Photo: Anton Darius Unsplash*\n\n\nAlthough anecdotal reports bemoaning the state of the initial coin offering (ICO) market are seemingly appearing everywhere, the statistics for the first month of the new year are telling a very different story. A revolutionary new funding method, in its short life the ICO has both catapulted numerous companies to short term success and likewise, attracted its fair share of criticism.\n\nHard as it is to believe we've rocketed through one twelfth of 2019 already - the ICO data for January is in - and if ICOs are dying, they're definitely not going gently in to the good night.\nHow do we know this? Well for us to understand the current state of the ICO market, it's best we view it through the lens of the past. Without further ado, let's do what any good researcher should and dive straight in to the data.\n\nIn 2013, the first two ICOs ever launched made their debut. If we are to take money as the sole metric for ICO raise success, Mastercoin took poll position in the 2013 token sale race.\n\nBy today's standards, Mastercoin performed fairly poorly. But in 2013, it had just made crypto history, raising $600,000 purely from pre-issued cryptographic tokens, with an as-of-yet unproven value. In addition to this historical feat, it also beat its only other competitor, NXT, into submission - which took just $16,800 in comparison during the latter half of the year; bringing total ICO raises during 2013 to a not-so-grand total of $616,800.\n\nFast forward six years later to January 2019 - where we've witnessed over 24 ICOs successfully concluded in just 31 days, seen an average daily raise of over $9 million dollars, and a total raise of $291 million dollars - and it seems like the heart of the ICO market is still very much beating.\n\nIn fact, the single largest individual raise during this January took more than the amount raised from all of the nine ICOs concluded during January 2017, pretty impressive right? But there's more. The ICO class of January 2019 likewise saw a total raise which was almost triple that of the whole of 2016, and several orders of magnitude greater than the years 2013, 2014 and 2015 combined.\n\nSo far, if the first month of 2019 is anything to go by, you might wonder why there's an exodus away from the ICO funding model. At this point, if you're paying attention, you're probably thinking I've missed something. Something important, and you'd be right. A gigantic black-hole of crypto history which until now I may have purposefully omitted - the entirety of 2018.\n\nJanuary 2018, the absolute peak of decentralized insanity, saw $2.14 billion dollars of capital poured in to ICO raises. That's $1.8 billion greater than during January 2019.\n\nHelped in part by the conclusion of the $4.1 billion EOS initial coin offering, and the Telegram ICO private pre-sale, the historic level of funding entering the ICO space in January of 2018 was surpassed only by March and June of the same year, which raised $4.5 and $5.8 billion respectively.\n\nOf course, these record-breaking raises were little comfort to a market which lost $700 billion of its capitalization during 2018, and for many blockchain investors, it would be comforting to pretend the 2018 crypto market roller coaster hadn't happened at all. \n \nBut to view the meteoric rise and subsequent catastrophic fall back towards Earth as the death throes of the ICO market may be short-sighted to say the least. Rather, it's probably better viewed as a healthy return to 'normal' - and discounting the mania and subsequent depressive slump following the immense bull market of late 2017 to early 2018, the ICO market has proven by its January 2019 performance that it's experienced strong year-on-year growth.\n\nSo, what does the future look like for initial coin offerings? During 2019, it's likely that only those ICOs whose tokens have a genuine utility are likely to gain traction. By comparison, of the 1082 ICOs which concluded in 2018, despite record breaking raises, many have failed to make it past the starting gate. \n \nRegulation has weighed heavily on the ICO market. Many ICOs which started in good faith found themselves at odds with increasing scrutiny from regulatory bodies the world over. Most feared among these ICO harbingers of doom have been the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), who have been relentlessly pursuing those offerings which have crossed the thin line from utility token to digital security. \n \nPerhaps in an effort by the blockchain industry to combat this crackdown, there's a new token in town - the security token. Estimated to be worth $10 trillion by 2020, security token offerings (STOs) leave no doubt as to their function and identity - they are cryptographic representations of real-world assets, subject in most cases to the same laws governing traditional securities. \n\nBut although STOs are likely to be most in vogue during 2019, the ICO, the original crypto funding device, could find renewed interest as companies develop use cases which genuinely require a token to function.\n\nJust like the dot. com boom and bust, the decade that followed the almighty web-based slump saw healthy and steady increases in the most promising projects in internet technology; many of which are now household names, impossible to imagine life without. Today, we may be seeing the same happening as the ICO market matures.\n\nWhile the ICO market is still just six years young, it might be too early for us all to be writing its obituary. So, are ICOs dead in 2019? Or have they simply finished their painful birth, and now they're down to serious business?",

Because there's a crucial element of your STO that you won't get very far without. This essential element will turn that alphabet-soup of ideas in your head into a clear, concise and converting *tour de force* - making your readers sit up and listen, instead of falling asleep. \n\n**It's an STO Whitepaper - and you need one.**\n\nMore importantly, your investors need one. You might know exactly how your idea works, but your investors don't. Your whitepaper is your first and best opportunity to explain it to them.\n\nWe're going to walk you through the best practices in STO whitepaper writing right here. But first, without naming and shaming, let's look at some major faux pas in the world of whitepapers. \n\n\n\n<h2> The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. </h2>\n\nWe lied. We're not going to look at what makes a good whitepaper. We'll get to that later. But here's three bad and down right ugly common mistakes and why you should avoid them. \n\n<h4> 1. No Executive Summary </h4>\n\nIf you open up an STO whitepaper and you're confronted immediately with the tokenomic mechanics, you'd be forgiven for wondering whether this project is a complex scientific experiment, or if it actually has a defined business value proposition. \n\nThis is your chance to present your problem, technology and solution in a digestible chunk, around 500 words maximum, so straight off the bat your reader knows who you are and what you stand for. \n\nMost importantly, they can decide if they want to read the rest of your whitepaper, predicated on how interesting your executive summary is - and you do want them to read the rest of your whitepaper, so it's best to get this bit right. \n\n<h4> 2. Speeling and, grammatical Erorrs </h4>\n\n\nAnnoying aren't they? It might seem pedantic. Petty even. But trust us, nothing instills caution in a prospective investor like spelling and grammatical errors the entire way through your whitepaper. \n\nWe're not talking one or two mishaps in a 35-page document. However if your whitepaper reads inconsistently, it can quickly become hard to follow - and it makes your job, of explaining your brilliant idea, that little bit harder. \n\nFor non-native English speakers, or for those who may be a little unsure, enlist the expertise of a professional proof reader. \n\n<h4> 3. Assuming too much Knowledge </h4>\n\nYou might be able to recite the original Bitcoin whitepaper verbatim, but don't assume your readers will. Blockchain developers are a smart bunch, to say the least, but the propensity for developers to jump straight in at the deep end can cause confusion for your readers. All too often, whitepapers will be overly tech heavy too early on, pushing away even the most committed readers. \n\nRemember, with STOs more so than their earlier cousins, the ICO, you're going to be attracting the attention of traditional investors who might not fully understand the need for blockchain technology. Whilst you're definitely not writing a tome extolling the virtues of blockchain for everything under the sun, you do want to show why you've identified it as a necessary solution to your problem. \n\nSo, don't come on too strong. Warm your reader up by giving a comprehensive, but succinct introduction as to why cryptographic assets and blockchain are important for your STO. \n\n<h2>The Good (No Really)</h2>\n\nWithout further ado, let's examine what actually makes a great whitepaper. Any STO whitepaper writer will tell you that the following sections and writing styles are crucial for success. \n\n<h4> Main Structure </h4>\n\n\nThese are the key sections your STO whitepaper can't go without. \n\n<h4> Legal Declarations   </h4>\n\nFor an operator, this is the single most important aspect of your whitepaper. Legal declarations should likewise be featured prominently on your website and token sale page. As a basic overview, your legal documentation should include know your customer and anti money laundering (KYC/AML) requirements, disclaimers, terms of investment, and most importantly - a statement of risk. \n\nUnless you're a qualified lawyer don't try and write STO legal documentation alone, hire an accredited law professional with a specialism in cryptographic assets and securities. \n\n\n<h4>Executive Summary </h4>\n\n\nExecutive summaries are often written in a more personal tone to the rest of the whitepaper. They are the first meaningful interaction between the reader and the writer, and what you include within your executive summary will influence the attitude of the reader throughout the rest of the whitepaper. \n\n\n<h4>Industry Review </h4>\n\n\nHow can you solve a problem, or bring liquidity to a market, which you know nothing about? The industry review section of your whitepaper proves to your potential investors that you are a thought leader for your sector. \n\nThe industry review should closely examine the current state of your industry, it's specific pain points, limitations, other emergent technologies which could compete with your solution, and the market potential of your offering. \n\nThe industry review should read like an academic literature review - well referenced, properly cited, balanced and unbiased. This is where you use the data to support your unique value proposition. Now explain how it works. This section will be fairly technical and rely heavily on developer input - but make sure you have a competent copywriter look over it prior to publication. You could include your tokenomic model as part of the previous section. \n\nTechnicalities aside, this section needs to flow and make sense, even to a layperson. \n\n\n<h4>Security Token Offering </h4>\n\n\nHere, you can delve in to your security token offering, including token amounts, vesting and lockup periods, and distribution methods. \n\nYou're going to want to consult with an STO agency and legal professional to decide on the exact specifications and economics of your token sale, but when it comes to writing this section you're going to want to employ a professional writer to ensure it's perfect - as any errors could lead to investor trouble down the line. \n\n\n<h4>Team Introductions </h4>\n\n\nAlthough it's sometimes omitted, your whitepaper should also ideally include an overview of your team, their expertise, and what makes them so well placed to deliver your project. \n\nMake sure you include any and all relevant experience they have with similar projects. \n\n\nOnce your whitepaper is complete, start from the beginning, and give it a thorough review. In 2013, the first two ICOs ever launched made their debut. The most successful one of these two ICO pioneers, if money is our metric for success, was Mastercoin (Omni).  \n\nBy today's standards, Mastercoin performed pretty poorly. But in 2013, Mastercoin had just made cryptographic history, in raising $600,000 purely from pre-issued cryptographic assets. In addition, it beat its only other competitor that year, NXT, into submission - which took just $16,800 in comparison. \n\nAlthough it's hard to believe we've rocketed through one twelfth of 2019 already - the ICO data for January is in, and if ICOs are dying, they're definitely not doing so with dignity. \n\nOver 24 ICOs took in a huge $291,651,950 dollars during January alone, over $200 million more than January 2017,  double that of the entirety of 2016, and several orders of magnitude greater than the years 2013, 2014 and 2015 combined. \n\nAre you paying attention? If so, you'll realize there's something missing - the entirety of 2018. \n\nJanuary 2018, the absolute peak of decentralized insanity, saw $2.14 billion dollars of capital poured in to ICO raises. That's $1.8 billion higher than 2019. Helped in part by the conclusion of the $4.1 billion EOS initial coin offering, and the Telegram ICO private pre-sale, the historic level of funding entering the blockchain space in January of 2018 was surpassed only by March and June of the same year. \n\nBut to view this as the death of the ICO market is shortsighted to say the least. Rather, it's a healthy return to 'normal', and discounting the mania and subsequent depressive slump that following the immense bull market of late 2017 - early 2018, the ICO market has experienced strong year on year growth. \n\nJust like the dot .com boom and bust, the years that followed saw healthy and steady increases in the most promising projects in internet technology. Today, we're seeing the same happening as the ICO markets mature. \n\nMost importantly, with a savvier blockchain investor base after the brutal bear market of 2018, in 2019 only those ICOs whose tokens have genuine utility are likely to gain traction. By comparison, of the 1082 ICOs which concluded in 2018, despite record breaking raises, many have failed to make it past the starting gate. \n\nSo, are ICOs dead in 2019?
