| title | Distributed governance for DAOs |
| body | 2019 will be the year of DAOs according to various crypto news outlets. DAO stands for Decentralized Autonomous Organization. This is a new form of software-based mechanisms for alining economic incentives over the internet by distributing risks and rewards among people that share a common goal but don’t necessarily know each other. The main idea behind DAOs is establishing organizations that can fully function without hierarchical management. A decentralized organization is run through rules encoded in smart contracts. It’s transaction record and programs rules are maintained on a blockchain. Several startups like Aragon, Colony, Otonomous are currently building the technology infrastructure allowing experimentation to take off with this new form of organization. Governance challenges arise with these new emerging entities without the traditional appointed directors and officers overseeing the business. The most well-known example of a DAO, confusingly called <i>The DAO</i>, showed us the risks and complexity of this innovation. In 2016 <i>The DAO </i>raised $168 million and was the largest crowdfunded venture capital fund ever. Unfortunately hackers were able to steal $50 million due to a bug in the code of the smart contract. Key governance issues to overcome are for instance the difficulty of coding smart contracts. Changes in code can’t be made once the smart contract is deployed. Additionally a free-rider problem could occur without the right incentives in place. This means that whenever the benefits of group action are collective, they will also be provided to the members of the group who make no contribution. Another area of concern is the fact that DAOs face regulatory risks. The legal status of this type of organization is still unclear. This also creates issues when decentralized entities wants to interact with a traditional ones. It is still early days for this technology. At the moment the main focus goes out to solving problems concerning security and legality through trial and error. The road ahead for 2019 will be bumpy and adventurous. | title | Year-end reading list on recent blockchain governance developments |
| body | Until recently governance concerns were perceived to be about the future. One could argue that 2018 was the year in which governance processes gained focus from the crypto community. As the industry matured projects found themselves having to address difficult governance issues. The <i>governance-by-default </i>approach of Bitcoin and Ethereum was put to the test. The realization kicked in that forking comes with high price to the community and network. New protocols like EOS and Tezos emerged which are on-chain systems with <i>governance-by-design</i>. These protocols showed their own set of problems like signs of collusion and manipulation. With growing interest of major financial institutions the importance of governance is evident. Clients of the institutions are more risk-averse than the current crypto players so clarity on governance is a key to gain confidence. Governance debates are heating up and will take blockchain systems to the next level. Governance debates are heating up and will take blockchain systems to the next level.\r\n\r\nFor further reading the following articles are recommended:\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://medium.com/amentum/blockchain-communities-and-their-emergent-governance-cfe5627dcf52\">https://medium.com/amentum/blockchain-communities-and-their-emergent-governance-cfe5627dcf52</a>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.tokendaily.co/blog/the-growing-focus-on-blockchain-governance\">https://www.tokendaily.co/blog/the-growing-focus-on-blockchain-governance</a>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://medium.com/alpineintel/on-governance-coordination-layers-and-structural-integrity-81a722ba1bc0\">https://medium.com/alpineintel/on-governance-coordination-layers-and-structural-integrity-81a722ba1bc0</a>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://medium.com/cryptolawreview/the-wood-zamfir-governance-debates-80e92436a457\">https://medium.com/cryptolawreview/the-wood-zamfir-governance-debates-80e92436a457</a>\r\n\r\n ",

| title | The ‘right to be forgotten’ on the blockchain |
| body | Blockchain is an immutable distributed database. It supports traceability and auditability and therefor makes blockchain trustworthy. As outlined in a previous blog post this same immutability may be at odds with the GDPR. Recently researchers from the University of New South Wales have come up with a solution to remove data from a blockchain without breaking the blockchain’s consistency. Memory Optimised Flexible Blockchain allows users to temporarily store, summarise or remove transactions from the blockchain. The links among blocks, through hash functions, are preserved if blocks are removed from the chain. The remaining trace of data which is its hash can still be used for verification in the future as long as the removed data is stored privately outside the blockchain. This approach to separate transaction and data flows can run on top of any existing blockchain. Moreover it is also beneficial for the reduction of blockchain storage requirements. | title | Off-chain vs On-chain Governance |
| body | A next generation of tokens is currently under development: security tokens. A new ecosystem is emerging fast and expectations are high. Security tokens are financial securities compliant with SEC regulations which means checkpoints as know-your-customer(KYC) and anti-money-laundering(AML) are applicable. Some experts believe that security token governance is a matter of bringing the results of existing regulatory and compliance mechanism on-chain.This means that the actual compliance validation happens off-chain and decisions are issued by single entities. However security tokens require more than simple compliance and validation. Consider all the sophisticated dividend distribution dynamics, voting and coordinations models that should be incorporated as well. Coordinating these dynamics off-chain is hard and will cause scalability issues. Certain mechanisms in security token transfers are relatively easy designed into smart contracts. Nonetheless many hurdles still need to be taken. Today programmable, on-chain governance only takes place on a token level but there are many scenarios imaginable in which this model is insufficient. The on-chain governance should enforce mechanics at different levels on the network. The current infrastructure is still in its nascent state. Security token governance will most likely evolve as a hybrid combination of off-chain and on-chain models. | title | What is a token, really? |
| body | Even though a great deal has been written about tokenomics, a mainstream definition of a token is not available. A crypto token is, first and foremost, a privately issued currency. Traditionally, governments issue currencies and set its terms and governance. With the development of blockchain, new types of organizations start issuing their own digital currency. They set their own terms and rules around its operations. In essence they create new self-sustainable mini-economies. A crypto token is a digital asset which, due to fundamental cryptographic techniques, can’t be double-spend. A token never exists in isolation but is a component of a distributed ledger system. The token layer is one of three system layers. The other components are the governance and technology layer, which are connected by the token. We distinguish three types of crypto tokens: cryptocurrency, utility and security tokens. A cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin and Monero, is a means of payment. It’s sole purpose is making or receiving payments on the blockchain. A utility token gives its holder a right to make use of certain digital services on the platform. Examples of utility tokens are Golem, that gives you access to computational power and Filecoin, that provides you with digital storages. When a crypto token derives its value from an external, tradable asset, it is classified as a security token. One of the main applications of security tokens is that they grant companies the ability to issue tokens that represent shares of a company. In practice, tokens often combine different functionalities and are so-called hybrid tokens. For this reason regulation on crypto tokens is complex and still considered a controversial subject. | title | Blockchain and the GDPR |
| body | With all the tumult around Facebook recently it hasn’t gone unnoticed that The EU General Data Protection Regulation will come into effect in a few weeks time. The GDPR will affect any company holding data relating to private EU citizens. It aims to give back control to citizens over their personal data and simplify the regulatory environment within the EU. Compliance is essential since penalties will be high. How does blockchain technology relate to the GDPR? At first glance, a blockchain seems in conflict with the individual rights of data protection and privacy held by EU citizen. Encrypted or hashed personal data and public keys stored on a blockchain are subject to the GDPR. Furthermore transactions on the blockchain are immutable so data can’t be deleted or modified which is contrary to the GDPR mandate for ‘the right for erasure’. The most obvious way to sidestep the GDPR is to store personal data off-chain and store a reference, a hash pointer, to this data on the blockchain. This workaround may find a need to reintroduce a trusted third party. A public key can’t be moved off-chain as it is an essential feature for transaction validation. With additional information such as a name or address, a public key can be attributed to a subject and is therefore considered pseudonymous. Public key compliance is more burdensome. Solutions for this problem are currently in development. You could, for instance, use stealth addresses or add noise to the data to obscure identification. As a rule, the law lags behind technological innovation. Both Blockchain technology and the GDPR share a common objective: data sovereignty. The EU data protection framework was designed for a society that collects, stores and processes data centrally. Blockchain technology breaks down these data silos and enables a decentralized method of storage and protection. We can conclude that a blockchain doesn’t support data sovereignty automatically and must be designed to do so to be GDPR-compliant. https://blockchaingovernance.nl Reference material: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3080322 https://medium.com/wearetheledger/the-blockchain-gdpr-paradox-fc51e663d047 |

| body | What makes blockchain such a transformative technology ? Authors Michael J. Casey and Paul Vigna encourages you to look beyond the wild speculation in the current crypto market. In the expository article *In blockchain we trust* they explain how this innovative technology is all about creating one priceless asset: trust. Blockchain technology is redefining our concept of trust and will transform the social infrastructure of our society. The current economic system’s cost of trust is extremely high and time-consuming. When we shift to a more decentralized economy many middlemen jobs will be made redundant. Michael J. Blockchain technology is redefining our concept of trust and will transform the social infrastructure of our society. The current economic system’s cost of trust is extremely high and time-consuming. When we shift to a more decentralized economy many middlemen jobs will be made redundant.\n\nMichael J. | title | To Blockchain or not to Blockchain |
| body | In our previous blog we established that a blockchain is a distributed ledger that records transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent manner without the need of a third party. It provides an integrity protected data storage and allows process transparency. This new technology brings solutions to a wide variety of present-day problems. Since the technology is in such an experimental phase we can not lay out a simple checkbox framework. Applications for blockchain technology are still in development. Nonetheless you should ask yourself several essential questions before getting started with blockchain. Firstly, do you need to store data for your project and are different parties involved? Blockchain is essentially similar to a shared database. Secondly, does your project with multiple entities involve a trusted third party? One of the key benefits of a blockchain is that it creates trust in a trustless environment. If a central authority is involved you may not find the need to construct trust in this innovative way. However you should be cautious with answering this question because a blockchain is also a great opportunity for disintermediation. Good reasons to get rid of an intermediary could be efficiency, lower costs and faster transactions. Lastly, you should consider the consensus mechanism. Who maintains the integrity over the ledger? In other words who are the transaction validators and why do you trust them? Various consensus mechanism have been put to real use so far and many more are still being developed. A relevant aspect is whether you want the transactions to be private or public. For example, Bitcoin was created to overcome the mistrust and non-transparency of financial institutions by making transaction data and validation publicly accessible. Answering the above questions can help you identify whether your project needs a blockchain. www.blockchaingovernance.nl Reference material: https://eprint.iacr.org/2017/375.pdf https://spectrum.ieee.org/computing/networks/do-you-need-a-blockchain https://medium.com/@sbmeunier/when-do-you-need-blockchain-decision-models-a5c40e7c9ba1 |

| body | Hype or not, a majority of the large companies worldwide are looking into the benefits of blockchain technology. So what is a blockchain? Many different definitions are thrown around the internet these days and that’s where the confusion starts. Blockchain technology is a key application of distributed ledger technology (also called DLT). Unfortunately some people use the terms blockchain and distributed ledger interchangeably. A distributed ledger is a special type of ledger in which transaction records are distributed and synchronised across a peer-to-peer network. A consensus algorithm is required to establish agreement among all the participants. Each participant in the network holds an identical copy of the ledger. Any changes or additions made to the ledger are reflected and copied to all participants. The security and accuracy of transactions are maintained by deploying cryptographic keys and signatures to control access and permissions in the shared ledger. This decentralized architecture eliminates the need of a central authority to keep control against fraud. A blockchain is a special type of distributed ledger and is essentially similar to a shared database. A key characteristic of a blockchain is that the data of transactions is timestamped and bundled into a block. Every block is linked together with a previous block using a cryptographic hash. This makes the data of transactions immutable and indelible. The most defining characteristic of a blockchain is the chosen consensus algorithm. This mechanism determines how participants reach consensus about the state of the ledger. Examples of various algorithms are Proof of Work, Proof of Stake and Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance. There is no single model for blockchain systems; different flavors have different levels of centralization. A blockchain can be public or private. Public blockchains are built to be accessible by anyone. Private blockchains operate with known participants in a trusted environment. Another crucial distinction to be made is whether a blockchain application is permissioned or permissionless. In the case of a permissionless blockchain all parties are free to read and write data to the blockchain. With a permissioned blockchain, on the contrary, access is restricted. It is extremely helpful to ask yourself in what category a blockchain operates. This can be public permissionless or permissioned on one the hand or private permissionless or permissioned on the other hand.
