      "body": "<html>\n<p>Installment 3 of my crypto currency mining experiment.</p>\n<p>The motherboard part of the rig connects all the components together. I like to think of it as the main torso of the computer.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>In the end I think a wide variety of motherboards would work for cryptocurrency mining. What really matters is being able to connect as many video cards (GPUs) as you want into the motherboard with PCI express (PCIe) connectors on the motherboard. The cards will not be directly connected to the motherboard but will be connected remotely through a PCI extender which can connect GPUs to both x1 and x16 PCI slots so what matters is the total number of available slots.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Many motherboards have 3 PCIe slots and if you are only looking for that number of GPUs one of those motherboards might be adequate. Some motherboards are built expressly for mining - with the distinguishing characteristic being a large number of PCI slots. For example the Asus B250 has 19 PCIe slots. A few more options are listed <a href=\"https://good-kingnews.com/technology/5-most-effective-motherboards-for-cryptocurrency-mining-2017/81866/\">here.</a>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>As this is an experiment for me at this point I don't want to commit to too many cards. It appears that 6 GPUs is a good number to run at this point. <a href=\"https://steemit.com/@mindminer\">Mindminer</a> recommended the Asus ROG MAXIMUS VIII HERO/Whetstone motherboard and I decided to go with it (with the Whetstone which as far as I can tell is a mouse pad). This is being replaced by an Alpha version. The Alpha version had a few upgrades but I didn't think they added much value for my purposes. In addition, getting parts that are not the cutting edge results in $avings. This is also primarily a gaming motherboard which will potentially ease getting rid of it if I determine mining is not viable for me. &nbsp;</p>\n<p>I honestly didn't put a whole lot of thought into the motherboard choice - 6 PCI slots, not a whole lot of money were my primary technical factors.&nbsp;</p>\n</html>",

It will work in the sense that I think there is software that will run on your iOS device but it won't work in the sense that it would really be profitable. In addition it would run the processor at 100% constantly. As a result it would have to be plugged in for long duration operation and would significantly stress the device as it heated up.",

I will write the blog entries as I investigate the various subjects.&nbsp;</p>\n<h2>Hardware&nbsp;</h2>\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Video Card </strong>- The computational engine (graphical process unit GPU) for generating the coins</li>\n  <li><strong>Motherboard</strong> - The circuitry that brings all the pieces together&nbsp;</li>\n  <li><strong>Processor</strong> - The central processing unit (CPU) that is more flexible than the GPUs and manages the OS</li>\n  <li><strong>Memory</strong> - Where active computations are stored (Note this is separate from the GPU memory)</li>\n  <li><strong>PCI Extender</strong> - Cabling and circuitry that allows multiple GPUs to be physically mounted away from the motherboard for cooling and space requirements</li>\n  <li><strong>Power Supply</strong> - Converts the 120 VAC from the wall socket into the lower DC voltages required by the computer's circuits</li>\n  <li><strong>Rack/Case</strong> - Holds and protects all the bits and pieces&nbsp;</li>\n  <li><strong>Hard Drive</strong> - Longer term storage of data than the memory</li>\n  <li><strong>Cooling</strong> - This thing will generate heat and that has to be managed</li>\n</ul>\n<h2>Software&nbsp;</h2>\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Operating system</strong> - The OS is software that manages the computer and provides interfaces for humans</li>\n  <li><strong>Drivers</strong> - This allows various components to work with the operating system. My primary concern with the drivers for the GPUs</li>\n  <li><strong>Tweaking software</strong> - The performance of processors can be pushed somewhat beyond their ratings by adjusting various parameters. This is software that assists with that process</li>\n  <li><strong>Mining software</strong> - This is the software applications that will actually perform the mining</li>\n  <li><strong>Remote monitoring</strong> - Due to the noise and heat I'm not planning on having the machine in my living space so I would like to be able to remotely manage it</li>\n</ul>\n<h2>Crypto Currency</h2>\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Choosing the crypto currency to mine</strong> - There are multiple currencies out there each with their own characteristics. So I was really looking for confirmation that I won't take too much of a performance hit but using Linux as opposed to Windows.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>I did the 'ol web search and read a few conversations on the topic of OS's and mining. I didn't spend a whole lot of time searching but I did find one blog post where lifipp wrote up their impressions in a more organized way than what often happens on a chat thread. You too can read this gem <a href=\"https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@lifipp/windows-vs-linux-which-one-is-better-for-mining-crypto-face-to-face-comparison \">here</a>. &nbsp;</p>\n<p>From my quick and dirty research I determined there isn't too much of a performance difference between the Windows and Linux versions. I suspect I might run into some more challenges with configuration with Linux and it will probably take a little longer. But, again, I am looking for that challenge so for me it isn't a cost.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>There appear to be Linux distributions dedicated to mining (some are listed &nbsp;<a href=\"http://linuxbsdos.com/2017/06/11/best-linux-distributions-for-mining-bitcoin-and-other-cryptocurrencies/\">here</a>). But I am interested in experimenting with running some other applications (such as a software defined radio) on the motherboard while mining. Supposedly the CPU doesn't have to work too hard to keep up with the GPUs so I'm going to see how much of a performance hit I may take by running something else.
