bodyThe future of waste management is the future of technology. Today’s paradigm in waste management is consumers purchase consumer items, use them a few times, then discard them in large bins. Occasionally, products are recycle, but usually they are carted off to a landfill. One in the landfill, waste emits methane, accounting for around 11 percent of global emissions (Environmental Protection Agency). Clearly, a new paradigm is needed in waste management. The Imagine 2050 report is daring to imagine the new paradigm (Brachlianof 3). Created by a waste management solutions company in the United Kingdom, it imagines a city efficient enough to thrive in the 21st century without lowering the standard of living. In their model, all waste is repurposed in the homes and businesses where it is consumed and recycled into the raw materials needed for producing more consumer goods. This economic model has been dubbed the “circular economy”. The tech covered in this report seems incredibly futuristic, but recent scientific advances make this report more than corporate marketing. Take the outlandish-sounding notion of nanobot recycling. Imagine 2050 claims that waste will be broken down at the molecular level by nanobots and then rebuilt. This sounds like a science fiction story, but, in fact, most of the technology already exists. Scientists at MIT have invented a way to harness artificial intelligence in the production of synthetic DNA compounds (Knight). This would allow almost unlimited application of bespoke DNA creations that recycle any waste product. TRecent advances in nanotechnology have increased the ability of nanobots to purify water, and to convert wastewater into energy. (Arundavi, et. al, 6). The Imagine 2050 conference proposes using these developments to create organic plastics and biofuels within the comfort of your own home. In fact, the most radical proposal in the Imagine 2050 conference is the complete decentralization of waste management. No longer will massive trucks haul off everything unwanted to some distant hole in the ground. Now, everything that can’t be automatically reused will be decomposed and recomposed by in-home processes. Recomposition will be handled by a process similar to that invented by scientists at Michigan Technological University and Aalto University in Finland. Researchers have built a system that uses 3D printing and an in-home plastic recycling machine to produce many common household goods. According to the article, this process uses half the energy of traditional manufacturing while producing goods for a few pennies. Increasingly sophisticated algorithms will determine the form and speed of this in-home waste management process. But, as any computer scientist can tell you, algorithms run on data. Although physical recycling may be accomplished in-home and at higher efficiency, the waste management crisis of 2050 will probably revolve around data (Pickren 1). Already, there are conflicts over who controls, can legally produce, and can legally dispose of, data. When everything is integrated into these efficient, environmentally friendly homes, the amount of data produced will be several multiples of ten more than we currently produce. We will have to manage this waste. After all, the Imagine 2050 report is not a guaranteed future. Maybe, through foreseen or unforeseen mishaps, we will not make the astounding, but attainable, technological breakthroughs to enable their vision of the future. Maybe waste will continue to be collected in trucks and carted to a big hole in the ground. And in that grim future, climate change will run amok and coastal cities will flood by century’s end. The future of waste management could be bright and futuristic, but it will require real humans working out real ethical and technological dilemmas before it can be attained.

bodyGURPS is an amazing role playing system, i'm sure you'll like. Be sure to remember it's very important to keep things on a certain level of reality (GMs and players) to be able to achieve real entertainment. I played by different conditions and it really sucked. And i'm not saying that it is forbidden, i have my good share of surreal campaigns and adventures, but it's important to feel you are really there with that exact universe in mind... It's either the player and the GM's responsibility. Posted using [Partiko Android](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.partiko.android)

bodyLhem villages are built for three things, or so the wisest sages say. Their foundations are in the stones of earth. Their life is in the strength of sea. And their beauty is in the power of the Guardian Tree. From these three things the Lhem derive their life and their existence. In retrospect, Amos realized that the sages were acknowledging that the Lhem really liked fishing. Still, every Lhem village built its houses out of local stone, all clustered about a massive Guardian Tree. And every morning, the Lhem went into their duvkanan and pulled fish from the sea. As he entered Dorkeno, he passed the docks where fishermen would soon be tying up. It was late afternoon. Huka had pushed them as hard as he thought they could handled, and the demands of summiting ridges and crossing a few estuaries had helped calm their grief. Amos looked at Victana. Her face was still drawn and sad. He doubted she would ever stop grieving completely, but at least now she could stand and appear somewhat normal. It was a wonder he could do the same. He had been in Dorkeno every spring to purchase rock salt from the Imperial merchants. Rock salt was superior for drying and curing fish to the pan salt harvested by the Lhem on the placid side of their peninsula. It ran counter to the Lhem ideal of self-sufficiency, but it enabled them to keep fish preserved without magic through the long winter. He knew they had entered Dorkeno proper when he felt a surge of magical energy on the edge of his consciousness. They had passed the sigils and entered the protection of Dorkeno's Guardian Tree. Magic floated in the ambient again. It was like drawing a deep breath after a long dive on the oyster beds, only in Amos' case it was like suddenly surfacing to find the composition of air every so slightly changed from when he dived. No one had ever fully understood how the Guardian Trees interacted, but it was known that they were networked and could act in unison. Certainly, the loss of such an old and prominent Guardian Tree as that of Lusketo had changed the ambient magic. The flavor of the magic was less complex, like a dish missing a spice. With a start, he realized that Dorkeno's Guardian Tree was grieving as well. "You look like you just realized that fish have scales," Victana said. They had been friends since as far back as they could both remember. She only pretended to be mean. He only pretended to be hurt. Now they were all each had in the world. "The Guardian Tree here knows about Lusketo," he said. "Of course it does," she said. "If whoever this giant outsider knows about it, all of Dorkeno must know." "No," Amos said, "it knows. About whatever that creature was that was poisoning the Guardian Tree. It knows. The magic here is afraid." "Magic is the force of life that emanates from everything that has lived or will live," Victana said, quoting their schoolmasters. "How can it be afraid?" "Magic is life," Amos said. "Life is afraid when it is faced with a powerful predator." "You speculate too much," Victana said. "Can't you feel it?" Amos asked. "It's like the sun is just a shade darker. Or like the moon forgot to rise, but just for a moment and then it rushed into the sky." "What I'm feeling," Victana said, "is the way everyone is staring at us." It was true. The fishing grounds were weak at this point in autumn, so only the most desperate or the most ambitious of the fishers were out. Most of those who could were lounging about, drinking seacha and staring. Most of them had the manners to pretend to be staring out to sea, or perhaps at a spot three or four feet beyond Victana or Amos, but everyone was staring. "They are very anxious to see you!" Huka said, with a booming laugh. "I wish they weren't," Victana said. They walked through the staring village until they reached the Council Seat under the leaves of the Guardian Tree. The entire Village Council was assembled there, shifting awkwardly in long, formal gowns of state. One of them, an older woman with a half smile on her face, stepped forward with both palms outward. She was tall for a Lhem, with lighter skin than usual and gray eyes betraying a distant origin from across the mountains. "My children," she said. "Welcome to Dorkeno. I am the Sorceno-Na of Dorkeno." Sorceno was an old word, used on as the title for the chief caretaker of the Guardian Tree of a village. She was also, presumably, the chief magic instructor for the village's children. Na was simply a generic word for a grandmother, but usually applied to a female Sorceno. "My Na," Amos said, "We come from Lusketo." He bent and kissed Na's outstretched palm. Victana did the same. "Dorkeno has heard the tragedy that has befallen Lusketo and offers you the full hospitality of all Dorkeno," said Na, smiling in perhaps too pitying a way, but her eyes were warm. "Thank you," Amos said. "We have no village and beg the protection of your Guardian Tree." "A scant protection in these times," said a younger man standing behind Na. He had a straw-colored beard and piercing blue eyes, both rarities among the Lhem. "Peace, Auguston," Na said. "We are at war," continued Auguston. "There is no war when one party chooses not to fight," said Na. "They have poisoned a Guardian Tree," said Auguston. "They?" said Na. "We have not even heard the story from the only survivors. Do not be so quick to judge." "Who else could it be but the Varenge?" demanded Auguston. "They were not Varenge," Victana said. The Varenge were the traditional enemies of the Lhem. They lived on the archipelagos off the coast of the Placid Peninsular and occasionally raided the shores of their neighbor. "How do you know?" demanded Auguston. "The magic was different," Amos said. "What does a boy know of magic differences?" demanded Auguston. "I've felt Varenge magic," Amos said. "Last year, when they sailed around the Placid. They chose not to raid us because our Guardian Tree was so old and powerful. Their magic tasted of salt and metal. Whatever killed our Guardian Tree was different." "What type of magic was it?" asked Na, sounding neutral and almost disinterested. Amos realized with a start that she was very subtly probing him for magical resonances. "You will find I am a sea-aligned mage," he said. "I have permissions primarily from small creatures of the surf and strand." "And something else, young one," Na said. "The ocean protected us during our flight from the attack," Amos said. "In exchange, I have sold a Lhem to its care. My child, in fact, but I have none." Na looked at Amos then, very hard. "My child," she said. "Do you wish to kill us all?"

"body": "Lhem villages are built for three things, or so the wisest sages say. Their foundations are in the stones of earth. Their life is in the strength of sea. And their beauty is in the power of the Guardian Tree. From these three things the Lhem derive their life and their existence.\n\nIn retrospect, Amos realized that the sages were acknowledging that the Lhem really liked fishing. It was a wonder he could do the same.\n\nHe had been in Dorkeno every spring to purchase rock salt from the Imperial merchants. Rock salt was superior for drying and curing fish to the pan salt harvested by the Lhem on the placid side of their peninsula. It ran counter to the Lhem ideal of self-sufficiency, but it enabled them to keep fish preserved without magic through the long winter. \n\nHe knew they had entered Dorkeno proper when he felt a surge of magical energy on the edge of his consciousness. With a start, he realized that Dorkeno's Guardian Tree was grieving as well.\n\n\"You look like you just realized that fish have scales,\" Victana said.\n\nThey had been friends since as far back as they could both remember. She only pretended to be mean. He only pretended to be hurt. Now they were all each had in the world.\n\n\"The Guardian Tree here knows about Lusketo,\" he said.\n\n\"Of course it does,\" she said. \"If whoever this giant outsider knows about it, all of Dorkeno must know.\"\n\n\"No,\" Amos said, \"it knows. About whatever that creature was that was poisoning the Guardian Tree. It knows. The magic here is afraid.\"\n\n\"Magic is the force of life that emanates from everything that has lived or will live,\" Victana said, quoting their schoolmasters. \"How can it be afraid?\"\n\n\"Magic is life,\" Amos said. \"Life is afraid when it is faced with a powerful predator.\"\n\n\"You speculate too much,\" Victana said.\n\n\"Can't you feel it?\" Amos asked. \"It's like the sun is just a shade darker. Or like the moon forgot to rise, but just for a moment and then it rushed into the sky.\"\n\n\"What I'm feeling,\" Victana said, \"is the way everyone is staring at us.\"\n\nIt was true. The fishing grounds were weak at this point in autumn, so only the most desperate or the most ambitious of the fishers were out. Most of those who could were lounging about, drinking seacha and staring. Most of them had the manners to pretend to be staring out to sea, or perhaps at a spot three or four feet beyond Victana or Amos, but everyone was staring.\n\n\"They are very anxious to see you!\" Huka said, with a booming laugh.\n\n\"I wish they weren't,\" Victana said.\n\nThey walked through the staring village until they reached the Council Seat under the leaves of the Guardian Tree. The entire Village Council was assembled there, shifting awkwardly in long, formal gowns of state. One of them, an older woman with a half smile on her face, stepped forward with both palms outward. She was tall for a Lhem, with lighter skin than usual and gray eyes betraying a distant origin from across the mountains.\n\n\"My children,\" she said. \"Welcome to Dorkeno. I am the Sorceno-Na of Dorkeno.\"\n\nSorceno was an old word, used on as the title for the chief caretaker of the Guardian Tree of a village. She was also, presumably, the chief magic instructor for the village's children. bodyI have an idea for a cryptocurrency. It would be a very large project and I know I don't have all of the skills required. Here is the general, big picture idea though. 1). Create a custom coin based on one of the existing Proof of Work algorithm (say at CryptoLife). This should be Proof of Work for the next couple of steps of this idea. 2). Embed QR codes in books. Acquiring a set number of QR codes from different books would allow you to start a Masternode for this coin (for the sake of reasonableness, let's say it's a random amount of pages into 5-6 books). You would have to search through those books (and, good heavens, even read them!) to obtain the required number of Starter Tokens. 3). Readers create Masternodes with easy-to-follow instructions in the back of the ebook. 4). Block rewards are divided between, just for example's sake, 50% to stakers/readers, 30% for the author(s), and 20% to charity. This would incentivize readers to purchase the initial book for a future reward. It would also build a reward into creating media for artists and writers. The Starter Tokens would require custom coding (not currently my expertise). There would have to be an editorial team who not only edit books, but also embed the QR codes. Perhaps they could also create Augmented Reality elements to the strategy as well, like solving puzzles or riddles to unlock Starter Tokens.

bodyVictana built a shelter against a rock. The storm had knocked branches onto the beach. The leaves created an adequate, if cold, barrier. She had managed to shelter them behind their fishing nets intertwined with branches. She didn't have blankets or heavier clothing for them to wear, but the nights were still warm enough that it didn't bother them too much. Amos tried to help, but he was working automatically. She directed in through lacing the branches in the net, through lighting their very small fire, then she helped him find a comfortable spot and let him sleep. She couldn't sleep. Everything had happened in such a short time period. Since the attack on the village, she had been fighting and running. Even on the duvkanan, she had kept herself ready should the magical shield falter. Now, she was on the solid ground and relatively safe. A cold knot had been burning in her stomach since she'd seen that face by the Guardian Tree, but now it leapt into her throat. She'd never been one for crying. Not that she avoided it, necessarily, but it did very little to relieve her distress. Other people had cried. She had always worked. But now her work was done and she had nowhere to go. A tiny tear trickled down her cheek. She poked at the fire as she swatted her tears away. "We're alone," she said. She had only seen a few summers. She was tired and scared and thrust into a world that had revealed some of its worst evil to her without exception or apology. That she feel sleep, her face buried in her arms, her knees drawn up to her face, is perhaps forgivable. She woke with a start when she heard an axe smack into wood. She went from exhausted slumber to jittery wakefulness instantaneously. Her belt knife was in her hand a mere heartbeat later. She sprang to her feet, and collapsed as her knees gave out. "Peace, child," said a hoarse male voice. "It's ok, Victana," said Amos, coming from somewhere to her right and very definitely not in the shelter. "He found us both asleep and has been watching over us all night." "That is not reassuring," Victana said. "You are Lhem," the male voice said. Victana raised her head. Her heart was beating from her collapse and now her head hurt. She was able to see a man dressed in leather tunic and leggings, a giant fur hung across his shoulders. "You're not," she said. "I'm not," the man said. He squatted down, his bearded face on a level with Victana. He was careful to maintain his distance, however. Victana still grasped her knife in her hand. "I'm Huka." "Hello, Huka," Victana said. "Do you always watch sleeping people?" "No," Huka said. "But I was asked to be on the lookout for survivors from the Raid on Lusketo. You are from Lusketo, correct?" "We..." Victana choked up. "I know you by your boat," Huka said. "Are there others?" Amos asked. "Other survivors, I mean." "Not that I have found!" Huka said. "You are my first!" He looked at the two Lhem, a smile on his face, before looking crestfallen. "I'm sorry for your loss." "Who asked you to look for survivors?" asked Victana. She was still gripping her knife. "The Great Council of Dorkeno," said Huka. "They employ me as a forester. Perhaps you have heard of them? They are also a Lhem village." Amos laughed a little. Dorkeno was the largest Lhem village, with a Guardian Tree over two thousand years old. It was the sole point of interaction for those who wished to leave Lhem lands and head over the mountains into the Central Provinces of the Imperial Republic. Some called it the capital of the Lhem, but that was a misnomer. Each Lhem village belonged to itself. "Did it happen anywhere else?" Amos asked. "The attack, you know, like happened to our village?" Victana noted that he avoided saying their families. She realized with a gulp that she would not have been able to say it either. "It would seem that whatever happened in Lusketo, was unique to Lusketo!" Huka said. "Are you feeling able to stand, woman who falls on the ground? If we are strong and persist, we can reach Dorkeno before nightfall." "I can walk," Victana said, scrambling to her feet. "I was surprised when you woke me, is all." "I have prepared waycakes!" said Huka, gesturing to a fire he had built fifty feet from her shelter. Victana realized that her last few dreams had, in fact, been filled with the smell of baking. The surprise of waking to a man dressed entirely in the skins of animals had made her ignore her rumbling stomach, but now she also realized she was deeply hungry. "Let's eat," she said. "Then, lead us to Dorkeno, Huka the Forester."

"body": "Victana built a shelter against a rock. She directed in through lacing the branches in the net, through lighting their very small fire, then she helped him find a comfortable spot and let him sleep.\n\nShe couldn't sleep. \n\nShe'd never been one for crying. Not that she avoided it, necessarily, but it did very little to relieve her distress. Other people had cried. She had always worked. \n\nBut now her work was done and she had nowhere to go. A tiny tear trickled down her cheek. She poked at the fire as she swatted her tears away.\n\n\"We're alone,\" she said. \n\nShe had only seen a few summers. She was tired and scared and thrust into a world that had revealed some of its worst evil to her without exception or apology. That she feel sleep, her face buried in her arms, her knees drawn up to her face, is perhaps forgivable.\n\nShe woke with a start when she heard an axe smack into wood. She went from exhausted slumber to jittery wakefulness instantaneously. Her belt knife was in her hand a mere heartbeat later. She sprang to her feet, and collapsed as her knees gave out.\n\n\"Peace, child,\" said a hoarse male voice.\n\n\"It's ok, Victana,\" said Amos, coming from somewhere to her right and very definitely not in the shelter. \"He found us both asleep and has been watching over us all night.\"\n\n\"That is not reassuring,\" Victana said.\n\n\"You are Lhem,\" the male voice said.\n\nVictana raised her head. Her heart was beating from her collapse and now her head hurt. She was able to see a man dressed in leather tunic and leggings, a giant fur hung across his shoulders.\n\n\"You're not,\" she said.\n\n\"I'm not,\" the man said. He squatted down, his bearded face on a level with Victana. He was careful to maintain his distance, however. Victana still grasped her knife in her hand. \"I'm Huka.\"\n\n\"Hello, Huka,\" Victana said. \"Do you always watch sleeping people?\"\n\n\"No,\" Huka said. \"But I was asked to be on the lookout for survivors from the Raid on Lusketo. You are from Lusketo, correct?\"\n\n\"We...\" Victana choked up.\n\n\"I know you by your boat,\" Huka said.\n\n\"Are there others?\" Amos asked. \"Other survivors, I mean.\"\n\n\"Not that I have found!\" Huka said. \"You are my first!\" He looked at the two Lhem, a smile on his face, before looking crestfallen. \"I'm sorry for your loss.\"\n\n\"Who asked you to look for survivors?\" asked Victana. She was still gripping her knife.\n\n\"The Great Council of Dorkeno,\" said Huka. \"They employ me as a forester. Perhaps you have heard of them? They are also a Lhem village.\"\n\nAmos laughed a little. Each Lhem village belonged to itself.\n\n\"Did it happen anywhere else?\" Amos asked. \"The attack, you know, like happened to our village?\"\n\nVictana noted that he avoided saying their families. She realized with a gulp that she would not have been able to say it either.\n\n\"It would seem that whatever happened in Lusketo, was unique to Lusketo!\" Huka said. \"Are you feeling able to stand, woman who falls on the ground? If we are strong and persist, we can reach Dorkeno before nightfall.\"\n\n\"I can walk,\" Victana said, scrambling to her feet. \"I was surprised when you woke me, is all.\"\n\n\"I have prepared waycakes!\" said Huka, gesturing to a fire he had built fifty feet from her shelter. bodyThe duvkanan ground ashore sometime after the storm stopped. It was the night of some day, but Victana had no idea how many days had passed. Their food was almost gone, but Amos hadn't been eating very much. In fact, he had sort of lulled in their magical bubble, barely moving. Occasionally he broke out into half-articulated thoughts, guttering out before he reached most verbs. The moon was a very dully, clouded yellow. The stars were still hiding behind the retreating storm clouds. Victana had tried sleeping fitfully, but all she gained for her attempts was a sore back and a generally grumpy disposition. "Help me pull the boat up," she said. She was sloshing in the surf. Amos still lulled in the duvkanan. "We're all alone," he said. "Yes," she said. "And we are going to die if we don't get out of this boat. The ocean never promised to protect us from the rocks." Amos managed to wrap his legs around the gunwales and fall, unceremoniously, into the spray. A break flung him up onto the strand, where he lay. "You're useless," Victana said. "Sorry," he muttered. "It's taking all my magic just to keep myself alive." "What are you even talking about?" Victana asked. She'd pulled the duvkanan far enough up the shore to not lose it at high tide. Now she was pulling what little gear they had stowed in the craft and arranging it on the beach. "The Guardian Tree was our source of power," Amos said. "We...existed because it fed us. Now it's gone and I am...hungry." "If that's true, why aren't I feeling it?" she asked. "You will," said Amos. "I never believed all that nonsense," said Victana. "About our connection to the Guardian Tree. I walked past that old stump every day for my entire life and I never felt anything." "It is our life," said Amos. "Well, it's dead and we're not," said Victana. "I think we need to keep going. Lulling about on the beach won't help." "I can't move," Amos said. "You will," Victana said. She stomped over to him and grasped him under the shoulders. He didn't resist, but he barely helped as she pulled him up. "We're alive," she said. "And we have to keep going." "I feel so empty inside," Amos said. "So do I," Victana said. "But that shouldn't stop us." "I just don't want to go on," Amos said. And he collapsed back to the sand. "I'm not giving you an option!" Victana said, pulling him to his feet again. "They're dead," Amos said. "We're not," said Victana. Amos sighed. He looked down at the ground and shifted a shell with his toe. "I don't want to be alone," he said. "We don't have a choice," Victana said. "We've got to move, though. That storm is coming back." Amos sighed again. "I'm not ready to be alone," he said. "Neither am I," said Victana. "Help me drag this stuff up to that stand of trees. I'll try to rig up a shelter."

body"I found permission," Amos said. He was still lying in keel, heaving great guffs of breath. The ocean was rising into a storm all around them. "Ask the ocean to calm itself down!" Victana said. "I did," Amos said. "It said we won't sink." "Did you mention that we might get sick?" Victana asked. "I don't think that was particularly important," Amos said. "It also is protecting us from whatever that thing back in the village keeps on throwing at us." "So we're safe," Victana said. "From drowning." "I would say we're safe from the storm drowning us," Amos said. "The ocean wishes to remind you that we can still drown if we're bad sailors." "I intend on doing my part," said Victana. "What price did the Ocean demand?" Amos grimaced. "Just tell me," Victana said. "Our first born child," Amos said. "How fortunate we're never going to have one," said Victana. "In that case," Amos said, "possession of our soul after death." "What a demanding ocean!" said Victana. The storm was still raging outside of the duvkanan, but the little craft was barely bobbing in the surf. Apparently the ocean was more conscientious of their stomachs than it had let on. "Where are we going?" Amos asked. "Does it matter?" Victana asked. "There's a storm all around us, our village burnt down, and we're alone in the world." "We're alone," said Amos. He was able to sit up now. They looked out from their bubble of calm at the raging storm. Lightning crashed and great waves crashed around them. The sky was pitch dark. Victana could see no landmarks to steer by and had stopped even paddling. "We're alone," Victana repeated. "What do we do?" Amos shook his head. "How does something kill a Guardian Tree?" he asked. "Maybe everyone isn't gone," Victana said. "We didn't see everyone who was..." her voice trailed off. She flicked her paddled in the water. "Who was dead," Amos said. "They're all dead, Victana. I saw their shades. They were hovering over the dying Guardian Tree." "Did you see my mom?" Victana asked. He nodded. "And everyone else," he said. She put her hand on his knee. With the duvkanan rocking in the water, she couldn't get closer to him. "We're the last from our village," he said. "And we're stuck on the ocean."
