| body | ...makes me deeply surprised at how different my definition of "ambitious" is compared to others. The new Facebook, fastest payments, truly private chat, decentralised rentals... But aren't these just copies of what we already have, just built with different tools? I thought that something ambitious should be something that is solving a problem that so far is unsolved or, even better, that we didn't know we have... maybe that's a good thing - because it can mean that the real meat, the revolution is still ahead of us. Or maybe that's a bad thing, proving that people don't want a revolution, they want the same thing they have now just more dough to enjoy it 🤔 |

| body | # Nihil Novi I wouldn't say that the perfect trap metaphor is a groundbreaking achievement of human thought either. Though it does help (me, at least) in structurising some concepts. It's also important to note that I am a primitive thinker - meaning that I am not educated in any way in that field (apart from a PhD in google usage). Because of this my writing might seem trivial and childish to some, while to others they might appear more approachable and easier to relate to. PS. You may want to read the previous post on the [baseline](https://busy.org/@creept0/the-perfect-trap-metaphore-baseline) of the perfect trap # Repetitiveness What I find an innovative aspect and a very important part of the perfect trap is it's looping nature. The futility of the "participants" comes not only from the fact that there is no prize at the end of the rainbow, but more importantly from the constant, imposed repetitiveness of this same process. One might say that because of this looping nature the futility here is actually even more nihilistic than in the nihilism itself, as not only you have to engage in a pointless act, but you also have to repeat it *ad infinitum*. We are no longer looking at Sisyphus as an extreme example of absurdism - in the perfect trap we are all caught in the same loop as he is, and a way out proposed by absurdists - suicide - is no longer valid in the perfect trap. There is no escape from the perfect trap *by definition*.
*(Gustave Doré - Dante Alighieri - Inferno - Plate 22 - [source](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gustave_Dor%C3%A9_-_Dante_Alighieri_-_Inferno_-_Plate_22_(Canto_VII_-_Hoarders_and_Wasters).jpg))*
## Futility 🡒 potential But what many seem to miss and what is the biggest misconception from my (shallow) understanding of Nietzsche is that the futility of existence doesn't mean it's pointless - it actually means the opposite. The fact that *God is dead* implies that there are no rules that bound as - and therefore we are able to create rules of our own. So by discarding creation, creation becomes possible and within one's grasp. The same applies to the perfect trap - if the game is rigged and there is no way to *win* it, one is suddenly freed from the shackles of obligation - you no longer have to *make it* in life, there is no way for you to be better - as at the end of the day everyone will go back to the same place, to the start position, which, in the perfect trap, becomes the source of all creation, a twisted bottomless well, but bottomless is just a demeaning way of saying **infinite**. |

| body | # The first iteration You step into the world and the door closes behind you. The natural first reaction is to try to open them back to see where you got here from, but since this proves to be difficult (or impossible), you give up on this. The first look around you shows a vast world stretching to the far horizon, with one door somewhat close to you signed "exit". But what's the point of leaving if you just got here? You travel through the area around you, meet people, work, build a house, start a family, get divorced... The details don't really matter in this case. You live a long happy life, or a short horrible one, the important thing is that you finally come to the conclusion that you have had everything this world had to offer and it's time to move on. So you say your goodbyes (some people left already so it's not a very long list) and head towards the exit. One last look around, as you do feel a bit sad leaving - attachments - but yet know that it's time. You open the door and step into the light (which is not really necessary for this metaphor to make sense but it's a nice touch) and hear the door closing behind you. A tingling sensation of excitement follows as you open your eyes in this new world you're about to enter. ## The second iteration Excitement gives way to confusion. Why am I here again? The question echoes in your head but, as is the nature of echoes, fades, just like your memories. A very delicate voice in the back of your head saying "I thing I've been here already" is all that is left, apart from that - you're a newborn. Again. Having no other options nor any specific goals, you venture into this world again, living a life that you can (some things went the same way as last time, but most didn't). Somewhat unaware at some point you decide to step into the exit light to see what's on the other side.. ## The third iteration Fuck! Not that again! # The point I think you get the general idea of what I'm pitching here. There's no way out. There is no grand plan. You're stuck in a loop, and while the possibilities of your actions are endless (even in limited conditions - it's not a paradox, it's math) the outcome is always the same - you live, you die. ## Happy ending I think the most important idea in this metaphor is that it completely erases the concept of a happy ending - since the loop is infinite, the cycle never ends. No matter how hard you try, how saint you are, how much money you earn - you always come back to the same place. That's what makes this trap perfect. ## Easter eggs But there must be something more to life than that, right? Buddha did it so I can as well. Or I can get probed by the aliens and become an intergalactic mutant spy. The metaphore of the perfect trap assumes it's perfect (that's why it's named like that - pretty clever right?). It's construction encompasses various cracks in the world which are actually designed into it, Easter eggs put in place to fool you into believing that there's something more. ## Masks Even with endless possibilities we tend to put on a specific mask, a role, fall into one of several categories possible. I call them masks because it would be a stretch to call them personalities. They're not even roles as usually it's not a conscious choice which mask you put on - more of an outcome of random events and choices. # But why? I had to write this down. The idea has been growing within me for years and it was not a pleasant process. This is actually a way for me to structurize my own head - I'd even call it a healing process. With one added bonus - if this helps anybody, anybody who is lost and confused, anybody who has been struggling in life with a deep despise for himself for not "achieving more" - if this makes him/her feel a bit better - then this is gold for me. **And yes, this is I a way of me saying hi - as this is my first post.** |

You're stuck in a loop, and while the possibilities of your actions are endless (even in limited conditions - it's not a paradox, it's math) the outcome is always the same - you live, you die.\n## Happy ending\nI think the most important idea in this metaphor is that it completely erases the concept of a happy ending - since the loop is infinite, the cycle never ends. No matter how hard you try, how saint you are, how much money you earn - you always come back to the same place. That's what makes this trap perfect.\n## Easter eggs\nBut there must be something more to life than that, right? Buddha did it so I can as well. Or I can get probed by the aliens and become an intergalactic mutant spy.\nThe metaphore of the perfect trap assumes it's perfect (that's why it's named like that - pretty clever right?). It's construction encompasses various cracks in the world which are actually designed into it, Easter eggs put in place to fool you into believing that there's something more.\n## Masks\nEven with endless possibilities we tend to put on a specific mask, a role, fall into one of several categories possible. \nI call them masks because it would be a stretch to call them personalities. They're not even roles as usually it's not a conscious choice which mask you put on - more of an outcome of random events and choices. \n# But why?\nI had to write this down. The idea has been growing within me for years and it was not a pleasant process. This is actually a way for me to structurize my own head - I'd even call it a healing process.\nWith one added bonus - if this helps anybody, anybody who is lost and confused, anybody who has been struggling in life with a deep despise for himself for not \"achieving more\" - if this makes him/her feel a bit better - then this is gold for me.\n\n**And yes, this is I a way of me saying hi - as this is my first post.**",

| body | So a way to think about society is a network of stakeholders with different interests. You the individual have your own interests. The IRS has it's interests. The competitor has their interests. Your data sharing policy should be set up to protect your interests but this does not mean you must protect your interests at the expense of for example the IRS or some legal regulatory agency. Your interests could be that you want to reduce your own regulatory risk, your financial risks, your legal risks, etc. The IRS or whomever has their own mission. The rational solution would be to set your data sharing policy in such a way to reduce your risks (including your risk of being a focus of IRS). The easiest way to do this is to simply develop a technical means where you can prove to the IRS that you've paid your fair share of taxes on your transactions (even if you keep your transactions shielded). How is this possible? Well that is one of the promises of advanced cryptography such as homomorphic encryption. The idea that we can keep our data encrypted and still compute it. The IRS example is probably a bad one because the tax code is so hellishly complex that implementing something like that would be difficult but for many examples such as reputation scores and peer matching algorithms you can get major benefits keeping all the data encrypted. |

| body | I actually agree with you. In the long term (benefit to the species) knowledge must be released to all. So I'm not the person who believes in radical secrecy or absolute secrecy. What I promote is privacy where the distinction is that privacy is all about access control. It's about ownership of certain information and protecting those ownership rights. So it could be set up for example that all secrets expire after for example 66 years. This is because most people will not be alive 66 years from now for example. Classified information works in this way where it's classified for a period of time and eventually declassified. This is also true for patents, copyright, etc. The restrictions exist temporarily in order to provide a competitive advantage to the inventor. If we can guarantee cryptographically that the lock on the invention will expire after x amount of years then in my opinion this is far better than radical transparency. Why? Because we can still have freedom, maintain ownership rights, reward inventions, basically we can get the benefits of access control/strategic restriction. At the same time we also as a species would be guaranteed to get the long term benefits of knowledge release. The issue with radical transparency is most people only look at the upsides while ignoring all the downsides. Why support any radical absolutism? Absolute secrecy is stupid but so is absolute transparency. To be locked into either of these limits freedom in different ways in my opinion. Locked into radical transparency and we lose individuality in favor of conformity without the ability for competition. In radical secrecy we have the problem of corruption where anyone and everyone could be taking a bribe, or betray you for the other side, or be spying on you or be the mole. What we seem to want is the ability to have transparency where it aids in producing security and privacy where it aids in producing security. The absolutes don't seem to be about security and are more about politics. |

| body | 1. This post is great but the discussion below it is gold 🏅 2. I have BIG existential issues when it comes to restricting knowledge. Probably one might argue that the rapid development of Blockchain is due to the lack of those restrictions and that putting the walls up will just make this "alternative solution" a mirror to the capitalist corporate driven economy of now. Designing it in a way where the benefits of innovations are not distributed evenly among everyone (due to privacy/restrictions whatever) but yet still ARE distributed is probably the ideal solution to a lot of problems were dealing woth, however the big question is if a balance like this is achievable and will not be another whale birthing factory |
