| body | So, I was thinking-- I wonder if thinking will ever become illegal... Or widely discouraged... That's a dystopian thought. Disappointing it even came to mind. Anyway, I was thinking, is there any justification for anything the government-- (I like the U.S., so just know, that's my frame of reference)-- anyway, is there any justification for the presence of government to be necessary? I wouldn't consider myself an anarchocapitalist, but I would also acknowledge, as a tech worker, capitalism has treated me somewhat well (though, not this year, heh). I just wonder, will that always be the case throughout my life? And further, I feel empathy for those who aren't as well off. And I don't think that just because of some perception of a social obligation. By that I mean, I think it's unconscionable that not everyone gets to live as well as I do. And I think, the Malthusian thought that it can't be done for everyone currently living, and for those who will come after, I would humbly submit, maybe imagine a way that reason could be solved. And if that can become a business, then you can likely make it a reality for more than was the case before. Remember, quality of life is objectively better for many people around the planet, even if there might be looming challenges around the corner. The world is becoming very different than it once was. There are opportunities there to help affect change, as long as you stick to your principles, and you're smart about your approach. The desire for socialism or populism to solve these problems are absolutely understandable, I absolutely get it, but to be truly egalitarian, any solution has to be sustainable, and can't just come from foreign liberators or arrogant saviors. The solutions must be owned by those who use them. Otherwise, those solutions are often sustainable but exploitative at best, or temporary and wasteful at worst. And they must be viable enough to be capable of being protected from others who might wish to deny their presence. These solutions don't have to be conjured out of thin air; as Kropotkin stated in the Bread Book, innovations are the result of all of humanity, including all those who came before, and as such, healthy collaboration is absolutely important, and a decent way to bootstrap infrastructure is purchase inexpensive solutions developed abroad. But eventually, local industry must be allowed to take root. I also think the capability to do business with each other without needing large institutions of any kind will be critical, however. This will lower the barrier to entry to becoming a more self-sovereign individual. Turns out, kids, when you become an adult and you start making money to pay your bills and keep you out of trouble, your capability to avoid dealing with the government becomes substantially better. Yes, privilege. Check it. But also acknowledge it. If you play the long game, perhaps consider that knowledge will work better for furthering the cause. Corporations can often get away with murder (literally) for a very long time and usually get off with just a reasonable fine (for the corporation, at least) and the smart individuals rarely see the front page of the news. One reason is because corporations have the capability to fight back in many greater ways. And eventually, the goal would be to become a corporation of one, or few, doing business with others, with the protection that profit, connections, and legal representation affords you. Sustainability is key. I think that's an incredible opportunity many aren't really thinking enough about, yet they are thinking of "distributed governance" such as what is often investigated by the Ethereum DWeeb community. Just make the software, if it's practical, people will use it. No need to shill your ICO or... __cringe__ "let me tell you about my startup." Please keep your transparent paper trail blockchain out of my business. Also, does the government already sufficiently interfere in such a thing so as to make this sort of thinking impractical, or flawed in some way? All this might come across as naive or idealistic, and perhaps, but I also think of it being more practical than being angry. It's problem solving. And the problem, as I see it, is the perceived necessity for government. If there were more examples of things that would work perfectly fine for obviating the necessity for government, then anarchism becomes a much easier thing to advocate. If your business idea doesn't seem legally viable, consider hiring a lawyer, or an attorney (if you ever think you might need representation in court). No need to get angry about it, just pay for someone with more expertise than you to help you solve the problem you imagine exists. But, hey, IANAL, but also, that approach has worked pretty well for me so far. Finding experts to help you (and compensating them for their time) is never a bad idea. BTW, if there are any laywers reading this, maybe consider reaching out. Any lawyer reading Steemit has got to be alright. Regardless, if these problems of centralization and authoritarian dependence can then be done often enough, then, perhaps the government can become so unarguably unjustifiable, it becomes obvious. And when that is the case, I would imagine it becomes MUCH easier to fight, if even necessary at all. The goal is not a corporate nation-states or whatever people think AnCaps think. Honestly, I don't really know, I don't give them much of the time of day, most of them weird me out. Regardless, it's sustainable self-sovereignty that is most important. If establishing a corporation (which costs all of $50 USD where I'm from, and takes 5 minutes) is the means to that end, then so be it. **Remember, the revolution can't be fought if you're hungry.** Feel free to provide your thoughts, but it would be appreciated if long videos weren't provided to explain further. Just give me the summary of the relevant portion in your own words. Book recommendations are welcome, of course. __I'm posting this here first, but I'm thinking I'll cross-post to the Anarchist Reddit, since I'm curious what the difference in response will be between the two. "body": "So, I was thinking-- I wonder if thinking will ever become illegal... Or widely discouraged... That's a dystopian thought. Disappointing it even came to mind. Anyway, I was thinking, is there any justification for anything the government-- (I like the U.S., so just know, that's my frame of reference)-- anyway, is there any justification for the presence of government to be necessary?\n\nI wouldn't consider myself an anarchocapitalist, but I would also acknowledge, as a tech worker, capitalism has treated me somewhat well (though, not this year, heh). There are opportunities there to help affect change, as long as you stick to your principles, and you're smart about your approach.\n\nThe desire for socialism or populism to solve these problems are absolutely understandable, I absolutely get it, but to be truly egalitarian, any solution has to be sustainable, and can't just come from foreign liberators or arrogant saviors. | body | I conjecture that with modern hardware, there is no way to prevent the owner of a computer from inspecting any data that resides in the computer's RAM. This means in essence that in Arcjet, on modern hardware, you can't hide anything from the owners of the servers. It's one thing to trust a large corporation with your data. It's another thing to trust a massive decentralized network of people with your data. If an application requires confidential data to be stored and processed in cleartext on the server, then people might not trust this system to host it. There are some important applications that don't process confidential data. Example: 4chan. Most applications process at least a bit of confidential data, such as passwords. You can use Arcjet to host apps with confidential data if you can keep the confidential data from being processed in cleartext on the server side. That means you process all confidential data on the client side. It also means if you store confidential data on the server side, then you store it encrypted. I conjecture that with new hardware, you could make it possible for data on the servers to be hidden from the owner, even when in cleartext in RAM. You'd need some kind of compartmentalization mechanisms built into the hardware, in such a way that the owners of the hardware couldn't crack the compartmentalization (at least not without advanced, specialized, expensive hardware that wouldn't exist at first). |

The major reason storing bulk application data on the blockchain is too expensive is because the blockchain is immutable. If someone doesn't pay their bill, there's no way to prune their data from the network. It will always be there. I intend to implement a rolling backup strategy to help prevent and inspect tampering, but I don't intend there to be a "forever-store". Thats simply data storage that's subsidized by new users. |

I'm sure it will include blockchain as a technology. But, as @cryptoquick correctly points out, you can't use blockchain as the basis for an application deployment platform, because storing data on blockchain is too expensive. | title | Arcjet - A Decentralized Application Server Platform |
| body | I'd like to announce to the community an idea I've been developing for a while, and my intention to develop it as an open source project and as a community. I haven't begun development yet because I wanted to flesh out the idea more and I wanted to bring the idea to the community for public comment and participation. I've got a proposal live here: [https://github.com/arcjet/proposal](https://github.com/arcjet/proposal), but I'll summarize here. As an application developer that's learned to value decentralization, I've identified an opportunity for disrupting the current ecosystem of cloud providers. I think it could lead to a scalable system for deploying web applications in a way that allows application developers to pay their users for serving their own content, as well as the content of others, instead of paying top-tier cloud providers such as Amazon or Google. For application development, the blockchain is insufficient. It would cost millions to store gigabytes of information on most major blockchains. Further, it's expensive to develop on and deploy DApps. It is very useful for maintaining ledgers and cryptocurrency, but not for running applications of any sufficient degree of complexity. The largest issue I have with this idea is that there's no way to "pay your bill"-- it's paid in advance, and subsidized by subsequent owners of the cryptocurrency. You cannot remove data from major blockchains, it's stored there forever in an immutable data-structure that has a replication factor of _n_, the number of users of the network. This is entirely unsustainable and unscalable for application development. In designing the Arcjet Network, I wanted to solve these problems for the future, to provide for decentralization mechanisms, and even allow people to run local copies of the web apps they use. One reason I called it "Arcjet" have a space theme is that I want to make it feasible to run local copies of entire applications even in remote locations, such as Deep Space, the Moon, or Mars. I also want to allow people to take back their data, track it and manage it. As an experienced application developer, I come at the "Decentralized App" question from a more practical UX angle. One aspect of Blockstack I dislike is their approach to solving the identity issue. They ask for money (in BTC) to establish an identity on their network. Sure, it's a solution for Zooko's triangle and increases the difficulty / expense of Sybil attacks, but it's also a substantial roadblock to put in front of users. That said, implementing a Blockstack-like solution to identity might be more feasible on a network that pays its users to serve data. It could use a more traditional OAuth approach. However, there should be many identity providers on such a decentralized network, otherwise you're centralizing around one particular organization. In a truly decentralized system, *everything must be open and forkable.* It's the most responsible way. I'd eventually like to provide for decentralized alternatives to services, such as databases, bulk object storage, geographic maps, advertising, analytics, video streaming, image processing, logging, messaging, certificate and secrets management, and even inbound and outbound email for decentralize applications. DApps don't have solutions for most of these things, and must rely on centralized networks of some variety, which can incur additional expense and complexity and can increase the barrier to entry to developers trying to make apps. Ideally our services would be so useful, reliable, and inexpensive, even users with apps running outside the network would want to use Arcjet Network services. The economics of such a network would be very complex. Users might run the desktop application, but they don't have to. Application developers pay network fees. Applications can charge for their services and deny users service if they don't pay. Payments would be transacted in AJC, or Arcjet Coins, which will be traded on a decentralized exchange. Users get priority serving their own content, so they can earn more by participating in apps. Further, there would need to be a cap to prices so people don't just run servers on AWS. It must be dramatically competitive with top-tier cloud providers and not "feed the beast". That said, participants should be able to earn a lot of money collectively as the network grows. They won't get much from a single application developer, but if they have a lot of apps installed and they have much of their resources allocated to servers, they should be able to make enough money to make it worthwhile for paying their bandwidth bills and to grow their hardware collection. Users might start investing in NASes, SANs, and server racks, etc. To protect the network, application developers could also pay for rotating offline backups. Their backups would be held for many days, and brought online and offline at certain times in order to save power and to prevent overwriting backups during an attack. Further, users can protect the network from abuse by opting into independently-maintained blacklists, and by only installing apps they trust and use and support. Further, they can opt out of serving certain types of content, such as controversial content or pornographic content, but they will lose money by doing so. One major point of decentralization is to prevent censorship, but users should also be able to have a choice of what sort of data is stored on their systems. There's still a lot of unanswered questions, and I could definitely write a lot more. This will be a long journey, but I think it could be very rewarding and could make the internet better for everyone. I'm currently working on an social network called [Props4Crops](https://props4crops.com/), the development of which led to a lot of these ideas. Props to Will Bowditch for coming up with that world-changing idea. I want more ideas like it to flourish and thrive on decentralized networks, which is why I'm so passionate about working on this. Development on an idea like these are bigger than any one person, it should be able to be continued and vetted by an involved community, which is one reason why decentralization is so important. Suggestions, Steem, and comments also welcomed! |

| title | What Arcjet Decentralized Hosting Might Mean for Net Neutrality |
| body | In a previous article, I spoke about Arcjet, a plan to create a decentralized server platform. You can find the article here: [Arcjet - A Decentralized Application Server Platform — Steemit](https://steemit.com/apps/@cryptoquick/arcjet-a-decentralized-application-server-platform) Net Neutrality, or deregulation of the telecom industry in the U.S., could very well result in ISPs charging extra for an open internet, and throttling or blocking access to anything but the large incumbent websites, who might pay fees to ISPs in individual arrangements in order to speed up the internet for their users. If ISPs do start charging more for an "open internet", users can start paying for those higher fees by running servers from their homes. They might even make enough money to pay for a VPN, possibly one run on Arcjet itself. Further, applications or even the Arcjet network itself could make arrangements with ISPs on the behalf of users and developers to subsidize a deregulated internet. So, if we are successful, there's no need to fear! Why worry when you can develop better technology? |

If any of this interests you, please get involved: Join me on Slack here: [Arcjet Community Slack](https://join.slack.com/t/arcjetspace/shared_invite/enQtMjc3OTIyMTEwOTk3LWZmZDFkZGJiNmQxY2Q2ODJiNGJlMDEzMzY0NzJlMjQ1YzMzNTVkNjI0NTE5OTM2OGU4OTg4NGZhNGE5NjFkODg) Also, see our live proposal, and create issues here: [https://github.com/arcjet/proposal](https://github.com/arcjet/proposal) Remember, development hasn't yet started, but will very soon! Suggestions, Steem, and comments also welcomed! |

| title | Let's Refactor Some JS: Blockstack Todos Example |
| body | So, I was checking out Blockstack's [Todo list example](https://blockstack.org/tutorials/todo-list), and one code snippet stuck out to me that it could be dramatically improved in readability if rewritten with modern JS. Before: ```js fetchData () { const blockstack = this.blockstack blockstack.getFile(STORAGE_FILE) .then((todosText) => { var todos = JSON.parse(todosText || '[]') todos.forEach(function (todo, index) { todo.id = index }) this.uidCount = todos.length this.todos = todos }) }, ``` After: ```js async fetchData () { const todosText = await this.blockstack.getFile(STORAGE_FILE) const todos = JSON.parse(todosText || '[]') this.todos = todos.map((todo, id) => ({...todo, id})) this.uidCount = todos.length }, ``` As far as ESNext features go, I used async/await, object spread, fat arrow implicit return, and object property shorthand. Also, stylistically, there's no need to reassign `this.blockstack`, it's not used again, and it doesn't make the code shorter. Further, the map method is much better for this function, for many reasons. (FP technique primarily) Finally the order in which `uidCount` is assigned the length of todos doesn't matter much, nor does which todos array I use to assign that value. If anyone notices this code isn't functionally equivalent, let me know. I've had a fair amount of mead tonight. Thanks for reading! This is my first post on Steemit, just sharing my JS knowledge, and maybe tomorrow I'll open up a PR to contribute the code back to the community. That said, they were using Node 6, not Node 8, so some of these newer features might not be welcome additions to the codebase. |
