| body | I firmly believe that one of the most fundamental components of trading is a well informed, well rounded understanding of the market at large. Maybe I’m wired differently, but I’d never even consider making a trade without understanding the who, what, where, when and why of the deal. ## The Global Elite Starting with the who – these are essentially the major players in the market. While most people do evaluate the founders behind various crypto projects, fewer will go and look toward the people who hold massive amounts of leverage over the market as a whole. A who’s who survey of the markets should be prefaced on the notion of influence. Certain people have the ability to influence the public, no doubt (John McAfee comes to mind), but certain others have the ability to impact regulatory efforts and the proverbial ‘whale’ crowd. These include outspoken magnates, such as Jamie Dimon, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Warren Buffet, Peter Thiel, Julian Assange and so on, but also include key figures at the IRS, the SEC and each nations’ equivalents. A word to the wise – with upwards of 80% (estimated) of the bitcoin trading happening within Asia, the modern crypto investor would be well informed to pay special and careful attention the decision makers in that part of the world. Cryptoassets at large are supranational, so it only stands to reason that you should seek to understand the global powers that be in relation to what you’re trading. Some will be positive, others will be largely ignorant, but you will certainly come across a select few that are downright antagonistic. I’ve often observed that the louder and the more polarizing these figures are the more impact they are able to have. **If it bleeds it leads** – and nothing cuts through the noise like a well timed remark. ## Fiat Onramps and KYC When trying to understand the various forces that can act on a market, you’ll inevitably end up looking regulations. Fiat onramps are one of the fundamental components of the crypto market. No, they’re not for allowing small Italian cars access to the highway, they’re ways for people to exchange regular fiat currencies for digital crypto assets. The one that you’re probably most familiar with is Coinbase. Many alt coins have achieved legendary pump status on the backs of a rumored Coinbase addition (that never seems to come through I might add), but there’s another way these fiat onramps can have significant impact on markets. The vast majority of regulatory efforts that have taken hold thus far are related to taxation, privacy and ‘Know Your Consumer’ laws. KYC is a major development that requires these exchanges to collect and maintain records that verify the identify of their clients. While not all fiat onramps have enacted these laws, the vast majority have. Several countries have similar regulations around money laundering and counter-terrorism (at least thats what it says on the tin). KYC itself has a very interesting relationship with influence. We’ve seen that when new trading pairs that include fiat are added to crypto assets, their overall sentiment goes up. The relationship with traditional financial institutions and regulatory bodies that are required for this process can serve as a quasi-approval stamp for a coin. We saw this with bitcoin, ethereum and litecoin and I’d wager we’ll see it again with others. At the risk of getting on my soapbox, I’ll just say that the fiat onramps that these regulations aim to track are only one way that individuals enter the market. Another very important, fundamental way coins are distributed is through mining, or what Satoshi originally called ‘coinbase’ transactions. Suffice to say that miners have access to newly allocated, unspent coins that require no such filings to access. So, back on track. We’ve got fiat onramps, heavy handed influencers, and we’ve got regulations. How do they impact a market? ## Market Impact It’s important to remember that Mr. Market reacts emotionally, not logically. The very mention of proposed regulations in Asia has the ability to shutter new signups at exchanges based there, kick off large sell offs and put a serious pall over your weekend. Conversely, if the SEC came out and stamped some approvals on traditional financial instruments structured around cryptocurrencies, that could be seen as a massive vote of confidence. Markets would likely react positively. We’ve seen this all before. The forex markets are the same way (and many new investors are cautioned to steer clear of known news events). Buy the rumor, sell the news, as the old adage says. ## Deep Sea Fishing The point of these essays, or scribblings, or whatever they are is to inform and foster an expanded worldview of the crypto asset ocean, one that I think will better prepare you for making intelligent, thoughtful decisions. Trading is a game of asymmetrical information. Why operate at more of a disadvantage than you have to? It only makes sense to me that we begin by grabbing a fish finder and looking at the larger fish swimming within. Carefully observe the structures that the fish surround. Feel the currents that all of the fish must succumb to. Peer into the depths and take note of the whales lurking in silence. They can be found shuttling money in and out of fiat onramps, and they seem to be the first to feel the change in currents. In some cases, they create them. You can track their activity by looking at large (in value) transactions on the exchanges. I have more than once noticed that if you see a pattern start to emerge that favors one side of the order book, you’d be wise to take note. Especially if the scent of regulatory efforts can be found on the wind. Your profitability may depend on it. Thanks for reading! I've got a blog that I post these essays on over at http://cryptothoughts.com |

Conversely, if the SEC came out and stamped some approvals on traditional financial instruments structured around cryptocurrencies, that could be seen as a massive vote of confidence. Markets would likely react positively.\n\nWe’ve seen this all before. The forex markets are the same way (and many new investors are cautioned to steer clear of known news events). Buy the rumor, sell the news, as the old adage says.\n\n## Deep Sea Fishing\nThe point of these essays, or scribblings, or whatever they are is to inform and foster an expanded worldview of the crypto asset ocean, one that I think will better prepare you for making intelligent, thoughtful decisions. Trading is a game of asymmetrical information. Why operate at more of a disadvantage than you have to? It only makes sense to me that we begin by grabbing a fish finder and looking at the larger fish swimming within.\n\nCarefully observe the structures that the fish surround. Your profitability may depend on it.\n\nThanks for reading! I've got a blog that I post these essays on over at http://cryptothoughts.com",

| body | Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Are you checking your phone every 15 minutes for the latest ticker prices? Are you struggling to feel confident in your trades? You’re not alone. While that feeling of confidence will never go away entirely (we all make bad trades), you could really enhance your sleep quality by operating from a strategy that is firmly rooted in a set of strongly held principles. I’ve got a close friend that scours the internet communities (reddit, facebook, twitter) for trading opportunities. He’s always in a rush to find the next big trading opportunity (NBTO™). The problem is, by the time he finds it, he also uncovers a huge amount of traders who got in much earlier than he’s able to. The price has already tripled. He’s stuck figuring out if the crypto is already on the moon or still locked in hyper sleep en route. He digs deeper. “There’s still time!”, “Why [insert crypto] will go to $[arbitrary number here] within the next month” – the sentiment is strong. If he doesn’t get in now, he’s going to miss those 100x gains he’s after. He finally decides to pull the trigger and take a position. The FOMO won out after all. Only problem is the trade didn’t pan out. He spends the next few days constantly checking his phone and watching the numbers drop by the hour. He can’t peel his eyes away long enough to evaluate why the trade wasn’t a good one in the first place. A worse problem is when the trade does work out. It’s a self perpetuating cycle. If he’s getting good results doing it this way, why should he listen to me? I try to reason with him. I’m not offering trading opportunities, I’m offering peace of mind. I’m offering a different way to look at things and a different set of heuristics to evaluate the market. What I’m really offering is a way to conserve his phone battery. I firmly believe that a trading modality that centers around other peoples insight (OPI) is a recipe for disaster. It can be likened to chess. If all you know are tactics, what happens when you run out? Or what happens when those situations don’t present themselves? You have nothing to fall back on. I view a solid, fundamental trading method as including these 3 pieces. They are integral to longterm, sustained success: If you view these 3 as a pyramid, you’ve got the tactics at the tip. These are short term tricks with a short tail. A short window of opportunity for the right decision. They’ve also got a very short base of information to work off of. Strategies are next. Strategies inform tactics. Tactics are used at certain key points in a strategy. A strategy encompasses the actual criteria for a particular trade. If the tactic executes the trade, the strategy identifies the opportunity. Strategies are nothing but a codified shot in the dark if they don’t have a solid set of principles to underscore their beliefs. A well defined strategy is one that comes from a collection of underlying assumptions about how a market, or its individual parts will behave generally over a given time period (likely the projected timeframe for the trade). You do have a timeframe in mind, don’t you? Said another way, tactics are the words we speak, strategies are the thoughts we have and principles are the moral / thought frameworks that we operate from. There’s always going to be an asymmetry of information – but it’s a good target to remove it from your individual trades as much as possible. If your tactical trades are not tied to any higher level information or thesis then they’re by large worthless. You can’t repeat them. You can’t evaluate them. You can’t learn from them. Much will be written here on developing each part, but for now, suffice to say that the best way to define each is to start from the bottom and work your way up. Begin by understanding the market and how it moves. A market is a living, breathing thing. Understand the way it thinks. Understand the way the collective traders think. Then draw observations. Things that you see again and again. What do you understand about this amorphous creature? Those are your assumptions – your strategies. Finally, look for the holes in the scaly underbelly. Where could you slip a well timed sword in and slay the beast? The best tactics are those that the market doesn’t expect. Those that other traders aren’t already calling attention to. The best tactics allow your strategy to operate in a completely different manner than the rest. Develop asymmetry of information in favor of yourself. |
