The development team behind Ethereum is working hard towards a much anticipated upgrade known as Metropolis. The hard fork is poised to relieve a lot of stress on the Ethereum ecosystem, as well as, bring a little more convenient functionality for it’s users. Metropolis will be split into 2 core releases: Byzantium & Constantinople. The Byzantium release is scheduled to implement on the 4.3 millionth block or on September 22nd. Let’s take a look at some of the planned upgrades being introduced in Byzantium.\n\n### 1. Foundations for ZK-SNARKs / Zero-Knowledge Proofs\nByzantium will include the building blocks to implement zero-knowledge proofs or ZK-SNARKs in the future. The implementation of ZK-SNARKs will allow a higher-level of anonymity for the Ethereum ecosystem. Abstraction – EIP 86\nAccount abstraction is another great feature planned for the upcoming fork. It will allow users to have more control over their private keys and the ability for contracts to pay the mining fees instead of having the sender always pay for the gas. Additionally, the account abstraction will reduce the risk of being hacked by quantum computing.\n\n### 3. Simplified Programming in Solidity\nThe Solidity programming language is undergoing an upgrade to allow novice programmers to easily work with smart contracts. New functionality and an easier hands-on approach will encourage new programmers to begin building their applications and smart contracts.\n\n### 4.       "body": "Since the early days of Bitcoin, a large number of alternative cryptocurrencies have emerged, including Ethereum, Litecoin, and Ripple. These altcoins, short for alternative coins, are based on the Bitcoin blockchain, aiming to address Bitcoin’s shortcomings. For instance, Litecoin facilitates payments approximately four times faster than Bitcoin at a fraction of the cost. While most of the digital currencies are running on Bitcoin or Ethereum blockchains, Ripple has evolved largely on its own paradigm. \n\n## What is Ripple?\nRipple is a universal real-time gross settlement (RTGS) payment protocol founded in 2012 to enable the fastest and most cost effective peer-to-peer payment system for international payments. It aims to make payments as easy and quick as sending an email. Ripple’s protocol is being increasingly adopted as settlement infrastructure technology among various Top 50 global banks, mainly due to the benefits of the distributed ledger (blockchain) technology powering it.\n\n## How Does Ripple Work?\nSuppose Tom from Canada wants to send 500 euros to his friend Angela in the France. The two banks use a correspondent bank to transfer the payment. First, Ripple’s translation layer receives a message and collects the required information to start the payment process. Next runs the pre-transaction validation to ensure the accounts meet the screening criteria. Banks already have the necessary data to verify and pre-validate the payments before the money is sent. The ILP Ledger uses the Interledger protocol to coordinate fund movements between the three institutions to settle the payment. The Canadian Bank has an account with the correspondent bank, and the German bank is connecting to the correspondent bank through a third party. Next ripple holds the funds across the three ledgers. Cryptographic signatures are created to verify that the funds are not double spent. The funds are then subsequently released to the ledgers. Finally, a confirmation message is sent to all counterparties confirming the success of the transaction.\n\nThe overall transaction from beginning to end takes only several seconds and makes Ripple a good alternative for traditional interbank fund transfer systems, ideal for international remittances. For comparison, domestic interbank transactions on the ACH network in the U.S. of the BACS network in the UK could take up to two to five days to settle. International money transfers could take even longer, given there is no unified solution that’s also offering it at a low fee; typically MoneyGram or the Western Union charge much higher fees.\n\n## Competitive Advantages\nRipple operates very differently than some of the other payment networks or cryptocurrencies. Instead of competing with financial institutions, Ripple’s technology uses them to facilitate the payments. Also, Ripple doesn’t aim to dominate other currencies but instead supports multiple digital currencies, including fiat currencies. Therefore members are not required to convert local currency into Ripples (XRP). Worth noting that Ripple protocol is designed to sit on top of the bank’s existing technology infrastructure and complies with risk, privacy, and regulatory compliance requirements. Ripple’s protocol successfully mitigates the settlement risk – the payment either goes through or fails.\n\n## Investors and Partners\nIn late 2016 Ripple Labs finalized the financing of an additional $55M in a Series B funding round to support the growth and development of ripple, making it one of the largest funded blockchain-based projects in the industry.       "body": "2017 has been a record year for Initial Coin Offerings in several aspects. Not only has ICO fundraising surpassed all the Venture Capital funding invested in Blockchain start-ups since the inception of Blockchain, ICOs have raised more than seed funding raised in 2017. So far, 92 projects have raised a combined $1.3 Bn of token sales. Tezos\nWhile all Blockchains offer financial incentives for maintaining consensus on their ledgers, no ledger has a robust on-chain mechanism that amends the protocol governance rules and rewards protocol development. Tezos addresses one of the largest and under-addressed challenges in Blockchain protocol – the governance system. Tezos is the first self-amending cryptographic ledger and has developed a self-governing platform to address the scaling shortcomings of some of the legacy cryptocurrencies. Tezos allows the members of the network to submit proposals that would maximize the benefit to the network and dynamically change the network rules. Tezos will incorporate these value add features into the primary Blockchain rather than enabling the creation of the third party distributed applications which makes the incentive mechanism much different than Ethereum.\n\n### 2. Bancor\nThe Bancor protocol is a standard that allows anyone to easily create completely liquid “smart tokens” that calculate their own prices. Moreover, Bancor enables any single party to convert any token to another, without requiring the second party to exchange with. These “smart tokens” hold one or more other tokens in reserve (any ERC20 standard token or Ether) and permit any party to instantly purchase or liquidate the smart token in exchange for any of its reserve tokens. The transaction executes directly through the smart token’s contract, at a continuously calculated price, according to a formula which balances buy and sell volumes. The premise of Bancor is to make a liquid market in the tokens by using the ICO sale proceeds to provide a price floor for the reserve tokens.\n\n### 3. Status\nEthereum has introduced an entire ecosystem of decentralized applications (DApps). Status is an open-source messaging platform and browser that interacts with DApps that run on Ethereum Network. Status is also the first use case of implementing Ethereum on mobile platforms such as iOS and Android – as such we can use DApps that are powered by Ethereum.\n\nIn spite of this year’s robust ICO activity, the ICO fundraising has slowed down, albeit the falling cryptocurrency prices in June and July. In June Blockchain companies raised over $550M in funding, compared to ~300M in July.
