I'd say commit to two minutes a day for a week, then build it up to two weeks, then a month, and once you've built the habit, you can start trying longer session. I follow some of these same habits (e.g., working out, keto-style diet, getting good sleep, and making a habit of writing every morning). \n\nI picked up that last one from your podcast. You mentioned that the first thing you do when you wake up is write down ideas in a flow (before you even have your coffee). So, now I sit down with my journal and capture as many creative ideas as I can, make notes about article topics, jot down ideas for my book, etc. \n\nI've tried meditation before, without success. But, I know that it works really well for many people. I should try again.",

Our focus was on mobile app development, including a micro-podcasting app (Voicekick) and a video marketing app (Pearl).</p>\n<p>Before that, I was a product and design executive with over 18 years of experience designing, defining, and building consumer products at a number of technology and internet companies in Silicon Valley; including Apple Computer, Yahoo, eBay, and IBM. Most recently, I was the Vice President of Consumer Products for&nbsp;<strong>Yahoo! Search</strong>, leading a wonderful team of product managers, designers, and developers who were focused on creating world-class Search experiences to compete with Google and Bing.</p>\n<p>I began my career at&nbsp;<strong>IBM's Santa Teresa Laboratory</strong>&nbsp;while in the graduate program at Rice University in Texas, designing database and development tools. I returned to Rice to complete my doctorate and soon after had the opportunity to move to the Bay area to work as a designer for&nbsp;<strong>Apple Computer</strong>, where I worked on the Finder for Mac OS 8, OS 9, and OS X, as well as Internationalization and Localization software.</p>\n<p>After many memorable years at Apple, I left to join a number of ex-Apple and ex-Sun folks at a startup (Ridge Technologies) during the infamous Silicon Valley&nbsp;<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dot-com_bubble\"><em>Boom</em></a>. After a couple of acquisitions, spin-outs, and restarts; I founded MindSpan Design, an interaction design agency, where I worked on desktop, web, and mobile solutions for a variety of startups &nbsp;for several years until the&nbsp;<a href=\"http://www.investopedia.com/features/crashes/crashes8.asp\"><em>Bust</em></a>. Then, I joined&nbsp;<strong>eBay</strong>&nbsp;to lead a really great team focused on multiple products for vertical shopping experiences (e.g., eBay Motors, Half.com, Kijiji), platform solutions, and eBay's international sites. This included moving to Shanghai, China to work with the local team to define and launch several new products and help optimize the Product and Design organization.</p>\n<p>I received my&nbsp;<strong>Ph.D. in Psychology from Rice University</strong>&nbsp;with an emphasis on Human Factors and Human-Computer Interaction. While there, I designed and developed a coaching system for training software users to become more effective and efficient in their daily usage of productivity software (<a href=\"http://scholarship.rice.edu/handle/1911/19143\">Dissertation</a>). I hold&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.brilliantforge.com/larry-cornett-patents/\">a number of patents</a>, which include design work on web-based products and hardware solutions.</p>\n</html>",

      "body": "<html>\n<p>Ah, the delicate balance of <strong>confidence and humility</strong>.</p>\n<h1>Leadership Traits</h1>\n<p>You’ll often see <a href=\"https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/249703\">traits</a> listed for great leaders that include a lot of “power” behaviors. Being confident, decisive, and taking charge. But, then you’ll see humility listed as well.</p>\n<p>It varies by <a href=\"http://web.uri.edu/iaics/files/10-Sanae-Tsuda.pdf\">culture</a> (and perhaps <a href=\"http://www.marketwatch.com/story/3-professions-with-the-most-arrogant-workers-2016-09-01\">occupation</a>), but we sure do send mixed messages!</p>\n<ul>\n  <li><em>Seize the day,</em> <em><strong>but</strong></em> <em>good things come to those who wait.</em></li>\n  <li><em>The meek shall inherit the earth,</em> <em><strong>but</strong></em> <em>only the strong survive.</em></li>\n  <li><em>Proudly be yourself,</em> <em><strong>but</strong></em> <em>the nail that stands up is hammered down.</em></li>\n  <li><em>Build a personal brand,</em> <em><strong>but</strong></em> <em>don’t blow your own horn.</em></li>\n</ul>\n<p>After <a href=\"https://www.brilliantforge.com/about-brilliant-forge/\">decades</a> of observing who gets promoted, the careers that tend to skyrocket, and who succeeds in business, I think those who do not move up have often <strong>erred on the humble side of caution</strong>.</p>\n<h1>Cultural Differences</h1>\n<p>I was raised in a <a href=\"http://venturebeat.com/2014/08/27/heres-what-silicon-valley-can-learn-from-good-old-midwestern-values/\">culture</a> that told me to work hard, do good work, and it would be recognized. But, that’s only true to a certain extent. And, it assumes an enlightened and observant boss.</p>\n<p>I have observed way too many talented people <a href=\"http://www.leadingwomen.biz/blog/bid/72794/Leadership-Lessons-Invisibility-Humility-and-Self-Promotion\">lagging behind in their careers </a>relative to people who were less talented, yet better at promoting their work and getting noticed. There are too many bosses that are happy to get great work out of humble people who don’t dare to ask for raises or promotions.</p>\n<p><strong>It’s about finding a balance, of course.</strong> You don’t want to be seen as a bragging, arrogant, self-promotional jerk. <strong>But</strong>, you also don’t want to just sit back and hope that your great work will be noticed.</p>\n<h1>Finding a&nbsp;Balance</h1>\n<p><strong>The best way that I can describe that balance is to</strong> <strong>be personally humble, yet confident and proud of your work.</strong></p>\n<p>Promote the work, what you can do, and how you can help others, vs. promoting yourself.</p>\n<p>Find ways to highlight what you are doing so that it is clearly noticed.</p>\n<p>Always give credit where credit is due though, which means that you clearly call out the team and all contributors.</p>\n<p>Take opportunities to write and speak, so that people can get to know you.</p>\n<h1>Be Visible</h1>\n<p>In the end, <strong>it may really be about visibility</strong>.       "body": "<html>\n<p><img src=\"https://www.brilliantforge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/black-white-old-time-singer-crowd-bad-public-speaking.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\"/></p>\n<p>What techniques do you use to <strong>overcome your fear of public speaking</strong> and boost your self-confidence before an important meeting, presentation, talk, etc.?</p>\n<p>For most of my life, I used to <strong>fear and hate</strong> public speaking.</p>\n<p>Getting up in front of people to talk? No thanks!</p>\n<p>But, I actually enjoy it now. No, seriously I do.</p>\n<p>I find it easier to get up in front of an audience to speak than to try to make small talk with people at networking events. Maybe someday I will come to enjoy that as well. But, for now, it’s not my thing. Large audiences or 1-on-1 are much easier for me.</p>\n<p>So, <strong>why does this matter</strong>? Why should you care about becoming comfortable with public speaking?</p>\n<p>I know that overcoming my fear and becoming proficient at public speaking <strong>boosted my career</strong>. Quite simply, I never would have advanced as far in my career as I did, if I was not able to get up in front of a room full of colleagues and present to them. Presenting at conferences and interviewing with the media increased my visibility and <strong>built my personal brand</strong>. Practice, practice, practice helped me overcome the anxiety of public speaking and made it much easier for me to <strong>present to angel investors</strong> when I was raising money for my startup.</p>\n<p>If you want your career to take off, learn how to speak and present with confidence.</p>\n<p>If you want to build your own business, you had better become very comfortable with speaking to potential customers, partners, and investors.</p>\n<p>If you want to remain right where you are, never get promoted, and never become a successful entrepreneur, then sit down, close your mouth, and never speak up or take the stage.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Buffett\">Warren Buffett</a> once told a class of business students that he would pay anyone in the room $100,000 for 10% of their future earnings. If they were good communicators, <strong>he would raise his bid by 50% because public speaking would make his ‘investment’ more valuable</strong> (<a href=\"http://www.forbes.com/sites/carminegallo/2013/12/27/one-skill-that-will-boost-your-value-by-fifty-percent-in-2014/#fcd40331eabf\">source</a>).</p>\n<p>If you are interested in changing your life and skyrocketing your career, here are the <strong>top 3 techniques </strong>that I’ve used to overcome my <strong>fear of public speaking</strong> and actually find a way to enjoy it:</p>\n<h1><strong>Training in public&nbsp;speaking</strong></h1>\n<p><img src=\"https://www.brilliantforge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/larry-cornett-public-speaking-airbnb-talk-300x300.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"/></p>\n<p>Never pass up a good opportunity to present and speak in front of an audience</p>\n<ul>\n  <li>I’ve taken a few courses/workshops on public speaking. One was just for more general speaking. A few were for larger audience presentations and dealing with the media. All were very useful.</li>\n  <li><strong>First</strong>, it gives you much needed practice.</li>\n  <li><strong>Second</strong>, it teaches you the importance of owning your talk and practice, practice, practice.</li>\n  <li><strong>Finally</strong>, it teaches you techniques for managing the audience, answering questions, handling challenging questions from the media, etc. Basically, what do do in those worst case scenarios. Once you know that, you feel more comfortable about handling what gets thrown at you.</li>\n</ul>\n<h1><strong>Ready for this?&nbsp;Karaoke</strong></h1>\n<p><img src=\"https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1440/0*--6LJtRnnawVYog0.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"/></p>\n<ul>\n  <li>Yes, I said <a href=\"https://www.flickr.com/gp/madrone/x6x4yu\">karaoke</a>. My previous colleagues know exactly what I’m talking about. They were there when I was introduced to karaoke clubs while I was <a href=\"https://www.flickr.com/gp/madrone/f14Z71\">living in China</a>.</li>\n  <li>Talk about combining your worst fears into one swirling, whirling mass of anxiety. Getting up in front of people. Public speaking. And worse, actually trying to sing in front of an audience with a mic in your hand. Wow. Yeah, it’s overwhelming.</li>\n  <li>But, I think that is what made me break through it all. It’s kind of the same as phobia treatment. Fear spiders? Play with a big tarantula. Fear snakes? Wrap one around your neck. It is such a sensory overload that you never fear just speaking in front of an audience again. You’ve already made the biggest fool of yourself that you could imagine.</li>\n  <li>I’ll be honest, perhaps drinking a bit helped too. But, I don’t recommend taking shots right before an important presentation.</li>\n  <li>But, from that point forward, giving a presentation seemed tame compared to singing in front of people.</li>\n</ul>\n<h1><strong>Acting</strong></h1>\n<p><img src=\"https://www.brilliantforge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/old-acting-400x400.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"/></p>\n<p>Basically, my on-stage persona isn’t me.</p>\n<ul>\n  <li>I take on a role when I’m in front of a large audience. I embrace it. My persona loves the spotlight. My persona enjoys interacting with the audience and getting them to laugh.</li>\n  <li>The separation of self from this acting persona helps remove the anxiety from the situation. It’s not “me” up there. It’s “him”. If he bombs, it wasn’t me that bombed.</li>\n  <li>I know that sounds a little like having Dissociative identity disorder. But, it’s just acting.</li>\n  <li>Do you think those folks in Hollywood are really like the characters in their movies? Nope, and you don’t have to be either.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>So there you have it. This is <strong>how I overcame decades of fear of public speaking</strong>. For those that know me, you know that I love being on stage now. You’ve teased me about it. But, this is how I did it. So, try it out for yourself. Heck, you could even invite me to come do karaoke with you.
