bodyHow you actually send and receive Bitcoin, and why it's more like digital cash than a credit card ================================================================================== ![bitcoin-2007769_1920.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPptPKDLvCgw8eQMi3pwhux1WEwG2TgM7G6mGaT4ENGi2/bitcoin-2007769_1920.jpg) This is part 2 of a series I'm making to help explain Bitcoin, then eventually other Crypto-Currencies, to average people. You can read the first one here on Steemit: https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@bitcoinbullet/explaining-bitcoin-and-the-blockchain-to-average-joe You can follow the series here, or feel free to check out my website: thebitcoinbullet.com ![BitcoinBulletjpg.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbWpp2VvdWncTLF1UH9tuA4DoKa898gU5vbWV4QiijDsV/BitcoinBulletjpg.jpg) In the last post I explained Bitcoin and gave a brief overview of the new technology.  In this post, I'm going to show you how to use it.  Really, the process is pretty simple and most people won't have any problem with it.  As I mentioned last time, sending BTC is a lot like sending an email.  Once you have all the pieces, sending and receiving is just as easy.  We'll talk about how to go about getting some BTC later, but for now lets get familiar with how to actually go about using BTC. Bitcoin Wallet --------------------- The first thing you'll need is a BTC Wallet.  There are really 2 things that can be called a wallet, a complete set of public and private keys and a software application that handles the keys.  The public and private keys are really a set of random characters, which you use to send and receive coins.  Each wallet has a public key and a private key.  These keys look pretty much exactly the same, but they serve different functions.  The public key is like our email address.  If you want to send someone BTC, you need their public key.  The private key is like the password to the wallet.  In order to spend Bitcoin, you need the wallet's private key.  Here's what they look like. ![address.PNG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmb9aDxjxxtqK41T3NsaukqsLovNjT1Us2khGuGCv5gaxY/address.PNG) The QR codes are representations of the random string of characters below them.  It may seem like a lot of nonsense to remember, but this is where the software applications come in.   A software wallet acts like your email handler, for instance Outlook or Gmail.  There are many different  wallets, and they vary in how they work but for now, I'll focus on using a wallet.  Basically, they all work about the same.  For this article, I'm using the Electrum wallet. Sending Bitcoin -------------------- ![send.PNG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmX2NbUJnBB6A9xWzcAEtQn1RLzqEuwuqw95YasdsxPMrE/send.PNG) As you can see, the setup is pretty straight forward.  In the "Pay to" box you put in the address of the person you are sending BTC to.  Make sure you copy and paste!!!  If you enter even one character wrong then your Bitcoin are gone:  there's no getting them back.  You can enter a description of a short note, and then enter the amount of BTC you'd like to send.  The "Fee" slider allows you to select how much of a fee you want to pay. (This will determine how fast your transaction is processed:  more on this later)  Then click send.  If you have password security set up, you'll be prompted to enter it next. (you should)  That's all there is to it! Receiving Bitcoin -------------------------- It looks about the same, doesn't it?  Well, it's actually easier than it looks here.  Remember, all someone needs to send you BTC is your public address.  Here, you see the characters and the QR code.  To receive BTC, simply give your public address to the person paying you.  They will enter it into their wallet as shown above and send you the coins.  If they are on a phone, they can just scan the QR code!  You can leave your public address in the open for anyone to see.  In fact, that's actually one of Mine above! (Feel free to send a tip:) Digital Cash ---------------- ![Taxation-Is-Theft-Digital-Currency-Bitcoin-2291396.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeARHW5nAob9u2SZKm9qqSJrYsEdNLgnSKYiqdcZqKBuN/Taxation-Is-Theft-Digital-Currency-Bitcoin-2291396.jpg) Bitcoin is like Digital cash because it shares some common features with cash that distinguish it from credit cards, checks, and other payment forms.  Like paper cash, if you lose it then it's gone.  There is no bank or credit card company to restore you.  Also like paper cash, once you spend BTC there is no way to reverse the transaction.  You can't call the bank and tell them to cancel the charge, because there's no bank. . It may not be a perfect comparison, but learning to think of BTC as cash will help get you into the habit of thinking about security.  Using a bank allows you to let someone else worry about your money's security but it costs you.  Having Bitcoin is more like having cash.  You must keep it safe because nobody else is going to do it for you. About Fees and Transaction Times -------------------------------------------------- As it's a new technology, and still technically under development, Bitcoin is constantly facing challenges it must overcome.  Currently, the biggest challenge BTC faces is something called scale-ability.  Basically, there is more demand for Bitcoin than the network can currently keep up with.  There are solutions being worked on, and some about to be implemented, designed to help with this problem. Until then, transaction fees may be a little higher than expected.  It's not a big issue if you're sending larger amounts, but it may cost $1.75 to send $5 worth of BTC.  You can opt to pay a lower fee, but the transaction will take longer that way.  Don't worry, though, the solutions already exist.  We're just waiting for the community of developers to figure out implementation. Now, Go Get Some Bitcoin! -------------------------------------- ![bitcoin-2373271_1920.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmf6FLrSphSWTnU4YtGkZV22qM3QhvguuEjhcN4PkYZD6o/bitcoin-2373271_1920.jpg) You should by now be able to send and receive Bitcoin.  The process is pretty much the same no matter which wallet you choose to use.  The only thing left is to go out and get some BTC and join the monetary revolution!  I'll have a post showing how to buy BTC on an exchange, but if you want to try it on your own you can buy BTC for US Dollars by following the links below. https://localbitcoins.com/buy-bitcoins-online/?ch=cznd https://paxful.com/roots/buy-bitcoin?affiliate=mPGYjXpLQ2n https://www.Coinmama.com/?ref=thebitcoinbullet https://www.coinbase.com/join ![Untitled design.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdArFE9E1L6VB8agFJDMVtrd6XerpeMM9wwz5KnAnY6iX/Untitled%20design.jpg)

bodyHello Steemers! I've recently launched a blog called thebitcoinbullet.com with the intent to convince more people to jump on board the cryptocurrency train. It's brand new so I'm building now, and the first thing I'm trying to make is a resource for people who aren't technically inclined but want to learn about Bitcoin. It's also going to be helpful for recommending to people when you're trying to explain it to them and they're just not getting it. I know there's stuff out there, but I figured one more perspective can't hurt, right? With that thought in mind, I'm putting them all up on Steemit first so I can gather feedback from you, the crypto-community. I'm really trying to put the cookies on the lower shelf here, so if something doesn't quite make sense, I'd like your feedback. So, without further ado... What is Bitcoin - Understanding the Blockchain ======================================= The first question most people ask when they hear about Bitcoin is, "what is Bitcoin?"  What follows is often an excited explanation with a bunch of words you haven't heard before, and you're left wondering what the heck they are talking about.  Well I'm here to help with that. ![bitcoin-2373271_1920.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmf6FLrSphSWTnU4YtGkZV22qM3QhvguuEjhcN4PkYZD6o/bitcoin-2373271_1920.jpg) I'm going to explain Bitcoin in a way that makes sense to the average person who isn't a techno-geek, and doesn't want to be one.   This isn't going to be a technical explanation, but one that will help you understand the concepts without having to learn programming or complicated math.  Bitcoin is a totally new invention, like the internet was, and like the internet you don't have to understand exactly how it works to use it. . So, what is Bitcoin? Well, when we talk about Bitcoin, or BTC, we're really talking about three things; Bitcoin --------- Basically this is digital cash. Just like the cash you get from the government, BTC can be traded from one person directly to another person in exchange for goods and/or services without a go-between like a bank or credit card company Blockchain --------------- A digital record of all transactions, stored on computers all over the world.  Unlike paper cash or coins, BTC isn't physical.  Because of this there has to be a way to make sure that people can't figure out a way to cheat the system and make fake BTC, or take their BTC back after paying someone.  BTC accomplishes this with a copy of all transactions stored on millions of computers world-wide. Network ----------- Because it's digital and there has to be a ledger kept, there must be someone or something keeping the ledger up to date.  BTC does this by giving people a reason to keep the ledger up and process transaction:  they get paid.   There are other computers checking their work making sure everyone agrees. Lets break those down a little bit, one at a time. ![bitcoin-2007769_1920.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPptPKDLvCgw8eQMi3pwhux1WEwG2TgM7G6mGaT4ENGi2/bitcoin-2007769_1920.jpg) Bitcoin ---------- The idea of BTC as digital cash trips some people up because in this day and age we're all so used to the idea that money has to come from the government.  There's a lot of games played with definitions about what makes money, but the reality is that anything people want to use as money, they can.  BTC is cash because people want it, and they'll trade you stuff for it.  You can trade it for gold and silver, U.S. Dollars, goods and services, and virtually anything you can think of.  It may not be "money" but it's for sure cash. Another reason BTC is like cash is because the transactions are irreversible.  If you send someone BTC, the only way to get it back is for them to give it back to you.  There's no calling Visa and having them cancel the charge.  Similar to a five dollar bill, once it's handed over, it's gone. A third reason BTC is like cash is because you can "make change."  Well, technically you don't need to make change in Bitcoin, but for cash to work, you have to be able to break down larger denominations into smaller, so you can buy something worth a hundred bucks, or a quarter with the same bill.  With Bitcoin, you just send fractions of a BTC in the exact value you want.  So, you can buy something for one BTC, or .00001 BTC. Blockchain ---------------- Image By Davidstankiewicz (Own work) [CC BY-SA 4.0], via Wikimedia Commons ![Blockchain1.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXcjw6fh87yA4yusVsYRj11a81Q2dHkLgzAxUK3XBmpf8/Blockchain1.jpg) When you spend paper cash, you just hand it to another person and the deal's done, but with Bitcoin, it's more like sending an email.  Each person has a wallet which is kind of like an email program like Outlook or Thunderbird and an address, just like email.  So, when you send bitcoin from one wallet to another, the record of that transaction is stored on the Blockchain.  This record is millions of computers all over the world and they're all constantly checking each other to make sure they all agree. How all this works is basically magic to most people.  The short answer is that it's made possible by cryptography (think secret codes and passwords and math).  There are more detailed explanations available for those interested, but most people don't need to know how all this stuff works.  Bitcoin is open source, though, meaning if you are a programmer and you think it looks fishy, you can take a look under the hood and see how it works.  In fact, that's how Bitcoin is still being developed! The big innovation for Bitcoin, is that the Blockchain is decentralized, which means there isn't a central authority, or location where it exists.  Instead, the Blockchain exists on a network of computers run by users all over the world sharing the responsibility.  Being on computers all over the world makes it very resistant to being shut down or taken over because you have to actually shut down all the computers running the program to shut the Blockchain down.  This means that even if a government makes Bitcoin illegal, it will still live on in other countries, and it will still have value. Network --------------- ![spider-web-with-water-beads-921039.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcZTQL2KcTVBJtxBFvHRjTtv3dKr6t6kP9kP2dWoGWrCE/spider-web-with-water-beads-921039.jpg) The Bitcoin network is all the parts of Bitcoin working together to form a world-wide economy.  It takes a lot of real life time and effort, computing power, and money spent on equipment and utilities to make all this happen.  This network is where Bitcoin derives its value, because real people have real money and time invested in it and they have a financial incentive to keep the network going. The Bitcoin Network provides financial incentives to operate and maintain the network, so there will always be people willing to maintain the network as long as they can make money by doing it.  Mostly this is done by specialty equipment and now there is a whole industry around creating these machines. The network grows stronger with every person who uses Bitcoin.  Some people just like to play with new tech so they buy a little to spend.  Some people want to buy some in the hopes it will increase in value making them a nice profit.  Some people actually work for Bitcoin.  All of these people and businesses add to the strength of the Bitcoin network. That's a basic overview of what Bitcoin is and how it works.  There's definitely lots more to learn about this new technology, so stay tuned to thebitcoinbullet.com for more free info!! ![Untitled design.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdArFE9E1L6VB8agFJDMVtrd6XerpeMM9wwz5KnAnY6iX/Untitled%20design.jpg) http://thebitcoinbullet.com/2017/06/30/what-is-bitcoin/

value.\n\nNetwork\n---------------\n![spider-web-with-water-beads-921039.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcZTQL2KcTVBJtxBFvHRjTtv3dKr6t6kP9kP2dWoGWrCE/spider-web-with-water-beads-921039.jpg)\n\nThe Bitcoin network is all the parts of Bitcoin working together to form a world-wide economy.  It takes a lot of real life time and effort, computing power, and money spent on equipment and utilities to make all this happen.  This network is where Bitcoin derives its value, because real people have real money and time invested in it and they have a financial incentive to keep the network going.\n\nThe Bitcoin Network provides financial incentives to operate and maintain the network, so there will always be people willing to maintain the network as long as they can make money by doing it.  Mostly this is done by specialty equipment and now there is a whole industry around creating these machines.\n\nThe network grows stronger with every person who uses Bitcoin.  Some people just like to play with new tech so they buy a little to spend.  Some people want to buy some in the hopes it will increase in value making them a nice profit.  Some people actually work for Bitcoin.  All of these people and businesses add to the strength of the Bitcoin network.\n\nThat's a basic overview of what Bitcoin is and how it works.  There's definitely lots more to learn about this new technology, so stay tuned to thebitcoinbullet.com for more free info!!\n\n\n![Untitled bodyHello Steemit users, I hope you're all having a wonderful day! I'm launching a Bitcoin/Cryptocurrency website and this Steemit blog, called thebitcoinbullet.com. By way of introduction, here's my about page from the website. There's not much there today, but it's coming. Steemit allows me to get the posts out without having to worry about all the website technical which I'm still trying to figure out right now, so you all can be my test net. My goal is to try to spread knowledge and awareness of Bitcoin and Cryptocurrencies, so some of my content may be a little behind the tech knowledge curve here on Steemit. (Because you're all so smart you already know how awesome Crypto is!) Now, about thebitcoinbullet.com By the rude bridge that arched the flood, Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled, Here once the embattled farmers stood, And fired the shot heard round the world. Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Concord Hymn" ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQB39CQRWxM6H5U1jkqcUKgcZN9AhqgootCTYpEs8iKQA/image.png)   On April 19th, 1775 in Concord Massachusetts a group of men stood ready to oppose the most powerful force on the planet with little more than lofty ideals and hunting rifles.  Despite being outgunned and out-trained these men stood their ground in opposition to tyranny.  The events of that day have faded into legend, so nobody knows who it was that fired that first shot, but that its impact was felt around the world is undeniable.   The men and women of the American Colonies had lived as proud and loyal British citizens, but throughout the years they learned to feel the pinch of heavy handed government and high taxes.  The time had come for them to stand up to a King and government they felt was out of touch with their needs.  What followed was a bloody war, then a wave of change circled the globe.   In the wake of the revolution, a new nation was born, a nation designed to protect individuals from the power of government.  It wasn't perfect, but the nation born went on to become the most prosperous and powerful nations in the world.  With the high value citizens placed on individual liberty, it seemed the nation would continue its era of wealth and liberty indefinitely, but it was not to be.   As generally happens, people became complacent.  In the U.S., and around the world people gradually forgot the wars that were fought to make men free.  Governments became larger and larger, until eventually, they became too large to be sustained.  Gold and silver couldn't be extracted from the people quick enough, governments needed a way to create money to sustain growth, so central banks were created and allowed to manipulate the money in order to support all the wars, social programs, and deficit spending.   ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZx3d63YeWVsSVtmjUVK7GJMUKsijw7o6Q6Ug741QRc1c/image.png) The results have been devastating.  Since the Federal Reserve Act in 1913, the U.S. Government has steadily increased in size, and as the U.S. goes, so goes the rest of the world.  Governments now have the power to enact laws that spend taxpayer money before it's created, then borrow the money from the Federal Reserve system with interest.  This guarantees continued raises in taxes because the government has already spent the money by the time new budgets are passed.   The end result of all the currency manipulations worldwide is that humanity is less free than it should be.  True, there are advances in society, but the progressions are lethargic due to the vast resources being sucked out of humanity by the leaches that control the Central Banks.  People all over the world are experiencing lower wages, longer working hours, higher unemployment rates, evaporation of savings, and disappearance of opportunity for upward mobility.  At the same time, a very select few individuals have compiled vast wealth, so much so that a few individuals control enough wealth to feed the entire world several times over, yet people still starve.   ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYAdTLrTVJg4twaKjzAfV8qr8rbQaTFpFsBq6xFjNgd91/image.png) The situation may appear dire, and the way out hidden, but all isn't lost.  Fortunately, not all the great individuals of the world were born in the Enlightenment.  Recognizing that the monetary system is the leg that holds the table up, an unknown genius calling himself/herself Satoshi Nakamoto designed a system that allows individuals to opt out of the corrupt banking systems that are robbing the world of so much wealth, and allowing gigantic governments to expand indefinitely.   In 2009 Satoshi gave his invention to world free of charge, and thus firing the latest "shot heard round the world."  The shot is the invention of the Blockchain.  The bullet, is Bitcoin.   By firing the Bitcoin Bullet, Satoshi started a worldwide revolution.  Not a revolution against governments, but a revolution against systems of control.  What's more, Satoshi found a way for humanity to throw off the chains of oppression without violence.  This new revolution is a revolution of ideas.  The more the idea is spread, the more liberty is spread.   TheBitcoinBullet exists to help this new revolution succeed.  By spreading awareness and educating people in the ideas and use of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, TheBitcoinBullet hopes to be a part of increasing adoption and thus freeing the world.   Won't you join the revolution? ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXXt68Yy6apTQdb5bUuEDTyQrg4Lpm44ugqngLkKbtyUK/image.png)
