| title | The Blockchain Handbook - Chapter 16: VeChain (VEN) |
| body | To the untrained ear, the description of VeChain, a "distributed business ecosystem" built by "leveraging blockchain technology," might sound a bit generic, but savvier crypto-enthusiasts realize the 2-year-old company's platform for product information management stands to alter the modern concept of the supply chain. If successful with its grand goals, VeChain will usher in a system where consumers and retailers have more access to information about products. As a result of this increased transparency, they will be better able to determine the authenticity and quality of products as well, or so VeChain is pushing. The term "blockchain as a service" has been coined to describe such companies that want to significantly change businesses as VeChain does, and there are plenty showing the nascent idea some interest as 2018 has seen a significant spike in value of the VEN token, to around $5.90. At present, VeChain has a market cap of $2,817,577,629, or 279,247 BTC. This is coupled with an approximate 24-hour volume of $57,911,900 and a supply of 477,712,609 VEN.
VeChain: Competition, Pros and Cons
The VeChain platform is quite dissimilar from many other blockchains and associated cryptocurrencies one might view as typical. For starters, the emphasis on the supply-chain management process is one that is unique. The network it has envisioned is one where all information about the movement of products throughout a supply chain is recorded, verified and accessible by consumers and retailers. This, it believes, will put the ecosystem on even footing, making it more secure, but it begs the question, "How?" The answer is through asset digitization. With VeChain's system, manufacturers assign unique identities to their products on the platform, then track the movements of these products through a series of NFC chips, RFID trackers and QR codes. While it might not seem like the most thrilling of technologies, this system has the potential to disrupt counterfeiting operations because combining the blockchain technology into the mix removes the need for trust in the supply chain, and consumers can be certain the products they receive are the genuine article by way of a quick scan. This isn't the only way in which VeChain plans to implement, though. The company recently announced that it would be rebranding as VeChain Thor, moving its mission beyond the supply-chain management market so it could dip its toes into the world of Enterprise dApps as well. With that change in focus also comes a change in the VeChain ecosystem to sustain the slightly revamped business model, what it has termed "VeChain Thor Power." Key to this model will be a two-token structure that functions at different levels of the system. By splitting up the system into the VET and THOR tokens, it will be able to make the "VeChain Thor blockchain more suitable for conducting business/financial activities" while simultaneously shielding the network from the volatility of price fluctuations. As VeChain puts it, "[N]o matter how high the value of VET becomes in the near future, our ecosystem will still function as intended." "As intended" is with VET as VeChain's smart payment currency, the "store of value," while THOR serves as the "underlying cost of using the VeChain Blockchain." It is consumed when performing operations on the blockchain (transferring VET, executing smart contracts, and so on). VeChain's smart contract and dApp functionality will be reminiscent of originators like Ethereum. Whether it can make a dent in this space with so much competition remains to be seen, but it's been steadily forging partnerships (the Chinese Government in particular) that might give it a leg up. While the announcement of VeChain's pivot into smart contracts and dApps has drawn some interest and helped boost the value, it has also drawn some skepticism from naysayers who are unsure if the company's transition will be a successful one. Those in VeChain's corner will note, however, that the company already has a history of achieving results and delivering on a functional product, which is more than can be said for many a recent blockchain technology.
The Uses of VeChain
VeChain doesn't just have possible use cases for its technology laid out on its website. It has specific examples of the product in action in fields as diverse as liquor, luxury goods, automobiles, retail and even agriculture. One example is the tracking and authentication platform created for wine bottles, which helped improve both safety for consumers and curtail counterfeits from entering the supply chain. On top of that, instances of mishandling were reduced as well, keeping product secure and in pristine condition when it arrived on shelves. If VeChain is as adept at smart contracts and dApps as it is at supply chains, it will be interesting to see what it comes up with next.
The Future for VeChain
The future for VeChain lies in its ability to successfully execute its pivot from supply-chain management blockchain technology to a smart contract and dApp platform. Progress and updates on this process can be gleaned from its Medium page, with critical details about the rebirth of the platform coming from the article VeChain Apotheosis Part II. If all goes according to the company's plan, it will rival Ethereum in both the size of its user base and functionalities of its platform.
Sources:
1. https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/vechain/ 2. https://www.vechain.com/#/ 3. https://captainaltcoin.com/vechain-thor-cryptocurrency/ 4. https://themerkle.com/what-is-vechain/ 5. https://www.mycryptopedia.com/vechain-ven-explained/ 6. https://coincentral.com/vechain-thor-beginner-guide/ 7. https://medium.com/@vechainofficial 8. https://medium.com/@vechainofficial/vechain-apotheosis-part-ii-thor-power-forged-974111a93278 9. https://cryptominded.com/coin/vechain/ 10. https://www.weusecoins.com/what-is-vechain/ 11. https://steemit.com/vechain/@sowapac/what-is-vechain-ven-should-you-invest-where-to-buy-vechain-ven |

| title | The Blockchain Handbook - Chapter 15: Tether (USDT) |
| body | Proclaimed by Business Insider as the "cryptocurrency that people worry could crash Bitcoin and that regulators are investigating," Tether already has quite the reputation behind it, burgeoning though it may be. Founded in 2015 under the name Realcoin, Tether is a digital form of money designed to reap the benefits of both blockchain technology and traditional currency, by virtue of the Tether platform (which leverages the security and transparency of the blockchain) and being "100 percent backed" by currencies in their reserves: "Every tether is always backed one-to-one by traditional currency held in our reserves. So 1 USDâ‚® is always equivalent to 1 USD." This, Tether's founders say, makes it a stable currency equivalent to the U.S. dollar, Euro or Yen. To their credit, since 2015, the value has held stable around the $1.00 mark with only minor fluctuations. At present, Tether has a market cap of about $2,223,947,436, or 217,852 BTC, with a 24-hour volume of $2,365,420,000 and a circulating supply of 2,217,140,814 USDT. Tether publishes their reserve holdings daily and says they undergo frequent audits to ensure that their in-circulation currency always matches their reserves. It's an interesting concept and has deservedly generated quite the recent buzz.
Tether: Competition, Pros and Cons
Tether claims they are providing a more modern approach to money. They see the advantages of cryptocurrency -- low transaction costs, international borderless transferability/convertibility, trustless ownership/exchange, pseudo-anonymity, real-time transparency, and immunity from legacy banking system issues -- but note that cryptocurrency has yet to see widespread adoption. The issue, they posit, is that most cryptocurrencies have drawbacks of their own that limit their use in the mainstream, including "volatile price swings, inadequate mass-market understanding of the technology, and insufficient ease-of-use for non-technical users. What Tether seeks to implement is a bridge to the gap, one that will connect the average individual with the powers afforded by blockchain technology. According to the whitepaper: "Each tether unit issued into circulation is backed in a one-to-one ratio by the corresponding fiat currency unit held in deposit by Hong Kong-based Tether Limited. Tethers may be redeemable/exchangeable for the underlying fiat currency pursuant to Tether Limited's terms of service or, if the holder prefers, the equivalent spot value in Bitcoin." From this system, users enjoy many benefits, as explained by Tether. The cryptocurrency exists on Bitcoin's blockchain, as opposed to less tested systems, offering a proven and secure platform. Tethers can be used exactly like Bitcoins (peer-to-peer, pseudo-anonymous, decentralized, etc.) and are capable of similar transactions. Tether also claims to shield users from undue market risks (a feature of being tied to fiat currency), and makes the entire concept of digital currency more easy to comprehend for less tech-savvy individuals. The process is as simple as signing up for an account, adding currency to a wallet, then storing and spending that currency as desired. The possibilities, for both businesses and users, they state, are unlimited: "Tether enables businesses - including exchanges, wallets, payment processors, financial services and ATMs - to easily use fiat-backed tokens on blockchains. By leveraging blockchain technology, Tether allows you to store, send and receive digital tokens person-to-person, globally, instantly and securely for a fraction of the cost of alternatives." A rosy picture, but the platform is not without criticism. For instance, the Business Insider article cited earlier claims that there mounting fear among cryptocurrency communities at large that Tether doesn't have the reserves necessary to back their currency as they profess. They cite a prominent naysayer, also reported on by the New York Times, who has published numerous essays under the handle Bitfinex'ed detailing what they see as trickery on behalf of Tether Limited. Tether denies the allegations, which have done little to shake its value or diminish its market cap. In fact, the market cap for Tether has risen sharply since the beginning of 2018, with more and more prospective users interested in what the company has to offer. Still, accusations like these may give pause to those who might be on the fence, and raise questions about whether Tether's auditing process is as thorough as they claim. This year may well be a test for their vision, and provide insights as to the viability of the company's core idea.
The Uses of Tether
The concept of Tether is a simple one to grasp: digital money that can be used for various transactions. On their website, they lay out several use examples for blockchain companies, exchanges, individuals and traders. These include bypassing traditional financial institutions to reduce operating costs, using Tether as an alternative to for deposits and withdrawals on exchanges, and providing a means to move currency globally and without the hassle of banks.
The Future for Tether
Tether keeps users abreast of their progress through their announcements page, which details recent and upcoming news regarding the platform. They've performed an update to their wallet service along with general platform updates, and have announced that both USD and Euro-based Tether currency are now supported on Ethereum. Fears of "crashing the price of Bitcoin" and hampering the future of cryptocurrency don't seem to have dampened their spirits, nor has a recent security incident which saw some of their services go down temporarily. If all goes according to plan, they'll be working to improve their system and branch the adoption of Tether to even more networks throughout the year and beyond.
Sources:
1. https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/tether/ 2. https://tether.to/ 3. https://tether.to/faqs/ 4. https://tether.to/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/TetherWhitePaper.pdf 5. https://tether.to/why-use-tether/ 6. https://tether.to/tether-for-individuals/ 7. https://tether.to/about-us/ 8. https://tether.to/category/announcements/ 9. http://www.businessinsider.com/tether-explained-bitcoin-cryptocurrency-why-people-worried-2018-1 10. https://medium.com/@bitfinexed |

Founded in 2015 under the name Realcoin, Tether is a digital form of money designed to reap the benefits of both blockchain technology and traditional currency, by virtue of the Tether platform (which leverages the security and transparency of the blockchain) and being \"100 percent backed\" by currencies in their reserves:\n\n\"Every tether is always backed one-to-one by traditional currency held in our reserves. So 1 USDâ‚® is always equivalent to 1 USD.\"\n\n\n\nThis, Tether's founders say, makes it a stable currency equivalent to the U.S. dollar, Euro or Yen. It's an interesting concept and has deservedly generated quite the recent buzz.\n\n
Tether: Competition, Pros and Cons
\nTether claims they are providing a more modern approach to money. They see the advantages of cryptocurrency -- low transaction costs, international borderless transferability/convertibility, trustless ownership/exchange, pseudo-anonymity, real-time transparency, and immunity from legacy banking system issues -- but note that cryptocurrency has yet to see widespread adoption.\n\nThe issue, they posit, is that most cryptocurrencies have drawbacks of their own that limit their use in the mainstream, including \"volatile price swings, inadequate mass-market understanding of the technology, and insufficient ease-of-use for non-technical users. What Tether seeks to implement is a bridge to the gap, one that will connect the average individual with the powers afforded by blockchain technology. According to the whitepaper:\n\n\"Each tether unit issued into circulation is backed in a one-to-one ratio by the corresponding fiat currency unit held in deposit by Hong Kong-based Tether Limited. Tethers may be redeemable/exchangeable for the underlying fiat currency pursuant to Tether Limited's terms of service or, if the holder prefers, the equivalent spot value in Bitcoin.\"\n\nFrom this system, users enjoy many benefits, as explained by Tether. The cryptocurrency exists on Bitcoin's blockchain, as opposed to less tested systems, offering a proven and secure platform. Tethers can be used exactly like Bitcoins (peer-to-peer, pseudo-anonymous, decentralized, etc.) and are capable of similar transactions.\n\nTether also claims to shield users from undue market risks (a feature of being tied to fiat currency), and makes the entire concept of digital currency more easy to comprehend for less tech-savvy individuals. The process is as simple as signing up for an account, adding currency to a wallet, then storing and spending that currency as desired. The possibilities, for both businesses and users, they state, are unlimited:\n\n\"Tether enables businesses - including exchanges, wallets, payment processors, financial services and ATMs - to easily use fiat-backed tokens on blockchains. By leveraging blockchain technology, Tether allows you to store, send and receive digital tokens person-to-person, globally, instantly and securely for a fraction of the cost of alternatives.\"\n\nA rosy picture, but the platform is not without criticism. For instance, the Business Insider article cited earlier claims that there mounting fear among cryptocurrency communities at large that Tether doesn't have the reserves necessary to back their currency as they profess. They cite a prominent naysayer, also reported on by the New York Times, who has published numerous essays under the handle Bitfinex'ed detailing what they see as trickery on behalf of Tether Limited.\n\nTether denies the allegations, which have done little to shake its value or diminish its market cap. In fact, the market cap for Tether has risen sharply since the beginning of 2018, with more and more prospective users interested in what the company has to offer. Still, accusations like these may give pause to those who might be on the fence, and raise questions about whether Tether's auditing process is as thorough as they claim. This year may well be a test for their vision, and provide insights as to the viability of the company's core idea.\n\n\n\n
The Uses of Tether
\nThe concept of Tether is a simple one to grasp: digital money that can be used for various transactions. On their website, they lay out several use examples for blockchain companies, exchanges, individuals and traders. These include bypassing traditional financial institutions to reduce operating costs, using Tether as an alternative to for deposits and withdrawals on exchanges, and providing a means to move currency globally and without the hassle of banks.\n\n
The Future for Tether
\nTether keeps users abreast of their progress through their announcements page, which details recent and upcoming news regarding the platform. They've performed an update to their wallet service along with general platform updates, and have announced that both USD and Euro-based Tether currency are now supported on Ethereum.\nFears of \"crashing the price of Bitcoin\" and hampering the future of cryptocurrency don't seem to have dampened their spirits, nor has a recent security incident which saw some of their services go down temporarily. If all goes according to plan, they'll be working to improve their system and branch the adoption of Tether to even more networks throughout the year and beyond.\n\n
Sources:
\n1.\thttps://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/tether/\n2.\thttps://tether.to/\n3.\thttps://tether.to/faqs/\n4.\thttps://tether.to/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/TetherWhitePaper.pdf\n5.\thttps://tether.to/why-use-tether/\n6.\thttps://tether.to/tether-for-individuals/\n7.\thttps://tether.to/about-us/\n8.\thttps://tether.to/category/announcements/\n9.\thttp://www.businessinsider.com/tether-explained-bitcoin-cryptocurrency-why-people-worried-2018-1\n10.\thttps://medium.com/@bitfinexed",

| title | The Blockchain Handbook - Chapter 14: TRON (TRX) |
| body | Founded by Justin Sun and the TRON Foundation in 2017, TRON is a decentralized, open-source cryptocurrency and network with aims of aiding content creators in receiving remuneration for sharing their works. The whitepaper, unfortunately, is heavy on Chinese characters, but a useful translation of their self description comes by way of TwentySumCrypto's Medium article: "TRON is a world-leading blockchain-based decentralized protocol that aims to construct a worldwide free content entertainment system with the blockchain and distributed storage technology." In short, they're creating an environment that cuts out the content-controlling middlemen like YouTube, Spotify, the Google Play Store, Apple Store and the like. The idea has attracted some attention, which gave TRON a boost (although it has since cooled off) at the beginning of the year. TRON currently has a market cap of $2,990,096,297, or 277,763 BTC, and holds a value around $0.045478, with a 24-hour volume of $190,917,000 and a circulating supply of 65,748,192,476 TRX.
TRON: Competition, Pros and Cons
TRON's goal is to "heal the internet," as they see it. As such, they want to wrest control from corporations such as Google, Amazon and Facebook, returning it to the hands of content creators. To this end, they are constructing a platform that will liberate data and provide free access to it, enable content creators to gain digital assets when their content propagates, allow personal ICOs to distribute digital assets, and allow for a distributed digital asset exchange (think games and similar commodities). It's a bold promise, one where the content creators stand to earn more on their own than they currently do through intermediary sites. To achieve this, they have unveiled a multi-step plan that should culminate by 2023. As detailed on Hacked: * Exodus: TRON will implement simple distributed file sharing for its users, sans blockchain technology. * Odyssey: TRON will incentivize the creation and early adoption of its entertainment community by content creators. Creators will be paid for their efforts through a tipping scheme. * Great Voyage: TRON will introduce personal ICOs, allowing the transformation from "fan economy" to "fan finance." * Apollo: TRON will launch its own tokens for decentralized trading, increasing economic vitality. * Star Trek: TRON will transition its content platform to a decentralized gaming platform with "autonomous gaming and predicting functions." This is to generate more market capitalization. * Eternity: TRON will address fundraising and monetization concerns, allowing investors to inject money into popular games. This, they claim, will allow them to expand what they call the "Web 4.0 Ecosystem," a growing network they say boasts more than 100,000 members from more than 100 countries. Key features of this network are buzzwords many have seen bandied about before -- digital assets, blockchain-based smart contracts, decentralized applications -- all resulting in the fresh entertainment market that TRON envisions. This is not their only goal, however, as they'd eventually like to see their ecosystem adopted in areas beyond entertainment. If this all plays out as they expect, an entire global society might function on the back of TRON's platform, decentralizing a variety of businesses and industries in the same manner. Not all share their optimism, however. As detailed in the Daily Dot, scandals have cast doubts on TRON's ability to achieve any of its lofty goals. It started with the accusation of plagiarized elements within the whitepaper, which may have been lifted from Filecoin. Sun defended the whitepaper, blaming translation issues for the confusion, but further troubles struck with the announcement that TRON would supposedly be collaborating with Baofeng (the Chinese version of Netflix). This announcement, users noted, was misleading, since "the partnership was actually with a new blockchain division within Baofeng, called the BCN." Then there was the claim that Sun had "sold 6 billion TRX for $300 million," leading to speculation that the TRON CEO might be running a scam of sorts. Sun denied these allegations as well, but it opened the door for even harsher criticism, coming by way of Bitcoin.com, TrustNodes and, most notably, the Washington Post: "[TRON is] the cryptocurrency that's valued at over $7 billion even though it doesn't actually exist. It's just a white paper filled with a bunch of buzzwords." A major test for TRON going forward will be turning around the negative assumptions about the company and convincing a wider swath of the public that they are who they claim to be.
The Uses of TRON
In spite of the blowback, TRON does seem to have some legitimate partnerships and real-world use cases under its belt, detailed again by TwentySumCrypto. Most impressive of these is the release of the game Pet Planet/Love.Pet, a virtual pet game that's seen as an answer to Ethereum's CryptoKitties. If successes like this one continue, it might show that the TRON platform is a viable one for the creation and propagation of content and digital assets, as they envisioned.
The Future for TRON
TRON is still in the early stages of their roadmap, and, in spite of controversy and sliding values, there are arguments that 2018 just might be TRON's year. Users can likely look forward to an increase in the number of TRON's partnerships and an expansion of the content put on the platform, along with the integration of TRON and TRX with other apps to facilitate transactions.
Sources:
1. https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/tron/ 2. https://tron.network/enindex.html 3. https://dn-peiwo-web.qbox.me/Tron-Whitepaper-1031-V18-EN.pdf 4. https://medium.com/@TwentySumCrypto/tron-trx-coin-cryptocurrency-literally-everything-you-need-to-know-all-in-1-article-cea0387929a3 5. http://www.newsweek.com/what-tron-cryptocurrencys-budding-founder-justin-sun-wants-change-internet-786035 6. https://cryptominded.com/coin/tron/ 7. https://hacked.com/beginners-guide-tron-trx-cryptocurrency/ 8. https://www.thesun.co.uk/money/5274198/tron-price-today-trx-cryptocurrency-latest-news/ 9. https://coincentral.com/trx-beginners-guide/ 10. https://www.dailydot.com/debug/what-is-tron-trx/ 11. https://www.trustnodes.com/2018/01/06/tron-crashes-rumors-justin-sun-founder-sold-6-billion-trx 12. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2018/01/12/the-bitcoin-bubble-is-a-joke-and-youre-the-punchline/?utm_term=.7edf47d088b8 13. https://cryptorecorder.com/2018/01/25/what-is-tron-trx-and-what-does-it-stand-for/ 14. https://cryptorecorder.com/2018/02/09/three-reasons-why-tron-trx-might-become-popular-in-2018/ |

| title | The Blockchain Handbook - Chapter 13: NEM (XEM) |
| body | NEM has been in the headlines recently because of repeated hits to their value, dropping below $0.54 in February. That grim picture doesn't convey a complete story, however, as NEM had been making serious strides at the beginning of 2018, and the so-called "smart asset blockchain" still has plenty going for it. Launched in 2015 by pseudonymous developers, NEM is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency and blockchain platform. It was originally conceived as a fork of NXT, but then reworked as a completely new network, one with enterprise-grade solutions designed to set it apart from other altcoins and introduce innovations that would allow it to compete in a decentralized future fraught with rival currencies. Among these innovations are the proof-of-importance algorithm, multi-signature accounts, encrypted messaging and the Eigentrust ++ reputation system. The multitude of features have generated plenty of interest in the platform, and with its incorporation into the Mijin commercial blockchain, NEM saw some significant growth heading into 2018. At present, NEM's market cap is around $4,547,231,999, or 390,104 BTC. The value currently rests at about $0.505248, with a 24-hour volume around $73,120,400 and a circulating supply of 8,999,999,999 XEM.
NEM: Competition, Pros and Cons
One of the key features that sets NEM apart from other blockchain platforms is their Smart Asset System. The idea is to provide a customizable and open blockchain that allows users to fine-tune how they use the platform. As NEM puts it: "Focus on building exactly what you need, whether that's a fintech system, tracking logistics, an ICO, document notarization, decentralized authentication or much more." The blockchain contains a Namespace, which defines a user's "home" on the blockchain. In these spaces, users can create Mosaics, which NEM calls the "basic building blocks of Smart Assets." Mosaics provide "easy-to-remember names to user addresses" and other details, and can be used to represent whatever the user decides: signatures, coins, status updates, etc. The Smart Asset System goes deeper than this, though. It also allows users to create "Addresses," which then serve as containers for Mosaics and can be connected with Multisig rules. The address can be a user, a unique asset or other variables that users define, which they can then update or change through configurable Transactions. The system allows for a great deal of flexibility, allowing just about anyone to construct whatever system they dream up, then link it to the NEM blockchain in a simple manner. The Proof-of-Importance algorithm touched on earlier is another interesting facet that NEM's system includes. It differs from the commonly used Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake algorithms, creating consensus by way of incentivizing participation in the NEM platform: "Each account is assigned an importance score that proxies its aggregate importance in the NEM economy. Accounts with higher importance scores have higher probabilities of harvesting a block. Because all transactions are publicly available in NEM, the transaction graph of the NEM economy can be calculated exactly." Nodes have "importance scores," which dictate how often they may harvest (akin to mining in the POW system), and, over time, the coins "vested" in a user's wallet contribute to their importance score. Accounts must have at least 10,000 vested XEM to be eligible for an importance score. The more transactions a user sends through the network and the more a user participates in the network on a regular basis, the more important they become. This creates a platform where an investment of time is required, and users are unable to game the system simply by having more resources than another at the outset, as can happen in some Proof-of-Work scenarios. It's not the only advantage that NEM touts, however. On their website, they list four main areas in which they believe they outpace competitors: performance, ease-of-development, customization and security. NEM claims to have coded their blockchain platform "from the ground up" to enhance scale and speed, using a "permissioned private blockchain" to give users faster transaction rates for the internal ledger. Ease-of-development and customization come by way of the Smart Asset System, which, instead of requiring users to develop smart contract code from scratch or use "off-blockchain" techniques for defining custom assets, provides "direct API access to a specialized set of tested and secure on-blockchain features." Finally, the security features of NEM's platform include built-in spam filters, encrypted messaging, P2P time synchronization and multi-signature addresses, among other details, all of which are discussed on the company's technology page. Although NEM has suffered from a sharp rise and dramatic fall early in 2018, that's not enough to count out its technology as a mere fad. Values are volatile, but the support behind the community and their blockchain vision is still going strong at the moment. The
Uses of NEM
NEM outlines several use cases for their platform on their site, stating that the Smart Asset System can be put to work to build "an incredible variety of real-world applications" for businesses. Among these, they list facilitating financial payments, creating new cryptocurrencies (sans programming), enabling mobile payments, overhauling equity markets to save money and improve efficiency, creating escrow services, use as a liquid asset, and creating new versions of payment applications like PayPal.
The Future for NEM
NEM is still investing in their future by way of improvements to the platform and the expansion of their global adoption. Their current focus is on the Japanese market, with periphery focus on other international markets. President of the NEM Foundation, Jeff McDonald, has been hard at work representing the platform publicly at speaking events, such as a recent presentation at the University of California Irvine.
Sources:
1. https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/nem/ 2. https://nem.io/ 3. https://nemflash.io/ 4. https://nemflash.io/nem-xem-listed-binance-reveals-plans/ 5. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/blockchain-at-uci-blockchain-pr-present-enterprise-solutions-with-the-nem-blockchain-tickets-43072728691 6. https://nem.io/technology/ 7. https://nem.io/wp-content/themes/nem/files/NEM_techRef.pdf 8. https://coincentral.com/what-is-nem/ 9. https://steemit.com/altcoins/@vincent4384/is-nem-really-the-sleeping-giant 10. https://themerkle.com/nem-price-keeps-taking-hits-as-value-drops-below-0-54/ |

President of the NEM Foundation, Jeff McDonald, has been hard at work representing the platform publicly at speaking events, such as a recent presentation at the University of California Irvine.\n\n
Sources:
\n1.\thttps://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/nem/\n2.\thttps://nem.io/\n3.\thttps://nemflash.io/\n4.\thttps://nemflash.io/nem-xem-listed-binance-reveals-plans/\n5.\thttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/blockchain-at-uci-blockchain-pr-present-enterprise-solutions-with-the-nem-blockchain-tickets-43072728691\n6.\thttps://nem.io/technology/\n7.\thttps://nem.io/wp-content/themes/nem/files/NEM_techRef.pdf\n8.\thttps://coincentral.com/what-is-nem/\n9.\thttps://steemit.com/altcoins/@vincent4384/is-nem-really-the-sleeping-giant\n10.\thttps://themerkle.com/nem-price-keeps-taking-hits-as-value-drops-below-0-54/",

| title | The Blockchain Handbook - Chapter 12: IOTA (IOTA) |
| body | Self-proclaimed as the "next generation blockchain," IOTA, launched in 2016, bills itself as the future of the "Internet Of Things" and is designed especially for this ever-increasing web of internet-connected objects. As the co-founders and the IOTA team see it, the expansion of the Internet Of Things will require "the need for interoperability and sharing of resources" between the various devices. They'd like to see IOTA become the backbone of this new landscape, creating a business model that turns technological resources into a service to be traded in a real-time, open market, sans fees. The idea is one that has plenty of people excited, with outlets like the Daily Dot contemplating whether or not it might be "the next Bitcoin." That interest sparked a large jump in value in the later part of 2017, and even though it's cooled heading into February of 2018, the market cap for IOTA still sits near $4,423,900,398, about 446,003 BTC, while the value is approximately $1.59, with a 24-hour volume of $55,855,200 and the entirety of its maximum supply -- 2,779,530,283 MIOTA -- in circulation.
IOTA: Competition, Pros and Cons
Though the hype about IOTA becoming the next Bitcoin is real, it's important to note there are some significant differences between the two platforms. For starters, IOTA doesn't generate blocks like Bitcoin, nor does it need to be mined. Instead of the tried-and-true blockchain concept of other cryptocurrencies, IOTA uses something known as Tangle, a "revolutionary new blockless distributed ledger." According to the IOTA team, this system is "scalable, lightweight, and makes it possible to transfer value without any fees." That description is just a cursory one, though. IOTA goes into more depth about the tangle system in their white paper, and a helpful summary comes by way of A Beginner's Guide To IOTA: "For every transaction that occurs on IOTA's network, the transaction needs to approve two previous transactions by conducting a small amount of Proof of Work for them. The premise is that as more transactions occur, the network will be able to scale faster since there are more verifications being performed in parallel." This system, IOTA explains, also helps to mitigate instances of double sending and allows for the network to be asynchronous. Nodes, as they put it, "do not have to achieve consensus on which valid transactions have the right to be in the ledger," but "in the case where there are conflicting transactions, the nodes need to decide which transactions will become orphaned," which is done via a selection algorithm. Other benefits of this system include the fact that the network is fully decentralized and transaction speeds increase as the user base grows. IOTA's platform allows for micro- and nano-transactions, true, but the "core feature," according to their website, is the ability to transfer data through Tangle. Devices will be able to communicate via secure connections, and that data will be "fully authenticated and tamper-proof," negating the possibility of outside attacks. In IOTA's grand vision, the current Internet Of Things will evolve to a point with more machines than people, and all of those things will have the ability to "talk" with one another. There have been some concerns, though, stemming from the incident in which IOTA's Coordinator was forced to shut down. The attack didn't generate any panic or loss of trust in IOTA's mission, but it did affect the IOTA wallet for a time. While it has since been addressed, it has led some to question how the project will fare going forward, because the IOTA team has built much of its platform from scratch. This means that the nascent systems IOTA has developed haven't seen as much use in the real world as more established ones, and the potential for unforeseen vulnerabilities may, as a result, be heightened. As the IOTA team moves forward, they may well realize and plan for this particular drawback accordingly.
The Uses of IOTA
IOTA goal, as stated in their roadmap, is a transformative one: "IOTA was initiated with a very clear and focused vision of enabling the paradigm shift of the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0 and a trustless 'On Demand Economy' through establishing a de facto standardized 'Ledger of Everything'." The machine-to-machine microtransactions and data-transfer abilities mentioned earlier are a part of that, but IOTA highlights several other use cases for their technology, including e-governance, masked messaging and an "economy of everything." Using IOTA's platform, organizations and even governments might be able to establish efficient e-voting systems for elections; devices can securely broadcast information for a wide range of uses; and "anything with a chip in it" might eventually be leased to others in real time, creating a world where idle possessions can generate value for their owners. Beyond this, though, IOTA surmises that their distributed ledger technology may have other uses waiting to be discovered and believes that talented developers will be blazing new trails previously unheard of as adoption of the IOTA platform grows.
The Future for IOTA
IOTA has laid out their plans in their roadmap, which seemingly culminates with the standardization of their Identity Of Things concept, a "vital role in securing the connected world," as they see it. Near-future enhancements to the IOTA platform, however, will include improved networking, automated snapshotting and the masked authenticated messaging system, among others. Interested prospective users should stay abreast of both the company Twitter feed and newsletter for updates on coming progress.
Sources:
1. https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/iota/ 2. https://iota.org/ 3. https://iota.org/IOTA_Whitepaper.pdf 4. https://ukcryptocurrency.com/iota/introduction-what-is-iota/ 5. https://www.dailydot.com/debug/what-is-iota/ 6. https://www.thesun.co.uk/money/5078469/iota-price-news-iot-value-gbp-usd-cryptocurrency/ 7. https://coincentral.com/what-is-iota-cryptocurrency-coin/ 8. https://medium.com/@linda.xie/a-beginners-guide-to-iota-a84424ff5536 9. https://www.androidauthority.com/what-is-iota-824641/ 10. https://medium.com/@MartinRosulek/how-iota-makes-future-for-internet-of-things-af14fd77d2a3 11. https://blog.iota.org/iota-development-roadmap-74741f37ed01 12. https://twitter.com/iotatoken 13. https://btcmanager.com/iota-coordinator-price/ |

"title": "The future of finance - Chapter 12: IOTA (IOTA)",
"body": "Self-proclaimed as the \"next generation blockchain,\" IOTA, launched in 2016, bills itself as the future of the \"Internet Of Things\" and is designed especially for this ever-increasing web of internet-connected objects. As the co-founders and the IOTA team see it, the expansion of the Internet Of Things will require \"the need for interoperability and sharing of resources\" between the various devices. They'd like to see IOTA become the backbone of this new landscape, creating a business model that turns technological resources into a service to be traded in a real-time, open market, sans fees.\n\n\n\nThe idea is one that has plenty of people excited, with outlets like the Daily Dot contemplating whether or not it might be \"the next Bitcoin.\" That interest sparked a large jump in value in the later part of 2017, and even though it's cooled heading into February of 2018, the market cap for IOTA still sits near $4,423,900,398, about 446,003 BTC, while the value is approximately $1.59, with a 24-hour volume of $55,855,200 and the entirety of its maximum supply -- 2,779,530,283 MIOTA -- in circulation.\n\n
IOTA: Competition, Pros and Cons
\nThough the hype about IOTA becoming the next Bitcoin is real, it's important to note there are some significant differences between the two platforms. For starters, IOTA doesn't generate blocks like Bitcoin, nor does it need to be mined. Instead of the tried-and-true blockchain concept of other cryptocurrencies, IOTA uses something known as Tangle, a \"revolutionary new blockless distributed ledger.\" According to the IOTA team, this system is \"scalable, lightweight, and makes it possible to transfer value without any fees.\" That description is just a cursory one, though. IOTA goes into more depth about the tangle system in their white paper, and a helpful summary comes by way of A Beginner's Guide To IOTA:\n\n\"For every transaction that occurs on IOTA's network, the transaction needs to approve two previous transactions by conducting a small amount of Proof of Work for them. The premise is that as more transactions occur, the network will be able to scale faster since there are more verifications being performed in parallel.\"\n\nThis system, IOTA explains, also helps to mitigate instances of double sending and allows for the network to be asynchronous. Nodes, as they put it, \"do not have to achieve consensus on which valid transactions have the right to be in the ledger,\" but \"in the case where there are conflicting transactions, the nodes need to decide which transactions will become orphaned,\" which is done via a selection algorithm. Other benefits of this system include the fact that the network is fully decentralized and transaction speeds increase as the user base grows.\n\nIOTA's platform allows for micro- and nano-transactions, true, but the \"core feature,\" according to their website, is the ability to transfer data through Tangle. Devices will be able to communicate via secure connections, and that data will be \"fully authenticated and tamper-proof,\" negating the possibility of outside attacks. In IOTA's grand vision, the current Internet Of Things will evolve to a point with more machines than people, and all of those things will have the ability to \"talk\" with one another. There have been some concerns, though, stemming from the incident in which IOTA's Coordinator was forced to shut down.\n\nThe attack didn't generate any panic or loss of trust in IOTA's mission, but it did affect the IOTA wallet for a time. As the IOTA team moves forward, they may well realize and plan for this particular drawback accordingly.\n\n\n\n
The Uses of IOTA
\nIOTA goal, as stated in their roadmap, is a transformative one:\n\n\"IOTA was initiated with a very clear and focused vision of enabling the paradigm shift of the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0 and a trustless 'On Demand Economy' through establishing a de facto standardized 'Ledger of Everything'.\"\n\nThe machine-to-machine microtransactions and data-transfer abilities mentioned earlier are a part of that, but IOTA highlights several other use cases for their technology, including e-governance, masked messaging and an \"economy of everything.\"\n\nUsing IOTA's platform, organizations and even governments might be able to establish efficient e-voting systems for elections; devices can securely broadcast information for a wide range of uses; and \"anything with a chip in it\" might eventually be leased to others in real time, creating a world where idle possessions can generate value for their owners.\n\nBeyond this, though, IOTA surmises that their distributed ledger technology may have other uses waiting to be discovered and believes that talented developers will be blazing new trails previously unheard of as adoption of the IOTA platform grows.\n\n
The Future for IOTA
\nIOTA has laid out their plans in their roadmap, which seemingly culminates with the standardization of their Identity Of Things concept, a \"vital role in securing the connected world,\" as they see it. Near-future enhancements to the IOTA platform, however, will include improved networking, automated snapshotting and the masked authenticated messaging system, among others. Interested prospective users should stay abreast of both the company Twitter feed and newsletter for updates on coming progress.\n\n
Sources:
\n1.\thttps://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/iota/\n2.\thttps://iota.org/\n3.\thttps://iota.org/IOTA_Whitepaper.pdf\n4.\thttps://ukcryptocurrency.com/iota/introduction-what-is-iota/\n5.\thttps://www.dailydot.com/debug/what-is-iota/\n6.\thttps://www.thesun.co.uk/money/5078469/iota-price-news-iot-value-gbp-usd-cryptocurrency/\n7.\thttps://coincentral.com/what-is-iota-cryptocurrency-coin/\n8.\thttps://medium.com/@linda.xie/a-beginners-guide-to-iota-a84424ff5536\n9.\thttps://www.androidauthority.com/what-is-iota-824641/\n10.\thttps://medium.com/@MartinRosulek/how-iota-makes-future-for-internet-of-things-af14fd77d2a3\n11.\thttps://blog.iota.org/iota-development-roadmap-74741f37ed01\n12.\thttps://twitter.com/iotatoken\n13.\thttps://btcmanager.com/iota-coordinator-price/",
