La Dra Maria Grazia Calore, médico veterinaria y especialista en comportamiento de animales domésticos, nos ayuda a entender algunos aspectos de este asunto.\n\nLa memoria del perro: una habilidad para cada ocasión\nEstos son los diferentes tipos de memoria que nuestro mejor amigo utiliza, dependiendo de la situación concreta:\n\nMemoria a corto plazo: hace que el perro recuerde las acciones inmediatas; una vez cumplida la tarea, es posible que olvide la información que memorizó. Los perros la usa para realizar una serie de acciones consecutivas: “tomo la pelota, la pongo en la caseta, busco un escondite mejor, recobro la pelota”.\nMemoria a largo plazo: podríamos compararla con una enorme biblioteca donde, con la ayuda de un experto bibliotecario, el hipocampo, es posible recuperar la información que él necesita, en el momento en que la necesita. Este tipo de memoria almacena todas las referencias de su vida (experiencias, caras, olores, objetos y ruidos conocidos) y gran parte de la información obtenida durante la etapa de desarrollo (los primeros 3-4 meses de vida, período que corresponde a la adolescencia del perro, en la que se va acercando a la edad del pleno desarrollo sexual). Cada experiencia del animal en este estadio quedará marcada en su memoria, proceso que posee una función adaptativa, pues le permitirá al individuo no repetir graves errores cometidos y reconocer el peligro. El perro, al igual que el ser humano, no deja de aprender ni memorizar, pero con el paso del tiempo harán falta más repeticiones de la misma experiencia para poder fijarla en su memoria.\n– Memoria procedimental : le permite realizar acciones complejas, tales como resolver un juego de activación mental, hacer pasar un objeto a través de una apertura dándole vueltas, volver a casa, etc. De hecho, el perro crea en su mente una especie de mapa que usará cuando vuelva a repetirse una situación similar, y la adaptará al nuevo contexto.\n\nLa memoria del perro y nuestro comportamiento\nDe modo que, también en los perros, cada experiencia deja rastros en la memoria: algunos más indelebles que otros, y estos pueden ser recordados. Hay recuerdos positivos, que provienen de experiencias positivas (fijados por el reforzamiento conductual a través de la comida, las caricias y la aprobación social) pero también hay experiencias negativas (desafortunadamente estas últimas son las que más tendencia tienen a perdurar, tanto a largo como a corto plazo, aunque ello sea conveniente para la supervivencia del animal).
