| body | Yesterday we met with the social worker from the foster care agency for the first time. She told us there would be four visits, the second one will be in mid-January. I was rather apprehensive. Although my husband had submitted his fingerprints for the background check, signed where I had asked him to sign, and all that - he had also said several conflicting things which had left me worried and scared that he would tell the social worker, "This is all a big mistake and I'm NOT willing to be a foster parent." She shifted through paper after paper, explained the process, and then asked, "Why are you interested in being foster parents?" I went first, describing my experiences as a mother, beginning with my first child at 18, and my second child at age 36, our miscarriage a few years later, and my current state of menopause now. I told her about how much I loved watching a child learn and grow, that I was fascinated by how their minds worked, their milestones, their individuality. I talked about feeding children's interests - art in my eldest, science in my youngest, and concluded it all by saying, "I realized that I'm not ready to be done yet. I've learned so much, and I feel I can give so much to another child." And then she turned to my husband and my heart thudded in my chest. Would he torpedo my dreams? Would he tell her this was all my idea and that he wanted nothing to do with it? And what came out of his mouth was truth, and deep honesty. He told her that he had never wanted to be a dad. That he had been too afraid that he would be like his dad, a man who sucked as a father, but turned out to be a great grandpa. "And then Emily came along and she is amazing and sweet and EASY," he said, "and I also realized I was actually good at it and I know I could be good at it again." He talked about fearing change, how my endless furniture rearranging drove him nuts, but that "life is change, and we have to learn to change with it." And I wanted to cry and hug him and tell him thank you. But I sat there, quiet, and bided my time. I had no idea those were the fears running through his head. Sometimes, when we speak our truths, the things we fear fall away from us and we get to be who we are without them weighing us down. | body | I'll admit, having an 11-year-old is a lot of fun. The hormones haven't kicked in fully yet, and her brain has surpassed the black and white simplicity of early childhood. I like the discussions we have. Recently, this morning actually, the issue of her cello practice came up again. It began with a note on my computer... Her juries (testing for advancement in her cello class) are this week and today is the last one. She wanted to be woken up early so she could practice. And considering she has done little or no practice all semester, it was sorely needed. I did as she asked, and after we read a chapter in a book (I read to her each weekday morning) she began to practice. It sounded *terrible*! I got out a piece of notepaper and took some notes so that I didn't forget any of them. After she had wound her way through the piece she was struggling on, I asked her... "How many pieces do you typically practice at school?" "About two to four, plus two sets of scales." I nodded, "Okay. Do you like going to Harmony Project, Emily?" This is the free music program here in our neighborhood. She even gets the cello loaned to her at zero cost to us. (sometimes living in the 'hood has its advantages!) "Yes, but I think I want to change from the cello to something else." I asked her why and she gave me one b.s. excuse and one reasonable one. "Are you satisfied with your performance when playing the cello?" And she was amazingly honest, "Sometimes I think I do very well, but other times not so much. On some of the harder parts, I fake it, but that's only because my friends know the pieces better, one on one at the juries, they can tell I'm not doing well." At this point, tears began to gather in her eyes. "And why do you think that is?" I asked her. "I'm not practicing like I should." "Do you think if you practiced more that you would get better?" "Yes!" "Well, I agree. I think that is an accurate assessment and an honest one. And so let's talk a moment about *when* you could practice. Because I see two potential time frames that would work - either getting up at 6:30 instead of seven, or right after you get home from school. And because my days vary, afternoons might be kind of iffy." She nodded, "I think doing it in the morning makes sense." We created a plan to have her wake up at 6:30 each school day morning and practice, Monday through Friday. She agreed that, if school was in session, she should be practicing, and I promised her that I would send an email to Carmen (the director of Harmony Project) telling her of our plans. She sighed with relief. "And one last thing, Em, I think that if you were to walk away from the cello now, in the situation it now stands in, it would feel like failure. I don't want you to feel like a failure. Let's fix this problem, get you back up to speed, and if in the fall you want to change to a different instrument, I feel that would be a good time to change." She nodded, hugged me, and thanked me. What I particularly liked about the entire discussion was that I wasn't guilting her, admonishing her in any way, and that *she* was the one stating the problem and solution. I simply served to frame the solution into something workable for both of us. Parenting can be so frustrating at times, and so rewarding in others. | body | Life is quite the balancing act these days. I run a cleaning biz - and that nets me close to $2,000 a month. I do all the cleanings myself, I just haven't had luck hiring it out. I make a terrible manager, I'm far too nice and workers have taken advantage of me left and right. I also take care of my elderly father. He has dementia and requires round the clock care - meals cooked, medications dispensed, and so he lives with us and pays rent and Medicaid actually pays me to care for him. So I make another $1500 a month that way. And I recently dedicated myself to making my writing pay. Considering I wrote and published my first book nearly ten years ago, I really need to get my act together. And as I was cleaning a client's house today I thought about how it had been a while since I had checked in with all of my clients - am I doing a good job cleaning their house? Am I missing any areas? Because in the midst of all of these spinning plates, like it or not, the cleaning biz brings in a huge chunk of my income. So I mentally added "create a survey to gauge client satisfaction" to my "to do's" for today. I might want to spend the day writing, but it makes sense for me to take a few minutes and craft this client satisfaction survey. I will probably make it anonymous, but I need to see how I can do the best job possible and keep my clients happy. I look forward to the day when my writing is my only source of income, and a good one at that. Until then...spinning plates. | body | Before I discovered Zentangle in 2013, I would never have considered myself an artist. I tell people all the time, "Stick figures were challenging for me. For that matter, they still are!" And if you have never heard the term "Zentangle" then I will explain it. Basically, Zentangle is basically doodling. You are creating a repeating pattern in a random space. I draw on everything. Paper, tiles, gourds, clothing, even my van. Eventually, I'll get around to showing you all kinds of projects. I haven't been able to spend as much time as I would like lately on my art. I've been busy writing and marketing. But eventually, I will find a way to incorporate that into my daily life again as well. What do you think of the shirt? | body | If you missed Part 1, you can read it [here](https://steemit.com/marketing/@cshuck1970/want-to-appear-on-the-radio-here-s-how-part-1-of-5). If you missed Part 2, you can read it [here](https://steemit.com/marketing/@cshuck1970/want-to-appear-on-the-radio-here-s-how-part-2-of-5) Now if you have already read the first two parts, you now have some ideas for how to get the attention of a radio show host and qualify through a "prequel" (the interview before the interview). If you have lost your cool and screamed "vagina" or worse during the "prequel", well, you are out of the running, my friend. Unless the show is about vaginas, you probably will do better to go to a different radio station! Part 3 is all about marketing. But don't worry, it doesn't have to be a dirty word. Before you walk into that studio to appear on the air and tell everyone about your book, your fancy pantsy new nail clipper you designed, or the future of cryptocurrency for the layman - market yourself. Steemit has more than just Americans on here, but a quick explanation is in order. Americans are weird, messed up creatures. We still suffer from an unrelenting amount of guilt over sexuality, and are constantly told that self-promotion is only for those gauche, uninformed creatures who don't know how to simply shine brightly in the night sky without the need to say (even if it is done with dignity and politeness) "look at me!" without it being simply unacceptable in our society. But here is the deal. If you are going to be on the radio? Tell EVERYONE. Tell the clerk in the store. Tell your buddies on Facebook. Tell the reader of your blog, your family members (ALL of them), your friends, the janitor from your high school who you haven't seen in 20 years, and strangers on the street. Because, damn Skippy, you have accomplished something and folks NEED to tune in. Coming up tomorrow? Part 4 - Your Moment in the Sun Bet you wondered when I would ever get around to that, huh? Stay tuned... Christine Shuck is a writer, artist, and general malcontent living in Kansas City, Missouri. "body": "\n\nIf you missed Part 1, you can read it [here](https://steemit.com/marketing/@cshuck1970/want-to-appear-on-the-radio-here-s-how-part-1-of-5).\n\nIf you missed Part 2, you can read it [here](https://steemit.com/marketing/@cshuck1970/want-to-appear-on-the-radio-here-s-how-part-2-of-5)\n\nNow if you have already read the first two parts, you now have some ideas for how to get the attention of a radio show host and qualify through a \"prequel\" (the interview before the interview).\n\nIf you have lost your cool and screamed \"vagina\" or worse during the \"prequel\", well, you are out of the running, my friend. Unless the show is about vaginas, you probably will do better to go to a different radio station!\n\nPart 3 is all about marketing. But don't worry, it doesn't have to be a dirty word.\n\nBefore you walk into that studio to appear on the air and tell everyone about your book, your fancy pantsy new nail clipper you designed, or the future of cryptocurrency for the layman - market yourself.\n\nSteemit has more than just Americans on here, but a quick explanation is in order. Americans are weird, messed up creatures. We still suffer from an unrelenting amount of guilt over sexuality, and are constantly told that self-promotion is only for those gauche, uninformed creatures who don't know how to simply shine brightly in the night sky without the need to say (even if it is done with dignity and politeness) \"look at me!\" without it being simply unacceptable in our society.\n\nBut here is the deal. If you are going to be on the radio? Tell EVERYONE.\n\nTell the clerk in the store. Tell your buddies on Facebook. Tell the reader of your blog, your family members (ALL of them), your friends, the janitor from your high school who you haven't seen in 20 years, and strangers on the street.\n\nBecause, damn Skippy, you have accomplished something and folks NEED to tune in.\n\nComing up tomorrow? Part 4 - Your Moment in the Sun\n\nBet you wondered when I would ever get around to that, huh?\n\nStay tuned...\n\n\nChristine Shuck is a writer, artist, and general malcontent living in Kansas City, Missouri. | body | I'm a big fan of goals. I have big ones, I have little ones - short-term goals, long-term goals - what can I say, I'm a planner by nature! Recently, as in since early November, I have been on a marketing tear. I have been writing in blogs since 2004, writing books since 2008, and generally writing (more or less) for most of my life. And when I start with the marketing, especially if I start first thing in the morning, it absolutely KILLS my creativity. So does... -dealing with finances -checking email -reading the news -getting on Facebook And a dozen other things. And I spent most of this past weekend at the computer screen, but creating NOTHING, just marketing, coming up with stories to write in the future, and gnashing my teeth over not being sure WHAT to write. So when I woke up this morning at 3:30 a.m. and could NOT go back to sleep (thank you menopause induced insomnia!) I thought, "I'm going to go and sit down at the computer and write at least 1,000 words before doing anything else." And you know what? I did just that. Heck, I started out with 601 words in the current chapter I was writing and ended up with 2,582 before I wrapped it up. So that's nearly TWICE my goal! I like setting goals. It feels good to accomplish them and I feel empowered to make more, even bigger ones as a result. By my computer, I have a list of financial goals. Here is what they say: 1. Pay all bills at least 10 days before they are due. 2. Have $2,000 in cash available at all times (right now I have $70, I have a ways to go!) 3. Increase emergency savings to a full $5,000 and keep it at that level. 4. Now pay all bills at least 15 days before they are due. 5. Increase saving swith CIT bank to a minimum of $10,000 (right now I have $700) 6. Increase savings to keep us in the black for a full six months of basic spending. 7. Eliminate all debts that assess interest (even a mortgage!) For now, with my writing, I hope to continue with this 1,000 words per day before anything else and see how long I can do it. I've got plenty of books that need writing after all! Christine Shuck is a writer, artist, and general malcontent living in Kansas City, Missouri.
