transparent, which makes it possible to both record and see the activity of neurons directly beneath the electrodes that would otherwise be blocked by opaque metal materials.</p> <p>However, graphene electrodes suffer from high impedance, which means electrical current has difficulty flowing through the material. This hinders communication between the brain and recording devices. Readings are noisy as a result. And while there are various techniques to reduce the impedance of graphene, they ruin the material's transparency.</p> <p>In a new study, an interdisciplinary team of researchers at UC San Diego has developed a technique to engineer graphene electrodes that are both transparent and 100 times lower in impedance. Duygu Kuzum, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering, led the work. Her team developed the low-impedance, transparent graphene electrode arrays. They collaborated with Takaki Komiyama, a professor of neurobiology and neurosciences at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and Division of Biological Sciences, whose team performed brain imaging studies with these electrodes in transgenic mice. The work was published recently in Advanced Functional Materials.</p> <p>'This technique is the first to overcome graphene's electrochemical impedance problem without sacrificing its transparency,' said Kuzum. 'By lowering impedance, we can shrink electrode dimensions down to single cell size and record neural activity with single cell resolution.'</p> <p><br></p> <h3>Lowering impedance</h3> <p>Another important aspect of this work is that it is the first to uncover the root of graphene's high impedance -- a fundamental property called quantum capacitance. It is essentially a limit on how many 'open seats' graphene has to store electrons. And with a limited number of seats dispersed throughout the material, electrons have fewer paths to travel through.</p> <p>Finding a workaround to this limit was key to lowering impedance. Kuzum's team found that by depositing platinum nanoparticles onto graphene's surface, they created an alternate set of paths to channel electron flow.</p> <p><br></p> <p>'We chose platinum because it is a well-established electrode material. It has been used for decades due its low impedance and biocompatibility. And it can be easily deposited onto graphene at low cost,' said first author Yichen Lu, an electrical engineering Ph.D. student in Kuzum's lab at UC San Diego.</p> <p>Researchers also determined an amount of platinum nanoparticles that was just enough to lower impedance while keeping transparency high. With their method, the electrodes retained about 70 percent of their original transparency, which Kuzum notes is still good enough to get high quality readings using optical imaging.</p> <p><br></p> <h3>Recording brain cell activity in mice</h3> <p>Kuzum's team collaborated with neuroscientists in Komiyama's lab to test their electrodes in transgenic mice. Researchers placed an electrode array on the surface of the cortex. They were able to simultaneously record and image calcium ion activity in the brain.</p> <p>In their experiments, they recorded the total brain activity from the surface of the cortex. At the same time, researchers used a two-photon microscope to shine laser light through the electrodes and were able to directly image the activity of individual brain cells at 50 and 250 micrometers below the brain surface. By obtaining both recording and imaging data at the same time, researchers were able to identify which brain cells were responsible for the total brain activity.</p> <p>'This new technology makes it possible to combine macroscale recordings of brain activity, like EEG, with microscopic cellular imaging techniques that can resolve detailed activity of individual brain cells,' said Komiyama.</p> <p>'This work opens up new opportunities to use optical imaging to detect which neurons are the source of the activity that we are measuring. This has not been possible with previous electrodes. Now we have a new technology that enables us to record and image the brain in ways we could not before,' said Kuzum.</p> <p>The team's next steps include making the electrodes smaller and incorporating them into high density electrode arrays.</p> </html>",
