| body | Thank you for sharing this. I personally hate clutter because it stresses me out but yet I still allow it to exist in my life. I don’t have a garage or basement full of unused forgotten items but I have drawers and boxes and closests full of I and it seems to keep growing little by little. I like that you mentioned having to change our mindset before you can find true success with decluttering. I totally agree! I believe any lifestyle change we try to implement must start with a perspective and mindset change. I also like that you had set specific rules for yourself to follow before making any new purchases. When we have a set of guidelines to consider before making certain decisions it forces us to take a step back and make sure we are making a wise choice. Keep up the good work! You’ve inspired me to start my own journey towards declusttering my life and mind. |

| author | chrislapointe |
| body | Clutter, it seems, is now part of a larger social problem. It is not only an issue for people described as "hoarders", but is afflicting many on a broader scale. A recent report sheds light on the problem in general by comparing house sizes from the 1950's to today. They go into details explaining that homes used to be smaller in size and would have more occupants (larger families inhabiting them). Compared to how now, as a side effect of a growing consumer market, builders have had to adjust by creating larger houses that would not only have less occupants, but essentially be mostly used for storage. We even have a growing business sector that specializes in storage space so that people can have extra room outside of their homes for their possessions. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sitting on top of my pedestal looking down. Quite on the contrary, I'm right in there with those who find themselves in this situation. I definitely have had trouble letting go of "stuff" in the past, to the point where both my basement and garage have literally been designated as storage space. Forget about parking the car, I need to park my other possessions that I know I barely use. You might now be asking yourself "What's the point of this post Chris?". In a recent effort to simplify and reorganize my life, I have been slowly getting rid of many of my possessions. This clean up is a long process that I am undertaking as a means of moving on from the old but also to prepare a new future where I am spending less time and money on material things that I end up not using. As I make my way through all theses things, I have been spending time wondering if just getting rid of stuff would be enough to stop the cycle. Can it be as easy as that? My impressions at first were, yes of course. But now, I think a second phase needs to occur. *Decluttering the mind*. You can get rid of things by throwing them out, recycling them or even reselling them. But, if you don't fundamentally change your mindset, you will be doomed to repeat your previous habits. And it'll happen without you even noticing it. As an example, let's take one of the items I'll be getting rid of - a printer. Why am I getting rid of it? Because I bought a newer one a few months back with new features that I preferred. The old printer was also giving me trouble with installation with my new operating software. When I was younger, I would've performed troubleshooting for days in order to get it working. Now, my time priorities have shifted to spending that time with my kids. I did what most people will do, find an easier solution. But why did I keep the old printer? In case I find a solution in the future, I could use it. Problem is, I never did and that printer is in my basement collecting dust. And there lies the main issue. I have to recognize this thought pattern and make sure I don't repeat this in the future, or I risk finding myself spending a lot of time, once again, sifting through all too many possessions in an all too familiar setting. I started to force myself to rethink how I spend my money on products. Things essential to life (like food, clothing) will be purchased without much of a thought. When it comes to non-essentials, that's where I stop and think "Will I ever use this, or is the idea of owning it ruling my desire to buy it?". If the answer is "yes I will get use out of it", I also force myself to think if I have another version of it at home that is either not getting the use it deserves or fulfilling my needs in it's current form. If I own one that's not getting used, there's no point in spending money on something else that will not get enough use. If I am getting enough use of the one I already own, will replacing it with a newer version be worth the expense? At this point, if I determine that the new version with be worth the expense, I then resolve to sell/give the product I currently own. The actual purchase of the new product will not take place until I get rid of the old one. It's been a process, but it is taking root. I think less and less about buying things knowing that there's a whole array of questions and answers that need to take place prior. I have essentially found a way to declutter my mind of excessive thoughts of consumption, which has the added benefit of helping me keep physical clutter down in my life. So, can I change in such a way that others will be able to *reproduce my results and successes* in their own **lives**? The reason I'm not sure it will work for everyone is mainly because it is a concept that produces a negative response instead of a positive one. I dissuade myself from buying something because of what I need to do to allow such a purchase to take place. Maybe one day I'll find a more positive approach to it all, but for now, I make it work. "body": "\n\nClutter, it seems, is now part of a larger social problem. It is not only an issue for people described as \"hoarders\", but is afflicting many on a broader scale. We even have a growing business sector that specializes in storage space so that people can have extra room outside of their homes for their possessions.\n\nDon't get me wrong, I'm not sitting on top of my pedestal looking down. Quite on the contrary, I'm right in there with those who find themselves in this situation. I definitely have had trouble letting go of \"stuff\" in the past, to the point where both my basement and garage have literally been designated as storage space. Forget about parking the car, I need to park my other possessions that I know I barely use. You might now be asking yourself \"What's the point of this post Chris?\". But now, I think a second phase needs to occur.\n\n*Decluttering the mind*. And there lies the main issue. | body | Well, it seems that my wifi wasn't cooperating yesterday, so today you are getting two posts from me. Let's call it keeping pace with my attempt at creating a new habit. I've got to say, I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan. It started back when I was 4 heavily influenced by my cousins who seemed to own every Star Wars figure produced in the '70s and '80s and who often loved watching the movies. It was so neat being able to make my own Star Wars storylines with these toys and using cardboard boxes to make buildings for the figurines. I was hooked!! Fast forwards a few years and just as I was starting to want more Star Wards content, books were being published about all my favourites (Luke, Leia, Han, Chewy, R2 and to a lesser extent 3PO) and my imagination was going wild! Then, my biggest dream came true: George Lucas announced new movies, prequels to the ones that he had made years before, that would complete the Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader storyline. (Just to show how steeped into our collective culture Star Wars is, I wrote Drath and the computer asked me to check my spelling, but Darth is ok). So many people were disappointed with Episode 1,2 and 3. But not me. This was it. The definitive vision George Lucas had for his creation. I saw some great new vistas, aliens and plenty of futuristic looking vehicles, devices and weapons. But most importantly, it answered quite a few questions I had regarding how the Empire came to be and gave an insight into the Jedi council and it's role. You start Episode 4 and see Darth Vader for the first time and you want to know his origin story and there it is set in a trilogy of movies. I was in Star Wars heaven. A few years ago, I learned that Disney has made an offer to buy Lucasfilms and many of it's smaller companies. Knowing that George Lucas was older, and probably not looking at making more movies, I was cautiously optimistic. This could be a great way for the Star Wars universe to live on. George Lucas even said that he never expected Star Wars to live on after his death. This could be the answer. When Episode 7 was in production, there was so much hoopla surrounding it that I cut myself off from anything that could possibly give me more information about the story and the characters which would in turn ruin the movie experience. Even in my Facebook feed I would remove anything related to it. When the movie came out, I had very little information about it going in. The most I had allowed myself to do is watch a few trailers and a few actor interviews (like Harrison Ford on The Late Show) knowing there wouldn't be spoilers. I watched the movie with a certain degree of awe as the text scrolled on the screen and the John Williams score belted out of every speaker in the theatre. The very first scene caught my attention right away. So secretive at first and then it turned so explosive! Wow! Then, we find ourselves on what seems to be an arid, desert like planet. We are introduced to a young woman who has no idea of the destiny that lies ahead of her. My reaction to all this was "Aw, man... I'm watching Episode 4..." and thus my dreams of something bigger were dashed. Not to say that I wasn't entertained. I definitely got bang for my buck as far as the story goes. It's just that I'd paid to see that story a long time ago in a galaxy far away. Knowing what JJ Abrams was all about (after seeing his reboot of the Star Trek universe), I was thinking to myself that this could be him setting up the other two movies. Maybe it's his way of connecting the viewers to the original movies so that things don't seem so out of place for what's to come. And then, I saw The Last Jedi. From this point on I can't seem to shake the feeling that these three movies are strictly about Disney trying to recoup the cost of buying Lucasfilm and very little (if nothing at all) about the fate of the galactic heroes from Episode 6. Allow me to explain. Just as the movie starts, we find ourselves watching the New Order (read Imperial) fleet arriving at the location of the Resistance (read Rebels) as they are evacuating their base. Sound familiar? That's because it's pretty much the exact opening sequence of The Empire Strikes Back. The biggest difference? In Empire, "the first transport is away" as the fleet arrives in the Hot system. In Last Jedi, it's the last transport. We are also brought back to the end of The Force Awakens with Rey and Luke facing each other. Luke, who had exiled himself on a hard to find and remote planet, is now much older and in no mood to teach a student the ways of the force but is somehow talked into it by an old friend. Can you tell where I'm going with this? Throughout those scenes I'm constantly reminded of Yoda, Dagobah and Obi-Wan's ghostly form. Last Jedi even has it's own version of "the failure at the cave". And of course, we find our young brash hero heading off to face her dark side nemesis with incomplete training. Kylo Ren (aka Ben Solo) fails, just like Vader did, to turn the hero of our story to the dark side. The slight deviations are the throne room scene that happened in Return is now in the middle movie and the Rebels stand inside their base happens at the end while the last stand inside of Echo base happened at the beginning (but even then, your first glance at the large door of the base and it's surrounding looks like Hoth until they tell you it's salt and not snow). All in all, people are still going out to see these movies, but what's even better for Disney's bottom line is that merchandise sales are bringing in, from the latest tallies I've seen, triple the money that worldwide ticket sales have. And who knows, since so much of Return is found in Last Jedi, maybe they'll put out something original and fresh in the last and final instalment (as announced by Disney) in the Skywalker saga. Hahahahaha.... Who am I kidding? |

| body | Wow! What is going on this week? I can't believe how many people, from pundits to reporters to people with opinions, are going crazy over the possibility of Oprah running for president in 2020. (In case you don't know what I'm talking about, here's the link to the full speech on YouTube https://youtu.be/fN5HV79_8B8) But, let me save you some time. The part that seems to steer this conversation is when she speaks of better days ahead. Put that into the context of her acceptance of the Cecile B DeMile award and being the first black woman to receive it and you have a "perfect storm" if you will. Is she alluding that she will run? Does she have her eyes on the White House? If you follow US politics, whether it be attentively or just in passing to stay informed, you'll know of the recent upsets in several elections. Seems that many citizens have been going to the polls and voting Democrat. Maybe it's a backlash for what's been going on in Washington of late or maybe it's because so many are sick of the status quo and are looking for change. All I can say for sure from what I've observed is that the times, they are a changing. More and more people are fighting back for what they believe is right, from women (and some men) outing people in power for sexual assault to others not standing for a man who stood accused by many women for inappropriate behaviour towards minors (ie: Roy Moore). And that is what I felt was being echoed in Oprah's acceptance speech at the Golden Globes. A lot of people out there are attributing the recent Democratic win in Alabama to black women voters who seem to have worked hard to get the vote out. They did not want to have someone who was apparently banned from the mall in his town due to his behaviour towards young girls as their Senator. So many people would love to see Oprah on the Democratic ticket take on the Republican nominee (I say possibly Trump as he was recently quoted as being on the fence for seeking reelection) in 2020. At the end of the day, she didn't outright say so. It doesn't mean it's off the table, but instead of getting all riled up about this, I do think more focus needs to be on the upcoming mid-terms and how they could possibly change the political landscape on the Hill. |

"body": "Wow! What is going on this week? I can't believe how many people, from pundits to reporters to people with opinions, are going crazy over the possibility of Oprah running for president in 2020. (In case you don't know what I'm talking about, here's the link to the full speech on YouTube https://youtu.be/fN5HV79_8B8)\n\nBut, let me save you some time. The part that seems to steer this conversation is when she speaks of better days ahead. Put that into the context of her acceptance of the Cecile B DeMile award and being the first black woman to receive it and you have a \"perfect storm\" if you will. Is she alluding that she will run? Does she have her eyes on the White House?\n\nIf you follow US politics, whether it be attentively or just in passing to stay informed, you'll know of the recent upsets in several elections.
