We've booked the likes of Dave Clarke, Mateo, Boris Brejcha, HOBO, Ame, Octave One and the list goes on. I got some artists down here that would do VERY well on that line up :) |

| body | Upon entering the BottleRock grounds, we eased our way through the main gates and into the festival at the Napa Valley Expo. The Miner Family Winery Stage was on the left. To our right a massive sign constructed of letters big enough to climb on declaring LOVE. To the right of the love sculpture was the Samsung Stage. Past the Samsung stage was the Williams Sonoma Culinary Stage. Further onward awaited the JaM Cellars Stage. Near to the beautifully laid out food court sat the Lagunitas Stage. Our introduction to Friday’s day one festivities took place at the playful and entertaining Williams Sonoma Culinary Stage. We stopped there and found Ayesha Curry in the kitchen cooking with Vallejo rapper E-40. The combination of celebrity chefs and musicians would entertain many throughout the weekend. Ayesha was warm and fun while E-40 assisted her and entertained the crowd. However, the biggest reaction from the culinary crowd occurred when Ayesha announced that she had brought someone with her…Ayesha’s husband, Golden State Warrior great, Steph Curry, joined her on stage. The crowd erupted and began shouting “MVP!” “MVP!” Steph and Ayesha embraced warmly as he greeted the crowd and Ayesha playfully complained that the audience had not been that loud for her! Later that afternoon, at the same venue, we would witness the surreal pairing of Martha Stewart with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, as Martha nonchalantly asked Lewis if he smoked? Only at BottleRock! http://bammagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Troubadour-77-400x266.jpg Kicking off the weekend was Troubadour 77 with their noon set on Friday. They are comprised of two married couples, Kassie and Austin Wayand and Nathan Chappell (drummer). Grammy award-winning singer-songwriters, Monty Powell and his wife Anna Wilson started the band specifically wanting to cater to the likes of the middle aged music lovers. their music sounds like a combination of Indigo Girls meets the Eagles. Anna comes from Pennsylvania and Monty from Atlanta. Monty has collaborated with Keith Urban and the couples reside in Utah. I asked where the name Troubadour 77 originates from and Anna told me that it comes from where live music got its mojo…the famous venue in LA, the Troubadour…and 77 was a very rich year for music. http://bammagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Fitz-and-the-tantrums-205x300.jpg Then onto the ’80s inspired pop filled set of Fitz and the Tantrums. Singer Michael Fitzpatrick, dressed in a white denim jacket, complete with ’80s style pins, white pants and red shoes. He and co-lead singer Noelle Scaggs, in a dark green jumpsuit, treated fans to an energetic set of sing-alongs including Break the Walls, Get Right Back, and Run It, among others. http://bammagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Catfish-and-the-Bottlemen-225x300.jpg We next enjoyed a set at the Samsung stage by British rockers Catfish and the Bottlemen. The guitar driven rock band proceeded to lay out a fantastic set of hard driving instantly catchy songs, reminiscent of an Arctic Monkeys style sound. Already with a loyal following in the U.K., the band will look to build momentum in the U.S. joining Green Day for tour dates this summer. Hungry for lunch we headed to the sprawling food court. Here choices ranged from corn dogs and tacos to duck confit and lobster, to everything imaginable in between. With drink options ranging from numerous local wines and beers to satisfy any palate or food pairing, complete with filling water bottle at one of the festivals convenient water stations. http://bammagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Cal-Honeydrops-400x214.jpg The California Honey Drops filled the stage with their many members, including three horns, conga drums, and keys. As soon as they started their set it was impossible not to move to the music. While swaying in Napa one suddenly found themselves transported to a dance party in the heart of New Orleans. A short time later we re-entered Napa, over at the Samsung Stage, amidst a formidable crowd gathered for The Silversun Pickups. The indie rockers from L.A. took the stage and immediately treated the venue to their signature sound of distorted guitars and the almost delicate, yet penetrating, voice of lead singer Brian Aubert. As their unique sound filled the air the band seemed to enjoy their time on stage as much as their fans. Bass player Nikki Monninger jumped up and down and smiled often during their set. Panic Switch and “Dots and Dashes” were among the fan favorites. Next was the headliner of the day, Maroon 5. As “whistle while you work” was played from the speakers the lighting changed and Maroon 5 took the stage. Facing his drummer lead singer Adam Levine stretched his arms high above his head with his fingers interlaced. At the first beat of the drum he dropped his left arm, striking a familiar disco pose, as the band broke into Moves Like Jagger. Maroon 5 continued their night with This Love, Animals, and Payphone among many more of their radio friendly hits. Levine, decked out in a black leather jacket , owned the crowd for the next nearly two hours, ending fifteen minutes before the 10pm cutoff. http://bammagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Maroon-5-2-257x300.jpg Day two started with City of the Sun. The New York based trio is made up of two guitar players and a percussionist. Their instrumental songs seemed to bend space and time. The trio seem to harken back to another time and place, or perhaps forward to a time and place that has yet to be? The acoustic guitars were ethereal as players John Pita and Avi Snow blended together for a nearly transformative musical experience. Their haunting sound has still not left my consciousness. A bit later, the wonderful Americana trio, Devil Makes Three, returned me happily to earth. The country, bluegrass, and jazz inspired band from Santa Cruz got the crowd moving and took us all for a fun filled old-timey musical romp. As their music drifted through the air people tapped their feet and kicked their legs into the ground. We then took a short walk to enjoy Mavis Staples. The soul and gospel singer who performed for President Obama in 2013 and received a Kennedy Center honor in 2016, was escorted to the stage, causing some to wonder aloud if she was still getting around all right at 77. As the band fired up and Mavis took the mic, it was clear she was getting around just fine! Her band played loud and fast and Mavis sang strong and vibrant. All in attendance were thrilled to be in the legend’s company, if only for a little while. Day 2 also brought the ever positive Michael Franti performing his blend of energetic and upbeat songs including The Sound Of Sunshine. Earlier in the day I interviewed Franti asking him if he would please consider running for president. With the idea that his positivity is the antidote for the present political climate. Next over to The Barr Brothers, offering melodic and peaceful music, while providing the only harp I was to hear at the festival. By contrast ’90s group House Of Pain played an aggressive set in the warm sun, finally culminating in their fan favorite Jump Around. http://bammagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Ben-Harper-260x400.jpg On the main stage, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals played a mellow selection of songs including Diamonds on the Inside and Burn one Down. This afternoon would also provide my favorite new find of the weekend. Los Angeles based rockers, The Shelters, performed on the Lagunitas Stage and proceeded to turn myself, and by looking around the venue many others, into instant fans. Their version of throwback inspired guitar driven songs proved to be a breath of fresh and familiar rock & roll air. Led by duel singers and guitar players, Chase Simpson and Josh Jove, The Shelters delivered the goods! Some of their music evoked the Beatles, like their song Fortune Teller, while other songs like Liar, were more reminiscent of ’90s grunge. I will be enjoying The Shelters again! A little background on this great band, is they were produced by Tom Petty and some of their gear belongs to him. Night two ended with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers taking the main stage. While Petty played many of his hits, one great song after the other. There were too many momentum killing breaks between each song, with the stage fading to black until the band fired up again. While it was a pleasure to hear the varied and storied catalog of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, a band with such history and talent, I wish the set had a better flow. Day three began for us with an energy filled set of old school punk from the Oakland based band SWMRS. The youthful band, led by lead singer Cole Becker, and his brother, with none other than Green Day’s, Billie Joe Armstrong’s son, Joey Armstrong on drums! Cole had the energy reminiscent of Iggy Pop and a sound possibly influenced by the likes of the Sex Pistols and The Ramones. SWMRS tore into several original punk songs, interacted with the audience, and were boundless in their energy and determination to inspire the large crowd gathered to see them. Gavin DeGraw treated his audience to a polished performance of his catchy songs. The piano player, wearing a signature hat, opened with his hit song Chariot and included other sing-alongs as Sweeter and In Love With A Girl. Recently reunited ’90s rockers Live performed a fan favorite set including Lightning Crashes, All Over You, and Selling The Drama. The venerable rock act also paid a fitting tribute to Chris Cornell, performing his beautiful song I am the Highway. It was a touching moment for many in the crowd who sung along with Ed Kowalczyk to Cornell’s soul-baring lyrics. http://bammagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/CB4-199x300.jpg Zeik McCarter of San Francisco funk band Con Brio said that people could expect an “explosive” performance from them at BottleRock. As promised, Zeik and Con Brio were electric. McCarter is one of the most dynamic performers in music today, making Con Brio a must see live show for music lovers. Fans will be pleased to hear that McCarter also said the band was working on some new stuff. Ending the set by tearing his shirt off and delighting the females in the audience! http://bammagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Band-of-horses-400x320.jpg Then, Band Of Horses played on the main stage before festival closers, Foo Fighters. The indie rockers treated their audience to a one hour set including songs Is There a Ghost, Weed Party, and The Funeral. The crowd began to swell behind us as Band Of Horses finished their set. The headliners, The Foo Fighters took the stage at just a little after 8pm to a roaring crowd. Lead singer Dave Grohl bounced back and forth across the stage, acknowledging the crowd while strumming his guitar. He settled in at his mic, gave a few primal rock screams, and announced that after a two year break from performing, it was on! The band burst into All My Life while the crowd screamed and sang along. Grohl interacted and joked with the crowd throughout the night. Several times he mentioned the Fighter’s two year hiatus and how glad he was to be back on stage, even informing the audience that he had the best job in the world. Grohl also suggested that the band, uneasy with time off, may have made a new album during the last two years? As the band kept the songs coming one after another, the crowd cheered and sang along with Learn To Fly, Monkey Wrench, and Best Of You, among so many others. http://bammagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Foo-238x300.jpg Before finishing the rolicking, loud, and hyper-energetic set, Grohl asked the crowd to sing happy birthday to his wife, Jordan. The Foo Fighters then capped off the night by getting unplugged at the 10pm curfew mid Everlong. As Grohl sang “The only thing I’ll ever ask of you, you’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when…” the sound went quiet. However, just as promised in the song, the crowd did not stop at “when” and instead finished the song in unison with the band, and in doing so, gave BottleRock ’17 a perfect ending. "body": "Upon entering the BottleRock grounds, we eased our way through the main gates and into the festival at the Napa Valley Expo. Near to the beautifully laid out food court sat the Lagunitas Stage.\n\nOur introduction to Friday’s day one festivities took place at the playful and entertaining Williams Sonoma Culinary Stage. Only at BottleRock!\nhttp://bammagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Troubadour-77-400x266.jpg\nKicking off the weekend was Troubadour 77 with their noon set on Friday. \nhttp://bammagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Fitz-and-the-tantrums-205x300.jpg\nThen onto the ’80s inspired pop filled set of Fitz and the Tantrums. | title | Remembering M. Dung - He Certainly Made a Mark! |
| body | In the late 1980's and early 1990's KFOG-FM in San Francisco had a disc jockey known as M. Dung, (Mike Slavko on his birth certificate.) M. passed away peacefully on June 30, 2017 at UCSF Medical Center in the City after a long illness, according to his girlfriend Judy Crum. "Dung Boy," as many of us called him was just as much a unique radio personality as "Wolfman Jack" was in his heyday during the 1960's over the Mexican radio station XERB-AM! The self-effacing M. Dung called his radio show, "The Sunday Night Idiot Show" for a reason. He played all the right music for us idiots in the audience and I guess judging by Dung's success, there were a lot of us out there in radio land to give him some respectable ratings. Dung didn't treat his listeners like idiots however and he scored the #1 18-34 ratings in all the nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area during a very nice stretch of his run at KFOG. http://justinbozung.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/526601_10200535405005996_2020636050_n.jpg DAVE LOGAN, original KFOG Program Director: Dung was like no other personality that ever poured out of your radio. Once the microphone was on, he rocketed from your speakers like a force of nature. In a world of radio clones, he was a complete original, loved by listeners and rock stars alike. Off-air, he was Mike Slavko, a shy guy with a theatrical flair who was a walking encyclopedia of musical knowledge. He was just out of college when we first met in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I’d heard his “show” on WSRX, the outlaw campus radio station of Grand Valley State College and suffice to say, it was like something from another planet; part radio show and part live theater that sounded as though it was fueled by too much beer, too little sleep and held together by the thinnest thread of reality. Mike also wrote radio plays and performed in absurdist bands including Guys With Big Teeth who were known for their song “Cut Your Stupid Eye Out.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQB4ef0Nr6o We first worked together at WLAV-FM, a powerhouse rock station in the market. As an experiment, I put M. on-air to host “The All Night Idiot Show” from 12 midnight Sunday to 6am Monday morning. Despite the lunar time slot, audience reaction was instantaneous and rabid. In short order, we moved him to a better time period where he created "The Sunday Night Idiot Show", a free-form mixture of roots rock, immaculate soul, excellent oldies, and eclectic ear candy. Inside the program itself, M. ranted and howled at the moon in harmony with hand-picked music that definitely moved. Listener requests were a big part of the program and the audience bombarded the phone lines to join Dung’s chaotic madness. This unique host/listener interaction became a spontaneous theater-of-the-mind performance. He had his own language that the audience joyfully mimicked and echoed. The request line was “The Funline.” You had to “feel it” to be part of the show and give Dung “some!” If you lacked the appropriate energy to join the fracas, you were “eye” and went “a-way!” The totality of this mix exploded from the radio with a funky groove and furious intensity driven by M.’s amplified personality and colorful verbal scat. Two years later, I left Grand Rapids and moved to San Francisco to launch KFOG. Shortly thereafter, I asked M. to join the team to help design our audio imaging alongside Dave Morey, a gifted broadcaster who went on to become one of San Francisco’s most beloved radio personalities. I’d worked with both guys separately in Grand Rapids and together, they created an audio identity that creatively separated KFOG from every other station in the market and set a standard for rock stations across the country. KFOG was also known for producing a number of specialty shows and when we finally unleashed "The Sunday Night Idiot Show" on the Bay Area, the impact was swift and powerful. Within a year, the show managed to become the #1 rated program on Sunday night for a period of time. Dung was on his way to infamy. About a year later, we made M. our morning host and he quickly became a big success. The zaniness that powered his Sunday show morphed into a very entertaining ensemble act with M. as ringleader, Scoop Nisker providing news headlines and commentary and Kevin Radich with his intelligent everyman take on sports. And, of course, the audience was a big part too. The trio took off and won key audience demos in the hyper-competitive morning show wars. As the show grew, so too did Dung’s fan base. Bay Area rock royalty started “feeling it.” Artists like John Fogerty, Mickey Hart, Paul Kantner and many more would phone the show and stop by to share their music. Brian Setzer marveled at M.’s incredible rockabilly collection during his visit to KFOG. Pete Townshend delighted in learning the proper way to say “You Eye!” while M. interviewed him during a remote broadcast in New York City. Everybody loved being an Idiot. Yet beneath his larger than life M. Dung radio persona, he was still Mike Slavko… a fanboy at heart and someone who truly loved radio. To him, there was nothing better than being behind a microphone with his music and becoming totally engaged with his audience, entertaining them wherever they may be. We all loved M. for who he was on the radio and how he made us feel. No one who heard his show will ever forget him. That will be the case for a long time to come. WES "SCOOP" NISKER: I’ll never forget that voice in my headphones every day of the week at 6AM — "YEEEOOOW BABY!” His love for the music was irrepressible, and it came out of him with quirky bursts of energy and sounds. I can see him pointing back at his own face — “EYEEEE!” — and then spinning “Louie Lou-eye.” Mike was a true original, and underneath the personae of “Dung boy” was a sweet, tenderhearted guy. I still can’t believe they made a billboard with our pictures on it -- “S and M in the Morning!” I wish I could hear him again (maybe at 7AM) — shouting at the world to listen and rock on! "YEEEOOOW BABY." KEVIN "THE RAT" RADICH: M's enthusiasm, humor, and utter lack of convention was so appealing that it jumped out of the radio and grabbed a hold of the listener. That was was my impression when I joined the morning show at KFOG, in 1985. When I auditioned, live, on the air for that sports guy job, I walked into the studio, and there was M Dung, ragged tee shirt, jeans, no shoes, bouncing around the studio like a madman spinning his magic. He looked at me skeptically, and said, "Hey man, just remember---If you fuck up, DON'T STOP, EYE! Just keep talking, and you'll be cool." I got the job. We became close friends...we went to movies, ate lunch together, traveled to London....he made me laugh out loud. There was no one like him, a meteor streaking across the sky. I loved him. I cherish the time we spent together, both on the air and off. I like to think that combustible energy is lighting up the cosmos. TRISH ROBBINS: Mike Slavko was a joyful and kind man. His love of music helped him morph into the DJ avatar M. Dung. M.’s unique energetic delivery and creativity catapulted him into the headlights of one of the greatest rock and roll radio stations in San Francisco, KFOG where he was instantly adored. I was his morning show producer. Thanks to the support of General Manager Tony Salvadore and Program Director Dave Logan, we were allowed the freedom to dream big and have the “Big Fun” on the radio every morning. Dung had such a boyish charm and glee about this life of his. When he was able to meet some of his musical heroes like “Louie Louie” songwriter Richard Berry or John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival his smile would detonate and burst onto his face, beh-dowww. M. Dung, né Michael Slavko had a sparkle in his EYE and that is how I will always remember him. A-waaaay young man, you made a difference in this world. ~ Trish Robbins July 8, 2017 BEN FONG-TORRES: Radio is showbiz; entertainment, but Mike was for real. Sure, he had his "Dung Boy" shtick, but between sputterings, he had a cool, calm, conversational delivery, perfect for radio. He got saddled with the M. Dung identity and got left behind as the industry favored voice tracked anonymity over personality. As Dave Logan, the KFOG PD who hired him, put it:“No one who heard his show ever forgot him.” He was a real, nice guy. Ben Fong-Torres DAVE KENNEDY, executive with KFOG's former owner: Although I live in York, PA, I was involved with Susquehanna and KFOG for M.'s entire tenure with the station, and I can tell you that he was one of our company's most treasured air personalities. As Dave Logan quickly recognized, M. innately understood and could create good, real radio -- somehow he just knew what that meant -- and yet he was as kind, gentle, humble and caring a human being as one could find. I always enjoyed the time I was able to spend with M. on my visits to the station, as short as those conversations ended up being, unfortunately, and it remains one of the highlights of my career that our KFOG was able to provide a 'home' for one of the most unique talents our business has produced. As so many have already said, I can hear Dung today, and I always will. ROSALIE HOWARTH: Mike was doing mornings 28 years ago, when I went into early labor with my first child during the overnight shift I was pulling. It was 4:30 am and he was due in at 5. So I called my husband, then put on Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys by Traffic....then Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding by Elton John....then Dark Side of the Moon; I put on every 12- minute song I could come up with and waited and waited and .... breathed. He finally blew in the door at 6:20 am, (this was before cell phones) and I flew at him I'm pretty sure with fingernails extended. Poor guy never knew what hit him. But he was super-apologetic, got out of my way, and later sent us sweet (and sheepish) congratulations when the baby was born. Rosalie Howarth KFOG MIKE SHUMANN: Back in 1988 I was looking for a radio gig after my NFL career came to a close. I was a huge fan of KFOG radio…a Foghead…and the Dung Boy. So I took a chance…called Dave Logan…the Program Director…to see if he could use a fill in sports dude on the morning show. Timing is everything…as Kevin the Rat was on vacation and Dave needed someone to fill in for two weeks. I have to say I was in awe of M.Dung…despite the fact I had played with and against the likes of Joe Montana and Jack Tatum…and of course he had no idea I was a Super Bowl Champion. He was like no one I had ever heard on FM radio. His own made up vocabulary…o-day…a-way….eye…and it took a while for me to understand the lingo and get a feel of working with him. Turns out he knew very little about sports….so it was always fun to get into a conversation with him…as you never knew what was coming next. People don’t realize how brilliant he was on and off the air. He had a degree in philosophy…he went into IT after his radio career…and he was one of the sweetest men I knew. We were everywhere back then thanks to our top notch PR man Kenny Wardell. We went to London…Hawaii…and local remotes all over the Bay Area…and everyone just wanted to see Dung Boy. I would bring in guest from the sports world…and they never cared a bit about me…they wanted to meet Dung. His knowledge of rock and roll was unreal…his respect for and his imitation of Elvis maybe even better…and I got to work with him for a few years until he was moved to afternoon drive. I was shocked when he moved on to the FM in the sky…but he will always be a part of the Bay Area radio scene…as there was never anyone like him…and I don’t think there will ever be another like him again. RIP Dung Boy…O-DAY ! PETER FINCH: My favorite M Dung moment: August, 1984. The Democratic National Convention was being held at Moscone Center. KFOG studios were at Ghirardelli Square. Dung was doing his Sunday night Idiot Show. He's on the air and suddenly you hear him say, "Ted Kennedy just walked by the window! (shouting out the window) HEY TED! TED KENNEDY!" Great live radio. KENNY WARDELL: I worked with "Dung Boy" at KFOG for over five years but I'll never forget my very first day on the job there. We were at 55 Green Street then and after turning on the light and dropping off my bag in my new office, Dung was in the doorway with a big fat joint in his hand saying he wanted to welcome me to KFOG after he gets off the air in an hour! "OK now," I say to myself about the warm greeting from my new morning guy! So ten o'clock rolls around and M. tells me to follow him out in the hallway and out on to the fire escape hallway right next to the elevator and he sparks up the joint. All of a sudden, the fire escape door opens rapidly and the KFOG General Manager, Tony Salvadore is standing there and he's not happy. Marijuana smoke has filled the room that Dung & I are in and it has escaped into the hallway directly in front of the station and into the elevator itself. Salvatore wants to see us in his office in five minutes. "Oh great!" I say to myself. "I'm getting fired on the first day of my new job." What's a GM to do? Fire his hot-as-a-pistol morning guy and his new promotion director or open up a few doors and windows and hope that no important client comes up the elevator to the station for at least a half hour. Fortunately for us, Salvadore gave us as stern a warning lecture as I've ever received and his secretary opened all the doors and windows that she could. I never smoked a joint at KFOG ever again. |

We're very excited to be a part of the Steemit community because, like music, and particularly rock - we feel this platform deserves a spotlight on the shake, rattle and roll for a new generation.\n\nAt BAM Magazine, our stories are about the people and the artists who define music. It's multi-generational and timeless.\n\nPlease check out our web site for some great photography and tremendous articles about your favorite San Francisco Bay Area artists and beyond.\nhttp://www.bammagazine.com \n\nWe also have a radio channel you can blow your ears out to - and we have merch in our online store that's always in rotation.\n\nIn the meantime, say hi - let us know if you have any fun stories, pictures and experiences from any concerts you've attended.\n\nOver the coming weeks we'll be introducing more of our staff. First, we would like to thank @pxlmxr for helping to get us on Steemit! He's convinced that this IS the platform to be on if we want to make some coin. In the meantime let's see what we can do! Stay tuned, THANK YOU, let's rock and follow us here on steemit.com!!",

| title | Hello Steemit - we're new here, let us intriduce ourselves! |
| body | We are BAM Magazine - the same magazine, but without ALL that paper! We're very excited to be a part of the Steemit community because, like music, and particularly rock - we feel this platform deserves a spotlight on the shake, rattle and roll for a new generation. At BAM Magazine, our stories are about the people and the artists who define music. It's multi-generational and timeless. Please check out our web site for some great photography and tremendous articles about your favorite San Francisco Bay Area artists and beyond. http://www.bammagazine.com We also have a radio channel you can blow your ears out to - and we have merch in our online store that's always in rotation. In the meantime, say hi - let us know if you have any fun stories, pictures and experiences from any concerts you've attended. Over the coming weeks we'll be introducing more of our staff. First, we would like to thank @pxlmxr for helping to get us on Steemit! He's convinced that this IS the platform to be on if we want to make some coin. In the meantime let's see what we can do! Stay tuned, THANK YOU, let's rock and follow us here on steemit.com!! |
