| body |

The Bitcoin blockchain has become slow, transactions take time to be confirmed and one has to pay a premium for miners to quickly confirm one’s transactions. This is the tyranny of miners and Bitcoin is caught in a rather Marxesque struggle between the proletariat, of which I am part of (those who don’t mine) and the bourgeoisie (miners) resulting in what I term as the “Fork Wars.” One of the ways to address this weakness of the blockchain is to conduct a hard-fork.What is a hard-fork you ask? Well, it is positively Robert-Frostian, remember his poem, “ Two roads diverged in a yellow wood…and sorry I could not travel both…Then I took the other, as just as fair…and having perhaps the better claim.”

Simply put, it is a permanent divergence from the previous protocol of a software. In blockchain terms, it is a transmutation of the previous version of the blockchain code base to a newer and robust one.Essentially, it is meant to make previously invalid blocks or transactions valid and the contrary also holds true. This means that the nodes have to migrate to the new version, otherwise nothing will work, there is no backward-compatibility. It is my duty to also introduce to you the term soft-fork, which is a light way of carrying out a fork only previously invalid blocks are validated. The old nodes recognize the newly-validated blocks, thus a soft-fork is said to be backward-compatible.The Bitcoin hard-fork is seen as an inevitability by most Bitcoin leaders, if it is to scale, especially with the increase of adoption.

This debate has taken place over the years and a consensus is drawing. Much as been stated on blockchain’s technical limitations and overall strategy in terms of the philosophical underpinnings behind it are going to thrive. Of course this is a concern for anyone using Bitcoin to carry out business, particularly the Bitcoin marketplaces, exchanges. I guess the question for them is, will they let people trade the traditional Bitcoin plus whatever version there’s going to be?The major bone of contention is the block size. The current version of the blockchain has a 1MB block size limit. Why is this important? Well, transactions in the Bitcoin network are added onto the blockchain in blocks. The blocks can only hold a finite number of transactions. Let’s look at some math(it is important):

Block size- 1MB (1,000,000 bytes)

Average Transaction Size- e.g. 400 bytes

Total number of transactions in a block- 1,000,000/400 = 2,500 transactions

A block is realized every ten minutes. In an hour, for instance, the total number of confirmed transactions would be 15,000 transactions. That is a concern, specifically when you compare with other customary transaction tools like credit cards, which work with seconds rather than minutes. The two sides are effectively divided into two:

1. Bitcoin Core: This is basically a soft-fork. With this group, they believe that change takes time, and this process takes time. These folks believe in sticking with the current 1MB block size, the continuous improvement of the code base to allow for smaller transactions and ultimately increase the Bitcoin transaction volume. The proposed solution to this end is known as Segregated Witness or commonly called SegWit. This solution solves a lot of links, but this camp only wants to focus on one aspect, which is lowering the transaction size. This helps, as you probably divined, with increasing the number of transactions. SegWit wants to fix the myriad of Bitcoin glitches utilizing the lighting network (allows for lightening transactions without having to worry for confirmation times). It would allow for millions or even billions of transactions.

2. Bitcoin Unlimited: This is the hard-fork. The people on this side of the divide are concerned with large blocks, increasing the block size from 2 MB and further increases; this creates the possibility of unlimited block sizes. The miners here have the say! As a long term solution, it makes sense. It increases the number of transactions. Currently, BU has a 40% harsh rate and when it gets to 50%, they could be able to force that irreversible fork. Whichever way the needle points, we must not forget the original motive of the Bitcoin-Blockchain, our first love. The ability t0 scale is the essence of innovation, this cannot be denied. Each method presents its own challenges, but we must look to the end, the means by which we justify it will determine the fate of posterity for this technology. Remember (thinks about The Matrix film), there is no fork. Now, the main miners and developers of bitcoin came to an accord of adopting a new way of operating the crypto-currency. And this new technology has been christened SegWit2x. However, there is a a rival which has launched, dubbed Bitcoin Cash.

While SegWit2x might have averted a crisis, the latter is sure to cause a ruckus. Now the activation of SegWit took place on the 1st of August 2017 and it locked on 8th of August 2017; the Bitcoin price is expected to reach new heights, crossing the $3000 price point as people react to the fork.

|

"body": "
\n

\n
\n
\n
But then again, the trajectory of technology is to ever lean forward, thusly, one cannot fail to behold the smorgasbord of mining technology in the market, not to mention the political kerfuffle raging on the efficiency of the blockchain, namely the Bitcoin Classic and Bitcoin Unlimited.

What usually used to happen is people would use their CPU on the laptop to mine Bitcoin. Now, this was not a profitable venture, given the cost of mining in terms of hardware and electricity was more than the seemingly worthless hundreds of thousands coins. People just donated their capabilities for the sake of maintaining this new revolutionary monetary system. Little did they know that all was about to change.Great, let’s go back to the beginning; you want to know what mining is.

Mining is essentially utilizing computer power to process transactions, securing the network, and essentially keeping everyone in the system sane. And the people who guard this so-called wall, the Sworn Brothers of the Night's Watch, if you will, are known as the Miners. Each miner possesses a node, which is a terminal from which the network is held together as I insinuated at the outset, new bitcoins are issued. The mining process is decentralized, that means no single miner will have all the power. So how this takes place is the miner runs Bitcoin mining software and modules for specialized Bitcoin hardware.

The software and hardware enable the miners to highlight and process transactions, from which they earn a fee for upholding the network in terms of faster processing and the just-issued bitcoins. And all this happens within the precepts of mathematics.Speaking of mathematics, it is the guiding light that illuminates the universe. The Bitcoin network would not be possible without it. You need to understand that for new transactions to be confirmed, they have to be transferred into a block, hence the name, ‘Blockchain’ in association with mathematical proof of work. I am sure you have an idea what proof of work signifies, essentially it is a modicum of data that was difficult to produce, whether in terms of cost or the time-taken so as to achieve certain requirements. Bitcoin applies what is known as the hashcash proof of work. It is for the purpose of generating blocks.

The proof of work here refers to the pieces of data that make each block valid. Each block generated informs on the block that precedes it and the way this is built precludes people from tampering with the blockchain. The most famous proof of work algorithm introduced by the Bitcoin Protocol is the SHA-256.Let’s put that in perspective. Since the beginning of time, especially at the close of the 2009, miners would hash 8 million times per second, and that figure went up to 116, 000,000,000 times per to 10 trillion times per second in late 2010 and early 2014 respectively. This leads to network difficulty and thus the advent of the halving event. And in extension it has also created the scramble for hardware for mining. And in that regard, hardware has moved from CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array) to the sophisticated ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit), which is a chip built specific to run the SHA-256 algorithm. We could go into more detail, but that is a topic for another day.Mining takes place all over the world, with most of it being carried out in China.

That said, I should state that mining in Africa, particularly here in Kenya offers feasibility difficulty due to the associated costs. The digital gold rush continues and as adoption grows, the need for mining efficiency continues. However, mining is proving unsustainable with the amount of energy consumption and in terms of taking care of our mother Earth. It is this line of thought that prompts the application of Proof of Stake, which supplants the concept of hard-core mining and extols its virtues as a virtual mining process. John Karanja, our Lead Consultant gave a presentation on The Blockchain Opportunity for Financial Inclusion which covered the use of Blockchain technology for Credit Scoring. This presentation was informed by the recent law passed by the Kenyan parliament capping interest rates at 4.5% above the Central Bank Rate (CBR). This law effectively ensures that monthly interest rates do not exceed 14.5%. The law was passed due to huge outcry from the Kenyan loan borrowers due to high interest rates. John presented on the how Blockchain technology could bring transparency to the lending industry by allowing the different parties involved i.e. Lenders, Borrower and Regulators to securely audit lending transactions.

Lenders would be able to asses a borrowers true/fair credit risk.

Borrowers would be rewarded for paying loans on time.

Regulators would have transparency into loans issued by lenders and mitigate against massive loan defaults and subsequent bank loans.

View full presentation below. John was also able to briefly take the workshop attendees through Blockchain and Bitcoin technology as they had many questions and concerns revolving around the technology. The Central Bank of Kenya in December 2015 issued a public notice warning against the use of Crypto-Currencies due to system risks. BitHub.Africa has written a response titled The Blockchain Opportunity, here. BitHub.Africa will continue to engage regulators across the continent given the opportunity, to advocate for use of Blockchain technology to solve local problems wherever possible.
The Blockchain Opportunity for Financial Inclusion by BitHub Africa on Scribd
|

| body |

Its amazing how Steem and its web app SteemIt has been able to revolutionize the way content is created and shared today. SteemIt is a social media platform similar to Reddit or Tumblr that leverages Blockchain and rewards content contributors. Steem is currently accessible online at SteemIt.com on a Web interface.

SteemIt can achieve even greater heights by developing a mobile user experience that targets the millions of creatives around the World who are looking for creative ways to earn an income. There are 99,832,718 units of Steem with the symbol STEEM which can further be divided into smaller units ensuring that there is enough potential earning power for earners on this platform especially if the platform is able to sustain its growth and get adopted in places such as Africa.

There is an interesting blog written on SteemIt by @Invore who tells the story of how he has been able to generated over $40,000 of SteemIt just from blogging, read here. While this is an amazing feat there is even more opportunity for many people to generate relevant content for their context. For example an African doctor can write blogs on how he is able to treat patients in the villages giving crucial tips to other people facing similar health issues around the World. Indeed it is NOT only about generating Steem Dollars but also adding value to people lives.

In our Blockchain Opportunity eBook we look at some of the key characteristics of SteemIt that could make it a huge success and bring normal everyday people into the Crypto-Currency space. They Include:

Innovation: Steem has identified a niche market where traditionally social media companies, such as Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter earn billions of dollars in revenue from content generated by its users. These users do not benefit from this earnings despite spending time and effort in curating their content. Steem supports social media and online communities by returning much of its value to the people who provide contributions by rewarding them with virtual currency. Other existing Crypto-currency tipping platforms require users to send Bitcoin as a reward to content providers. With Steem, rewards are sent out for activities such as upvoting a post. The Steem Blockchain distributes payouts in two ways which are 50% Steem Power for voting and 50% Steem Dollars. This rewards are distributed within 24 hours of content being posted on the platform. The challenge for Steem is how to replicate its Web success in the mobile and app World think about how successful the Pokemon Go phenomenon has been in enabling people interact with the real world. This success is because the user experience of the application has been so well thought and developed for the mobile platform.

User Experience: Steem has a very simple to use online platform that allows users to post their content online and earn Steem Dollars and Power. According to Eeks (Eeks, 2016) a user on the SteemIt Web2.0 platform is flexible and is what each person makes of it. It's also easy. Self-evident and easy. You sign up and write a blog or share news like on reddit or post photos or disseminate a white papers or tag a recipe or a hotel review and so on. That's why it's able to onboard so many new, different people.

As shown in the Image above Steemit.Com web application is very similar to Wordpress a Web2.0 blogging tool that is behind about 60% of websites on the Internet today. The main difference is that users of SteemIt as shown in the image above are able to earn Steem dollars for their posted content. Furthermore, there seems to be a correlation with how many followers and comments a post has and the number of Steem dollars earned for the post.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRGmmvxCKnQ

The video above by Craig Grant explains how the SteemIt.com platform works. He explains, The reader is able to earn Steem Dollars from following the author and posting comments. An article by user eeks stated that SteemIt is Bitcoins killer application because it brings fresh and new people into the Crypto-currency space as they are already familiar with blogging. Indeed SteemIt has been able to enroll people from diverse backgrounds who are now posting a wide range of content ranging from academic papers to artistic content. As Eeks states in his article that most of this people have never bought Bitcoin before but are now earning Crypto-currency for their work. Steem should now also introduce a micro blogging component similar to Tumblr.

Target Market and Potential: Steem is a well thought Crypto-currency project that is successfully merging the Web 2.0 with the use of Blockchain. Steem is currently adding 600 users a day and has the potential to grow to millions of users with the current momentum especially if it make use of mobile technology like Android phone which are being adopted exponentially in places like Africa . Should Steem be successful it will have introduced thousands of people into the World of Crypto-currencies. Indeed, Steem lists the following benefits to identified markets segments, which includes:

Entrepreneurs: Who can use the Steem platform to empower people around the World.

Content Creators:Who can reach more people and get appreciation for their efforts in content creation.

Readers: Who can identify the best content by rewarding the content creators and curators with Steem Dollars and Power.

Market-Makers: Who can generate liquitidy while earning Steem and Steem Dollars trading on the inbuilt Blockchain-based exchange incentives.

Social Media Sites: Can Integrate Steem to empower their users to earn for their posts and their time on your site.

What is your Steem story do share it with us in the comment section below we will post the best comments in our ebook titled The African Blockchain Opportunity.

|
